Hands-on with TouchWiz UX for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Today's Samsung event in New York City was a strange scene -- the company collected Galaxy Tabs from the journalists in attendance and handed back coat check receipts, promising to give the devices back after the press conference ended. One Samsung executive acknowledged the unusual nature of the event, explaining that, "this is the first time we've held a news conference for a software update, and it probably won't be the last."

Apple considers buying another $5 billion in patents
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is considering buying InterDigital's patent portfolio, which is worth up to US$5 billion. The patents cover a wide range of mobile technologies used to transfer information over high-speed mobile phone networks. Just last month, Apple was the leader of a consortium that bought Nortel's patent portfolio for $4.5 billion.
The ownership of patents is becoming a key issue to smartphone manufacturers as sales skyrocket. Major tech companies all want a piece of the same pie and Apple isn't alone in its intere

Vonage rolls VoIP app for iPhone with in-app payments
Vonage staked out a first on Wednesday with an iPhone voice over IP app that uses in-app purchases. Time to Call (free, App Store) can make calls to real-world numbers by buying calls in blocks of 15 minutes. Prices range from 99 cents to $2 for about 100 common countries and peak at $10 for 90 more difficult to reach countries. As iTunes handles the infrastructure, users don't have to be Vonage subscribers and can pay with whatever they already use on Apple's store.

Google slams Apple and Microsoft, claims 'hostile, organized campaign' against Android waged through 'bogus patents'
It, as they say, is on. Google's Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond, made an appearance on the company's official blog today with a post not-so-subtly-titled "When patents attack Android," which directly addresses what he calls a "hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents." Nissan's 'Leaf to Home' system sends power back to your house or the grid
The Nissan Leaf may look like a car, but it turns out it will soon also be an emergency power generator on wheels. The automaker just took the wraps off its new "Leaf to Home" system in Japan this week, which promises to let you send power stored in the car back to your house in the case of an outage, or even back to the grid (letting you charge the car during off-peak hours and profiting when demand is high, for instance). Clearwire to add 120Mbps LTE Advanced to its network
Clearwire up-ended WiMAX with news Wednesday that it would make LTE and LTE Advanced its primary 4G formats. The rollout will give it peak speeds of 120Mbps or more using the same 2.5GHz frequencies and network that it already uses. While it will be LTE at first, it will be upgradeable to LTE Advanced when it becomes available and hit "at least" 100Mbps.

EA founder says Apple decline likely to follow loss of Jobs

Samsung demands 'optional' UI to get Android 3.2 on Tab 10.1
Samsung as part of the kickoff of its TouchWiz rollout for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 revealed that the update wouldn't be optional in practice for real users. Although owners will have the option of declining the custom interface, they won't have the option of upgrading to Android 3.2, Ice Cream Sandwich, or any other patch. The move would leave everyone preferring the original, stock experience locked to 3.1 for the device's remaining lifetime.

Panel makers 'under pressure' due to iPhone, iPad specs
As a result of the iPhone and iPad, display and touch panel makers are "under pressure" to upgrade the parts in their roadmaps, industry sources say. This includes everything from reducing power consumption and the thickness of sensors and glass to increasing the number of simultaneous touch points past 10. Apple reportedly readying Replay service for streaming iTunes purchase history
According to AppAdvice, Apple may be prepping a new re-downloading and streaming service called iTunes Replay. The service would let you re-download select movies and TV shows from iTunes and stream that content to a variety of iOS devices.
The Replay service will supposedly let you access shows that you purchased as for back as 2009 and will stream them to your Apple TV and iOS devices. Similar to Amazon Unbox, the number of downloads may vary from clip to clip and may be limited in number.

Americans rule in-flight internet adoption -- for now
It doesn't get more American than gnawing on a doughnut sandwich while watching Toddlers in Tiaras, right? Well, apparently, the only thing more American is engaging in these two acts while connected to in-flight internet. Apple's training site back online, Lion certifications due this fall
For the past couple of weeks (since shortly before the Lion introduction, I believe) Apple's professional training and certification site at training.apple.com has been under renovation. Today it's back with a new Lion-esque look and previews of new training courses and certifications for Apple-centric IT professionals.
The three new tracks/certs are for Lion (no surprise), Final Cut Pro X and Mac Integration Basics 10.7. None of the certification exams for those tracks are ready yet, nor are most of the course materials -- only the MIB class has full documentation available right now. Relaunch 2011: MacBug.de ist tot, es lebe MACBUG.de!
So kann es gehen – fast 4 Jahre nach unserem Start im November 2007 sind wir nun im Jahr 2011 wieder da!
Warum wir von “wieder da” sprechen? Bedingt durch viele private Gründe konnten wir zuletzt dem Projekt einfach nicht mehr gerecht werden. Wir schreiben uns selber zu, dass wir die Seite vernachlässigt hatten und überwiegend mit Nachrichten zu Apps rund um iPhone und iPad mit Hilfe unseres Partners AppZapp.de gefüttert und damit in einem Schwebe-Koma hielten, welches nicht mehr viel mit der eigentlichen Idee der Seite zu tun hatte.
Dennoch, MacBug.de war nie tot – und ist jetzt wieder mehr

HBO Go apps hit 4m downloads, coming to TVs and consoles
Time Warner head Jeff Bewkes said during a results call Wednesday that HBO Go was expanding beyond mobile apps. He expected it to arrive on Internet-capable TVs as well as game consoles in the near future. No signs were given of exactly when or on what platforms.

Analyst: iOS, OS X to start merging in 2012-2013
Apple will begin trying to merge iOS and OS X into a single platform in 2012, projects Jeffries analyst Peter Misek. The reasoning is that it would provide Apple with better profit margins, and simplify licensing content. "Users want to be able to pick up any iPhone, iPad, or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used," the analyst writes.

Qbo-Bot lernt Handzeichen, aber kein Englisch (Video)

Klar, Sprachkommandos sind die Königsklasse bei der Interaktion mit Robotern wie man zum Beispiel hier bei diesem sprachgesteuerten Quadrocopter sehen kann, aber manchmal sind Handzeichen ja auch nützlicher und der hier gezeigte Qbo hat eh so seine Probleme mit der englischen Sprache, nennt er doch Moby lustigerweise immer wieder "Mobaby". Dafür reagiert er aber zackig auf die Handzeichen und scheint sie auch nicht falsch zu verstehen: Video nach dem Break.

Samsung delays Galaxy Tab 10.1 Australia intro due to Apple

Boot Camp in Lion requires Windows 7
Apple's latest version of OS X 10.7 Lion ships with Boot Camp 4 which, according to an Apple support document, only runs Windows 7. Previous versions of Windows like Vista and XP are no longer supported. There's no reason for this change, but Apple, like Microsoft, is likely increasing its focus on the newer OS and lessening it on legacy versions.
Mac users that must run an older version of Windows will either have to keep Boot Camp 3 if they wish to upgrade to Lion or use a third-party virtualization solution from VMWare or Parallels.

Facebook buys out e-book platform maker Push Pop Press
Facebook has bought e-book platform creator Push Pop Press, according to a note on the latter's website. Until now the developer had been working on an e-book publishing platform, notably merging images, video and some limited physics technology into content. In der Beta gibt es Instant Pages schon ein paar Wochen, jetzt hat Google mit dem letzten stabilen Build in Version 13 seines Browsers die Vorladefunktion auch integriert. Apple preparing to launch video subscription service?
Apple may be on the verge of rolling out a video subscription service, says Jeffries analyst Peter Misek. "As part of Apple's roll-out of cloud video services (and eventually an iTV)," he writes in a memo, "we believe Apple has unannounced deals with all/most of the studios/TV networks that are similar to the subscription streaming deal between Amazon and CBS." UK makes disc ripping legal, won't require site blocking
Vince Cable, the United Kingdom's Business secretary, has announced major changes to that country's copyright law concerning digital media. The government will legalize "format shifting," or allowing consumers to rip content from CDs and DVDs for personal use. The government will also reverse part of last year's Digital Enforcement Act, which would have blocked websites for hosting copyrighted material. Cable said the law needed to change to conform to reasonable expectations of consumers. "We've got to bring law in line with reality," he said.

Apple stock helping the Alaska Permanent Fund more than oil
The Alaska Permanent Fund sets aside a portion of oil revenue and gives some of that money back to Alaska citizens each year. This pool of money is also used to invest in the stock market, a practice that has proved to be quite lucrative.

RIM hatte ja angekündigt, dass das Playbook noch im Sommer auch Android Apps unterstützen werde, aber es sieht so aus, als ob das nicht vor dem "späten Herbst" passieren wird. Das haben unsere US-Kollegen von einer zuverlässigen Quelle erfahren und es dürfte ein weiteres Problem für RIM werden, die ja sowieso mit dem Erhalt ihrer User-Base zu kämpfen haben.

Following yesterday's launch of Adobe Edge, Adobe has revelaed that users downloaded the first preview more than 50,000 times. The new tool from Adobe allows users to create HTML5 animations from scratch or work with existing HTML documents. Support is included for web standard graphic formats, such as GIF, JPG, and PNG, and the company claims content produced with Edge will work on any modern browser. In case you're thinking this footage is about Cocoa, the Application Programming Interface for Mac OS X, you're dead wrong. This Cocoa was a simulation tool and easy programming language for kids that was demoed at the 1996 WWDC by a young man named Gregory Miller.

OnStar Family Link brings loved ones closer together through vehicle tracking
Add this to the ever-growing list of things we're glad we didn't have back when we were teenagers. GM this week announced the release of Family Link, the latest addition to its OnStar service. The new feature lets subscribers track the exact location of vehicles at any time via an online map. Subscribers can also set up a text message alert to keep on top of the car's location. There's certainly potential for the feature as a safety tool, but it's also no doubt a long awaited addition for overbearing parents everywhere. The service is beginning life as an invitation-only pilot program that includes around 10,000 OnStar subscribers.

iTunes, Apple TV improvements to expand into iTunes Replay?
Apple is finally nearing the launch of a service of called iTunes Replay, AppAdvice claims to have learned. As described, movies and TV shows in iTunes will soon display small arrows next to them whenever they're "iTunes Replay eligible," meaning that Apple has enabled multiple downloads. Some videos may only be downloadable five times, but Replay might also allow streaming, which would not necessarily count towards the limit.

Korea fines Apple just $2,828 over iPhone location scraping
The Korean Communications Commission on Wednesday fined Apple an unusually low three million won ($2,828) over its earlier location data practices while also punishing Google. Both the iPhone and Android were found leaving vulnerabilities that would let an outsider track the location of a phone. The KCC claimed it had let the two companies off easy as it could have frozen businesses or taken three percent of location revenue from Apple, although Apple makes no real money from location positioning.

South Korea to fine Apple over location tracking
South Korea has fined Apple 3 million won (US$2,829) for the company's practice of tracking location information on the iPhone. The Korea Communications Commission investigated Apple after locationgate broke earlier this year. The agency found that Apple continued to collect user's location information even though they had turned off GPS on their handsets.

RIM launches Blackberry Torch 9810, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900, we go hands-on!
Here they are folks. Months after we first got our hands on pre-release Torch and Bold Touch handsets, RIM is finally ready to show off its latest hardware. They're all powered by a 1.2GHz processor, have 768MB of onboard RAM and -- most importantly -- run the latest operating system BB OS7.

PC makers gripe: Intel ultrabooks can't undercut MacBook Air
Intel's ultrabook spec is triggering frustration among Taiwan-area PC builders used to having cheaper machines than Apple, local contacts claimed Wednesday. Chassis guidelines requiring metal shells, solid-state drives, and very efficient lithium-polymer batteries to replicate the MacBook Air prevent the companies from undercutting Apple on price. RIM previously announced that its Playbook tablet would be able to run Android apps by the summer, but we've just heard something to the contrary. 8-bit vs. 16-bit is a standard arcade shooter (in which you take down enemies as they fly at you on a 2D screen) with one very meta twist: You can flip back and forth between an 8-bit (as in, the old NES and Atari-style graphics) and a 16-bit (like a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis) mode at any time. Not only does that change the game's graphics and feel, but it also makes enemies from that era give extra rewards when killed in the same mode, which means you can get higher scores by switching around at the right time.

RIM greatly widened its smartphone mix on Wednesday with two more BlackBerry 7 devices. The 9850 and 9860 are the first touch-only phones from RIM to get a high-resolution screen: either has a 480x800 LCD that finally makes them competitive with modern Android hardware and more comparable to the iPhone. Apple has removed access to a built-in MySQL installation in the new Lion Server, released last week, and replaced it with PostgreSQL -- along with dropping a handful of other tools previously supported under Snow Leopard Server, which has caused some server admins much consternation, according to posts on Apple's support forums. WebKit neue Weltnummer 2 — Lion meistgenutztes OS der macprime.ch-Leser
Apples Browser Safari hat von allen Browsern im vergangenen Monat Juli am meisten zugelegt. Laut den Statistiken von NetMarketshare stieg Safaris-Anteil innert Monatsfrist von 7.48 auf 8.1 Prozent. Safari hat damit für letzten Monat den Google-Browser «Chrome» als den am schnellsten wachsenden Browser abgelöst. Aber auch Chrome konnte weiter zulegen und hielt im Juli ein Marktanteil von 13.49 Prozent. Zusammengezählt erreichen die zwei grossen WebKit-Browser demnach 21.59 Prozent Marktanteil und damit erstmals mehr als die Gecko-Engine, welche in Firefox werkelt und auf 21.48 Prozent kommt. Würde man die zahlreichen auf Apples WebKit basierenden Klein-Browser dazu zählen, dürfte Apples WebKit gar noch etwas mehr Marktanteil haben. Pegatron still on track to ship iPhone 5 in September
Pegatron's plans to be a second iPhone 5 supplier are still on track, the supply chain divulged late Tuesday. Its order is now expected to be 10 million rather than the previously hinted at 15 million, but it would still ship finished devices in September. The data partly contradicts talk that the new Apple hardware might not appear until October, since Pegatron would be shipping directly to Apple and customers.

Android 3 tablets just 1.5% of Google's total user base
Google's updated Android usage stats on Tuesday revealed that tablets were still a disproportionately small slice of its active user base relative to Apple's stake with the iPad. All versions of Android 3 made up just 1.5 percent of owners reaching Android Market in the two weeks before the start of August. Only about 13 percent of that subset, or 0.2 percent of the entire device population, is using Android 3.2.

UK set to legalize CD and DVD copying for personal use
The fact that it hasn't technically been legal may not have stopped many folks in the UK from ripping their CDs all these years, but it looks like there may soon be a tad less anarchy involved in that process. Reuters is reporting that the British government will announce tomorrow that it plans to legalize the copying of CDs and DVDs onto computers or portable media players for personal use -- a move that will bring it up to speed with most other European countries (and the US and Canada). Of course, the key words there are "personal use." If you're looking for an app to combine checkins for Foursquare and Facebook Places try Checkin+ from the makers of IM+, a multi-protocol IM tool. Checkin+ will do just that, and adds the ability to see locations in a 2D map or 3D augmented reality view.
Checkin+ will also allow you to see friends nearby, which is fun for when you were supposed to meet somewhere, but you can't quite remember where. „Borderlands“ gehörte im Jahr 2009 mit über zwei Millionen verkauften Exemplaren zu den größeren Überraschungshits – auch wenn man bei einem von Gearbox Software entwickelten Titel ohnehin stets von einigen Interessenten an der (virtuellen) Ladentheke ausgehen kann.
