Headphone-wearing pedestrian injuries triple as audiophiles stop noticing onrushing trains
The number of pedestrians injured or killed while wearing headphones has tripled in the last six years: 16 oblivious PMP users were offed in 2004, the number rising to 47 for last year. The research, carried out by Dr Richard Lichenstein at the University of Maryland found that headphone wearers became "inattentionally blind" to dangers such as passing cars and on-rushing trains. That's not us being flip either: 55 percent of the incidents involved locomotives. The majority of victims were male (68 percent) and under the age of 30 (67 percent): which puts your average Engadget reader in the center of the danger zone -- take it from us guys: sometimes it's better to press pause, "Baby, baby" will still be there when you've crossed the railway.

SOPA bill revisions to resume in February
Republican Congressman and Judiciary Committee chair Lamar Smith stated Tuesday that the Stop Online Piracy Act would resume the drafting process in February. Despite hopes from opponents that a shelving meant it was stopped, the contentious bill would be back to the markup phase. Pre-election retreats were the immediate reason for the pause, Smith said.

Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang quits the company
Yahoo on Tuesday said that its co-founder Jerry Yang was leaving the company. He had immediately resigned both from the Board of Directors and "all other positions" at the search giant, including a board spot at Alibaba. He sought to "pursue other interests" beyond the company but cast it as an amicable leap, putting his confidence in new CEO Scott Thompson.

Yahoo's Jerry Yang quits the company he co-founded, walks away from Alibaba as well
The long, drawn-out, oftentimes melodramatic saga revolving around Yahoo itself and co-founder Jerry Yang is well-documented. Perhaps too well. Thankfully for us all, that ends today. As of January 17th, he has resigned from Yahoo's Board of Directors and all other positions with the company, and moreover, has reigned from the Boards of Yahoo Japan Corporation and Alibaba Group Holding Limited. We most recently heard from Yang during his interview at AsiaD, where he sounded none too pleased about the going-ons there. We often hear about iPhone sales during Apple's quarterly earnings report, but we don't talk about secondary sales very much. HP appoints Bill Veghte as chief strategy officer, will lead 'cloud and webOS open source initiatives'

Apple patents clothes that track how you wear them, tell you when it's time to update your wardrobe
There's a huge problem with working out that has yet to be solved: when, precisely, do our workout clothes become too worn to wear anymore? Lamar Smith: SOPA markup to resume in February
Thought the White House was able to put enough of smackdown on SOPA to kill the bill entirely? You thought wrong. We'd heard that the extremely controversial legislation would be delayed until a few concerns were ironed out, and according to House Judiciary Committee Chair Lamar Smith -- the author of the bill -- markup is expected to continue next month, as soon as both parties return from their retreats. Old iPhones lead among used trades by iPhone buyers
Amongst iPhone buyers selling or giving away old phones, 49 percent of the used devices are actually earlier iPhones, suggests Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. In a recent survey of iPhone 4S buyers, CIRP found that 53 percent of them were handing off an older phone for money or as a gift. Older iPhones dominated trades in that group, with BlackBerry and Android smartphones trailing behind at 21 and 15 percent, respectively. "Other" phones represented only 15 percent.

Sony intros USB 3.0 MicroVault drives, UHS-I SD cards
Among other announcements, Sony took the opportunity at CES to reveal its USB 3.0 MicroVault flash drives and new flagship SD cards with the ultra-high speed interface (UHS-I). The MicroVault drives are split into the USM-Q, USM-P and USM-M ranges, with the Q the flagship. It gets USB 3.0 compatibility for up to 120MBps read speeds and 90MBps write speeds.

Samsung aims for all-day smartphone batteries in 2012
Samsung product innovation VP Kevin Packingham in an interview from CES claimed his company had a goal of true all-day battery life on smartphones this year. Along with getting higher battery capacities, Samsung would optimize the wireless activity on cellular and Wi-Fi, as well as tune other components, he told CNET. He admitted that phones like the Droid Charge weren't ideal, in part because of the use of new technologies like LTE that still had young chipssets.

Audio workarounds in iMovie for iOS
While iMovie for iOS is a technological tour-de-force that somehow crams a complete video editor into the limited real estate of an iOS app, it does have its Achilles Heel -- a less-than-stellar ability to work with audio. Macworld author, TidBits Editor, and all-around nice guy Jeff Carlson, who also just happens to have written The iMovie '11 Project Book for Peachpit Press, has written a nice roundup of audio workarounds to help you with iMovie for iOS.

The Model S Professional for Mac incorporates mechanical key switches which produce a distinctive clicking sound when a key is successfully struck to give the feedback absent from the scissor-motion keys on notebooks and some desktop keyboards. Rumor: RIM trying to court buyout from Samsung
A contentious rumor Tuesday alleges that RIM has been trying to get a buyout offer from Samsung. The "trusted sources" for BGR had the company talking to anyone interested in buying some or all of the BlackBerry maker, but co-CEO Jim Balsillie was reportedly "going hard" for a Samsung deal. Google demos QR code Gmail access, claims something better in store
What's the big G up to here, then? It seems the Gmail team has been tinkering with a new secure method of accessing your precious email. Type your credentials into your phone, then scan a QR code in the browser to log in. It's ideal for public machines where typing your password might gift your credentials to any key-logging software. Sadly though, it seems the venture was just an experiment, with Google employee Dirk Balfanz confirming so on his Plus account. BubCap Pro updates tamper protection to the big league
I first looked at BubCap by Paperclip Robot last summer, finding it handy for parents, during demonstrations and preventing inadvertent access to the iPhone or iPad Home button. At that time, there were three BupCaps models available: the Regular, the Ultra and the Max models (in order of resiliency).

Windows 8 tablets to need 5-point touch, scrap Ctrl-Alt-Del
A scouring of Microsoft's Windows 8 hardware requirements document has uncovered very specific conditions for Windows 8 tablets. Every slate will need at least a 1366x768 display with five-point multi-touch, ruling out the cheaper displays used on some Windows 7 tablets. In a symbolic change of the times, the company will also require that the familiar Ctrl-Alt-Delete shortcut for managing logins and the OS be replaced with a Windows Key-plus-power command instead.

120 MB/s reads and 90 MB/s writes are far from the fastest in the thumbdrive game, but they're nothing to sneeze at either. iPhone 4S ship times shrink to 3-5 days
Apple showed it was just now starting to catch up to iPhone 4S demand on Tuesday after the online Apple Store saw lead times contract. Having been set back by a week for nearly all of the smartphone's existence, orders for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon models now take three to five days to ship regardless of capacity. Individual carriers make it more difficult to gauge demand, although Verizon is showing a delay only on the white 32GB iPhone.

Pantech next to sign Android patent deal with Microsoft
Microsoft may have already signed patent licensing agreements with 70 percent of the US Android manufacturers, including some of the biggest names in the market, but that doesn't mean Redmond's about ready to hit the brakes anytime soon. iTunes Match to open to more Latin American countries, Europe
A check of the iTunes Match availability page shows that Apple has launched the service in 19 new countries, with focus on Latin America and Europe. As of today, Apple has enabled iTunes Match for Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.
That takes the total number of countries with availability to 37. Additionally, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Netherlands now have access to iTunes in the Cloud compatibility for music and music videos, a first for those customers. Enjoy, folks!

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter
Updated US sales estimates from the NPD Group hint that Apple sold about 4.9 million Macs worldwide during the December quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Data is now in for all three months, showing US sales up 12 percent year-over-year. The 4.9 million figure is, however, a lowered forecast on Munster's part -- 300,000 units below a previous target, even if that would still mean global growth of 18 percent.

Apple sues Samsung again in Germany over Galaxy S II design
Apple has updated its attack on Samsung with a new lawsuit in Germany. The Dusseldorf complaint accuses Samsung of violating design rights with ten smartphones, headlined by the Galaxy S II but also including the Galaxy S Plus. Motorola Mobility brings RAZR to Land of the Rising Sun
Motorola Mobility has announced its intentions to bring the super-thin RAZR smartphone to the shores of Japan. Nissan stellt selbstheilendes Scratch Shield Case für iPhones in Aussicht

Nissan verwendet bei einigen seiner Automodelle bereits seit 2005 einen Lack namens Scratch Shield mit der Fähigkeit zur Selbstreparatur, wobei die Zauberzutat das hochelastische Kunstharz Polyrotaxane darstellt, das langsam aber hartnäckig in seine Ursprungsform zurückdrängt, wodurch kleinere Kratzer innerhalb von einigen Stunden wieder verschwinden. Court: Oracle can't start Google trial without lower damages
Oracle's already delayed trial against Google for alleged copyright and patent violations in Android has been set back indefinitely in an attempt to lower damage requests. Judge William Alsup ruled late last week that he wouldn't set a trial date until Oracle sets a "proper damages methodology." He wanted the company to go lower than what it wanted following tossed patent claims and accused Oracle of being interested solely in high damages worth billions rather than compensation for actual losses.

A new company that debuted at CES is looking to figure out a way to give users of web video (both content owners and viewers) exactly what each of them wants without ruining the experience for either side.
Shodogg wants to be the middleman of the video experience, tapdancing on the line between protective content owners and content-hungry users. What might that look like? Well, if you have a web-enabled television (and if CES was any indication, that's a question of "when," not "if"), and you are playing a video on your iPad, you can send that video to the TV easily and as securely as possible.
I am an optimist, so to me this is a very exciting thing because everybody wins and I have hope that all parties involved will be interested since it strikes a balance that seems to meet everyone's requirements.

Last week at CES 2012, I met up with Line2 CEO Peter Sisson; he is a man who's done a lot of butting heads with big companies over what started off as a pretty simple proposition. Line2's basic concept was to create a second line (for business or personal calls) on your iPhone. The company had a booth at CES, and while some of our chat with them had to go through a French/English barrier, they very nicely explained to us how they're doing business and allowing almost anyone to make custom 3D printed objects, even through iOS.
The company can print completely custom items through its official website. You can upload a completely custom 3D file, and by following its web interface, you can have Sculpteo print the object out on demand. There are plenty of specialized public high schools in New York City and in September of 2012 that roster of educational institutions will grow by one more when the Academy for Software Engineering opens its doors. The school will greet its first class of incoming freshman at the beginning of the next school year and become the first NYC public school dedicated to pumping out programers. Beyond filling our desperate need for more engineers the school will be special in several respects. For one, it will be a "limited, unscreened" institution, which means grades and attendance records are not considered for admission -- only interest. Sony teases Dot Switch: Multi-display future coming in February (video)
There's only so much Sony could show off at the world's biggest consumer electronics show. According to the video embedded below, the company's looking to tie together all of your (presumably Sony-branded) screens with a single "Dot Switch". On the concept demo, a pair of ethereal arms are able to control music, TV, lights and a confetti shower through what appears to be an Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. The company's keeping pretty vague on the technicalities of it all at this point, but it looks like it would forgo the typical infra-red communication seen on other devices. Auch die Katzenprominenz stürzte sich mit gewetzten Krallen ins Getümmel und buhlte an der CES um die Gunst des Publikums. Bei unseren Kollegen funktioniert die rosa Charme-Attacke offensichtlich gut, denn sie haben alles mitgenommen, was ihnen dort an Hello Kitty-Kram in die Augen stach. Erfreulicherweise sind, wie ihr unten in der Galerie sehen könnt, nicht nur Laptoptaschen und Handyhüllen dabei, sondern auch Karaokemaschinen, ein Wecker mit Laserbeamer, drahtlose Telefone und einiges mehr. Treehouse Labs was one of a few companies inside the booth of a semiconductor company, because Treehouse is using that company's chips for its own products. Hongpaiyihao (literally meaning "red group number one"), a Beijing-based new media company, has launched a 9.7-inch Tegra 2 tablet that's "tailor-made for government officials" and patriotic consumers. iPad 3 display shipments may top 7m by launch, 10m after
Shipments of the rumored 2048x1536 display behind the upcoming next-generation iPad may quickly overtake, but not completely replace, the iPad 2 based on purported new leaks. Apple's New York City education event is nothing less than a rethinking of how publishers create e-books as a whole, leaks divulged Monday. One scoop characterized the process to Ars Technica as a "GarageBand for e-books" that would let authors and publishers easily build e-books for iPads and iPhones, including interactive books. iBooks would also start supporting ePub 3, which supports audio and video natively and would make the store much more standards-compatible than Apple's custom take on ePub 2.

Oregon Scientific's Portable WiFi Projector comes with a hinge, flirts with your ceiling
A projector from Oregon Scientific, you say? Nope, it's not one of those clock and weather projectors, but rather an actual DLP pico projector. At CES 2012, the company was kind enough to show us an early prototype of its Portable WiFi Projector that'll handle FWVGA (854 x 480) at 1,000:1 contrast and a good 80 lumens of brightness (50 if powered by USB alone). Apparently at 3.2 meters from the wall, such combination should produce a clear 120-inch wide picture in total darkness, so we shall see. Don't get your hopes up about having that controversial Steve Jobs action figure adorning your desk or bookshelf. The Hong Kong businessman behind the product has decided to halt all production of the realistic Jobs doll.

I have to say, of all the product names that I heard and saw at CES 2012 last week (and there were plenty of them), TourWrist was by far my favorite. And the app is pretty interesting as well. After Dark's Starry Night screensaver returns to Mac
Mind Console Productions has ported a version of a classic 1989 screensaver called Starry Night, part of the After Dark collection from Berkeley Systems. The new version is rather ironically ported from scratch based on a re-creation of it made for Windows systems. The original was first released for Mac before appearing on Windows, but no universal binary of the After Dark collection was ever made. The last official version for OS X was released in 2003.

Verizon to stop allowing legacy Alltel devices to be activated on its network, starting today
It's been three years and two days since Verizon officially closed its acquisition of Alltel, and it looks like Big Red's finally putting the sledgehammer down on activating legacy devices from the purchased network. We just received official word from a Verizon spokesperson that effective today, the carrier will no longer allow you to bring over an Alltel device to a retail outlet and get it activated on their network. iPhone and Words with Friends save a life
The widely-played word game Words with Friends has a built-in chat feature that lets players talk to each other, and that may well have saved a man's life. According to KCTV, a player in Missouri named Beth Legler was chatting with a fellow player from Australia named Georgie Fletcher who claimed her husband was feeling ill.
