Notion Ink releases ICS Alpha update for Adam tablet, teases new device (video)
We had mixed feelings about Notion Ink's Adam slate when it debuted last year, but if you're one of the converts who took one home, then it looks like your faith is being rewarded with an ICS update. Okay, it's only an alpha build, so not everything is working just yet -- that'd be the camera, 3G, USB storage and flash drive, oh and the light sensor. If these *cough* minor niggles don't phase you, the "upgrade" -- shown in the video after the break -- is yours for the taking. Apple stores coming to southern France, northern Switzerland
Two more future Apple stores have been uncovered thanks to magazine features and a European Mac website, retail tracking site ifoAppleStore reports. One will be in the French city of Aix-En-Provence, not far from Marseilles, while the other will be in the north of Switzerland where it meets the French and German borders in the town of Basel. A magazine from the Aix-en-Provence region revealed renderings for the planned store, showing it to be nearly transparent.

IDG research shows iPad's business dominance
A new study by IDG shows that not only are iPads becoming a powerful tool for business, but that Apple's tablets are increasingly replacing notebook computers in the office. The study, titled "iPad for Business Survey" is a detailed and colorful look at trends surrounding the iPad worldwide.
The 16-page PDF (click here to download) includes some facts about iPad adoption in business that are fascinating. As you might expect, a high percentage of professionals said that they "always" use the iPad for web browsing, reading, and news consumption. Samsung to sell $1b in debt to fund Austin mobile tech plant
Samsung disclosed Monday that its new Austin plant might require that it sell $1 billion in debt for funding. It expects to sell a five-year bond and has been talking to banks to help orchestrate the deal. The arrangement would be its first significant sale of the kind in over a decade.

Native Instruments teases upcoming mixer
Native Instruments, a maker of DJ hardware, has just teased an upcoming product through a video embedded below. Technical details are non-existent at this time, but the new device looks like a combination of the company's current Maschine production studio and its Kontrol X1 user interface. It combines an external mixer and turntables.

iPhone 4S jailbreak demonstration video
The A5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4S is making excellent progress. Chronic dev team member @DHowett posted a video to YouTube that shows an iPhone 4S with an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1. The short video shows Cydia running on the handset and the phone resetting without the need to connect it to a computer.
Pod2g, who's working on the jailbreak along with @planetbeing, @MuscleNerd and@p0sixninja, confirmed the video is the real deal and hinted that the jailbreak will be released soon.

Steve Jobs action figure cancelled following legal threats
Saying he still believed "that we have not overstepped any legal boundaries," Tandy Cheung of In Icon announced that it wills top the offer, production and sale of the eerily photogenic Steve Jobs action figure it had offered earlier this month, reports PC World. In Icon had come under "immense pressure" from lawyer representing both Apple and Jobs' family and had originally said he would defy Apple's wishes and produce the figure anyway.

Mamiya, Leaf team up on medium-format cameras
Mamiya Digital Imaging and Leaf Imaging, makers of medium-photography cameras, have merged. The new company, Mamiya Leaf, will combine their resources to develop new products, CNET reported. Before this, both companies produced devices controlled by Phase One digital backs.

'Wintel' PCs down to 50% share of all personal computing
Asymco's Horace Dediu in an off-site post has highlighted just how much smaller the market share is for the traditional x86-based Windows PC, or Wintel, in the total computing space. Having managed a near-complete monopoly between about 1995 and 2005, Microsoft's platform is now down to about 50 percent when including all Android, iOS, and Mac devices as part of the mix. The market hadn't been as diverse since the early 1980s.

Apple jumps to 9th most valuable brand in the world
Apple is now the eighth most valuable brand in the world says a recent Bloomberg report that ranks the top 100 global brands. The brand rankings use five unnamed criteria and exclude privately-held companies. Brand value includes the name, logo, image, and other intangibles which identifies a company to a consumer.
The top ten list is heavily dominated by technology firms including IBM, Microsoft, Google, Intel and HP. Apple trails IBM, Microsoft, Google, Intel, but comes out ahead of number ten HP.
Apple's brand value stands at US$33.493 billion, up from $21.143 billion in 2010. Apple increased its value 58% year over year, climbing from 17th place last year to 8th this year.

Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab get security nod, certified for government agencies
We didn't have much to complain about when it came to Samsung's flagship phone and tablet, so we're glad to see that both the Galaxy S II and Tab 10.1 have managed to jump through the requisite hoops for FIPS certification. The business-centric feature means that both Samsung devices have been given the thumbs up for use in governmental agencies and other similarly stickler-for-the-rule industries. Surface 2.0 now shipping, packing PixelSense and Gorilla Glass

Briefly: Exposure 4 announced, Corel Painter 12.1 released
Alien Skin Software has announced Exposure 4, a new version of its image effects plug-in for Photoshop. A completely redesigned interface has been added with the latest release, along with new controls for exploring a range of effects or creating custom presets. Black & White and Color Film have also been combined into a single filter, and a new text search feature allows users to easily search for filters. Exposure 4 is expected to be released in February at a cost of $250. However, current Exposure customers will be able to purchase an upgrade license for $99.

Waterproofing inventor in talks with Apple, Samsung
The maker of a waterproofing technology that coats components so completely that a demonstration was shown to Electronista at CES by dropping an iPhone 4 into a fish tank and having it continue to work is apparently in talks with both Apple and Samsung, reports Pocket-Lint. Called HzO Waterblock, the coating does not add weight or interfere with heat dispersal but makes smartphones and other devices effectively waterproof, going far beyond present abilities.

Plans confirm Swiss Apple Store
Slowly, but surely, Apple's plans to build a retail store in the Swiss city of Basel are beginning to shape up.
As reported by ifoAppleStore, the site for the store was first spotted by Swiss bloggers almost two years ago. The bloggers at MacPrime.ch have now dug up blueprints confirming that Apple's architect has been busy revising plans to meet with city regulations.
The original design showed a 30-foot tall glass curtain wall that encompassed the ground and mezzanine levels of the two-level store. These plans have been changed, now showing the existing building at Freie Strasse

HzO's WaterBlock technology could make it to Apple products
While our very own Victor Agreda, Jr. checked out the Liquipel waterproofing technology at CES last week, others were checking out competitor HzO's WaterBlock technology. The Utah company told the Pocket-lint blog that they've been talking to both Samsung and Apple about applying the nanoscale waterproofing technology to upcoming phones.

Arcade classic Soul Calibur to hit iOS Thursday
Namco Bandai will release Soul Calibur for iOS devices on Thursday, January 19th, featuring Retina Display-level graphics, Game Center support and virtual pad controls that the company promises will better mimic traditional console controls. The release of the first Soul Calibur game for iOS precedes the release of Soul Calibur V for PS3 and Xbox consoles on February 2nd. The iOS game will have six modes and 19 playable characters.

App Store adds pop-up information windows

iPhone 4S seen with untethered jailbreak
A member of the Chronic Dev Team has taken the exploit that allowed for an "untethered" jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 on A4 devices and made it work on A5 devices, as demonstrated by a video showing an iPhone 4S running the stock operating system rebooting with its jailbroken apps (including Cydia and iFile) intact, reports hacker pod2g. The new technique is planned for a public release in the near future, though pod2g was not specific about when.

Apple now eighth most valuable brand, up from 17th
Interbrand's Best Global Brands of 2011, released today, shows Apple making a jump from 17th to eighth in the list of the world's most valuable brands, with a 58 percent gain in brand value to $33.5 billion. The move was the biggest in the top 100 companies, and saw Apple leapfrog Disney and HP, AppleInsider reports. The upgrading caps a record year for the company that may well see it become (at least temporarily) the number one computer vendor.

Windows 8 on ARM to demand Secure Boot, exclude Linux
Microsoft's Secure Boot feature will be mandatory on ARM-based Windows 8 tablets, according to a discovery in Windows hardware certification documents just found this weekend. While it will be optional on x86, disabling Secure Boot "must not be possible" on ARM. As described, it would prevent any unsigned operating system from running on the resulting hardware, including Linux and variants on it, like Android.

AllThingsD has an interesting story on their site about the Newton and a few specifics on the end of its short life. At the 1997 Worldwide Developer Conference (held the year Steve returned to Apple), Steve was asked about the Newton, and he said, "if somebody would just make a little thing where you're connected to the Net at all times, and you've got a little keyboard. God, I'd love to buy one." In what will surprise approximately no one, he went on to describe how he hated the stylus, calling it a "little scribble thing."

Whatsapp free SMS app temporarily unavailable, fuels hoaxes
Whatsapp, an inexpensive app that offered a service similar to Apple's own iMessage but across platforms and iOS versions, has temporarily been pulled by the app developer for reasons not yet made clear. The company recently patched a potential security issue, but says this has nothing to do with the unavailability, and that it has "submitted a new version and [is] awaiting approval by Apple." It has also published a blog post warning users of hoaxes circulating about the app.

OnLive goes from gaming to Desktop and TV
The folks from OnLive, who we met up with last week at CES, are understandably apologetic about the fact that the iOS app for gaming hasn't yet shown up in the App Store. But though they may be sorry it hasn't appeared, OnLive's Bruce Grove is still mum on what the holdup is all about, only saying that the app is still going through Apple's "approval process." Is Apple holding the app up for breaking subscription rules, or did OnLive submit it a little late to the App Store over the holiday season? Grove doesn't budge, only saying that OnLive is currently "learning about the process a little more." At any rate, the gaming app is still due out "soon" -- whenever that may be.

An insistence on earlier pricing policies from Intel and Microsoft may put Windows 8 tablets out of contention, notebook PC builders getting into the field claimed Monday. Intel was reported by Digitimes contacts as unwilling to cut profit margins on its Clover Trail-based Atom chips, while Microsoft wasn't planning on trimming its Windows 8 price. iTunes Match. Jetzt auch hier.
Der Wechsel vom alten iTunes-Fairplay-DRM (128kbit) zum DRM-freien “iTunes plus” (256kbit) würde mich über den klassischen Upgrade-Weg über 100 Euro kosten. Oder ich werfe 25 Euro zu iTunes Match, lasse iTunes alles in die Wolke schieben und als iTunes plus-Dateien, ohne DRM, mit verbesserter Qualität, wieder herunter laden. Zudem, so meine Hoffnung, lassen sich damit mein Mac Mini und das MacBook miteinander verbinden und syncen Dateien und Metadaten. Und auf meinem MacBook wird Festplattenplatz frei, da ein iTunes aus Match heraus nicht nur downloaden, sondern auch streamen kann. Und die 25 Euro bezahlen das für ein Jahr. Und die aufgewerteten und heruntergeladenen Dateien gehören danach weiterhin mir. Deal?
Soweit die Theorie. Jetzt ist meine Infrastruktur aber nicht sonderlich übersichtlich…

iPhone 5 wird dünner – Gerüchte verdichten sich
Um neue Kunden zu gewinnen, will Apple bei seinem kommenden iPhone (iPhone 5?) das Design im großen Stile verändern. Vieles spricht dafür, dass das Smartphone schlanker werden soll. Zudem plant Apple den Einbau einer absoluten Turbo-CPU.

We felt compelled to get our hands onto JVC's 4K-resolution-shooting camcorder. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) the company wasn't letting us take footage with the kit, but we were allowed plenty of unsupervised time with the device. You'll notice how retro this whole thing looks -- the hefty unit is placed in a housing that wouldn't be out of place with a VHS-C camcorder from the early '90s. There's no mount for additional lenses (the $10,000 Red Scarlet uses interchangeable Canon lenses), which means that you won't have any flexibility if you need to set up a complex shot on the fly. Four years ago today, Apple introduced the MacBook Air, then the world's thinnest notebook. It was Steve Jobs's last Macworld appearance and the next to last Macworld keynote for Apple.
