London Philharmonic Orchestra goes cover band with tribute to video game themes
If you've ever caught yourself humming the Angry Birds theme song, then perhaps you should check out tonight's London Philharmonic Orchestra's video game tribute concert. The group will play more than 20 songs made famous by games like Tetris, Zelda, Call of Duty and of course, Mario Bros., as part of London's annual music festival. Mobile Safari still dominates mobile browsing
Mobile Safari continues its reign as the dominant mobile browser according to new data from web analytics firm Net Applications. Mobile Safari grabs a respectable 53% of mobile browser usage share, while its closest competitor, Opera Mini, grabs only 20.77%. Coming in third is the Android browser with 15.73% usage share.

HTC Flyer Honeycomb ROM leaks, not for the timid tableter
One of the biggest knocks against the HTC Flyer when it launched (besides the extra $80 the stylus would cost you) was that it shipped with a Sensed-up version of Gingerbread, instead of the more tablet-appropriate Honeycomb. Amazon tablet coming in November for $250?
Much ink has been spilled in the rumor mill about a coming Amazonian tablet, and now those rumors look to be confirmed. TechCrunch has apparently gotten some time with Amazon's forthcoming slate, and reports that it has a 7-inch, backlit color capacitive screen and is bereft of physical buttons. Word on the web is that the hardware is already good to go, and Amazon is making the last few software tweaks before it goes on sale this November. The tablet is running a heavily skinned version of Android that was developed without any help from the folks in Mountain View. Daily iPad App: Solar Walk
Want to tour the Solar System? Solar Walk is a just-updated universal iOS app that allows you to do just that. The new version has support for 3D, so you get some rather stunning renditions of planets and satellites that are more realistic than what's available in a 2D presentation. I reviewed the app in 2010 and found it to be very educational.
Solar Walk would be very nice for teachers, who could plug it into external monitors in the classroom. Archos A100S tablet hits the FCC, does the opposite of a full reveal
It looks like the folks at Archos are keeping our friends at the FCC busy this summer. Following in the footsteps of the mysterious A70S2 tablet and the coy A80S, the A100S internet tablet is now making its way through the regulatory gatekeeper. Dish reportedly launching Blockbuster movie streaming service next month
Dish Network already has its DishOnline streaming service for its own paying customers, but it looks like it's now set to take direct aim at Netflix with a standalone subscription service that will be open to everyone. According to Bloomberg, that will operate under the company's recently acquired Blockbuster brand and, in what's surely a bitter pill for Netflix to swallow, it's said to include titles from Starz (which also handles movies from Disney and Sony). San Francisco man alleges Apple sent fake police for iPhone
The San Francisco man who claims to have faced a since debunked SFPD raid over a supposedly missing iPhone has since alleged that the visitors were Apple staff pretending to be SFPD police. The target, Sergio Calderon, said that the six visitors not only questioned him under the guise of being officers but searched his home. While none identified themselves with Apple at the time, a phone number given by "Tony" was linked by SFWeekly to Tony Colon, who identifies himself (PDF) as a senior investigator at Apple.

iPhone 4 prototype sellers charged in California, plead not guilty
The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that two people involved in last year's "iPhone 4 prototype found in a bar" fiasco are being charged in San Mateo County Superior Court for their respective roles in the incident, which led to numerous photos of the upcoming iPhone model being posted online months ahead of its official release.

Eye-Fi's wireless cards push photos straight from digital cameras without cables, but what if you want to pull some pics back the other way? Toshiba's solving that problem with the two-way FlashAir, an 802.11 b/g/n enabled 8GB SD Card that can also exchange data directly with compatible devices. If pushing photos to a camera isn't your bag you can always always use FlashAir as a mountable wireless drive in your SD-enabled tablet. Acer: Windows Phone will profit from Google-Motorola deal
Acer EMEA president Walter Deppeler commented Friday that he saw Microsoft, not Google, profiting the most from Google's buyout of Motorola. The acquisition was a "good gift" as it would lead some companies to go to another OS now that they had to compete against Google in hardware, Reuters was told. Acer itself has primarily been an Android phone designer in the past two years but is getting back with the M310 due this fall.

Eric Schmidt "couldn't stay on" Apple's board (Updated)

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt spoke with Salesforce Chairman CEO Mark Benioff in a Q&A session earlier this week. The former CEO had kind words to say about Steve Jobs and called Jobs' reign over Apple as "the best performance of a CEO in 50 years." Though he had glowing words about Jobs, Schmidt was less enthusiastic about his time on Apple's Board of Directors.

Apple has revamped their Student Jobs page, which allows students or recent graduates to find work opportunities with Apple. The newly revamped page offers a simplified layout with job opportunities sorted into two sections:

This iPad Smart Cover-inspired iPhone keyboard looks like a winner
The idea behind this is so brilliant that it's a wonder it wasn't developed sooner: Jing Yang of eico Motion Lab in China has created the Smart Keyboard, what he bills as the world's thinnest keyboard for the iPhone.
It's based on the concept behind the iPad 2 Smart Covers. Roll the keyboard onto the screen when you want to use it, then roll it back off when you're done. Like the Smart Cover, it attaches to the bottom of an iPhone with magnets and can be used as a stand.
This hasn't been developed beyond a concept video yet, but check it out below to see the potential. This would be a fantastic Kickstarter project. You can follow any project updates via SmartKeyboard on Twitter.

New OS X 10.7.2, iCloud client seeds reach developers
Continuing a regular Friday trend, Apple has released new developer seeds of OS X 10.7.2 and the Lion iCloud client. The v10.7.2 update is now in build 11C48. Apple's online store today is offering the iPad 2 in refurbished condition starting at $649 for the refurb. 64GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi in white, which has seen a $50 price cut from $699 to $649. Microsoft: Windows Phone at 20% in 2015 is conservative
Predictions by analysts that Windows Phone would crest 20 percent by 2015 are not only realistic but cautious, Windows Phone marketing lead Achim Berg said in an interview late Thursday. He expected to go beyond that as a combination of new hardware partners and greater publicity garnered attention. Apple hunts for new product security, iOS Maps workers
Apple has opened up a series of corporate-level jobs, reports observe. These include positions for two "new product security" managers, to be based in Apple's home in Cupertino. The people will be responsible for "overseeing the protection of, and managing risks to, Appleís unreleased products and related intellectual property," according to a description. Nike apologizes for Nike+ issues, promises new platform
A letter sent to Nike+ users from the VP and GM of Nike Running, Jayme Martin, has apologized for the recent problems the platform endured lately. The letter was shared by TechCrunch, and reveals the issues include log-ins, syncing devices, sharing runs and editing profiles. Creative Zen X-Fi3 hands-on (video)
This tiny thing in our hands above is the latest PMP from Creative. Portability is clearly the thing here -- the Zen X-Fi3 is extremely tiny and light. It has a little color screen on it, as well, but don't get too excited on that front -- unfortunately the player doesn't sport a touchscreen, so you've got to use the controls on the bezel, which aren't particularly responsive. The interface, fittingly, is also pretty barebones on that front, offering the basic sort of scroll-through menus that defined music players for years.

SFPD unaware of missing iPhone prototype
The San Francisco Police Department is unaware of any investigation into a second missing iPhone prototype, according to a spokesperson. "I talked to CNET," officer Albie Esparza tells SF Weekly. "I donít know who his [the author's] source is, but we don't have any record of any such an investigation going on at this point." SFPD officers were previously claimed to have visited Bernal Heights in the matter, but Esparza insists that neither the Ingleside or Mission stations have any record of doing so.

Building Björk's "Biophillia" iPad app
Creative Applications has got an interesting post on the development of Björks new app album, Biophillia, as well as the in-app purchased track, "Virus."
As mentioned on TUAW a few weeks back, Björk released what she refers to as the first "app album" on the iOS App Store. What secret could this Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 hold? Check out the little LTE logo hiding out on the back of the device. Apple's London store faces stumbling block over sunlight restriction
A battle is brewing over a future development that could house London's newest Apple Store. The City of London owns a plot of land at 100 Cheapside and is looking to sell the property to US developer Hines. Hines has plans to build a 10-story development with both office space (87,000 square feet) and retail space (13,000 square feet).
Apple has been singled out as a possible tenant, but the company's plans to add another London store could be thwarted by a sunlight law. Under this law, neighbors have a right to block the construction of a building that blocks out sunlight.
The City of London is asking the transport and policy committees to override this sunlight law and let the building plans continue. If it does receive approval, this would put an Apple store in one of the wealthiest neighborhood of London

New London Apple Store could be stopped by sunlight laws
Apple is hoping to open a new London retail store in the city's financial district, but may be stopped by laws meant to guarantee other property owners access to sunlight, Reuters reports. A source tells the news agency that a US developer, Hines, is looking to buy real estate at 100 Cheapside and build a 10-storey development with 87,000 square feet for offices and 13,000 square feet for retail. Apple is interested in occupying the retail space, the source says.

Abundance of iPhone 5 cases support larger design
Those believing the iPhone 5 will have a major redesign were supported on Friday with two simultaneous discoveries of a glut of new cases. All of them show a design somewhat like the iPod touch but with the requisite camera, microphone, and speaker connectors. Pogoplug Mobile shares media with iOS
Pogoplug, maker of a popular line of remote storage solutions, has introduced Pogoplug Mobile, a remote storage device that lets you access your media using your iOS and Android device.
The device connects to a USB hard drive or an SD card and uses your home network to serve up the content of that drive. The mobile device can access these files through a web interface (my.pogoplug.com) or a native application available in the App Store or Android market. You can stream videos, listen to your music collection or view your photos while on the go.
Pogoplug Mobile is available for pre-order on Pogoplug's website. It's expected to arrive on October 1 for $80.

Dell S2330MX ultra-slim monitor reckons it's gorgeous, actually just 'above average'
Dell's much bragged-about skinny 23-incher just got put through its paces by the bods at HotHardware. Their conclusion? The 1080p display sports glossily good aesthetics and scores major points for its lumbar-loving 8.3-pound weight and 0.4-inch waistline (which burgeons to 1.19-inches around the ports). The twisted nematic panel isn't up to to IPS standards and won't satisfy graphics or photography pros, but the LED backlighting produces good brightness and better-than-average black levels. Wi-LAN targets Apple, Dell, HTC again over patent claims
Wi-LAN continued its profiteering campaign on Friday by starting litigation against key computer and phone makers. The Ottawa firm targeted Apple, Alcatel-Lucent, Dell, HP, HTC, Kyocera, Novatel, and Sierra Wireless for all allegedly violating two patents, the first related to CDMA voice and HSPA 3G while the second touched on LTE 4G and Wi-Fi. As in most of its lawsuits, Wi-LAN is claiming damages but is known to be hoping for a settlement instead.

IFA 2011: Acer W4 Windows Phone 7.5 Hands-On
Auf der Computex war es schon mal kurz zu sehen, und jetzt auch auf der IFA. Das Windows Phone 7 Mango von Acer nennt sich schlicht W4 und kommt mit 3,6 Zoll 800x600 Display, 1GHz Qualcomm CPU, 8GB Speicher und 5 Megapixel Autofokus Kamera. Keine Frontkamera, und auch sonst sind die Spezifikationen recht üblich für ein Windows Phone 7. Schnell genug ist es aber, leider ist Windows Phone 7.5 aber nicht - wie von manchen erhofft - auf der IFA freigegeben worden. Video nach dem Break.

Other World Computing has released a Mac compatible firmware updater for SandForce Driven solid state drives. The new updater is available as a free download from the OWC website and is designed for exclusive use with select OWC Mercury SSD models manufactured after January 2010. IFA 2011: Fraunhofer Interactive Shop Window (Video)

Das Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut HHI hat mit dem Interactive Shop Window endlich die Lücke geschlossen zwischen Kinect Hackern und Handelsketten. Tracking scheint auf der IFA über zwei Geräte zu laufen die Infrarot- Bewegungssensoren und Tiefenkamera nutzen. Die einfache Idee. In einem Schaufenster via gewohnter Touchbewegungen Dinge während Ladenschlusszeiten einkaufen. Scheint, wie man im Video nach dem Break sehen kann, schon sehr flüssig zu funktionieren, auch wenn man sich wohl einarbeiten muss, wie wir bezahlen ist uns allerdings nicht klar. Google chairman admits Motorola deal for hardware, too
Google chairman Eric Schmidt in the same Dreamforce interview where he complimented Steve Jobs also acknowledged that the buyout of Motorola was intended to get hardware. Although the company had at first characterized it as a patent deal where Motorola hardware would be kept at arm's length, Schmidt said that the buyout was for "more than just patents." Daily iPhone App: DrawRace 2
I got to see DrawRace 2 in action back at GDC this year, and it's a wild one. The title is a racing game at heart, but it plays unlike any racing game you've ever seen: Instead of driving the car around the track, you actually just draw a path around, dictating where the car will go, when it will turn, and how fast it should move. You have to still use the same rules as driving, however, as you push your finger around. Move too fast in the straights, and the car will spin out when you try to go around a curve. Or hit the side of the track accidentally, and you'll lose time in the race.

IFA 2011: LG PenTouch Touchscreen Fernseher besteht Angry Bird Test (Video)

Ihr fragt euch was eigentlich stellt man mit einem Fernseher an wie dem LG PenTouch, dessen Touchscreen man über einen Stift bedient? Klar. Angry Birds spielen. Und das scheint definitiv zu funktionieren, da es wirklich nicht viel mehr Interaktion braucht als man mit einem Stift bewerkstelligen kann. Und was noch? Keine Frage: schreiben, denn selbst die Schrifterkennung funktioniert akzeptabel. Auch das haben wir in einem Video nach dem Break. IFA 2011: Acer Aspire Ultrabook S3 Hands-On

Und jetzt ist auch Acer mit ihrem Ultrabook auf der IFA draussen. Das Aspire S3 ist 13 Millimeter dick, kommt mit Core i3, i5 oder i7 Prozessoren und hat damit eine Preisbandbreite die für jeden etwas sein könnte. Die 1366x768 Auflösung des Displays beisst sich zwar gelegentlich mit dem Spiegeln des Bildschirms, aber ist ansonsten brilliant und klar. Die metallen raue Oberfläche bietet das was man bei dieser Art von Laptop bewohnt ist, und fühlt sich gut an, ein rasanter Start von 1,5 Sekunden ist aber trotz SSD nicht zu erwarten. Näheres wird man dann rausfinden müssen, wenn man etwas mehr Zeit mit ihm hatte.

LG Optimus Sol hands-on
The Nokia 500 wasn't the only fresh handset that popped up at the Vodafone booth here at IFA, this morning. We also managed to sneak in some time with the Optimus Sol. The device is reasonably slick for what the company appears to be framing as a relatively low-end phone. At its center is a bright, glossy 3.8-inch Super Amoled display.
The Sol runs Android 2.3 with a single-core 1GHz processor -- which the company points out should be fine for those not doing heavy duty work on the thing. It certainly handled what we could throw

Nokia 500 hands-on
What's this, then? It's the Nokia 500, hanging out in the Vodafone booth. The 3.2-inch handset is awaiting an official release on the European carrier, which should be hitting around the October time frame here in Germany, according the rep we spoke with. Still no word on pricing from the carrier, but it was suggested to us that the handset would likely run €99 or less, on contract. We managed to get some hands-on time with the Symbian Anna handset, and can't say we were all that impressed by the hardware on what feels like a relatively low end phone for Nokia, a company that has offered up some of the best hardware designs in the business.

IFA 2001: Dell XPS 14z Vorankündigung

Erst mal zeigt Dell auf seiner Pressekonferenz auf der IFA sein neues Dell XPS 14z vorsichtig. Eine 14-Zoll Version des XPS15z das letztendlich kaum Änderungen zu haben scheint. Dafür aber einfach tragbarer ist. Im Design erinnert es ein wenig an alte MacBook Pros. Ein Erscheinungsdatum - ausser dieses Jahr - gibt es noch nicht. Ein Ultrabook soll dann später kommen.

Er, great Sammy, but how? First off, there's the USB-powered SE-506AB Blu-ray writer depicted above, which will give that awful Pacific boxset one last chance on your ODD-neutered Mac or netbook. Magic Numpad: Klebefolie verwandelt Magic Trackpad in Ziffernblock
Der fehlende Nummernblock an Apples aktueller schnurloser Tastatur ist für die meisten ein großes Ärgernis. Eine interessante Alternative hat Mobee Technology in petto, bei der man Apples Magic Trackpad im Handumdrehen in einen Ziffernblock verwandeln kann. Ermöglicht wird das durch den Einsatz des Magic Numpad, einer bedruckten Folie und ein wenig Software.

Es wird zeit dem MacBook Air Konkurrenz zu machen, und dafür sind die Ultrabooks ausgedacht. Mit dem Lenovo U300s könnte das gelingen. Gerade eben erst angekündigt, haben unsere US-Kollegen eine Olympus Pen E-PM1 Mini in die Hand bekommen und bei den US Open ausprobiert. Ob der 12,3 Megapixel Mini wirklich die versprochenen DSLR-Qualitäten bringt? Mit 14-42mm f/3,4-5,6 Linse (man kann auch über Adapter Micro Four Thirds Linsen anschliessen) zeigt sich vor allem im RAW Modus, dass selbst 5fps Bilder noch klar und deutlich kommen. IFA 2011: Mit Agloves in den Touchscreen Winter

Agloves sind nicht die erste Lösung die wir für das Problem Handschuhe auf Touchscreens sehen, aber irgendwie die einfachste. Dünne aber dennoch halbwegs warme kleine Handschuhe die mit Silberfäden durchzogen sind (daher der Name, Ag = Silber), die den Kontakt herstellen zwischen Handelektronik und Touchscreen und so die Bedienung mit allen zehn Fingern in den Handschuhen von Touchscreens ermöglicht. In unserem kurzen Test klappte das ohne Probleme, auch wenn man gelegentlich etwas fester drücken muss als man es gewohnt ist. Daran gewöhnt man sich aber schnell. Ob sich allerdings effektiv auf der Bühne damit iPad-Piano spielen lässt, wagen wir zu bezweifeln. Kleines Video nach dem Break.

Apple reagiert auf Zulieferer-Kritik von Umweltschützern

AT&T plan to save T-Mobile merger could shed 25% of assets
AT&T is willing to make massive concessions to preserve its buyout of T-Mobile in the light of a Department of Justice lawsuit blocking the deal, insiders claimed late Thursday. Described as a "two-track" plan, the strategy seen by Reuters would see AT&T give up as much as a quarter of T-Mobile's business, including some of the spectrum it was after, customers in key areas, and a pledge to keep T-Mobile's cheaper pricing active. Volvo and Siemens team up to build better electric engines
Electric cars are finally starting to make a dent in the market, but they've got a long way to go before you'll find one in every driveway. Thankfully companies like Volvo and Siemens are working hard to improve EV technology and grant Mother Earth a bit of a reprieve from our pollutant-spewing rides. Intel rumored putting MeeGo on hold due to lack of interest
Intel may be putting a halt to work on MeeGo after getting little to no takeup from partners, industry rumors maintained late Thursday. Apple may add USB 3.0 to Macs before Intel
Apple might not only be still open to USB 3.0 but willing to add it before Intel does on its own, sources divulged Thursday. The company has reportedly been investigating third party USB 3.0 host controller chips now that the prices of these are negligible, at below $3. Apple makes changes to iTunes Match iCloud 'streaming'
Yesterday's release of iOS 5 beta 7 made changes to the way the iTunes Match service -- which automatically populates a user's iCloud storage with songs they have various devices so that they can be spontaneously downloaded onto an iOS device -- to prevent the service from "streaming" the song into a temporary cache that is eventually deleted. AT&T scraps A-List unlimited calling for new subscribers

XtremeMac outs Luna, Soma, Tango iOS and Mac audio docks
XtremeMac on Thursday rolled out four speaker systems tailored chiefly to iOS and Mac owners. The Soma Stand is rare in having a tent-like design: it unfolds to reveal its dock and uses the two speakers as legs. It can fit everything up to iPads and lasts for as much as six hours on removable batteries.

Mac App Store highlights 'Enhanced for OS X Lion' apps
Apple has highlighted several apps on the Mac App Store that have been "Enhanced for OS X Lion." Apple's own iLife and iWork apps occupy the top spots, naturally, but over forty third-party apps are featured too.
In Apple's words, "OS X Lion is packed with innovative features including Multi-Touch Gestures, Full-Screen Apps, Resume, Auto-Save, and Versions. Here are the apps and games currently taking advantage of these new enhancements."
Apple's featured a wide array of apps, so there should be something there for everyone. If you're running OS X Lion, it's definitely worth a look.

New glass panes arrive at 5th Avenue Apple Store
New glass panels have arrived for the rebuilding of Apple's iconic glass cube at its Fifth Avenue store in New York City, TUAW reports with the help of photographer Justin Parmer. The original cube, which cost the company around $7 million to construct has been dismantled and will be replaced with a new one that follows a similar design but uses 15 much larger panes of glass rather than the 90 the previous cube required. HTC accused of tracking individual phones in Android update
A detailed examination of HTC's more recent Android 2.3.4 update has raised alarms that it might be tracking far more information about individual phones and users than it has before or should. A new tool that runs in RAM, Carrier IQ, is creating logs of data both on what apps and other commands they used as well as how long they spent in each area. HTC's own terms, as checked by InfectedROM, suggest it's not only forwarding over location and carrier information but statistics and the IMEI number, figures that could be attached to a particular phone or even individu

Hulu Plus app adds HDMI output for iPad 2
Hulu has updated its Hulu Plus iOS app, and this update provides the return of a feature that some users will really appreciate: HDMI output to video is back. That means that the Hulu app will now once again output HDMI video to a TV or monitor that you connect it to, so you can watch the service through your iPad wherever you are. Good stuff. The removal of the feature was likely the result of content restriction deals or platform issues, but Hulu has apparently resolved those problems, so HDMI away.
