Sprint may have dug itself a $65 million hole with LightSquared partnership

Apple upgrades iBookstore with screenshots, promo codes
Apple has issued a letter to iBookstore publishers, informing them of several small but significant upgrades to the storefront. The first is support for screenshots, which Apple recommends using for "Fixed Layout, Read Aloud, and Multi-Touch books." The change was likely made with Apple's interactive textbook initiative in mind.

NVIDIA reports Q4 2012 earnings: annual revenue up 12.8 percent, net income doubles
If you thought we were done with the numbers game, think again. NVIDIA has just pushed out its figures for Q4 of FY 2012 and things are looking good. Revenue for the quarter was $953 million, a 10.6 percent decline over Q3, but if you look over the entire year revenue increased 12.8 percent over fiscal 2011. Net income, too, was down compared to Q3, but looking annually, when compared to 2011 income more than doubled, from 253 million to 581. Apple updates OS X drivers for eight printer makers
In an unusual move, Apple has simultaneously released OS X driver updates for eight different brands. These include Canon, Samsung, Gestetner, Ricoh, Infotec, Lanier, InfoPrint, and NRG. Filesizes range from just under 17MB for the InfoPrint drivers to almost 330MB for Canon.

SanDisk stellt zwei neue SSDs vor
SanDisk hat zwei neue Solid State Drives vorgestellt. Das alltäglichere Produkt ist dabei die SanDisk Extreme SSD, handelt es sich dabei doch schlicht um eine weitere SandForce-SSD, in der aber ONFI-MLC-NAND von SanDisk zum Einsatz kommt. FCC hopes to speed up 800MHz cellular licenses
The FCC put forward a proposal for rule changes on Wednesday that could significantly speed up better coverage for CDMA carriers in the US. It would use the same strategy that was used for the 700MHz and 1,700MHz (AWS) auctions, where licenses would be handed out based on auctions for regions. The earlier approach relied on analog signal propagation at cell sites and was now more of a hindrance than a help in areas where coverage had long since been filled out, the agency said.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0N starts shipping in Germany
Just like the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, the 7.0N addresses the legal "issues" surrounding Samsung's slates. The tiny tablet was unveiled last month and now it's starting to hit shelves in Germany with its lawsuit-circumventing redesign in place. It's a little later than anticipated, but our friends in Deutschland can now pick up the tweaked Tabs starting at €499 for a 16GB WiFi version, while an HSPA+ model will set TouchWiz fans back €569.

Twenty-six percent of European doctors use an iPad professionally
European readers who visit with their doctors have a good chance of seeing an iPad in use during their appointments. According to a new survey of physicians, 26 percent of 1,207 practicing physicians in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK said that they own an iPad and spend 27 percent of their work online time using the iPad. Manhattan Research carried out the Taking the Pulse Europe study in the fourth quarter of 2011, and found that 40 percent of doctors surveyed plan to purchase an iPad within the next six months. iOS Apps lesen ungefragt Adressbuch aus, Apple verspricht iOS-Update

Eine Reihe von iOS Apps bedienen sich ungefragt an den Adressen aus dem Adressbuch und schicken sie auf ihre eigenen Server. Das hatte diese Woche Arun Thampi zuerst bei der App Path entdeckt und publik gemacht. Gleiches gilt zum Beispiel für Hipster und das populäre Foursquare, das allerdings inzwischen upgedatet wurde, wie The Verge herausfand. Price slash kicks PlayBook up to 15% of Canadian tablets
RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook may have seen the same effect on tablet share in Canada as its close cousin the Kindle Fire did in the US, Solutions Research Group said Wednesday. Having had as little as five percent in the fall, it's now estimated to be up to 15 percent of tablets in its home country through the price cut to $200. The shift would have dropped the iPad's share from 86 percent to 68 percent, the Globe and Mail was told.

Analysts choose to exclude Apple from S&P 500 forecasts
Some financial analysts are having to omit Apple from results to properly track the Standard & Poor 500 stock index, notes the Wall Street Journal. Apple shares are currently worth over $500 each, making the company biggest in the US in terms of market cap, valued at over $475 billion. As a consequence, though, analysts with firms like UBS AG, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Barclays Capital, and Wells Fargo have decided that Apple is distorting views of the US economy.

After years of buying hard drives and moving files around, digital hoarders like myself eventually wind up with duplicate files all over the place. Apple pulls iPad from Amazon China
The iPad has apparently been pulled from sale on the Chinese version of Amazon, but apparently the reason wasn't because of some Amazon competition overseas, or even that recent lawsuit against Apple trying to stop the iPad from selling in that country. Nope -- apparently, it was Apple. Amazon's China management says Apple was the company that requested the iPad be taken down from online sales in China. Apple: Apps to require permission to fetch address book info
iOS apps will soon be required to ask permission before they can access a user's contact data, says Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. "Apps that collect or transmit a userís contact data without their prior permission are in violation of our guidelines," he tells AllThingsD. "We're working to make this even better for our customers, and as we have done with location services, any app wishing to access contact data will require explicit user approval in a future software release."

Judge to Barnes & Noble: Microsoft just "hard bargaining"
Late last month, an International Trade Commission (ITC) Administrative Law Judge threw out Barnes & Noble's key claims in its patent dispute with Microsoft that the software company was abusing patents it held on elements of the Android OS in order to push it out of the market. Apple: Adressbuch-Zugriff nur noch mit ausdrücklicher Zustimmung des Nutzers
Wie John Paczkowski von AllThingsD vom Apple-Sprecher Tom Neumayr erfahren hat, wird das Unternehmen in einer zukünftigen iOS-Version den Zugriff durch Apps auf das Adressbuch der Benutzer strenger kontrollieren.

Proview halts iPad sales in second Chinese city, says nationwide iPad ban would be "difficult"
The recent Chinese court ruling that Proview owns a trademark on the word iPad may prove to be a problem for Apple. Recently, officials in the Chinese province of Shijiazhuang began seizing iPads at one reseller. Now, these seizures are happening in a second province. According to the New York Times, the iPad is under temporary impoundment in the city of Xuzhou, located in Jiangsu province. iPhone address book issue prompts response Apple, access to contact data will require user permission
A week ago today, developer Arun Thampi detailed on his blog how the Path app for iOS accessed users' contact information and uploaded that data to Path's servers -- all without any explicit permission granted on the user's part. News: Apple seeks approval to sue bankrupt Kodak
Apple has asked a bankruptcy judge for permission to sue Kodak for patent infringement. Cisco appeals Microsoft-Skype deal in EU, wants guarantees
Cisco has posted a formal appeal of the EU approval for Microsoft's acquisition of Skype. The networking giant accepted the merger on a basic level, but it wanted the European Commission to have imposed interoperability requirements. A short while ago, I wrote about David Stanfill (of Napkin Studio) and his work on creating an AirPlay Mirroring receiver for OS X. Work continues on that project. At the same time, he's also building a tool that creates live mirroring from your Mac display to Apple TV. Called AirParrot, the new app allows you to select a Mac display and an AirPlay destination (typically an Apple TV). FLA head describes Foxconn plants as 'way above average'
The president of the Fair Labor Association, Auret van Heerden, is already suggesting that conditions at Foxconn facilities are better than those in many other factories in the country, according to Reuters. The FLA is just beginning a study of Apple's top eight suppliers in China, of which Foxconn is the company's main manufacturing partner. After his initial visits to Foxconn, van Heerden is claiming that "The facilities are first-class; the physical conditions are way, way above average of the norm."

Apple to pursue legal action against bankrupt Kodak
Bankrupt Kodak has been upfront about its strategy to generate revenue from its robust patent portfolio through litigation. In the past year, Kodak has sued Apple, HTC, RIM, Samsung, and Fujifilm using various imaging recording and processing patents. Apple isn't taking this lying down and, as Bloomberg reported, Apple has asked a bankruptcy judge to allow it to sue Kodak over a patent infringement claim. Apple contends Kodak is infringing on patents that cover technology used in printers, digital cameras and digital picture frames. Adobe pushes 'critical' patch to Shockwave for PC, Mac users
Adobe has identified nine "critical" vulnerabilities in Shockwave Player 11.6.3.633 and earlier versions for the Mac and Windows platforms that could allow attackers to run malicious code on the affected systems. Comcast slows the flood of video customer losses in Q4 2011
It's not often that a company announced it lost 17,000 customers in a quarter and that's considered good news, but for Comcast that's exactly the case when it comes to cable TV. Apple filed with the New York state court handling Kodak's bankruptcy to ask for permission to sue the camera maker over patents. Elektronischer Goldfisch ist leider kein Fischbot, zappelt nur an der Leine

Vor Urzeiten gab es in Japan mal eine Serie Roboterfische fürs heimische Aquarium, die es uns richtig angetan hatte, weshalb es heute noch schmerzt, dass wir nie einen abbekommen haben, weshalb wiederum der "elektronische Goldfisch" von ThinkGeek sofort unsere ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit hatte. Leider handelt es sich dabei aber nicht um einen Fischbot, sondern nur um einen Plastikfisch, der von 3 AA-Batterien angetrieben ohne Unterlass an einer Leine zappelt. Für Menschen, die schon immer einen Goldfisch haben wollten, aber die Fütterverantwortung konsequent scheuen, vielleicht trotzdem ganz nett: für 20 Dollar plus exorbitante Versandkosten seid ihr dabei.

Apple is reportedly cutting the minimum cost of its iAd service again. According to Ad Age, the threshold for advertisers to acquire the iAd service has dropped from US$500,000 to just $100,000. 9to5mac haben herausgefunden, dass Siri auch Japanisch spricht, wenn man sie nur fragt. Garter: Apple No 1 vendor in Q4, but faces likely slowdown
Research analytics firm Gartner has released its Q4 report, which shows that Apple took a 24 percent share of the global smartphone market -- the largest share of any single smartphone maker. Proview: Chinese customs 'unlikely' to ban iPad
Proview Technology has said that Chinese customs authorities have told them a ban on the import and export of Appleís iPad would be difficult to enforce, according to Reuters. The Hong-Kong based company is currently locked in a dispute with Apple over its use of the iPad name, which Apple believes it legitimately purchased from the company and trademarked in China and nine other countries. In a sign that softening mobile ad budgets and strong competition from Google and other ad agencies has hurt its high-end intentions, Apple's iAd program has cut the minimum amount it charges advertisers to run a campaign on iAd from its original price of $1 million to just $100,000, and is increasing the percentage of ad revenues developers will receive to 70 percent from the previous 60 percent. The company is also making other competitive adjustments.

Sony apologizes for 'mistake' in Houston price hikes
Sony has now issued a formal apology following backlash from fans of Whitney Houston who discovered that the company had raised prices on the UK iTunes Store for compilations of her work just hours after her death. Sony raised prices on Sunday for Houston's The Ultimate Collection, an older compilation from $7.83 (US equivalent) to $12.54, and the price of Whitney: The Greatest Hits from $12.54 to $15.67.

Large Hadron Collider to increase beam energy: Higgs boson can run, not hide
We've seen the Large Hadron Collider running at a record-breaking 7 TeV for short periods, but now CERN is turning it up a notch (to 4 TeV from 3.5) for the rest of the year. Siri reveals Japanese language support itself
Apple through indirect means confirmed a longstanding expectation of Japanese language support in Siri. Siri's upcoming Japanese language abilities leaked - by Siri
We learned not too long ago that Siri is on schedule to speak a few more languages soon, specifically Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and Japanese. Siri herself (itself?) has confirmed that at minimum Japanese support is coming soon, according to 9to5 Mac. I personally verified that asking Siri "What languages do you speak?" returns Japanese as a result, along with the English, French, and German that Siri supported at launch in October 2011. Despite what Siri says, however, Japanese is not yet showing up as an option in Siri's languages settings. Full support for Japanese and any additional languages will likely require an iOS update.

LibreOffice updates to version 3.5, brings grammar check, bigger Calc workbooks, and more

Cook: iCloud has 100 million users, 3 million Apple TVs sold last year

Verizon takes page from Apple for next-gen retail stores
Verizon took a very strong cue from Apple on Tuesday after a demonstration of a next-generation store concept. The 3,100 square foot "Evolution 2.0" store illustrated to PocketNow in Toms River, New Jersey moves away from the traditional carrier store's emphasis on wall displays and frequently dummy-only units by having brightly-lit central tables with working demo devices. At least the demo shop will make a point of fully staffing the store with 21 full-time workers, cutting the time in the store from as much as an hour to just minutes.

Drive maker LaCie, having debuted its first Thunderbolt-oriented hard drive with a version of the Little Big Disk, is now expanding the line with the immediate availability of the 2big Thunderbolt series, a dual-drive enclosure that is available in 4-, and 6-terabyte capacities that can be formatted for RAID 0 or 1, or just used as two separate drives in a single housing. Wall coverings appear at forthcoming Amsterdam Apple Store
Apple is prepping a new retail store in Amsterdam, and MacRumors has collected pictures of the orange and white window coverings that have shown up at the location. SanDisk kicks out Extreme SSD for home, X100 SSD for OEMs
SanDisk in a late Tuesday refresh tackled the very high end of solid-state drives still accessible to the public. The Extreme SSD is meant as much for gamers as for pro users and matches the performance of other fast drives with peak read speeds of 550MB per second and peak writes at 520MB per second.
