Magellan updates Roadmate for iPhone with new interface and free 'lifetime' map updates
Magellan has pushed out a rather massive and free update to iPhone Roadmate users. The entire engine and user interface have been freshened up and greatly improved (to my taste, that is). Yelp! and Google search are included, and the app has added personalization features to the display, including arrival time, distance to destination, and your speed.
The update is free for current users, and the USA version of RoadMate sells for US $34.99. The North American version is $54.99.

Apple accepts WebGL into iAd, not public iOS 5
Apple will be supporting WebGL in iOS 5, but only for iAd developers, says Apple's Chris Marrin on a WebGL mailing list. The technology is a new rendering standard which allows 3D on websites without loading a plugin. Restricted to iAd, however, it will likely be used mostly for Flash-style advertising, including 2D animated sprites.

Kaspersky CTO says Apple must open iOS, has vested interest
Kasperksy's chief technical officer Nikolay Grebennikov in a discussion Friday argued that Apple had a mandate to open iOS to non-App Store titles. He believed that Apple "simply can't continue" with its contained approach and, to eliminate the drubbing in market share, had to loosen restrictions. In spite of Apple's self-contained system keeping out rogue apps, he told Computing he didn't believe the company could properly contain malware and needed antivirus firms like Kaspersky to take care of the code.

Alleged shot of Sony Ericsson Xperia Duo surfaces
There's not really much more than the image above to go on with this one, but what you're looking at is purported to be the as-yet-unannounced Xperia Duo, which may or may not be Sony Ericsson's first dual-core phone. As you can see, it bears some resemblance to the Xperia Arc, with what appears to be a large, edge-to-edge display and a UI that's apparently been tweaked a bit from what we've seen previously on SE phones, including a different weather widget and media player controls under the dock. Of course, it is still just a single image, so we'd recommend taking it with the usual grain of salt for the time being.

Refurbished deals from Apple's online store for today include price breaks on MacBooks, iPods and more. The refurb. 17-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive is now $1929. Apple, Intel locked in as bidders for Nortel patents
Both Apple and Intel have been cleared to bid in Nortel's vital wireless patent auction, contacts slipped out on Friday. After investigations, both have been allowed to go ahead. Ericsson had also been greenlit, according to the Wall Street Journal, and was being accompanied by RPX, a proxy company that buys patents to avoid them being used against its clients.

Apple expands patent complaint against Samsung to include more devices
Keeping track of all accusations flying back and forth in the ongoing patent brouhaha between Apple and Samsung? Then we're afraid you'll have to update your scorecards again, as Apple has now amended its complaint with some even stronger language than before, and broadened the scope of the devices involved in the suit. According to Apple, the Droid Charge, Infuse 4G, Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy S II and a handful of other Samsung devices are all also infringing on the patents in question, which now total eight in all (two previously included have been thrown out, but three new ones have been added). BBC experimenting with dual-screen devices, more
The BBC is looking to more closely integrate the content it provides and the technology through which it is delivered. This strategy was outlined by their Director of Future Media in a BBC blog today. One way the BBC plans to do it is with dual screen companion devices, that provide supplemental information to augment what's being broadcast over the TV screen.

In this installment of our WWDC interviews, our own Brett Terpstra talks to Pierre Bernard of Houdah Software at WWDC 2011. Qi-Hardware debuts free, open source wireless solution, not a threat to WiFi
Qi-Hardware has a bit of an obsession with free, open source, and underpowered. Ryz Media has released a new hardware accessory to compliment its existing MyTVRemote iOS application. The new hardware, dubbed the Q, features a colorful orb design and plugs into the phone's headset jack, allowing users to control most popular entertainment devices. The MyTVRemote software features a customizable program guide for organizing all of a user's favorite shows, as well as social integration via Facebook and Twitter. Sega Pass hacked, LulzSec vows innocence and defense
Sega on Friday in a warning to gamers said that its Sega Pass online service had been hacked. It took down the service after discovering that the database had been compromised. Those at PlayStation Lifestyle and elsewhere had been told that e-mail addresses and encrypted passwords had been compromised.

Tablet LCD deliveries suggest big iPad delivery spike
Apple is facing the mother of all backlogs with the iPad 2, yet still producing enough tablets to be a major player in the tablet display market. Analysis released by Displaybank suggests Apple was responsible for the lion's share of 9.7-inch displays shipped in May.
Apple's two LCD suppliers, LG and Samsung, were responsible for 4.5 million of the 5.38 million tablet displays that flew off the production line in May. Most of these 9.7-inch displays were destined for the iPad as relatively few competing tablets use the 9.7-inch size. HP ships free TouchPads to homebrew devs, may want something in return

Lack of consolidated Apple IDs causing iCloud frustrations
An official policy regarding Apple IDs is already causing problems for iCloud users, people say. For various reasons -- such as working in different countries -- some users may have multiple Apple IDs, to which different iTunes downloads may be linked. If a person tries to turn on Automatic Downloads for two or more accounts, an iOS pop-up warns that people must wait 90 days to download old purchases with a secondary iTunes account.

More iPhone than Android owners want mobile wallets
Google may have beaten Apple to NFC, but a recent survey reveals that only 24% of Android users are actually interested in using the technology to make purchases. iPhone owners are still waiting for an NFC-enabled model, but 40% can't wait to pay in a store using their phone.
Much of this difference can be attributed to the attitude of iPhone owners. Jennifer Jacobsen, PR director of Retrevo, says "If there's a new trend in mobile tech and what you can do with a smartphone, iPhone owners seem more ready to try it than other cell phone users."

MainStage 2.1.3 fixes MIDI, Undo command problems
Apple has posted an update for MainStage, the live performance component of Logic Studio. Version 2.1.3 is a relatively minor update, improving "overall stability" as well as fixing a handful of specific errors. These include bad display of Audio Unit plugin presets, and MIDI input being forced to channel 1. Perhaps the most critical fix deals with a bug that caused MainStage to quit when using Undo after deleting a patch.

Sharp Aquos Phone SHI12 visits the FCC, flaunts its 3D camera in drawings
It's rare that we see Sharp's Aquos phones here in the US, but one model, at least, could be making the long journey stateside. A handset dubbed the CMDA SHI12 just cleared the FCC, and after comparing the drawings in the report to shots of devices already on the market, we're pretty sure it's the IS12SH that Sharp announced for Japan a few weeks back. RIM's poor results spark investor revolt: 'seen this before'
RIM's collapse in performance in spring has triggered one of the worst instances of investory backlash in the company's history. As of mid-day Friday, the company's stock had dropped about 22 percent, aided mostly by an after-hours selloff late Thursday but a lack of confidence on Friday morning. Apple Q3 cash could allow major competitor buyouts
Apple will probably have accumulated so much in cash, cash equivalents and securities by the end of the third quarter that it could buy out several major smartphone rivals, says Asymco's Horace Dediu. The quarter ends later this month, and Dediu estimates that Apple will have hoarded over $70 billion. After Q2 Apple revealed that it had amassed more than $65.8 billion in reserves, theoretically enough to keep Apple running through mid-2018 without any new revenue.

US smartphone data use spiking, Android still hogging data
New Nielsen studies on Friday showed that mobile data use was growing rapidly even as the cost of it was staying the same or going down. Mobile data use was up 89 percent on average in early 2011 from 230MB a month a year earlier to 435MB today. Since most data plans were either staying the same or dropping down in price due to caps, the price per megabyte had actually been cut almost in half, down 46 percent to eight cents.

Apple revises and expands its trademark infringement case against Samsung
Today is the day Apple and Samsung will meet with the judge in its patent infringement case to discuss Samsung's request to see the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3. Before this meeting, Apple revised its trademark claim and expanded it to include other Samsung hardware.
The revision also adds stronger language to the complaint by substituting words like "misappropriated" with "copied" and providing additional details on how Apple's powerful brand and unique products have been hurt by Samsung's copycat mobile devices. The suit's main document now sits at an impressive 63 pages, up from the original 38.

iTunes ahead of Amazon, trailing Hulu in online video
A Citigroup survey ranked the top players in the online video market and Apple iTunes falls into fifth place. It's a competitive market, especially among the middle players.
Not surprisingly, YouTube dominates online video with a whopping 69.% market share. Facebook, Netflix and Hulu are jostling in the middle with 27%, 24.5% and 22% market share, respectively. Apple pulls in behind this trio with a 9.8% market share and following Apple with a 7% marketshare is Amazon and its Unbox service.
Apple's position is not a bad one with almost 10% marketshare but it has a long way to go to reach Netflix and Hulu.

Developers have confirmed that iOS 5 solves a slowdown for home screen web apps. A confirmation Thursday showed that Web.app, the gateway for web apps operating outside of Safari, has the same "dynamic-codesigning" privilege as Safari and can use the Nitro JavaScript engine key to the speed-up in iOS 4.3. Dead battery in Belgrade? Head to the city's Obrenovac district, where a group of students has developed the world's first public charging station powered entirely by solar energy. Known as the Strawberry Tree, the structure's 16 ports support a variety of handhelds, allowing pedestrians to juice up their cell phones in just ten to 15 minutes, at no charge. Its built-in batteries can also store up to a month's worth of back-up energy, enabling the station to hum along at night, or even during Serbia's less sunny seasons. Spotify publicly hints US launch in July
Spotify has publicly hinted that it will finally launch is long expected streaming music service in July. The most successful platform of its kind in Europe with over one million paid subscribers, Spotify has now landed the remaining deals it with record companies necessary to launch the service in the US. Tablet LCD deliveries in May hint major iPad shipment spike
A new breakdown of tablet display shipments by Displaybank on Friday has hinted that iPad shipments could be much higher than they were in the winter. Deliveries of 9.7-inch touchscreens, used almost exclusively by the iPad, hit 5.38 million units in May alone. About 4.5 million of those were from Apple's two main contractors for iPad screens, LG Display (three million) and Samsung (1.5 million).

Wii U dev kits to be updated to latest prototyping hardware in the coming weeks
Nintendo couldn't have put all those glorious names of third party developers up alongside its Wii U announcement earlier this month without giving those companies at least a glimpse at the actual hardware they'd have to code on. Android tablet makers giving up, moving to big smartphones
A number of Android smartphone makers who have turned their hand to Android tablets to try cash in on the tablet PC category dominated by the iPad are said to giving up. Tablets sorgen für steigenden Bedarf an Multitouch-Displays
Wie DigiTimes mit Verweis auf Marktforscher von Displaybank berichtet, stieg die Nachfrage nach Multitouch-Displays im Vergleich zum April um 28 Prozent. Paragraft gets iOS Markdown editing right
I just discovered Paragraft, a text editor for iPad and iPhone which boasts some ingenious Markdown features (if I've lost you already, check out the TUAW Markdown Primer for a crash course).

Exactly as promised, Redbox is today inaugurating a new branch to its media-renting venture with the introduction of video game rentals at $2 a day. Wir kennen Einräder, wir kennen den Segway. Der Tilto (steht für Tilt and go) kombiniert die beiden zu einem Vehikel, mit dem man - wie man im Video sieht - völlig entspannt und nachdenkend über Parkplätze segeln kann. 20 Kmh schafft der Tilto als Prototyp, aber wir wären wirklich verwundert wenn er hierzulande eine Zulassung bekäme, schliesslich regt er nahezu dazu an, in Gedanken versunken durch den Verkehr zu säuseln. Microsoft decides to pass on WebGL over security concerns
Well, it looks like Microsoft is taking those warnings about WebGL pretty seriously. The company has decided not to support the web-based 3D standard because it wouldn't be able to pass security muster. Highest on the list of concerns is that WebGL opens up a direct line from the internet to a system's GPU. To make matters worse, holes and bugs may crop up that are platform or video card specific, turning attempts to plug holes in its defense into a game of whack-a-mole -- with many players of varying reliability. MacGameStore announces Trainz Simulator for Mac

Apple releases update to MainStage 2
Apple has released an update to its MainStage 2 software. MainStage is part of the Logic Studio suite and allows performers to bring virtual instruments and effects to live concerts. Full release notes for the update are available here, but the major improvements include:
Fixes to an issue where presets for Audio Unit plugins were incorrectly displayed.
Addresses an issue where incoming MIDI was forced to channel 1.
Resolves an issue that could cause MainStage to quit unexpectedly when using Undo after deleting a patch.

Motorola's WiFi Xoom gains access to Google Movies, just in time for the weekend
Hard to say why Google chose to roll its Movies app out first to 3G-packed tablets sporting Android 3.1 (a smaller testbed, perhaps?), but it looks as if it won't matter for much longer. We've received a number of tips this evening suggesting that Google Movies can now be downloaded from the Android Market by WiFi-only Xoom tablets, though some are seeing a litany of server errors when trying to actually use the service. That said, we didn't see any issues here at Engadget HQ, so it's possible that a few kinks are still being worked out on select servers. Google's Chrome browser v13 enters beta
Chrome, Google's free multi-platform web browser, has added the ability to preview pages in the print dialog to see how they will look -- more than three and a half years after the feature was first requested. Version 13 has just entered the beta-testing phase for Mac, Windows and Linux and also adds Instant Pages, which pre-fetches Google search results before users click on them to speed page loading.

10.6.8 build 10K540 seeded to developers
The latest build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 has been seeded to developers. This build lists no known issues, and it has the exact same focus areas as an earlier build: AirPort, Networking, Graphics Drivers, the Mac App Store, QuickTime, and VPN.
There's no indication of when 10.6.8 will see public release, but with OS X Lion due next month, it's likely it will be one of the last major updates to Snow Leopard.

Intuit's Patzer hints Apple might license Rosetta
Though Apple has made no formal announcement, Lion as it stands will ship without Rosetta, the transitional libraries that allowed Carbon-based PowerPC apps to continue to work with Intel Macs running Snow Leopard. Older apps that have never updated to the Cocoa frameworks, such as AppleWorks, will finally cease to function in the new operating system. Intuit's Aaron Patzer has hinted that Rosetta might possibly live on, The Mac Observer reports.

Study: 24.5% of online video is Netflix, iTunes 9.8 percent
A new study by Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney reinforced Netflix's dominance of online video. The online check had Netflix representing 24.5 percent of online video, ahead of Hulu (22.5 percent) and just short of Facebook (27.1 percent). iTunes was the top pay-per-show provider but was well short in use at just 9.8 percent of those asked online.

A man whose impact on the world is nearly unfathomable died Sunday. Alan L. Haberman, supermarket-executive-turned-barcode-champion, died in Newton Massachusetts from complications of heart and lung disease at the age of 81. While he did not invent those ubiquitous black and white stripes -- that honor belongs to Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver -- Haberman did lead the campaign to make barcodes the universal standard for electronic product encoding. DeepShot app passes tasks from computer to mobile and back
A grad student at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab along with a Google employee have developed a system called DeepShot, CNet reports, that makes transferring tasks from desktop or laptop computers to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets easier, using both transmitted URI information along with the mobile device's camera to take a picture of the task state, enabling a task begun on a computer to be transferred to a phone, and vice versa.

Blackberry Bold 9900 coming to Three UK in August
We got the lowdown last month on the Blackberry Bold 9900: 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 640 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and looks that say "it's business time." Back then RIM said we could snag a svelte new Bold sometime this summer. Then came word that the handset wouldn't be available until September.
