HP still considering spinning off PCs, ending webOS gear
HP is still considering spinning out or selling its PC business after the forced exit of Leo Apotheker, new CEO Meg Whitman said. During a conference call to explain the move, she said the company was still evaluating what it would do with the Personal Systems Group and would have a decision back by the promised end-of-year time frame, "if not sooner." She was still supportive of HP's decision that day, including to drop webOS hardware and to buy Autonomy for $10 billion, but she also promised a review.

Hulu Plus cracks 1 million paying subscribers, but what's next?
It's almost the official end of summer and just as CEO Jason Kilar forecasted back in July, Hulu has signed up more than 1,000,000 paying Plus subscribers. He made the announcement at a Goldman Sachs investor conference while also mentioning plans to invest $375 million in content this year, even as the questions of who will buy Hulu (if its owners actually follow through with a sale) and Kilar's own fate as its head continue to hang in the air. NTT DoCoMo's mobile accessories smell your breath, tell you to put the burger down (video)

Easy Calendar for iPhone works great and is free today
I use iCal on my Mac and the iOS calendars from Apple quite a bit. I would never have even thought about using a 3rd party app on my iPhone, but Easy Calendar has changed my mind.
It's the 'easy' part that I like the most. Using it reduces the taps to create events, from 6 to about 3. Events can be edited with 2 taps, and navigating to different days or weeks is also easier than the stock iPhone calendar.
The app syncs with MobileMe, Outlook, Google Calendar and other CalDAV apps. Alarms are supported, and it is multi-lingual in Spanish, German, French and Dutch.

Sprint to launch Direct Connect October 2nd, confirms mobile hotspot capping
The way Sprint's been going lately, we're wondering if there's going to be anything left to announce at its October 7th strategy update. Another screenshot has surfaced, detailing the Now Network's intentions to launch its CDMA-based (read: no more iDEN) Direct Connect service on October 2nd, with "increased coverage" coming early next year. Chinese launch of 3G iPad 2 met with poor response
The 3G iPad 2 has so far met with an extremely poor response in mainland China, at least at retail, reports say. Apple Stores in Beijing and Shanghai are said to have been totally devoid of crowds during the Wednesday launch, even though guards and fencing were brought out in anticipation of long lineups. Scalpers which have plagued Apple retail in China were only seen in small numbers.

HP fires CEO Apotheker after 11 months, brings Whitman in
HP confirmed rumors and fired CEO Leo Apotheker after just 11 months on the job. The exit is absolute and sees him exit both the CEO and president spots as well as resign as a board member. Well, after less than a year on the job as HP's top dog Léo Apotheker is out, and former eBay CEO and one time candidate for California governor Meg Whitman is in. The move was hardly unexpected, but it very quickly evolved from quiet mumblings and rumors to full-fledged fact this afternoon. My cousin recently had emergency brain surgery. She's 10 years old, but she can't speak, and she doesn't have very good motor control. She is expected to recover fully, but in the meantime, she can't really do much.
She got an iPad from another relative, and I'm in charge of finding apps for her new toy. Do you or your nieces or nephews have any suggestions? She can read and write, and laugh at funny things still, but she might not be able to draw lines in Spy Mouse or react quickly like in Doodle Jump. Any suggestions would help!

India lands iPhone 4S parts, back two-phone Apple strategy
More evidence that an iPhone 4S is real manifested Thursday in a slew of parts obtained by iRepair India. Volunteer scientists discover two possible planets, tell NASA it missed a spot
Proving it's not all about edu-mah-cation, a group of casual star-gazers has stumbled upon what might well be a pair of new planets. Following on from gamers' success with complicated medical puzzles, an army of 40,000 online volunteer astronomy nerds signed up to the Planet Hunters project to help mine through NASA data. Facebook 'verbs' bring shared music, video, mobile apps
Facebook continued its string of news at f8 by detailing its media sharing. Part of a new system of verbs that replace the generic Like, it focuses most on music: users can spot someone listening to a song in the live ticker and start listening to the same track. Services will still need to launch the separate app, but the method will let anyone listen to similar content if it exists in a subscription service.

iPhone, Android users concerned about security
According to a survey from the NPD group, iPhone and Android users have one thing in common - they are both concerned about the security of their mobile phones. About 40% of of iOS and Android users are concerned about credit card theft, mobile device hacking, and more.
Though people are aware of potential threats to their mobile phone, only a handful do something about it. The survey reveals that 25% of smartphone owners and 35% of iPhone owners have no idea how to secure their handset. Those that are aware of mobile security solutions, 25% won't install a security product because the software is too expensive.

Apple pilots program to loan iPads to retail employees
CNET reports that Apple is trying out a new program to let retail employees "check out" an iPad for a week at a time. They're free to use the iPads and familiarize themselves with that device during the week. When the time is up, the unit is to be returned to the store's loaner stock.
For now, CNET says, the program is limited to Apple's San Francisco store in California. It certainly makes sense to let sales people familiarize themselves with the things they're selling. Color abandons app independence for Facebook, hopes you'll pay someone a 'visit'
Color launched to a fair amount of fanfare back in March, and it's not surprising, really -- the company was spearheaded by Lala founder Bill Nguyen, with ten of millions in backing from some top venture capital firms. 'iPhone 4S' cases appearing at AT&T corporate stores
New cases for an "iPhone 4S"-style device are showing up at AT&T corporate stores around the US, says BGR. The site has obtained photos of Speck and Otterbox cases which appear similar to existing ones for the iPhone 4, but with the critical difference of larger holes where an iPhone's camera and flash would normally be situated. Given the timing of the accessories and a single consistent change, it's believed that Apple may indeed be producing a modestly upgraded version of the iPhone 4.

Well, Mark's just unveiled Facebook's new look at his f8 keynote, and he's calling it Timeline. The idea is to make it easier to see what you want to see from your past, by placing a, surprise surprise, timeline on the right edge of your profile page that breaks down your content by year and month. HP may fire CEO, bring Whitman in by market close Thursday
HP may be ready to fire Leo Apotheker as soon as Thursday, more than one source claimed at mid day. The tip to AllThingsD had the 11-month CEO out and replaced by former eBay head Meg Whitman after the stock market closes, between 4PM and 4:30PM Eastern. Let's separate those two questions because there's a cut-and-dried answer for the first, but not for the second.
ARC refers to the new LLVM Objective-C automated memory management scheme. With ARC, you can focus more on your code semantics, leaving many of the memory issues to the compiler.
Without a doubt ARC stands for Automatic Reference Counting. You can confirm this for yourself by visiting the official Technical Specification page

News: Otterbox iPhone 4S case packaging surfaces
Photos showing the packaging for a claimed “iPhone 4S” case have surfaced online. A rumor from Japan's Nikkei newspaper suggests wireless carrier KDDI will begin selling the iPhone 5 early next year. This deal would end the exclusive iPhone agreement Japanese carrier Softbank has enjoyed the past few years. And enjoy it, Softbank has.
In its June quarterly earnings, Softbank's net income jumped 500% year over year due to sales to the iPhone and iPad. This impressive growth could end if KDDI gets the iPhone. The two carriers would be on same playing field and competition would hinge on plans and pricing, not phone availability. This is a change that could potentially shake up the mobile phone industry in the island country.

Google, Oracle still without Android deal, to talk again
Google and Oracle are likely to have a third or possibly fourth day of required settlement talks after deadlocked negotiations continued on for a second day, according to orders from presiding Magistrate Judge Grewal. Attorneys from both sides are to call the judge on Thursday and determine when "further discussions" will take place. The presences of Google CEO Larry Page and his Oracle equivalent Larry Ellison is also now optional, as Grewal wanted to know if either side thought the executives would be needed.

Quark Publishing System 9.1 updates for compatibility
Quark has released an update to the Quark Publishing System, v9.1. The upgrade primarily implements support for QuarkXPress 9.1, and the matching App Studio, used to create and publish iPad publications for the iOS App Store. Report: In-app purchases a strong source of iOS app revenue
iOS app developers who are looking to make big bucks on the App Store should consider using the in-app purchase model, according to a recently published study from Distimo. In-app purchases are a huge source of revenue, accounting for a whopping 72 percent of all App Store revenues.
That number has increased drastically from July of 2010, when only 28 percent of App Store revenues came from in-app purchases. What's even more surprising is that only four percent of all apps are currently using the in-app purchase model.
This all points to a trend of freemium apps dominating the App Store. These, of course, are apps that are free to download and try out, but require an in-app purchase to suppl

SMS auf Lufthansa-Flügen bald erlaubt - Telefonieren nicht
Lufthansa-Vorstand Carsten Spohr kündigt im Interview mit der "Süddeutschen Zeitung" an, den SMS-Versand in Lufthansa-Flugzeugen künftig gestatten zu wollen: "Möglicherweise werden wir den Versand und Empfang von SMS an Bord erlauben. Das könnten wir technisch ermöglichen, ohne damit gleichzeitig das Telefonieren zuzulassen". Das Verbot des Telefonierens begründet er mit dem Ruhebedürfnis der Mitreisenden. Also keine Unterhaltung mit dem Mutterplaneten - dafür aber ein individuelles Unterhaltungsprogramm, welches es in Zukunft auch auf Kurzstrecken in Deutschland und Europa geben soll. VIA Technologies sues Apple over microprocessor patents
Taiwanese chipmaker VIA Technologies has filed a patent infringement suit against Apple, Bloomberg reports. The case was submitted yesterday through a federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, and accuses Apple of violating three US patents related to microprocessors. "The products at issue generally concern microprocessors included in a variety of electronic products such as certain smartphones, tablet computers, portable media players and other computing devices," VIA court documents read.

Wisconsin library lending out iPads
The public library in Eau Claire, Wisconsin has launched a program that lets customers borrow iPads instead of books. Each iPad is packed with over 1,000 eBook classics, ten audiobooks and a bunch of apps. The iPads can be rented in the library for four hours at a time or taken home for up to seven days.
The library has 44 iPads that were purchased with a grant. Library director John Stoneberg looked at different tablet and eReader alternatives for this program, but chose the iPad because of "its place as a tablet computer marketplace leader and its flexibility in providing more access to library-related content than an e-reader-only device."

Gartner: iPad has 73.4% of tablets in 2011 as Android flails
Gartner refreshed its estimates for tablet share in a view that further cemented Apple's lead. It now saw the iPad taking more share in 2011 than predicted just five months ago, up five points to 73.4 percent, or 46.7 million iPads. The analyst group lowered its expectations for Android at the same time and saw it getting just 17.3 percent, or 11 million tablets.

iPhone showing 89 percent retention rate, survey indicates
Apple has the best customer retention rate of any smartphone manufacturer by far, a new UBS survey suggests. The company has 89 percent retention according to UBS data, the next closest competition coming from HTC, which has still only managed 39 percent. The biggest decline in the past 18 months is attributed to BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, which slipped from 62 to 33 percent.

It seems as though scammers have found a neatly exploitable hole in iTunes accounts, but they may have bitten off more than they can chew with their latest victim. HTC strikes Dropbox deal, will offer 5GB free on Sense 3.5 phones
HTC has now launched itself into the clouds, confirming that its latest Android phones will get an extra 3GB of storage with Dropbox. Nokia on Thursday showed its seriousness in attempting to mend its reputation in smartphones by formally promoting Henry Tirri to the role of Chief Technology Officer. Der ehemalige Entwicklungschef von IE Mobile bei Microsoft konnte sich auf seinem Twitter-Kanal einfach nicht beherrschen und informierte seine Abonnenten frisch, fromm, fröhlich und frei über seine Meinung zu einem der kommenden Windows Phones von Nokia und hielt dabei auch mit Kritik nicht hinter den Berg. Analyst tips huge quarters ahead for Apple, sets $530 price
Wedbush analyst, Scott Sutherland has issued a research note detailing his expectation for Appleís financial results for the upcoming fiscal quarters. Gmail's web app adds multiple accounts, mobile signature
I do have my Gmail account connected to my iPhone's Mail app through IMAP, but occasionally there are still times (mostly when searching my archived mail) that I need to use the mobile Safari web app version of the popular mail service. So it's good to hear that Google is still updating that feature. Facebook staff leaks shared, live music listening
Facebook's music service launching tomorrow will have a unique live social listening option between friends. Creative director Ji Lee briefly tweeted and promptly pulled word of a "listen with your friend" feature in the ticker, which was just added to Facebook on Wednesday. Report: Apple to loan iPads to retail employees at SF store
Apple has detailed plans to launch a pilot program to loan retail employees an iPad 2, which they could use freely for a week to help further familiarize them with iOS 5 and various apps, reports CNet. LG Optimus EX bound for South Korea, still won't pay alimony
Despite its rather curious name, the LG Optimus EX (aka the LG SU-880) just might be your soulmate -- provided you live in South Korea. The 9.5mm device appears ready to take SK Telecom by storm with a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU (with no indication of make or model), Android 2.3, 4-inch WVGA TFT-LCD display and five megapixel camera; it's also said to be coming in black and white varieties. Massachusetts AG begins inquiry into iTunes account fraud
Apple may be in violation of a state law in Massachusetts that requires companies to notify the commonwealth of any security breaches that result in a risk of identify theft or fraud for residents of the state, says the state's Attorney General, Martha Coakley. She added that she herself was a victim of iTunes fraud that emptied her bank account, after thieves stole her debit card information and used it to make a slew of purchases from iTunes, reports Threatpost, a Kaspersky security blog.

DirecTV iPad app upgrade adds easy multiroom DVR control, HDUI compatibility

YouTube gets 2D-to-3D conversion, drops 15-minute cap
YouTube boosted its editing tools Wednesday with more than what it had already added just last week. A beta addition lets users convert 2D videos to 3D with a single-click tool. Microsoft Seattle store opens October 20 near Apple
Microsoft's long-expected Seattle store will open October 20, the company said Wednesday. Located in University Village, the shop will follow a Microsoft pattern of holding a free concert, this time for The Black Keys, to lure visitors who wouldn't show otherwise. Boingo: iPad and iPhone, not Android, driving airport Wi-Fi
Apple's devices have been largely responsible for driving the rises in Wi-Fi traffic at airports, Boingo found on Wednesday. Ken Burns documentary 'Prohibition' will debut on iPad and iPhone
Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns's latest project, Prohibition, is set to debut on the iPhone and iPad on September 23 via the PBS iOS app. The first episode will debut on iOS devices, but the three-part series won't be shown on the PBS TV channel or streamed on its site until October 2-4.

Windows 8 ditches '80s BIOS boot for streamline UEFI
Every time we reboot our computers, that scrolling code takes us right back to the days of War Games and Tab. Bringing us into the 21st century, Microsoft has decided to ditch the old boot by beautifying the whole experience with a graphical menu. Windows 8 will replace the standard fugly BIOS system with a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) -- giving users a high resolution logo and a graphical menu to gaze upon while powering up their PC. Sprint to cap phone hotspot data to 5GB in time for iPhone 5
Sprint will make one additional concession to its service just as it's about to get the iPhone 5. Newly leaked staff memos have shown that it will cap the $30 Mobile Hotspot plan to 5GB of data on October 2.
