Welcome to the midseason break -- while many shows are either already on hiatus or getting ready for one, cable favorites like The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles are just getting restarted. Of course, given the season that's not all there is to watch with a slew of movie debuts and one-off events like the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and Grammy nominations taking place as well. Apple's retail tech can notice shoppers when they arrive
Ever wonder how Apple employees know you need help or are there to pick up an order? Apple employees now have a way to track you in the store. On Black Friday, New York Times reporter Brian X. Chen took a closer look at a customer tracking system Apple has been using "for a few weeks." It's an interesting look at how Apple is using its own technology to improve and expedite the retail shopping experience.
The system is powered by an internal application running on an employee's iPod touch. A customer walking into the store can use the Apple Store app to alert employees they have arrived to pick up their order. iOS devices could hit 280 million by end of 2012
Apple could hit as many as 280 million iOS devices by the end of 2012, depending on which metrics are called on for the projection, says Asymco's Horace Dediu. Just using market data predicting that smartphone and tablet sales will reach 6.2 billion within the next five years, Dediu remarks that an assumption of Apple growth from 17 percent in 2011 to 20 percent in 2016 would put the company at 225 million iOS units in 2012.

Caption Contest: KIRF Facebook shop clicks 'like' on fashion
Apple isn't the only one to get some shop-based imitation flattery -- now it looks like Facebook's got its first retail homage. Yep, this clothing store in Nablus, Palestine is unlikely to be a Zuckerberg-sanctioned outlet. Rolling Stone bends, preps iPad magazines
Rolling Stone's publisher Wenner Media has become one of the later big print magazine outlets to modernize and produce iPad magazine apps. Starting out modestly with a $10 app version of The Beatles: The Ultimate Album-by-Album Guide on December 1, Wenner plans versions of both Rolling Stone and of US Weekly for early 2012. The Beatles app will be enhanced with song samples and interviews, but the full magazines will be same-as-print editions adapted largely untouched.

News: iPhone 4 emits smoke, red glow aboard plane
An iPhone 4 has spontaneously overheated aboard a commercial flight. According to a press release from Australian airline Regional Express, a passenger on flight ZL319 from Lismore to Sidney had his/her personal iPhone 4 emit “a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow” sometime after landing. Insert Coin: Prototype peripherals incorporate no moving parts, multitouch functionality and freaking lasers

Smartphones still a minority at 27% worldwide
Market analyst company VisionMobile just released a report that shows smartphones account for just 27 percent worldwide. The numbers are measured by OS and the findings show that areas offering generous 3G coverage and post-paid plans are where smartphones are most common. Pre-paid markets are dominated by price-oriented phones, with Nokia's Symbian phones and RIM's BlackBerrys at the top.

Chronic Dev team releases C-Dev Reporter tool
As noted by RedmondPie the Chronic Dev Team, the people behind the GreenPois0n jailbreaking tool, have released a beta of a new tool which aims to circumvent iOS crash reports being sent to Apple and instead funnels them to the Chronic Dev Team. Google releases catalogs app for iPad (and Android)
Google has released a brand new mobile app that I don't think anyone saw coming. It's called Catalogs, and you can find it as a free download on the App Store right now (or on the Android market, if you happen to be into that sort of thing). Basically, the company appears to have used its Google Books technology to scan and set up links on a number of different holiday shopping catalogs, so you can load up the app, flip through the virtual pages to find something you want, and then click away to buy it directly from your mobile tablet.

Google offers its own brief history of search (video)
Wondering how we got from there to here? It's not the most exhaustive or objective history, but Google has released a new video today that it describes as the "evolution of search in six minutes." iCloud suffering from extended Mail outage [u]
(Updated with resumed service) The Mail component of iCloud has been suffering from an extended outage, Apple's system status page shows. "Users may be unable to access iCloud mail. Normal service will be restored ASAP," a message reads. The trouble has been ongoing, however, since at least 11:07 AM Pacific time.

iPhone catches fire onboard Australian jetliner
An iPhone recently caught fire onboard a Regional Express jet in Australia, a press release from the carrier reveals. The plane had just landed after a flight from Lismore to Sydney when the airline says that a passenger's iPhone began "emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow." A photo of the phone's back shows extensive damage, including a missing chunk and cracks throughout the glass.

Google I/O adds 3rd day, delayed to June in Apple clash
Google said this morning that it was delaying its high-profile I/O conference by two months in return for more time. Originally slated to start April 24 and last for two days, it's now due to start on June 27 and will have a third extra day. An "unexpected opportunity" let it move to the later but longer schedule, Google said.

Galaxy Note gets LTE turned on in South Korea, ready to cross the Pacific?
Many of us are smitten with Samsung's Galaxy Note, in no small part because of its stunning 5.3-inch Super AMOLED screen. Copying and pasting text is something everyone does. In OS X you have two choices by default -- copy and paste, which retains formatting; or paste and match style, which strips out the source formatting.

Policies let Rovio knockoff briefly scam Android Market
Google's strategy for Android Market may have come to bite it after a scam developer successfully made it to the store. Misleadingly named Rovio [now pulled] instead of the real Rovio Mobile Ltd., the developer published non-functional apps made to look like legitimate games. A large number of these were iPhone games that Rovio didn't make and which other developers so far had no intention of porting to Android, such as Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift and Tiny Wings.

On an airline that's actually serving the great country of Australia these days, an iPhone 4 decided enough was enough. Shortly after Regional Express flight ZL319 landed in Sydney from Lismore, "a passenger's mobile phone started emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow." RIM clearing out BlackBerry PlayBook with $99 staff sale

Rumor mill: next gen Xboxes + Kinect 2 to read lips, track fingers, make unicorns real

Founding Apple contract to go on auction at Sotheby's
A document used to formally establish Apple Computer will go up for auction at Sotheby's on December 13th, Bloomberg reports. The contract measures three pages, and dates back to April 1st 1976. More importantly perhaps it bears the signatures of co-founders Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Ronald Wayne. Apple's Black Friday sees iPhone sellouts, high iPad traffic
New analyst data may back up claims that Apple did extremely well on Black Friday. Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore says his firm checked with over 200 locations, divided between about 100 Apple Stores and 100 AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target outlets. Roughly 75 percent of Apple Stores were sold out of the iPhone 4S by the end of Friday, although by Saturday that number had dropped to 30 percent.

iPhone took 43% of UK share in October, outsold Android
The iPhone 4S helped Apple achieve a rare resurgence in British share that toppled Android, Kantar's Worldpanel ComTech found Monday. Apple's October share hit 42.8 percent of UK smartphone sales, knocking Android down to 35 percent. It managed a similar feat year-over-year, with iPhone share up 2.8 points for August through October to hit 27.8 percent, pushing Android down from 49.9 percent to 46 percent.

The 2011 Formula 1 racing season just wrapped up in Brazil, but Sky is already breaking down what it will bring to the series as it takes over UK coverage next year. Piper Jaffray reports on Apple's impressive Black Friday sales
As reported by Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Fortune's Apple 2.0 column, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene crunched his Black Friday sales numbers and found that Macs and iPads were popular gifts. Munster said Apple sold about 10.1 Macs per hour and 14.8 iPad per hour. This is a 23% increase in Mac sales and a 68% increase in iPad sales year over year.
Munster also counted the foot traffic and found that retail stores in this survey averaged about 544 people per hour. The Piper Jaffray analyst and his team collected these numbers by standing in a retail store and counting people and products as they left.

Online Apple Store offers free holiday shipping
Apple is currently offering free shipping at its online store, at least in some countries, checks show. At the US storefront, shoppers are now promised "free shipping on everything" until December 22nd. Architect and racecar designer Matthew Kim gets much respect for his messed-up PC builds and now he's had a go at the 9-inch-cubed small form factor. The DarwinMachine Type 339 is perhaps less wacky than the Hammerhead, but its chassis exploits the same premium combo of semi-translucent eco-resin and CNC aircraft aluminum and comes with Kim's usual life-time warranty. The internals are decent enough for home theatre or a spot of gaming: a Core i5-2400S alongside a Radeon HD 6570, 4GB, 40GB SSD and 1TB HDD, but ultimately that $1999.00 price tag is all about the (hopefully dimmable) aesthetics.

Siri momentan nicht zu nutzen
Wer momentan sein iPhone 4S über die Spracherkennung und Sprachsteuerung Siri nutzen möchte, erhält lediglich die Meldung "Leider kann ich gerade keine Anfragen beantworten". iPad 3: Retina-Displays kommen von Sharp
Für die Produktion des iPad 3 hat sich Apple scheinbar auch Sharp ins Boot geholt. Der japanische Elektronikkonzern soll für die Herstellung der Displays beauftragt sein. Erwartet wird ein dünneres Tablet mit schärferem Display und verbesserte Akkuleistung.
Das iPad 3 wird für das erste Quartal 2012 erwartet und Apple will langsam die Massenproduktion starten. Wie das Wall Street Journal berichtet, wurde die ohnehin schon breite Basis der Zulieferer um Hersteller Sharp erweitert, die das zu erwartende Retina-Display für das iPad 3 fertigen sollen. Dieses soll eine Auflösung von 1536 x 2048 Pixel bieten, womit die Suche nach einzelnen Pixel-Punkten auf dem iPad-Display schon bald der Vergangenheit angehören würde.

While the iPad was down from 77.8 percent in the spring, much of that gain from rivals was attributed to the rush on the clearance HP TouchPad, which wouldn't be a factor in the fall.
