Xbox co-creator brings together Atari 'dream team' for mobile gaming startup
A new mobile gaming startup that's yet to release a single game isn't the sort of thing we'd normally cover 'round here, but the story behind Los Angeles-based Innovative Leisure is anything but ordinary. The man behind the company is the co-creator of the Xbox, Seamus Blackley, and he's brought with him eleven industry veterans that he calls "the dream team from Atari," including the likes of Van Burnham, Ed Logg, Rich Adam, Tim Skelly, Owen Rubin, and Ed Rotberg. While those names may not be familiar to everyone, you'll surely recognize some of the games they were responsible for: Asteroids, Centipede, Gauntlet, Missile Command, Battlezone, S.T.U.N. Runner

Verizon's ZTE Jetpack flies through FCC, arrival time still unknown
Do you wish you had your own personal Jetpack? Well, you may not have to wait much longer for ZTE's version -- the EuFi I890, announced at CES last month -- to come out, if its entry into the records of the FCC are any indication. It may not be the kind that you strap onto your back, but at least this one takes advantage of Verizon's LTE, and it happens to add in CDMA / EVDO and AT&T-compatible 3G radios. We knew the 4G-packing MiFi was going to hit stores in "the coming weeks," so this is essentially just one step closer to achieving that goal

Canalys: iPhone, Android ruled 2011, Nokia now leads Windows
A Canalys wrap-up of 2011 smartphone share painted an overall picture that kept Apple and Google in front, but also provided clearer pictures of Windows Phone. Android was just short of an absolute majority at 48.8 percent, while the iPhone held 19.1 percent. Nokia's Symbian and RIM's BlackBerry still held on to the double digits at 16.4 percent and 10.5 percent each.

Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron, dies in plane crash at 51
Sad news to report this Friday. Steve Appleton, the CEO and Chairman of Micron, died this morning in an airplane crash shortly after takeoff from the Boise, Idaho airport. He was the only one aboard, and was piloting a fixed wing, single engine kit aircraft. Appleton started working at Micron in 1983 shortly after graduating from Boise State University, first working the production line and eventually rising through the ranks to become the company's COO in 1991. He took the reins of Micron in 1994. The plane crash wasn't Appleton's first. In 2004, he and a flying partner walked away from an accident, having sustained only scrapes and bruises. iBooks Author update clarifies EULA terms on sales
Apple has pushed out an update to iBooks Author, the company's recently-launched publishing tool. The sole change in v1.0.1 is a new end-user agreement, clarifying a controversial portion of the document which initially suggested that any material produced with the software could only be sold through the iBookstore if it was sold at all. Apple sends takedown notice about customer support email
If you've ever corresponded with Apple Support (or any major customer support outlet, really), you might have seen that little notice at the bottom of the email that says any conversation included "may be privileged and may contain confidential information." Most of the time, that's just a weak move to try and cover up any issues that customer support may cause. But in Apple's case, they sometimes try to take it seriously. Airport Utility 6.0 flies right into the iCloud, leaves old AirPorts behind
The latest version of Apple's Airport Utility software has arrived, alongside those iCloud-supporting firmware updates for the company's network hardware, including the AirPort Extreme, the AirPort Express and Time Capsule. Unfortunately, Airport Utility 6.0 doesn't support pre-2007 models, that is; 802.11g-only devices. Study says iOS apps crash more than Android, not whole story
Crittercism has conducted a rare study of app stability that implied iOS apps might crash more than Android versions, although raising questions. Covering the top three quarters of popular apps downloaded in the first half of December, it found that iOS apps were slightly if noticeably more likely to crash. The relative gap diminished as researchers delved into less popular titles, although the sheer number of apps that crashed went up.

Apple FileVault 2 encryption cracked, but don't panic
FileVault 2 is a feature of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion that provides a way to encrypt a full disk drive so that it can only be used by those who know a password until now, that is. Passware, a company that makes forensic software used to recover lost passwords or open encrypted files to police and others, has announced that their Passware Kit Forensic 11.4 software (US$995) can extract the keys to FileVault 2 in an average of 40 minutes. Apple reopens online iPhone 4S sales in mainland China
Apple has reopened online sales of the iPhone 4S on the Chinese mainland, says China Daily. The option actually became available again on Wednesday local time, but customers wanting to buy a 4S may still be waiting for weeks. The Chinese storefront mentions an expected delivery date of "February," while a phone sales staffer tells the Daily that "If you pay today, you might get the items tomorrow, and no later than March 2." HP feels the heat, recalls 1040 and 1050 fax machines
Hey, office workers -- listen up. You know that cheap, god-forsaken fax machine that you've come to loathe something fierce? Well, if it's an HP unit, go ahead and peep the model number on the front -- don't worry, we'll wait. Apple rollin' in the dough: 75% of cell phone profits
The news just keeps getting better for Apple in the mobile phone business. Just yesterday, IDC reported that the company is in third place in terms of worldwide mobile phone sales. Today, Asymco analyst Horace Dediu announced that with a relatively small piece of the pie (IDC said 6 percent of market, Dediu says 8.7 percent), Apple is pulling in a whopping 75 percent of profits in the industry. We were so beguiled by AD's bamboo-bound smartphone that we had to track down the designer to get some hands-on time with these work-in-progress prototypes. We met up with Kieron-Scott Woodhouse (pun unintended) and he offered to bring along several of the latest prototypes for us to get to grips with. iBooks Author 1.01 out with updated EULA
An incremental release for iBooks Author has been released with changes to the program's EULA. The update is 143.50 MB, which seems pretty hefty for a EULA change. The change is an important one though, clarifying that Apple has rights over the format a book is in, not the content. If someone wants to charge a fee for an .ibooks formatted file, that document can only be sold or distributed through Apple, and that work will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple. The restriction does not include works distributed in non-.ibooks formats (such as the Kindle,) as TUAW's Erica Sadun previously discussed.

Canalys: More smartphones than PCs shipped in 2011
2011: the year Smartphones supplanted computers, at least according to the bundle of spreadsheets that just arrived from Canalys Research. US government close to custom Android use, denied iOS source
A handful of new tips have hinted that the US government's custom Android work is going beyond just military use. After soldiers, federal agencies and contractors would get the devices, CNN heard. The platform would be locked down enough only to store the documents at first, but it could be cleared send them over the cellular network in a matter of a "few months" if the sources were right.

Users report Rosetta problems after Security Update 2012-001
Several OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard users are reporting that Power PC-coded apps no longer work after applying Security Update 2012-001. The Apple support boards are full of stories about Rosetta apps crashing when any command is selected from the menu bar. Complaints seem heaviest from those running older versions of Microsoft Office, Quicken, FileMaker and Photoshop. Some users have recommended unofficial workarounds for the problem (attempt at your own risk), and it isn't known if Apple will fix the issue.

Analyst: Apple likely uninterested in ARM-based MacBooks

Apple and Motorola scuffle over iCloud and push email
Motorola scored a victory against Apple today when it won a permanent injunction against the company's iCloud and MobileMe push email service. According to FOSS Patents, the injunction is "preliminarily enforceable," which means Motorola can enforce the ruling right away by posting a 100 million euro bond. Posting a bond and enforcing this ruling is risky, though. If Apple appeals and wins, then Motorola will be liable for damages from enforcing this injunction early. Ok. In Japan begegnet man ja öfter mal einem dieser wirklich eigentümlich unwirklichen Androiden-Roboter. Sie ins Schaufenster als Mannequin zu setzen erscheint uns da nur logisch. Ob man allerdings der Japanischen Libido in ihrer eigenwilligen Liebe zum Roboter so weit vertrauen kann, dass sie sich davon anlocken lässt eine Valentines-Tag-Geschenk zu kaufen wollen wir mal dahin gestellt lassen. Der Robo blinzelt und reagiert mit diversen unergründlichen Roboteremotionen auf die Passanten. Wir hätten gerne auch ein Video von eben diesen Passanten gesehen, nehmen aber Vorlieb mit der Schaufensterpuppe nach dem Break.

Apple gets suspension of Motorola's injunction, sales resume
Motorola's German ban against Apple was short-lived Friday after the court suspended the ban following an appeal. Apple in a statement hours later told SlashGear that it would have iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 3G iPads back on Germany's online Apple Store soon. The iOS device builder reiterated the point of view behind the appeal, which contended that Motorola was violating policies around licensing patents on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms.

Apple resumes sales of 3G iPhones and iPads in Germany
Earlier today, Apple was forced to remove the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (not the iPhone 4S), and all 3G iPads from its online store in Germany. Apple stepped up its legal campaign against Samsung by expanding its Australian lawsuit to include 278 new claims which cover 22 patents and ten devices. The original suit, filed last year, targeted only the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which Apple claimed violated less than five of its patents. Sister Sledge sues Warner Music for lost digital revenue
Sister Sledge has filed a lawsuit Thursday against Warner Music Group. Zensierte Tracks durch iTunes Match: Apple arbeitet an Lösung
Cult of Mac hatte gestern in einem Artikel auf die gesäuberten Songs hingewiesen. Entdeckt wurde der Fehler, als einige Songs dem Besitzer unbekannt vorkamen, die nicht auf dem iPhone vorhanden waren und so aus iCloud nachgeladen werden mussten.
Der Unterschied war schnell gefunden: “F-Bombs” und sonstige Kraftausdrücke fehlten. Cult of Mac nennt auch vier Songs, die von iTunes Match nicht korrekt erkannt und durch saubere Versionen ersetzt wurden:

Megaupload co-founder's bail appeal rejected
While users housing content on the troubled Megaupload site were given a two-week reprieve, one of its co-founders is having less luck. Kim Dotcom has lost his appeal for bail, with prosecutors fearing that he would flee from New Zealand and return to his native Germany, possibly making him safe from extradition. Google declines EU call to freeze new privacy policy
The EU's Article 29 Working Party, which represents data protection rules, has sent a letter (PDF) unsuccessfully trying to persuade Google to temporarily stop implementing its unified privacy policy. Under concerns that the changes may affect much of Europe, the coalition of national and continental regulators wanted a "pause" so that there wasn't any confusion over privacy rights, according to chairman Jacob Kohnstamm. Two of the things that enchanted me most at Macworld | iWorld 2012 was the Jot stylus and a preview of Readdle's Remarks app. I've spent the past week looking at different note-taking apps to use with my new Jot Pro while waiting for Remarks to come out. The preview held not one, not two, but three TUAW writers enthralled as the Readdle folks showed it off. Does it live up to the hype? It really does. Niederlage im Patentstreit: Verkaufsverbot für iPhones und iPads
Apple hat nun im Patentstreit mit Motorola eine Niederlage erlitten, die äußerst negative Konsequenzen für das Unternehmen zur Folge hat. Laut dem Urteil des Mannheimer Landgerichts muss Apple nun zahlreiche UMTS-Modelle des iPhones und iPads aus dem Angebot nehmen.
Im Detail handelt es sich dabei um die 3G-Modelle des Apple iPad der ersten und zweiten Generation sowie das iPhone 3GS und das iPhone 4. Die betroffenen Produkte nahm der Elektronikkonzern aus Kalifornien bereits aus dem Online Store und gibt an, dass die Artikel "derzeit nicht verfügbar" sind. Das aktuelle iPhone 4S ist nicht von dem Urteil betroffen. Bei dem Patentstreit handelt es sich konkret um das Patent EP 1010336, das derzeit von Motorola gehalten wird. Apple: Es gibt keinen iMessage-Fehler
Wie Apple gegenüber The Loop sagte, waren die fehlgeleiteten Kurznachrichten eine “extrem seltene Situation, die dadurch zustande gekommen ist, dass der Mitarbeiter nicht die korrekte Service-Prozedur eingehalten habe und seine private SIM genutzt hat, um einem Kunden zu helfen, der keine funktionsfähige SIM besaß”. Weiter sagte Apple-Sprecherin Natalie Harrison, dass das Problem mittlerweile durch den betreffenden Mitarbeiter gelöst worden sei.
Abhilfe gegen die Irrläufer soll das einlegen der eigenen SIM sein, gefolgt von einem Deaktivieren und Reaktivieren von iMessage. Dadurch soll die Verknüpfung zwischen der iMessage ID und dem eigenen iOS-Gerät korrigiert werden.

Bericht: Apple führt Gespräche mit TV-Komponenten-Herstellern
Apple soll laut dem Analysten Gene Munster bereits im abgelaufenen Monat die Verhandlungen mit zahlreichen Display-Herstellern begonnen haben. Dabei dreht es sich unter anderem um die Panels für Apples Fernsehgerät. Gene Munster zitiert dabei Investoren als Insiderquelle und geht nun einmal mehr davon aus, dass Apples Pläne rund um die Entwicklung eines Fernsehers der Realität entsprechen. Laut dem Bericht soll es sich aber auch um verschiedene Displaygrößen gedreht haben. Die Rede ist von Bildschirmen zwischen 3,5 Zoll und 55 Zoll. Letztere Displaygröße wird den Vermutungen des Analysten nach beim Apple iTV zum Einsatz kommen. Motorola wins permanent injunction against Apple's iCloud in German court
There's another legal brouhaha brewing in Germany, where Motorola today won an injunction against Apple's iCloud. In a decision handed down from the infamous Mannheim Regional Court this morning, Judge Andreas Voss issued a permanent injunction against Cupertino's cloud-based service and any devices that use it, following a complaint that Motorola originally filed in April of last year.

UBS: Apple's share of smartphone revenue continues to grow
A new report from analyst firm UBS shows that while Apple is neither the largest cellphone maker nor the majority leader in phone platforms, it nonetheless dominates the entire industry in terms of revenue from phones, now taking 36 percent of all cell phone revenue (feature or smartphone) as of the end of 2011, even though it only sells nine percent of the world's cell phones. Congress: Google falls short on privacy answers
Google representatives were reported as being hesitant to fully answer questions relating to concerns over privacy on Thursday. The Mad Max-style post-apocalypse adventure uses the iD Tech 5 OpenGL engine and represents the first entry in the Rage franchise for the Mac.

Bug in iTunes Match may switch 'explicit' and 'clean' songs
A flaw in iTunes Match may inadvertently replace "explicit" tracks with "clean" versions for some users, according to reports by Cult of Mac reporters and corroborated by users elsewhere. A later update on 9to5Mac indicates that at least one user has heard back from Internet Software and Services head Eddy Cue's office that acknowledged the issue and said the company is working on on a fix.

AT&T connected Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S get Android Market Google Wallet installs
So far, Google Wallet has its official US availability on NFC-compatible handsets limited by unfriendly carriers with their own mobile payment services in mind, but it appears that is no lonnger the case for Nexus handsets with AT&T SIMs inserted. New STMicro chip may lead to super-bright phone camera flash
STMicro this week unveiled a chip that could have a major impact on the quality of low-light photography in cameras and smartphones. The STCF04 elevates the peak power of an LED-based flash from a few Watts at most to over 40. To STMicro, the power is likened to that of a floodlight and could either compensate for a very dense and therefore dimmer camera sensor resolution or else reach much further than a typical phone flash.

Skype rolls out update for Windows with full HD video calling, group screen sharing
Skype rolled out its version 5.8 software update for Windows users today, and it brings with it a couple of fairly notable features. That includes full HD video calling (provided you have a suitable webcam and internet connection, of course), video calling to Facebook users (regardless of whether they have Skype installed or not), and group screen sharing, which will let folks share either their entire desktop or a single application with other participants on a conference call. SoftBank profit cut in half through iPhone war with KDDI
SoftBank on Thursday said its fall quarter profit was cut in half from a year ago owed to demand for, and competition over, the iPhone 4S. It made the equivalent of $430.8 million in profit versus $858.8 million in late 2010. The company had spent nearly $393.4 million in promos to prevent customers from jumping to KDDI now that it was an iPhone provider, a feat which president Masayoshi Son said turned out wasn't necessary.

Apple patents 'virtual knobs' with pop-out sliders for mouse
The US Patent and Trademark Office today granted Apple a patent on the idea of a "virtual knob" that could show an on-screen knob with an active "slider" type control that appears underneath it only when a mouse, stylus or finger moves to control it. The idea would allow for skeuomorphic design of traditional knob controls (particularly widely used on real-world audio and video equipment) that overcomes the flat dimensionality of screen displays.

Dear Aunt TUAW, I'm a Mac IT professional, and often find myself configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing wireless networks. In the past I used AP Grapher to graph wireless strength and find competing Wi-Fi networks as I walk around my clients' offices. This allows me to pick the best channel to use with the least competition, troubleshoot wireless strength, and find the optimal location for my hardware. In Lion, AP Grapher has gone from unstable to unusable. I've found that it hasn't been updated since 2007. I have tested other Mac stumbler applications, but have yet to find one that works with Lion. Most crash on launch and others don't reliably detect wireless networks. French court finds Google abused Google Maps dominance
France on Wednesday found that Google had allegedly abused the dominance of Google Maps to squeeze out regional competitors. The American company was asked to pay 500,000 euros ($657,350) in direct compensation as well as a 15,000-euro ($19,720) fine. Bottin Cartographes had accused Google of price dumping by using its search ad business to give away the map service for free where Bottin had to charge for the same service.

SpaceX test-fires its 'super' rocket engines (video)
Spaceflight start-up, SpaceX, has been demonstrating the potency of its SuperDraco rockets, testing at its own facility over in Texas. The rockets will help land its Dragon spacecraft -- as demonstrated in a swish animation last year.
