Leak echoes talk of Sharp plant making iPad 3 LCDs
Repeated talk of Sharp making iPad 3 LCDs was backed up by leaks on Friday. The tip to the Wall Street Journal supported talk that Sharp's repurposed TV plant in Kameyama was switching over at least partly to handle Apple's demands. Possibly confirming Apple's mysterious major investment, they said that Apple itself had paid to help get the manufacturing started.

RIM, Telefonica announce NFC trial, aim to launch mobile wallet next year
RIM's NFC campaign is about to roll into Iberia, now that the BlackBerry manufacturer has announced a new partnership with Madrid-based Telefonica. This week, the two companies unveiled plans to begin testing a mobile payment and ID card system across the Spanish capital, in the hopes of launching commercial services next year. The so-called Telefonica Wallet for BlackBerry trial will involve some 350 Telefonica employees and a select group of testers within Madrid, each of whom will be able to make payments, access offices and check bank statement

AT&T may sue FCC if it can't withdraw T-Mobile merger
AT&T general counsel Wayne Watts warned the FCC that the carrier might sue if it wasn't allowed to withdraw its T-Mobile merger application. Reacting to the FCC saying only that it would "consider" allowing the withdrawal, Watts argued that the FCC "has no right to stop us" and that it would be an "abuse of procedure" if the FCC didn't allow it. The company would take any dispute to court, he said.

IPCom to enforce injunction against HTC, ban sales of its 3G devices in Germany
HTC's had a rough go of it in the legal arena this year, and the company just got hit with another judicial setback in Germany. Patent holding firm (read: patent troll) IPCom was granted an injunction in 2009 against HTC based upon HTC's devices alleged infringement of an IPCom patent on UMTS 3G technology. HTC appealed that injunction in 2009 to suspend its enforcement, and today the German court upheld the previous decision. With the injunction back in full effect, IPCom plans to seek sanctions against the Taiwanese firm and ban the sale of its devices in Deutcheland. So, that means HTC will have to pony up the cash to

NPD: holiday worst since 2008 due to phones, bad iPad rivals
Holiday sales may be the worst since 2008 through a combination of the economy and technology, NPD Group VP Stephen Baker said Friday. Along with anxiousness over the economy, categories that were once key to sales, such as dedicated cameras, GPS units, and MP3 players were all expected to face "significant" declines. Although not directly stated, all of the categories were those covered by smartphones, reducing the need to buy separate devices.

Yes, Motorola's latest slinky slim smartphone has just cleared the FCC, but before you get too excited, nothing about it has changed. Netbooks take next blow as Cedar Trail said delayed to 2012
Netbooks may have seen one of their chances at keeping competition afloat after a possible scoop on Thursday had Intel once more delaying its next Atom processors. An original November ship target for the future Cedar Trail platform was now understood by VR-Zone to have been moved back to the end of December. With companies reportedly not allowed to ship until mid-January, likely in sync with the CES expo, they would be forced to miss the holidays.

South Korea plans trial run of robot prison guards
This isn't the first time we've seen a prison turn to robots for a little assistance, but South Korea looks to be going a bit further than most with its latest robotic endeavor. The country's Ministry of Justice has announced that it will be conducting a one-month trial run of robot guards at a prison in the city of Pohang starting in March -- a project that's expected to cost one billion won (or about $863,000). HTC drops appeal against 3G ban in Germany
HTC faced another setback Friday after it decided to drop an appeal against a ban on its 3G devices in Germany. The company made the surprise reversal after it decided that it wasn't likely to win against IPCom, which claims all of HTC's 3G hardware violates its patents. IPCom claimed that it would have "no choice" but to ban HTC's hardware before the end of the year, as HTC had "never" had any cash offer that could be enough to cover the patents.

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Korean launch slower than Apple's
Samsung's Galaxy S II LTE launch in Korea may have been slower than Apple's, according to unofficial details on Friday. In one month of sales, the bigger, 4G version of the flagship was said by a Yonhap source to have sold 300,000 phones. While fast, it would necessarily have compared well to the iPhone 4S, whose 200,000-plus pre-orders would have reached that amount within days.

Best Buy runs out of online iPad 2 stock
US retailer Best Buy has completely exhausted its online stock of the iPad 2, a check shows. All models are now listed as "sold out online," including even top-end 64GB 3G tablets. Stock was available as recently as earlier today.

Earlier this year, IK Multimedia introduced the iRig Mic and VocaLive app for the iPhone. Our very own Steve Sande did a review of the iRig Mic, which you can check out here. Email-based attack exploits Black Friday Apple shoppers
An email scam is exploiting Black Friday shoppers interested in picking up iTunes gift cards, says German site Eleven Security. The message uses the subject line "iTunes Gift Certificate," and has has an attached file listed as "Gift_Certificate_iT9581.zip". A simple body of text promises that the attachment contains a "certificate code" which can be redeemed for $50 in credit toward "video, music, games" at the iTunes Store.

Intel seen planning Thunderbolt dock standard for ultrabooks
Intel is hoping to formalize a standard for docking on ultrabooks with Thunderbolt ports, leaked internal notes demonstrate. The implementation would combine the Thunderbolt port with a wider companion dock connector to handle other forms of data, such as Ethernet or USB, VR-Zone said. To keep the Ethernet connection alive for Intel's vPro remote management or for Windows 8's Connected Standby mode, however, the docking port would need to have direct access to the Ethernet chipset inside.

Researchers put smartphones on a power diet, drastically improve battery life

A newly-published Apple patent application suggests several potential interface changes to iOS. The greatest of these is the "persistent overlay," to which users could add things like photos, music from iTunes, and links to web content. Patently Apple suggests that some descriptions appear to associate the overlay with the multitasking feature in iOS 4 and 5. The launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9790 in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta on Friday gave RIM a rare Apple-like level of demand that also took an unfortunate turn. Intel Romley platform for Xeon may be delayed due to SAS
Intel may have moved its Xeon E5 launch for the mainstream due to issues with SAS drives, tipsters claimed Friday. The Romley chipset when combined with current, Sandy Bridge-based processors was said by Digitimes to have problems when using the high speed serial disks. Südkorea bekommt Roboter als Gefängnisaufseher

Na endlich. In Süd-Korea werden ab nächstem Jahr in ausgesuchten Gefängnissen erste Roboter patrouillieren. Vor allem Nachts sollen sie durch die Gänge summen und dabei überprüfen ob mal wieder wer einen Selbstmordversuch oder sonstige physische Attacken erleben musste. Menschen sollen deshalb nicht entlassen werden, sondern sie sollen sich dort um eher sozialen Aufgaben widmen. Die Roboter sind übrigens obendrein Telepräsenz-fähig, d.h. man kann sie als Insasse auch anblaffen, und dann antwortet ein echter Aufseher.

A Samsung message reportedly going out to business partners has the company quitting the netbook business. In what we can only assume is part of their community service, after running amok and devouring all that medicine, robots are now visiting our old people in hospitals, leading them in sing-alongs and helping them battle Alzheimer's -- instead of terrorizing them. SiriProxy hack lets iPhone 4S control third-party app
The developers of FastPdfFit Reader have been able to use Plamoniís SiriProxy to enable Siri voice control on their third-party app. As the video embedded below demonstrates, a user is able to use voice commands, that Siri interprets and executes, to navigate the app with voice, instead of with touch.

Mit einem Zoom von 24mm bis 624mm (bedeutet hier 26-fach Zoom) und einem Makro bis zu einem Zentimeter ist man zumindest in dieser Hinsicht ohne Wechselobjektiv ziemlich flexibel. Der Sensor ist ein EXR CMOS, was natürlich einer DSLR keine Konkurrenz macht, aber das wäre wohl auch nicht wirklich zu erwarten. Is Samsung giving up on netbooks next year?
An email sent by Samsung to its trading partners appears to shut down any prospect of the manufacturer producing new netbooks after the first quarter of 2012. The email is quoted by French site Blogeee and says that Samsung will switch its focus to 11.6- and 12-inch ultraportables as well as Intel Ultrabooks. Neue Xeon-Prozessoren verzögern sich wegen Chipsatz-Problem

Nicht wenige unter euch, die auf Microsoft 8 als Betriebsystem schielen, werden sich freuen, dass die Beta von Microsoft Office mit Metro-style schon am 15 Januar in die Beta gehen soll. Damit dürfte Office dann auch etwas touchfreundlicher werden. Die Übersichts-Tile-Oberfläche von Moorea (s.o.) wirkt auf uns allerdings noch etwas pastellig unausgegoren. Ob es allerdings wirklich eine ARM-Version geben wird (Metro Apps von Windows Phone laufen ja nur da und auf Tablets ist vermutlich auch meistens ein ARM-Prozessor zu erwarten) ist noch nicht klar.

Brazil-made Apple iPhone 4 slips out early
A sighting late Thursday showed what should be the production for Apple from Foxconn's Brazilian factory. A white 8GB iPhone 4 at MacMagazine is identical to the China-produced model with the exception of "Industria Brasiliera" (Brazilian Industry) on the back as well as approval from ANATEL, the country's telecom regulator. While at first appearing to be a mockup, the running device shows an MD198BR model, hinting through the suffix that it's localized.

iPhone owners still more loyal than on Android, BlackBerry
iPhone users are still very likely to remain loyal to the platform even with stepped up competition, GfK determined in a new study. Scanning the US, Brazil, China, Japan, and the largest five countries in Europe, it found that 84 percent of those who'd bought into Apple's ecosystem planned to buy another iPhone with their next upgrade. Only 60 percent of Android users anticipated the same, suggesting that a small but significant number would jump ship.

SiriProxy enables voice control of third-party apps (video)
If you'll rewind your mind in time to earlier this week, you might remember a clever proxy server from @plamoni that enabled Siri's control of a thermostat through spoken commands. Panasonic renews hopes of Android smartphones in US, Europe
Panasonic's rejuvenated plans for an international smartphone launch were revived after a potential scoop from Japan's Nikkei [sub. required]. Court holds European ISPs can't be forced to filter traffic, users free to fly the jolly roger
It's been a sliver under a month since UK ISP British Telecom was ordered to cut all ties to filesharing site Newzbin 2. Now, a European court decision deals a counter blow to media owners by denying their demands to hustle ISPs into tracking freeloading downloaders. Amazon drops new 11-inch MacBook Air to $850
Amazon has joined in a rare price race on Macs by dropping the price on the 11-inch MacBook Air. A brand-new, 1.6GHz Core i5 version of the ultraportable has dropped to $850, a full $150 less than its retail price. The discount is steeper than what's expected from Apple, which may stop at $898.
