Spotify hits 2.5 million paid subscribers thanks to US
Spotify trumpeted on Wednesday that it had reached 2.5 million paid subscribers. The figure includes both those paying for the basic web access, either $5 or five euros, as well as Premium members on the $10 or ten-euro plan. Although it didn't mention free users, recent checks have about four million new free accounts since getting the deeper Facebook tie-in.

Iridium brings AxcessPoint satellite app to iOS devices
Iridium Communications has taken its promised AxcessPoint Mail & Web app (free, App Store) to Apple's iOS platform. As before, users still need to buy one of Iridium's satellite phones and share its data connection over an AxcessPoint Wi-Fi hotspot with an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. The service is time-based, rather than bandwidth, and costs about $1 per minute.

Grand Central store opening narrowed to Dec. 9-10, says Post
Apple will officially unveil its Grand Central Terminal store on December 9th, the New York Post claims to have learned. Apple and railroad officials are said to be preparing a "splashy media event" for the premiere. The latter party is "making plans for a lot of press and accommodating Appleís own people," a source says, while the Post elaborates that officials are preparing for swarms of Apple fans that will only compound problems caused by the terminal's normal high traffic.

Kindle Fire vs iPad: How to decide
If there's any real comparison to be made between Apples and orange, it's the iPad and Kindle Fire use cases. After having spent a couple of weeks with Kindle, there's much to be said for the device. Spotify hits 2.5 million paying subscribers, Yacht Rock playlists reach an all-time high
It may not yet take into account users from certain countries that may be adjacent to certain other countries, but Spotify announced today that it now counts 2.5 million paying subscribers for its music service. Of course, that's just a part of the total number of registered users (paying or otherwise), which now stands at around 10 million according to the most recent information from the company. What's next for the service? Spotify is promising to tell us that next week.

TiVo Q4 results bring first sub growth in years, DirecTiVo is imminent

USPTO museum hosts special Steve Jobs exhibit
The US Patent and Trademark Office last week launched a special Steve Jobs exhibit at its museum, located in Alexandria, Virginia. The display involves 30 iPhone-shaped panels, which -- with the exception for a description of the exhibit and some photos -- predominantly feature the front pages of patents and trademarks bearing Jobs' name. Throughout his life, Jobs was credited as an inventor or co-inventor on over 300 such documents. As Apple CEO he was famous for micromanaging the details of many products, explaining his USPTO footprint.

Personal Audio strikes again, has the Kindle Fire in its patent trolling sights
'Tis the season for reflecting upon our many gifts in life and giving thanks for them. If you're Personal Audio, however, once you've thanked your lucky stars that you own a patent on musical playlists, you then file an infringement suit against Amazon. That's right folks, Personal Audio is up to its old tricks again in the Eastern District of Texas, but instead of alleging iPods are infringing its IP, the Kindle Fire is squarely in the company's sites. Microsoft research chief tries to downplay loss to Siri
Microsoft's chief research officer Craig Mundie in an interview (video below) made the unusual attempt to claim that Microsoft had beaten Apple to market with an equivalent to Siri. He argued to Forbes that Windows Phone 7's voice command system from was somehow similar to Apple's but had arrived a year earlier. To him, Apple was just pitching the iPhone 4S technology as revolutionary because it had the feature, not because of any technical differences.

News: FCC chairman aims to block AT&T/T-Mobile merger
Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has moved to block the proposed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile. Microsoft signs NDA with Yahoo, gets back into takeover game
Microsoft has signed a non-disclosure agreement with Yahoo that signals it's considering buying the search engine outright again, a source slipped out on Wednesday. The pact outlined by the New York Times would let it examine Yahoo's financials to see if a buyout would make sense. As Yahoo's conditions in the NDA would prevent collaborating on deals, it's possible Microsoft would go it alone on a takeover or wait until later to arrange financing.

AMD wechselt bei Notebook-Prozessoren angeblich zu TSMC

Apple television predicted to show in mid-2012
Apple is forecast to begin commercial production of a TV set in February, at a Sharp plant in Japan, according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek. Derzeit sorgt ein provozierender Werbespot von Samsung für Aufregung, den wir hier bereits erwähnten. Ein genauerer Blick lohnt sich dennoch, da der Hersteller des Galaxy S2 sich nämlich nicht nur darauf beschränkt die Vorzüge seines Samrtphones zu propagieren, sondern auch Apples Kunden verunglimpft. Ob das der richtige Weg zu hohen Verkaufszahlen ist, bleibt zweifelhaft .

HTC cuts forecast 23%, expects sales to shrink
HTC acted as a possible bellwether for Android on Wednesday after it cut its outlook further beyond earlier predictions. A leaked pamphlet shows the some of discounts Apple is planning to offer for this year's Black Friday sale, according to 9to5Mac. In terms of computers, the company is taking $101 off the iMac, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. iPad 2 discounts range from $41 to $61, depending on storage capacity, and a similar philosophy applies to the iPod touch, which is between $21 and $41 off. HTC plans to "reevaluate" its buyout out S3 Graphics now that S3 has lost its ITC case against Apple, the smartphone designer said in a statement Wednesday. This one kind of came out of left field -- there isn't really any reason for Chillingo to release a Superman game, especially one created by Flash developer Tiger Games. Superman games in general don't usually work well anyway: How exactly do you put a challenge on pretending to be the Man of Steel himself? But this one works because it stays simple -- you control the big blue boy scout running around Metropolis, and perform various tasks, like stopping robbers, killing big robots, or smashing asteroids or missles as they threaten the city.

China now largest smartphone market, Nokia still in front
China has overtaken the US to become the world's most important smartphone market, Strategy Analytics said Wednesday. Where US shipments actually shrank 7.5 percent from spring to summer to fall back to 23.3 million smartphones, the Chinese market grew 57.5 percent just the one season to hit 23.9 million. Nokia, despite its rapid decline, was still the leader in China with 6.8 million Symbian phones, or 28.5 percent, beating Samsung's 4.2 million and 17.6 million.

Foxconn to build cloud computing centers in Taiwan
Foxconn Group, best known for their assembly and manufacturing factories in China, is planning two new buildings on a site of 1.85 hectares (4.57 acres) in Taiwan that will see the company expand into cloud computing and software development, either for itself or on behalf of its clients, DigiTimes reports. Apple allows subscription-based iPad gaming for the first time
Bloomberg reports that Apple has allowed Big Fish Games to begin offering its games in a subscription-based model. For US$6.99 per month, iPad users will have access to Big Fish Games' entire library of iPad games.
Subscription models have already been introduced for newspapers and magazines sold in the App Store, and Netflix is a prime example of how the subscription model can succeed for movies. According to Big Fish, it took some extra arm-twisting to convince Apple to allow the subscription model for Big Fish's games.

Doom 3 game engine released under GPL3
Game maker Id Software has published the Doom 3 game engine source code under the GPL3 license, allowing developers to incorporate its mechanics into their own projects. The release does not contain any game data, according to the release notes, as those elements are still covered under the Doom 3 commercial end-user license agreement. In addition, the shadow-rendering technique known as "Carmack's Reverse" has been substituted for patent reasons.

Today at Apple's online store save on these five refurb. Macs for less than $1000. First on the list is the Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server, a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives, now $749 after a $150 price break. For $100 more is the refurb. Mac mini with Lion Server, a 2.0GHz Intel quad-core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives, now $849.

Arduino geek develops Cold War Angst, starts spying on satellites (video)
Start with some Arduino and Gameduino hardware, add a splash of PLAN-13 satellite tracking software from 1983, and finish with a healthy dose of libertarianism. The result? A neat little hack called Angst, designed and built by Mark VandeWettering (aka Brainwagon). It can store details of up to 750 satellites on 128KB of EEPROM memory and display their predicted orbits in all the glory of SVGA display. Don't get lazy though -- the most reliable way to track those pesky snoops in the sky is still to don your anorak, step outdoors and snoop right back.

Windows Phone app market burgeoning, 39X smaller than iPhone
The Windows Phone Marketplace has grown quickly in its first year, but is still well behind its peers, Distimo said in a look back on Tuesday. Although it was at about 35,000 apps as of October (40,000 in November), its actual download traffic tops just 131,000 apps a day in the top 300 apps. Apple sees over 5.1 million each day, or about 39 times more.

Lyneborg bot carves models of magnetic fields, dares the future to have a look (video)
If you're going to create a robot that carves something, have it carve models of an invisible field. This is what Frits Lyneborg, creator of the Yellow Drum Machine, has done with a new homemade bot that uses a combination of motors, pulleys, small drills, makerbeams and magnetic sensors. Samsung Galaxy S II TV ad jabs iPhone 4S queues
Samsung launched a direct challenge to Apple in a TV spot Tuesday for the Galaxy S II. The minute-long ad makes fun of those who have lined up for hours for the iPhone 4S and shows them eager to wait for Apple until they see a Galaxy S II, at which point they're purportedly entranced by the "huge" screen and 4G data. The ad also takes risks and openly insults some of those in line, playing on stereotypes of Apple fans as hipsters and being worried that the 4S doesn't look different on the outside.

I am still debating about updating to an iphone 4s from an iphone 4. As someone overwhelmed at work (corporate life). I was wondering if there has been feedback on how someone has been using the iphone 4s' Siri function on a day to day basis at work to help stay organized? I know Siri can be used to check meetings by checking calendars. But how has reminders been effective in your work life? Can it sync with other systems to create to do lists? Sorkin 'strongly considering' writing Steve Jobs movie
Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who deeply profiled Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 film The Social Network is "strongly considering" writing a screenplay based on Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs for a future Sony-produced film, he told E online at an event in Santa Monica. Sony acquired the rights to the biography last month and were rumored to have picked Sorkin as the company's top choice to pen the film.

NPD: Outside of the iPad, TouchPad's fire sales make it number one
Analysis firm NPD has released one last report on tablet computers before the holiday season officially kicks off, and something crazy is happening to that market. Outside of the iPad (which of course is currently dominating the space), the next big contender goes to the HP TouchPad, a device which has already been discontinued. Despite simply selling off its stock of tablets at discounted prices, HP has earned itself a 17% share in the market, enough to top the next manufacturer on the list, Samsung. That's kind of crazy, and it shows you just how quickly and powerfully Apple has leaped ahead in this market.
