LaCie startet Verkauf der ersten Thunderbolt-Festplatten
Sieben Monate nach der ersten Ankündigung hat LaCie nun die ersten externen Festplatten mit Thunderbolt-Schnittstelle in den Handel gebracht. Die Modelle der Little-Big-Disk-Reihe setzen ausschließlich auf die von Intel entwickelte Schnittstelle und eignen sich somit derzeit nur für den Einsatz an aktuellen Apple-Systemen.

Comcast AnyPlay to bring live TV to iPad and other tablets
Comcast's long-referenced plans for live iPad TV are getting close, a leaked guide showed Friday afternoon. The option, now christened AnyPlay, will stream live TV over an iPad or certain other tablets as long as they're on Wi-Fi in the home, MacRumors saw. Viewers will need a special Motorola set-top box to watch, though, and will be limited to one tablet at a time for a maximum of ten registered tablets.

Amazon wins appeal in one-click buying lawsuit
The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington today sided with e-tailer Amazon in an ongoing dispute with software developer Cordance over the use of one-click purchasing. The court overruled a decision by a trial judge who in turn had reversed a decision by a federal jury in a case over which the judge was presiding. The jury had found that, while Amazon might have infringed upon some components of Cordance's patent, the company's claims were invalid.

Samsung accuses Apple of 'free riding' its patent technologies
Samsung's head of global marketing has spoken with the AP recently, and says that he believes Apple is "free-riding" on the company's patents, building phones and touch devices that apparently are unduly influenced by Samsung's inventions. No more Mr. Nice Guy, though -- Lee Younghee, also a senior vice president at Samsung, says they won't let Apple get away with it any more, and will more aggressively pursue Samsung's patent interests in the future.

Google Chrome 15 Beta now out with new tab page, more
The Google Chrome 15 Beta browser is now out for download and gets a redesigned new tab page and a newfound ability to synchronize the address/search bar history in multiple installations. The new tab page requires users navigate between apps, commonly visited sites, and recently closed windows rather than on a single page, as before. Bookmarks let users access favorites, and apps can now be arranged into customizable sections like work and productivity simply by dragging and dropping.

F-Secure reports Mac trojan poses as PDF
Security firm F-Secure has unearthed a troubling trojan for Macs that hides itself as a PDF, only waiting until the file is opened up and displaying some Chinese characters before it dives into your Mac's hard drive and sets up a backdoor control. Currently, according to F-Secure, the backdoor doesn't actually do anything harmful, but obviously that could change in the future, either if the original hackers take advantage of the trojan, or if someone else does.
F-Secure says that the trojan currently doesn't have an icon associated with it, so in the current spotted form, it should be pretty easy to identify as a virus (especially if it shows up in just a random email). But if the trojan is emb

Storage enthusiasts (yeah, there is such a thing -- what of it?) would probably tell you that PCIe-based SSDs are a dime a dozen these days. US government to beat back botnets with a cybersecurity code of conduct
Old Uncle Sam seems determined to crack down on botnets, but he still needs a little help figuring out how to do so. On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published a request for information, inviting companies from internet and IT companies to contribute their ideas to a voluntary "code of conduct" for ISPs to follow when facing a botnet infestation. CrashPlan debuts first apps for iOS, Android
Online backup service CrashPlan, run by Code 42, has released its first apps for iOS and Android devices. The titles let users browse, download and view compatible files stored in CrashPlan accounts, and share them with others using emailed links. The iOS apps include a viewer compatible with a selection of formats such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPEG, TIFF and MP3. On Android, any file can be opened so long as a compatible third-party app is present.

Huge crowds attend Shanghai Apple Store grand opening
As expected, China's newest Apple store opened today in Shanghai. The store's 300 employees were greeted by a crowd of over 500 people on hand for the grand opening. Located on the busy Nanjing road, the store is China's fifth Apple store and its largest. It occupies five stories of retail space and has an expected foot traffic of 40,000 customers each day.
The opening of this store is part of Apple's long-term strategy to increase its presence

350Green to install 400 EV charging stations across the US
EV charging stations are still hard to come by here in the US and, while 400 new ones won't exactly blanket the nation, we'll take what we can get. 350Green is teaming up with Coulomb Technologies to build exactly that many new ChargePoint stations across New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana and California. With the latest announcement the ChargePoint Network is expected to grow to over 1,000 locations, many with fast charging capabilities. We wouldn't exactly call the plan a game changer but, like we said, every little bit helps. Check out the PR after the break.

Blockbuster Movie Pass comes October 1 with TV, streaming
Dish Network made a bet on Internet video Friday with Blockbuster Movie Pass. The service bundles satellite TV with mailed movie, TV, and game rentals as well as Internet streaming. Pitched as a rival to Netflix and Qwikster, it takes advantage of the Blockbuster rights and TV streaming to give a wider catalog of Internet video; 10,000 movies in total will stream to TVs and computers, including from Starz and others who have held out on Netflix to shelter their TV business.

FCC net neutrality rules live November 20, lawsuits coming?
The net neutrality rules introduced by the FCC last year are going to take effect on November 20, the agency confirmed. It's expected the rules will result in multiple legal and congressional arguments. The rules don't allow broadband providers to block legal content and also require that they be honest about network management techniques like throttling.

Support for quad-core ARM CPU shows up in Apple's Xcode
The default compiler in Apple's Xcode developer tools is the LLVM-based Clang. Ars Technica reports that they received a heads-up from a developer who works on low-level ARM assembly coding that the latest version of Clang in Xcode adds support for a quad-core, ARM-based processor from Marvell -- the Armada XP.
Ars confirmed that the source code for portions of Clang includes definitions (highlighted in the source code listing shown above) for an architecture type of "armv7k" and a CPU type of "pj4b." According to Ars, PJ4

Is Otterbox promising support for new two iPhone models? No.
Seen that banner ad (above) on the Otterbox website today? It's certainly creating quite the buzz. Is Otterbox promising the debut of two new iPhone models? It turns out that no, they're not.
We gave Kelly Richardson of Otterbox a call today and she clarified the matter. "We're not even quite sure ourselves," she told TUAW, talking about whether there would be one model or two.

Mac Trojan may funnel files, screenshots to distant servers
A newly-detailed Trojan attack is being directed at Macs, say security firms F-Secure and Sophos. Originally spotted in late July, the Trojan relies on two pieces of malware. The first is a downloader identified as "Trojan-Dropper:OSX/Revir.A," which not only retrieves the second piece of software but repeatedly opens a Chinese PDF document -- trojan.pdf -- said to contain offensive political statements. The real purpose of the document is thought to be distracting a person while the second app is downloaded.

Dish Network, Blockbuster unveil Blockbuster Movie Pass all-inclusive entertainment service
At its "a stream come true" event today, Dish Network finally revealed its plans for a subscription video service called Blockbuster Movie Pass. Verizon expects Windows Phone to win out over BlackBerry
Verizon head Lowell McAdam's turn at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference saw him make the unusual claim that Windows Phone would pass the BlackBerry. Echoing AT&T's call for a third major smartphone platform, he didn't see RIM as being the one to fill that role. The larger struggle would shake itself out in about a year, and RIM's current position wouldn't guarantee that it would be third after the battle.

Developers bemoan trouble with in-app purchases
Twitter was buzzing this morning about a problem with Apple's in-app purchasing system. According to the comments, Apple's receipt verification system is down and developers are losing potential sales. An unconfirmed report from Engadget suggests, Apple may be trying to purge the system of fake receipts. Regardless of the reason, let's hope Apple can get things squared away soon. Customers want to make their purchases and developers want to make their money.

References to quad-core ARM CPU appear in Xcode compiler
The most recent source code for Clang -- the default compiler in Xcode -- now shows support for a quad-core Marvell processor, the ARM-based Armada XP, according to Ars Technica. The chip is notably built for low-powered cloud computing tasks. Apple has joined the Digital Due Process group, a coalition of privacy organizations like the EFF and companies that are lobbying to reform surveillance laws in the US. The group hopes to modernize the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) which was enacted in 1986, long before the Internet became a household name. While I await a reply back on Twitter from Apple's @AppStore account, I was hoping you could help me out, given your past as a ninja and Olympian.
As I try and gift purchases of awesome apps from the App Store to friends, followers and family, I hit an issue: apps I've already downloaded for myself do not show their prices. Instead, the word "Downloaded" appears where the price should be.
How can I see the prices of apps I have already purchased so I can gift them to people and not have the price be a game of Russian Roulette?

iTunes in-app purchasing system breaking, complaints say
In-app purchases handled through iTunes have been been breaking for about the last half-day, according to a number of complaints. Error messages make reference to Apple's "verifyReceipt" system, and some speculation holds that the issue involves fake receipts entering the system. One developer suggests that the problem has been "losing lots of sales" for apps that need receipt verification, and is "threatening to more-or-less take down the entire IAP [in-app purchase] ecosystem."

I love my 3GS.
I still use it on a daily basis as one of my primary dev units. It has a lovely PayGo SIM in it, with inexpensive data. It's an absolutely brilliant device and my love for my iPhone 4 does not diminish the 3GS's utility.
I never bothered to purchase an iPhone 3G. Although I used several on contracts, it never passed the barrier of "worth buying." From several years distance, I'm even more sure that I made the right choice. (And yes, I know there are many of you out there who adore your 3G units. I'm not trying to take away from that.)

New Shanghai Apple Store boasts 500 visitors on opening day

Irgendwann werden sie dann auch schmerzhaft feststellen, dass so ein WiFi nicht überall hin reicht, und dann die Kiste schnell mal unüberwacht von einem Neugierigen gehijackt werden kann. RIM's promises of cutting BlackBerry PlayBook prices to clear the slow-selling tablet have borne out as Canadian stores have started slashing prices. According to a Bloomberg report, well-known motherboard and chipset manufacturer Via has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple. Filed in Delaware Federal court, the complaint accuses Apple of infringing three US patents that cover microprocessor technology used in smartphones and tablets. Millennial: Android down to 54% ad share when all iOS counts
New Millennial Media data has shown that Android's actual share of mobile ad traffic is considerably lower when considering every iOS device. While it had 61 percent among phones in July, Android dropped to 54 percent this past August when both sides could count non-phone devices, such as the iPad, iPod touch, and Android tablets. Apple gained a third more ad share and jumped back to 28 percent as a consequence.

Wir haben oft genug neue Apple Patente, aber dieses Microsoft Patent für Windows Phones bringt wirklich mal eine gute Idee. Ein Sliderphone mit variablen Einsätzen. Damit könnte man z.B. die Tastatur gegen ein Gamepad oder eine Batterie, eine Fernbedienung oder z.B. einen zweiten Bildschirm austauschen. Je nachdem was man gerade mit seinem Handy vorhat. Im Grunde sind Baby-Monitore ja dafür da einem z.B. einen Stock tiefer anzukündigen, dass es Zeit ist sich mal wieder um das Kleine zu kümmern. Warum jemand (Evoz) eine App mit einem WiFi Baby-Monitor im Bundle verkaufen will, der letztendlich nichts weiter ist als ein Webcam ohne Kamera ist uns etwas rätselhaft? Natürlich schickt es Notifications bei Lautstärke und lässt einen Zuhören via App, uns scheint die Idee, dass man dann aber vermutlich zu weit weg ist um überhaupt reagieren zu können, der Kurzschluss in der Rechnung. Windows 8 secure boot spurs OS lock fears, Microsoft answers
Microsoft's Tony Mangefeste in a response to early adopters tried to calm down fears that Windows 8 might be used to shut out Linux or competing operating systems. After Red Hat engineer Matt Garrett worried that the UEFI firmware's secure boot feature could be used to exclude non-official operating systems, Sinofsky stepped in to clarify that it was part of the spec and not Microsoft's policy. Apple's shipments of the iPhone 5 might have been slowed down by a defect surfacing in some touchscreens, a rumor maintained late Thursday. Apple and Dropbox took rare political stances Thursday by joining Digital Due Process. The coalition, which includes technology firms like Comcast and eBay as well as the American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Frontier Foundation, is primarily interested in toughening laws barring law enforcement from snooping on computers and mobile devices without a warrant. Going with an HTML5-based web app rather than using Apple's App Store has paid off for the London-based Financial Times, which says it now has more than 700,000 subscribers through its own portal, making it more popular than the native apps that were offered until the end of the August, when Apple and the FT parted ways, largely over the former's refusal to divulge subscriber data. The figure represents a gain of roughly 95,000 users over the last year.

Spotify opens up to all in the US with free, unlimited music streaming for six months
It's only been a couple of months since Spotify kicked off its invite-only beta here in the US, but along with announcing new Facebook tie-ins it's finally ready to let the masses into the party. Sterne Agee's Wu: HTML5 adoption helps web, not Apple
Sterne Agee technology analyst Shaw Wu, relying in part on his own experience as a programmer prior to becoming an equity researcher, commented in a note to investors on the value of HTML5 and if Apple's promotion of the standard will pay off for the company. He has also reiterated his "Buy" rating on Apple and maintained a target price of $500 per share. Wu believes that despite Apple's push for HTML5, its adoption will not have much direct impact on AAPL stock.

KDDI may get iPhone 5, putting an end to Softbank's exclusivity in Japan
The walls of tyrannical exclusivity may soon come crashing down in Japan. According to Nikkei, "officials" in the know have indicated that KDDI is gearing up to release the iPhone 5 on its network, thus ending competitor SoftBank's reign as the iconic device's sole provider in the Land of the Rising Sun. Spotify to go invite-free in US, still get six months free
Spotify in the wake of its Facebook Open Graph support said it was phasing out the invitation-only system for the US version. Listeners will have the option of signing up on their own, like their European counterparts. The company's community lead Andres Sehr explained in a brief TechCrunch chat that members would need to sign in through Facebook to get the free access without an invite.

Inmoo apps stream indie movies free to iPhone, iPad
Inmoo.com, which has been streaming independent movies and short films on its website since last year, has announced two iOS apps -- Inmoo Free for the iPod Touch and iPhone, and Inmoo HD for the iPad. Both apps, which are free but ad-supported, offer a choice of nine new independent films per week from Inmoo's growing content library. A paid version of the apps (Inmoo Plus) offers access to the entire library, advanced search and filtering as well as a forum.

Oracle: Android just an 'incompatible clone of Java'
Oracle in documents posted Thursday claimed that its real issue in its dispute over copyrights and patents in Android wasn't its damage requests but to stop Android itself. It argued that Android's just-in-time engine was an "incompatible clone of Java" and that the real issue was Google's damage to the code, which was supposed to be truly cross-platform. Any royalties for future damages would have to come after the case, Oracle said in a copy of the document obtained by Florian Mueller.

Mac 101: Reclaiming space by cleaning out the Downloads folder
To new Mac users, the Downloads folder is quite confusing and even "invisible." As a Mac consultant, you wouldn't believe the number of times I've found multiple copies of downloads, updaters, and pictures in the Downloads folder -- all taking up valuable room on your disk.
Reader Joe Delk brought this to my attention recently and thought it would make a great Mac 101 post. Joe said "My harddrive has filled up recently and even after deleting most of the movies, iTunes or otherwise, it was still a struggle finding enough space for new movies and new programs. AMD FX-CPUs: Neuer Termin und günstigere Preise?

Google TV apps for TNT, TBS leak out briefly, reveal authenticated streaming on the way

Daily Mac App: Color Splash Studio
It's been interesting to see how many new non-Photoshop image applications have been coming out for the Mac. While Photoshop can apply just about any effect to an image, I'm seeing an increasing number of specialized, low cost apps that do one or two things exceedingly well and don't require a mega-investment in Photoshop.
A case in point is Color Splash Studio. The app allows you to take a color image, turn it to grayscale, and then brush selected color back in. This isn't an effect you would use on every image, but it has its place and can look pretty amazing if the subject matter supports it.

Cricket takes a great leap forward, expands footprint with a little help from retail friends
After inking a wholesale spectrum agreement with Sprint last year, Leap's going for broke and rolling its "value-driven" Cricket service out nationwide on September 25th.
