It's been just over two weeks since HP announced plans to discontinue production of its webOS devices, and speculation over the future of the platform is still going strong. Just this week, Samsung CEO Choi Gee Sung put to rest rumors of a webOS deal, and now two leaked missives from inside HP show plans to split the webOS global business unit in two. San Francisco Police Department now admits it 'assisted' Apple investigators

We were skeptical at first, as this sounded too weird to be true, but it seems "three or four" plainclothes SFPD officers did, in fact, accompany private Apple detectives to the home of Sergio Calderón, a 22-year-old resident of Bernal Heights on the hunt for a missing iPhone 5. Mac cracks 6% desktop share, iOS claims 53% real share

Apple broke through a symbolic barrier at the start of September as a study of desktop market share from NetApplications revealed that it had broken through the six percent mark in desktop usage share for the first time. The Mac hit 6.03 percent in August and had gained nearly a full point over the course of one year. Although it had yet to dislodge Microsoft from its dominant spot, almost all the gain was at Windows' expense, as the OS dipped from nearly 94 percent last August to 92.9 percent.

PocketBook, primarily known for its e-readers, introduced the A 10 this week at IFA -- that's "A" for Android and "10" for 10-inches (well, 10.1 inches). The Android in this case is Gingerbread, nothing particularly exciting on that front, in a world that has largely moved on to Honeycomb in all its iterations, but at the very least, the company is doing some cool stuff on the design front in a world of infringingly lookalike devices. North American Eagle project pumps out WiFi, takes aim at land speed records

Most folks would be content if their jet-powered vehicle did nothing but break land speed records, but not so with the team behind the North American Eagle project. They've gone and also stuffed some WiFi equipment inside the nose of the vehicle, which they hope will be able to transmit data back to an experimental mesh WiFi network set up around the dry lake bed while the vehicle is in the process of breaking the sound barrier. That hasn't happened just yet, but the vehicle itself has already topped speeds of 400 miles per hour -- which is only half of what the team eventually hopes to reach.

Lenovo exec claims Samsung only sold 20K Galaxy Tabs in 2010

Lenovo's Western Europe consumer product director Andrew Barrow leveled a significant accusation against Samsung at IFA on Friday. He claimed that, of Samsung's million Galaxy Tabs shipped through its first two months in 2010, only 20,000 had actually been sold. Doom may run on just about everything these days, but one place it hasn't been very accessible during the past 17 years -- regardless of the device -- is in Germany. Judge may force Oracle, Google into settlement talks

Oracle and Google may have no choice but to spend one to two days doing nothing but negotiating a settlement in Oracle's ongoing lawsuit over Java use in Android. Judge William Alsup said he was "inclined' to make the two discuss a deal in front of a federal Magistrate Judge with their "top executive officers," possibly involving Oracle chief Larry Ellison and his Google counterpart Larry Page. Lawyers for both teams had until September 7 to comment and pick relevant leaders for talks.

Apple is testing its system-wide integration of Nuance speech-to-text technology in iOS 5, says 9to5Mac, citing unnamed Apple employees. SFPD: we did give Apple permission for iPhone 5 search

The SFPD in a follow-up to its investigation was told by the SFPD that the controversial iPhone 5 hunt did occur with its blessing. After a check, Lt. Troy Dangerfield told SFWeekly that four police officers followed Apple senior investigator Tony Colon and one other Apple official in the search of Sergio Calderon's house. Apple Store Hamburg nears opening day

I didn't get a chance to swing by the site of the upcoming Jungfernsteig Apple Store when I was in Hamburg this week, but the guys at case manufacturer Alkr did (no surprise, it's their home town). The store is featuring giant red window panels and is said to be getting close to readiness for its first customers. The center sign translates as "We (will be) pleased to greet you here soon." Seems pretty straightforward, no? The larger side signs say 'Moin,' which is a slang form of 'Hello' that's commonly used in parts of Northern Germany.
