Apple might build Oregon datacenter near Facebook, Google

Apple was claimed Saturday to be considering another major datacenter in Prineville, Oregon. The iPhone maker was reported by sources for The Oregonian as exploring the possibility of a 160-acre location that would be roughly a quarter-mile away from Facebook's own northern servers and in the same general area as Amazon and Google. UK prosecutors get HP TouchPads, not iPads, for court pilot

The UK's Crown Prosecution Service made an unusual decision for a test pilot with tablets for its attorneys, officials said Friday. A Norwich crown court told The Guardian it will give prosecutors 35 HP TouchPads, supposedly worth up to £1,000 ($1,560) each, to keep court documents digitally during cases. Police would send information directly to lawyers with the goal of ultimately saving as much as £50 million ($78 million) by the next UK parliament.

Carrier IQ explains code in detail, doesn't talk consent

Carrier IQ marketing VP Andrew Coward in an interview late Friday went into much more detail on its smartphone monitoring process. He likened what was happening for The Register to a fishing boat looking only for bigger fish, where Carrier IQ's tracking was only keeping information that was directly relevant to the call and data checks. UK courts to introduce tablets, vow to cut back on tree killing ways

It may not be retiring the powdered wigs just yet, but according to The Guardian, the British government is ready to replace traditional paper documents with tablets in UK courtrooms. Starting in April, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will give slates to Welsh and English prosecutors to store all forms and evidentiary items, later extending the offer to judges, jurors and defense lawyers. To start, administrators will give 35 Hewlett-Packard tablets to prosecutors in Norfolk as a test for the bigger roll out, which is estimated to save around £50 million (or around $78 million) in dead trees across the UK. Apple gegen Samsung: US-Richterin lehnt Galaxy-Verkaufsverbot ab

Filed under: Companies Das Patent-Drama geht in die nächste Runde: Apple konnte am US-Gericht in San Jose, Kalifornien, mit dem gegen Samsung angestrebten Verkaufsverbot für Galaxy-Phones und -Tablets nicht durchdringen. Wie Reuters berichtet, entschied Richterin Lucy Koh, dass es nicht klar sei, ob eine einstweilige Verfügung gegen die fraglichen Samsung-Geräte Apple tatsächlich irreparablen Schaden zufüge. Samsung darf also weiterhin seine Android-Geräte in den USA verkaufen, aber das Verfahren ist damit natürlich nicht beendet, und Apple kann nach wie vor als Sieger aus dem Patentstreit hervorgehen. Apple denied early ban on Samsung phones, tablets in US

Samsung clinched an important win late Friday after Northern District of California Judge Lucy Koh denied Apple's call for a preliminary ban on key Android devices. The San Jose court told Apple that the Droid Charge, Galaxy S 4G, Infuse 4G, and Galaxy Tab 10.1 would have to stay on sale unless Apple won at the full trial. Eight Android phones, including the Motorola Droid X and Samsung Epic 4G, were found to house major permission flaws according to a research team at North Carolina State University. Clothing and accessories discounter TJ Maxx may be planning a repeat of a publicity stunt from last year, where it sold iPads at a $100 discount in extremely limited quantities as a "door buster" type promotion. Apple's Motorola bond actually up to $16 billion

Several weeks after reports pointed out that Apple was calling for a $2.7 billion bond from Motorola in an ongoing patent dispute, fresh information suggests the figure was actually an annual estimate. Apple is said to have clarified the request at a hearing today, while Motorola's legal team put 2018 as a theoretical maximum for an extended battle in the court system, according to patent blogger Florian Mueller. If the court allows both estimates to be used as the basis for a bond, Motorola would have to secure approximately $16.2 billion.
