Google lands Photovine trademark, hints deeper photo sharing

Google may be planning to expand its photo sharing beyond just Picasa. The company obtained a trademark for "Photovine" on June 7 and used proxy firm MarkMonitor to acquire Photovine.com just a week later. Few clues exist as to what it would involve, although the trademark bills it as "transmission of visual images and data by telecommunications networks" and "on-line social networking services."

Nintendo says one Wii U controller per console, robs player two of extra screen

Nintendo's tablet-esque Wii U controller raised a few questions when it was announced at E3. Questions like, "What kind of crazy games are going to use that thing," and "How much will a second controller cost me?" The latter, at least, has been answered. Nothing. You don't need one. Mozilla quietly posts complete Firefox 5

Mozilla in a low key move has posted the finished version of Firefox 5 (direct links: Mac, Linux 32-bit, Linux 64-bit, Windows). The new OS is the first of part of a Chrome-like fast schedule and focuses mostly on minor improvements over Firefox 4. It now recognizes CSS transitions, has better support for HTML5 and its Canvas mode, and is tackling privacy with a more prominent Do Not Track option.

Apple details Lion upgrade process for business, education

Apple handled a longstanding question of how Mac OS X Lion's download-only nature would translate to large-scale licenses for business and education on Friday with a document (below) explaining the strategy. The company will give business users bulk licenses at the same $30 price with at least 20 users. Internal documents we've received show Time Warner Cable is planning a major update for both its live TV streaming TWCable TV iPad app and many of its set-top boxes. TWCable TV 2.0 is scheduled to arrive on June 28th with new features including a seven day program guide, and the ability to use it as a remote control or to schedule the DVR remotely. Around that same time, its cable headends around the country will deliver the "Florence" update that brings its OpenCable Digital Navigator software to version 4.5 on certain Cisco, Motorola and Samsung set-top boxes. PhotoFast puts out iFlashDrive for iPhone, iPad file sharing

PhotoFast has introduced a flash drive that makes it easy to transfer data from Apple portable devices to others as well as Macs or even a Windows PC. The i-FlashDrive features a standard USB connector on one side and an iPhone, iPad or iPod connection on the other. An accompanying app enables file storage, viewing and management.

Full-screen web apps should get a JavaScript boost in iOS 5

Lots of information about iOS 5 is still hidden under the developer NDA, but here's one tidbit that's sneaked out: Some web apps will be faster under the new operating system. So says one developer over on a coding message board; it confirms the rumor that full-screen web apps opened from the iPhone and iPod touch's homescreen will get to take advantage of the JavaScript Nitro engine. In terms of what this means for users, there's not a lot of difference -- you'll still click the icon on your homescreen and the web app will launch like normal. Sony head: we want PS Vita to be as needed as Android, iOS

Sony's SCEA president Jack Tretton in a conversation Friday hoped that the PlayStation Vita would be as essential for many people as an Android or iOS device. When asked about competing with Apple and Google, he saw it as a matter of making the Vita an essential device.
