Did the Galaxy S III just pop up on Samsung's support site?
Seriously, we can't caveat this one enough -- there is no way of knowing if this is in fact the Galaxy S III or, if it is, when it might come to market -- but, it looks like Samsungs "next big smartphone" just made a cameo on the company's support pages. Listed as the GT-i9300, the mystery device reared its head over at the Global Download Center of the United Arab Emerites site. French regulator to look into Free's cheap phone service
ARCEP, the French telecom regulator, has said it is going to inspect low-cost wireless provider Iliad's backbone network to make sure it is compliant with its bandwidth licensing requirements. The action takes place after Iliad's competitors raised complaints about Iliad's network performance and customer service. Iliad, which operates its wireless service under the Free name brand, denied the claims, discounting them as false rumors.

Amazon Kindle Fire cuts Galaxy Tab Android use share in half
Amazon's Kindle Fire is squeezing out other Android tablets for actual use online. New Flurry data shows that the Kindle Fire virtually cut the Samsung Galaxy Tab line's usage share in half, from 63 percent in November to 36 percent in January. Other devices saw a similar squeeze, which mostly came from the Kindle Fire's rampant sales rather than a drop in Android use.

Yesterday while I was on the show floor at Macworld | iWorld 2012, I came upon a 7-foot-tall scanner walking around. After I figured out that my cold medicine wasn't making me hallucinate, I knew that I was in the right place -- the Doxie booth. There I was able to interview Paul Scandariato of Doxie about their new DoxieGo + Wi-Fi mobile scanner and grab some video. The new scanner communicates with your Mac or iOS device over Wi-Fi, and allowing you to scan straight to the cloud if you wish. Seen at Macworld | iWorld 2012: $68,000 diamond speakers
Standing in the middle of the Macworld | iWorld 2012 exhibit floor looking a bit out of place, Alljack's $68,000 diamond-studded speakers -- fresh from CES -- are drawing a bit of attention. Inspired by a wine bottle and a flower, the speakers are crafted with Russian diamonds, gold plating, simulated wood grain and other decorative metal. Enfocus has released Instant PDF 10, an update to its PDF creation tool. Version 10 includes one of the most frequently requested features, annotated error reporting, as well as support for OS X Lion and Adobe CS 5.5. RIM CEO: we're looking into BBM on other platforms
RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins has continued his interviewing with hints the company might not be as closed to the possibility of BlackBerry Messenger on other mobile platforms as once thought. He told CrackBerry that he was still committed to the core BlackBerry platform and there weren't immediate plans, but that the company "should never rule this [possibility] out." The company did have staff exploring the possibility, but it would only go ahead if it was logical.

OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express ups MacBook Air to 480GB drive
Other World Computing has answered one of the more common calls among MacBook Owners and has put out a 480GB version of its Mercury Aura Pro Express. The new solid-state drive doubles the storage of its SATA3-based, 6Gbps model line. First White House Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra, steps down

NYPD meets FMI: Cop nabs iPhone thief in NYC
Don't walk past police with a stolen iPhone in your boot. According to the New York Times, a quick-thinking police officer and Apple's Find My iPhone managed to retrieve a woman's stolen iPhone. The woman was in a handbag store in Manhattan when a thief allegedly held her up at gunpoint and took her iPhone. Rubinstein: I was out of HP regardless of TouchPad results
HP's newly departed Jon Rubinstein has explained his reasons for going in an interview Friday. He clarified to The Verge that he had planned to leave not long after HP bought Palm and agreed to stay one to two years, both to help transition webOS to HP and out of affinity with Personal Systems Group head Todd Bradley. Microsoft reportedly working on Kinect-enabled laptops
It remains to be seen when or if they'll turn into actual products, but The Daily reports that Microsoft is at least working on getting its Kinect technology shoved into laptops. Apple leads 2011 Japanese tablet share by dominant margin
The iPad was the overwhelming leader in the Japanese tablet market during 2011, data from tracking firm BCN indicates. Apple held a 63.6 percent share of the Japanese market, easily eclipsing its closest rivals. Acer ranked second with just 9.8 percent, for instance, while Samsung came in third at 5.3 percent. Northern California district court judge Lucy Koh ruled late Thursday that multiple technologies can't dismiss a lawsuit over anti-poaching deals. Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit, Lucasfilm, and Pixar will have to face the allegations that they unfairly hurt compensation and job chances by making informal pacts to avoid recruiting each other's staff. ABI: Android has lost market share for first time
Apple's record iPhone sales have led to Android shrinking for the first time in its over three-year history, ABI Research estimated Friday. Operating on the belief that next-closest Samsung shipped 33 million smartphones, it had Android's collective share drop from 52.5 percent in the summer to 47 percent this fall. Apple acknolwedges AppleCare dispute on Italian web store
Apple has posted a link on its Italian web store, acknowledging its legal dispute with the local government over AppleCare warranties. The link -- simply titled "Communication to protect consumers" -- takes visitors to a PDF file, detailing the government's decision, which resulted in a €900,000 fine. Apple normally only provides a one-year AppleCare warranty for free, but Italian law grants shoppers a minimum of two years of coverage, which Apple is being asked to guarantee by March.

Das ging schnell. Schon am 18. Februar will ein Verbund aus 27 deutschen "Bildungsmediaverlagen" eine eigene Lösung für digitale Schulbücher auf der Didacta Messe in Hannover vorstellen. Die soll natürlich Endgeräte- und Betriebssystem-neutral sein, was wir erst mal gut finden, die Frage ist natürlich nur ob es eine ähnlich komfortable Lösung für die Produktion geben wird wie iBooks Author. Auf dem Markt wollen sie zum Schuljahrbeginn 2012/2013 sein, also nach den Sommerferien. Welche Funktionalitäten wir erwarten können ist noch nicht klar, ausser einer ominösen "Whiteboard-Funktion". Schutzhüllen-Bilder: Gibt es nur ein iPad 2S statt iPad 3?
Das iPad 3 wirft seine Schatten voraus. In wenigen Wochen soll es soweit, bis Apple die nächste Generation seines erfolgreichen Tablets vorstellt und natürlich geistern schon die ersten Schutzhüllen durch die Bloggosphäre, die mögliche Rückschlüsse zum Design erlauben. Doch wird es am Ende nur ein Mini-Update auf ein iPad 2S geben?
Die aktuelle Lage in der iPad 3-Gerüchte ist vielversprechend. Auch wenn noch nichts offiziell ist, wird schon bald (Ende Februar, Anfang März) der neue Tablet-Bollide erwartet und so ist es wenig verwunderlich, dass im Internet immer mal wieder Bilder von potentiellen Schutzhüllen für das neue iPad auftauchen.

Data confirms Apple again top in smartphones, 8.3% overall
Separate IHS iSuppli and Strategy Analytics studies Friday have backed Apple's rapid return to the top of the smartphone space in the fall. Determining that Samsung had shipped 36 million smartphones, slightly higher than Samsung's preliminary estimates, IHS iSuppli put Apple's 37 million iPhones just on top. Although Samsung nearly quadrupled the amount of smartphones it shipped and moved more year-long, Apple's higher starting point meant it could just double its yearly shipments to stay competitive.

Samsung loses second patent claim against Apple in Germany
Samsung has suffered its second patent loss against Apple in as many weeks. The company has said that a German court has ruled that its second of three patent claims related to 3G/UMTS has been rejected. The latest blow in its bitter ongoing legal battle with Apple comes after the same court ruled that the first of the three patents that it is asserting against Apple was also rejected. T-Mobile Austria: Hacker knacken Kundendatenbank
Wie aus der Pressemitteilung hervorgeht seien Bank- und Zahlungsdaten nicht betroffen, aber auch nur diese verschlüsselt gewesen.
Die restlichen Kundendaten wurden daher unverschlüsselt verwaltet. Dementsprechend wird eine Änderung des Kundenkennworts dringend empfohlen! Weiters sollte man die letzten Rechnungen nach Auffälligkeiten sowie die Vertragseinstellungen und etwaige Zusatzpakete überprüfen.
Laut T-Mobile dauern die Untersuchungen in diesem Fall noch an. Derzeit ist T-Mobile kein Fall bekannt, in dem Zugriff auf Bank- und Finanzdaten gegeben hat. Auch wie lange die Hacker Zugang zur Datenbank hatten ist noch nicht bekannt.

Apple beschreibt in dem Patentantrag die ärgerliche Situation, für mehrere Geräte mehrere Fernbedienungen auf dem Wohnzimmertisch platzieren zu müssen – oder sich mit einer komplizierten Universl-Fernbedienung herumzuschlagen. Jedoch gab es zuletzt Gerüchte, dass Apple über die Einstellung der Profi-Mac-Reihe nachdenken soll. Samsung Quartalsergebnisse: 3,5 Milliarden Gewinn, die Hälfte davon Mobile

Sie kommen nicht ganz an Apple ran, aber der Gewinn bei Samsung im vierten Quartal ist mit 3,5 Milliarden Euro schon erstaunlich. Immerhin eine Steigerung von knapp 1,4 Milliarden. AppleInsider hat den Patentantrag entdeckt, der MagSafe-Kabel für andere Anschlüsse beschreibt. Die Idee erstreckt Apple nicht nur auf eine mögliche Alternative zum bisherigen Dock-Anschluss, sondern auch für die Kopfhörer-Buchse. Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice
A seemingly minor decision for Windows 8 in the post-developer preview versions has shown an about-face by Microsoft in its approach to design. During new demos on Thursday to TechRadar, Windows 8 communications lead Chris Flores explained that users wouldn't be allowed to change the background of the main Metro screen to their own photo. Scaling was an issue, but Microsoft had also decided that the home screen tiles would cover it up too much, defeating the point of a custom image.

Id Software updates Rage HD to version 2, refines controls
Id Software's non-franchise game for iOS devices, Rage HD, has now been updated to version 2.0. The game, which puts players in the middle of a "reality TV" show called Mutant Bash, is a first-person rail shooter that now includes in-app purchasing of additional episodes, higher-resolution player and weapon graphics, better video out support for VGA, component cables and HDMI under iOS 5, and various performance enhancements for controlling the game.

RealMac, Milen, Impending team up on new to-do app Clear
UK-based RealMac Software, known for titles like Rapidweaver and Little Snapper, will be releasing a new to-do app in the next few weeks called Clear. The app is a collaboration with MacHeist organizer Phill Ryu, engineer Milen Dzhumerov and artist David Lanham, and puts an iPhone-centric, gesture-oriented but minimalist spin on the idea of a to-do list, focusing on visual design rather than excessive features.

Sandvox for Mac updated with slide shows and more Lion features
With iWeb slowly fading into obscurity, Mac users who want to generate websites without a lot of trouble have been turning to apps such as Sandvox. Apple extends charitable matching to part-time workers
Apple retail workers' advocacy group AAPLRetailUnion has tweeted that the company's charitable gift-matching program, begun by CEO Tim Cook in September, has now been extended to part-time employees in the US (and will go worldwide soon). The program matches donations to 501c(3) charities by US workers up to $10,000 per year. In the short time the program has been active, Apple and its employees have given over $2.6 million to charity.

Valve debuts free Steam Mobile iPhone app
Valve has released Steam Mobile for iOS, a free app for the iPhone. According to Valve, "With the free Steam app for iOS, you can participate in the Steam community wherever you go. Samsung: mobile half of profit, tablet demand up in March
Samsung has detailed its full results following a brief preview earlier in the month. The Korean electronics giant mustered the equivalent of $42 billion in revenue, but owed much of this and its profit to its cellphone business. Almost half of its working profit, $2.3 billion out of $4.7 billion, came from its mobile group.

Potential Samsung Galaxy SII-sibling heads to China via the FCC
A mysteriously packaged Samsung device departed the FCC's secure zone with a few question marks over its character. We know it's got GSM/EDGE 850 - 1900 radios and can access WCDMA Bands II and V, plus the usual WiFi and Bluetooth gear, but that's about it. First full white space wireless goes live in North Carolina
The first official, non-trial instance of white space wireless has gone live in the US on Thursday. The Wilmington, North Carolina access point is so far intended just for linking outdoor monitoring cameras and systems. It can still provide unlicensed, open wireless access at ranges as far as 328 feet, or well beyond the range of Wi-Fi.

Vintage Radio is an interesting idea for an iPhone app: It's a ton of various old-time radio recordings (more than 34,000 mystery, horror, comedy, and other old 1930s and 1940s radio shows), all accessible to stream on demand. The app allows you to browse and search shows, set up and save playlists or even share shows on Facebook and Twitter. The selection is really amazing. I like a lot of old-time radio, and this app does have pretty much everything you need. If you have a lot of long car trips or plane rides, it can really help fill the time. Garmin debuts new iOS apps at MacWorld, adds social function
New social media functions, new apps and new features for its iOS apps mark navigation software and hardware maker Garmin's presence at MacWorld/iWorld, currently going on in San Francisco. Samsung 2011 Q4 earnings official: $42 billion in sales, $4.7 billion operating profit

Briefly: Gekko to launch next week, Shaderlight 2.1 update
iPhonso has announced that its mobile financial tool, Gekko, will be launched in the App Store on January 31. The universal app is fully customizable and allows users to follow financial news from their favorite websites. Gekko also includes a smart caching system and built-in ad blocking to help improve page load times, as well as raw financial data for every stock. Lingual adds Siri language translation to jailbroken iPhones
Now that we can jailbreak the iPhone 4S, jailbreak developers can finally use Siri in their tweaks. One such tweak is Lingual which adds language translation to our favorite voice assistant. The tweak, available from the Big Boss repository in Cydia, lets you say "Siri, What is how are you in Spanish" and Siri will respond with "Cómo estás." The tweak uses the Bing API to handle all the translation requests and, as a result, can support more than 30 languages.
