Razer totes Hydra sticks and 6400dpi dual-sensor mice to E3 2011, we go hands-on
Razer's Sixense electromagnetic orb threw around plenty of intradimensional portals at CES, but sadly the company wouldn't let us play. Today at E3 2011, however, we were finally handed the reins. Those twin sticks are impressively responsive and accurate in the specially-made Sixense levels for Portal 2, and it's a heck of a lot of fun to physically stretch out blocks, reposition portals with a twist of the wrist and physically throw objects through the air. HP TouchPad to be available June 22nd, starting at $500 for 16GB?
We've learned to take possible TouchPad release dates with a grain of salt at this point, but enterprise vendor Synnex has now provided yet another possible one, as well some additional confirmation of earlier leaks. Screenshots depict Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5
Pre-release screenshots depict Motion 5 and other aspects of Final Cut Pro X, according to an AppleInsider tip. The software is due to ship later this month for $299, but Apple has remained extremely quiet about the software; even Apple's official Final Cut page has no hint of the upcoming product. Some of the leaked screenshots show a new "rig" function in Motion, though what exactly this entails hasn't been made clear.

iOS 5 to sell text alert tones through iTunes
The beta version of iOS 5 includes a new feature that lets you buy ringtones for alert messages, and is just one of the 200 new features that are to debut in the new operating system.
The ringtone option is found in the settings menu under the sounds. Users select any of the available alerts like Text Tone, New Voicemail, or New Mail to see a list of available sounds. You can choose from any of the default sounds as well as "Buy More Tones." Clicking on the "Buy More Tones" button in iOS 5 launches the Ringtones Store within iTunes.

Reported Motion 5, Final Cut Pro X screen shots
Earlier today Twitter user BWilks2001 posted screenshots of what is allegedly Motion 5. Motion is part of the Final Cut Studio suite and while Apple previewed Final Cut Pro X in April, it has not shown off any of the other apps from the suite -- even though Apple has said the next Final Cut Studio suite will be available for US$299 in the Mac App Store by the end of June. As for those other apps, all Apple said was "stay tuned."

Dear Aunt TUAW,
Do you know if there exists a nice program or plug-in for safari which decreases the iTunes volume/pauses the current played song, when I am going to watch a YouTube movie?
Each time I click a YouTube movie on Facebook, etc. I just find it really frustrating to go to iTunes, pause the current song and go back to watch the movie and then restart the current song in iTunes again when the YouTube clip is finished. I want it to work in a similar fashion as on the iPhone.

Steve Jobs stellt dem Cupertino City Council Ideen für neuen Apple „Mothership“ Campus vor
Vor einigen Monaten hatte Apple ein großes Stück Land von HP gekauft. Bisher war der Nutzen dieser riesigen Fläche eher begrenzt - Doch nun soll sich das ändern. Vor dem Cupertino City Council, also dem lokalen Stadtrat, stellte Steve Jobs gestern Apple’s Pläne vor: Dort soll ein großes Gebäude entstehen, dass 12.000 Leute fassen wird. Steve nannte es „ein Raumschiff“ und meinte, Apple wird die von den vielen Apple Stores gesammelte Erfahrung beim Bau desselben anwenden. Eine Tiefgarage darunter ist auch in Planung. Möglicherweise wird das Gebäude dann für Events wie die WWDC genutzt - immerhin kann eine einzige Cafeteria dort 3.000 Personen gleichzeitig beherbergen, zusätzlich gibt es ein großes Auditorium.

Google rolls out 'safer and snazzier' Chrome 12 web browser
The latest version of a Chrome browser may not be quite the event it once was since Google switched to a six-week release schedule, but the company seems to be plenty pleased with the just-released Chrome 12 nonetheless, which it's dubbed "safer and snazzier." That's because the browser now boasts a number of new measures to prevent malware and phishing attempts (and give you more control over data stored on your computer), as well as support for hardware accelerated 3D CSS, which will let you try out things like Aardman Studio's "Shaun the Sheep" HTML5 experiment pictured above (and linked below). And if you're reading this in Chrome, chances are your browser has already updated itself.

FaceTime to support 3G connections in iOS 5?
The iOS 5 version of FaceTime will finally allow video calls over 3G, rumors suggest. Sources indicate that the functionality is simply turned off in developer builds, and that an error message currently urges people to "Turn on cellular data or use Wi-Fi to use FaceTime." It's believed that support will ultimately be dependent on carriers, who can already block things like tethering.

How to install Lion from an SD card
After we linked to instructions for how to burn a Lion boot disc earlier this week, Nature's Eye Studios contacted MacStories to let them know they figured out how to get the new OS to boot off a SD card. After downloading Lion from the developer site, the video maker proceeds to wipe a SD card and use the repair option with the Lion disk image as the source to create the boot. Once you've created the backup, you can use the SD card as a Lion installer if needed, then pull a backup from Time Capsule.

Use Keynote Remote for iPhone to control Keynote on iPad
Here's a very welcome change to Keynote on iOS. The latest update lets you use the Keynote Remote app for iPhone as a remote for Keynote presentations on the iPad.

When I was in high school in the late 90s, classes such as home economics, shorthand and basic keyboarding were already a thing of the past. I could read my Japanese textbook much easier than my mother's shorthand book from the early 70s. She learned proper touch typing in school while I developed a very fast method of hunt-and-peck that got me up to 73 words-per-minute.

Apple now world's biggest OEM semiconductor buyer
Apple has become the largest OEM semiconductor buyer in the world, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. Data from 2010 shows that Apple bought parts worth $17.5 billion, up a massive 79.6 percent from the $9.7 billion the company spent in 2009. At the time Apple was already in third place, behind HP and Samsung, having risen from sixth place in 2008.

FaceTime in iOS 5 wohl auch über Mobilfunknetz

iPad 2 + Smart Cover = study aid with Evernote Peek
We tend to kvell about Evernote quite a bit around here, it's true; we've even interviewed CEO Phil Libin on at least four separate occasions. If only the company would stop doing cool things so we could quit harping on them!

How to get Windows 7's best features on Mac OS X
Lifehacker has a nice post that shows you how to add some Windows 7 features to your Mac OS X computer. One of the nicest hacks is the ability to show a preview of an app when it's in the dock just like Windows 7 does with its Aero interface. Buy a new Mac now, upgrade to Lion for free
Apple's Mac OS X Lion press release reveals that those who purchase a new Mac on or after June 6, 2011 will be able to receive a free copy of Mac OS X Lion. Apple's Up-To-Date program typically lets customers who buy new Macs within a certain time frame update to the latest OS at a reduced cost, typically US$9.95 for a disc. Google Maps Navigation to go offline this summer? Garmin and TomTom on notice
Dutch tech site All About Phones claims that Google Maps Navigation will get a true offline mode later this summer. Michigan lawsuit could render Lodsys patents invalid
A Michigan company, ForeSee Results, has submitted a declaratory judgment lawsuit which could potentially render four Lodsys patents invalid. The latter outfit has sent letters to a number of technology companies, asserting a need for patent licenses. Lodsys made headlines recently by suing some mobile app developers over in-app purchases. ForeSee has not been sued, but is rather taking preemptive action on behalf of clients which have received assertion letters.

iOS 5 immun: Essers untethered Jailbreak-Lücke wurde geschlossen!
Gestern erst gelang es dem Dev Team die erste iOS 5 Beta erfolgreich, zumindest mit einem tethered Jailbreak, zu modifizieren. Erste Jubelschreie scheinen jedoch nach dem Twittereintrag von Steffan Esser alias i0n1c zu verstumpfen. Schließlich habe Apple, so wie es derzeit aussieht, die Lücke geschlossen. Es kommt also wieder etwas Arbeit auf die Jailbreakschmieden zu.

iPad 2 panel shipments could break 10.5m this summer
This summer Apple iPad shipments may reach 10.5 million according to a report from Digitimes. Apple has reportedly tapped Chimei Innolux to boost their supply of panels for the iPad 2. CMI is is expected to produce up to 500,000 panels in June and may ramp up production to over one million in July. Between CMI, TPK Holding and Wintek, Apple should have an ample supply of panels to ship over 10.5 million iPads in the summer quarter.

Forscher um Hiroyuki Shinoda an der Universität von Tokyo haben jetzt eine neue Technologie entwickelt, die mithilfe von Ultraschallwellen dafür sorgt, dass man sie trotzdem spüren und mit ihnen interagieren kann. Zum Tracken der Hand haben sie dafür zwei Wiimotes benutzt. Gartner: PC growth slowing to 9.3% through iPad effect
PC sales won't grow as much as expected for 2011 in the wake of tablets like the iPad, Gartner said on Wednesday. Originally expecting the field to grow by 10.5 percent, it lowered the mark to 9.3 percent and a total of 385 million computers. The analyst group blamed it chiefly on the collapse of netbooks following the iPad's release. Tablets like Apple's weren't necessarily replacing all notebooks, but they often led people to stall getting a new portable PC.

iPad production effiency will improve, says Foxconn
Terry Gou, the chairman of Foxconn parent Hon Hai, says the company is taking steps to improve the efficiency of iPad production that will begin paying off in the second half of 2011. Samsung mum on rumor of bid to take over Nokia
Samsung in a statement Wednesday declined to comment on talk it might buy Nokia. Spokespeople for both companies would neither confirm nor deny talks and, in Samsung's case, characterized the mentions to Dow Jones as "market rumors." Details of the supposed bid weren't given out, but Samsung would likely be hoping to take advantage of Nokia's weakened state.

Chrome 12 update improves security, graphics acceleration
Google has released a new stable version of Chrome, v12.0.742.91, which makes several important enhancements. The browser will for instance now warn against downloading some malicious files, supposedly without Google or even Chrome knowing about associated URL or file history. The software also provides more control over data stored by websites, in particular Local Shared Objects used by Flash. These were previously only controllable via Adobe's website, but the company is said to have cooperated with Google on adding LSO deletion to Chrome.

Der Designer Karl-Johan Ekeroth hat eine interaktive Skulptur ausgetüftelt, die Kindern das Knöpfchendrehen an Synthesizern nahebringen soll: Mit jeder Bewegung und jedem Knopfdruck am Invoxicated getauften Spielzeug ändert sich auch der Sound, der aus den beiden Trichtern ertönt. Dazu werden Filter oder Effekte ein- und ausgeschaltet oder eben an der LFO-Frequenz gedreht. Nice. Microsoft rumored making own Windows 8 tablet to fight iPad
Microsoft may be hoping to more directly challenge Apple with a self-branded Windows 8 tablet, part suppliers asserted in a rumor on Tuesday. Users have discovered a method which allows non-developers to run the iOS 5 beta. Although it first involves downloading the iOS 5 IPSW from a website such as a torrent tracker, the technique is then dependent only on iTunes and exploiting a security vulnerability in the firmware. With an iPhone connected to iTunes, users must hit Option or Shift while clicking on the software's Check for Update button to select the iOS 5 firmware they've downloaded.

Looxcie has released a new wearable video camera, the Looxcie 2. The new version is almost 50 percent smaller than the original model. It also weighs 20 percent less, just 22 grams (0.75 ounces). iTunes fraud surge hits gift card balances, PayPal accounts
The frustration and questions surrounding iTunes App Store purchase fraud are (unfortunately) continuing. Over the past three weeks, we've received several first-hand reports of accounts with positive gift card balances being unexpectedly drained; often the charges are for in-app purchases for apps such as Section8's World War, Sega's Kingdom Conquest or Kamagames' Texas Poker. Hands-On: Logitechs Touch Lapdesk

Logitechs Lapdesk N600 ist eigentlich nur eine große, komfortable Unterlage fürs Notebook, die ein zusätzliches Multitouchpad mit großen Maustasten und ein paar Multimediatasten mitbringt. Hinten lässt es sich mit 4 AA-Batterien füttern, die bis zu sechs Monate durchhalten sollen. Das Multitouchpadlässt sich unter dem Lap Desk N600 hervorziehen, mit dem Rechner verbunden wird es über Logitechs Unifying Receiver. Taipeh verlangt 7-Tage-Umtauschrecht für Apps

Microsoft denkt über eigenes Tablet nach

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on sale at NYC Best Buy today, up for pre-order too
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is finally among us. At noon Eastern Time today, Best Buy's New York City store at Union Square will start selling Samsung's extra-slim 10-inch Tegra 2 tablet, with the first 200 buyers also receiving a matching leather pouch to store their precious inside of. Geographically challenged Android tablet lovers will also be able to pre-order the Tab 10.1 from Best Buy today (eventually, the pre-order button doesn't currently work) and widespread US availability is still expected on June 17th. Es kam schon sehr häufig vor, dass nach dem Update von OS X oder iOS Hinweise auf noch nicht erschienene Geräte im System zu finden waren. Apple schiebt iTunes 10.3.1 Update nach!
Was ist nun los? Vor zwei Tagen bekam iTunes doch erst ein 10.3 Update spendiert. Hands-On: Toshiba Thrive (Video)

Toshiba hat sich ja nicht gerade kopfüber in den Tablet-Markt gestürzt, kommt jetzt aber in den USA mit dem Thrive um die Ecke. Das 10,1-Zoll Tablet mit Android 3.1 kommt als erstes Tablet mit austauschbarer Batterie (die einzeln um die 90 Dollar kostet) und hat noch ein paar andere Besonderheiten auf Tasche: normaler USB-Anschluß, HDMI-Ports und ein SDHC / SDXC-Slot und auch der Startpreis von 429 Dollar ist nicht unattraktiv. iTunes 10.3.1 veröffentlicht
Gerade mal einen Tag ist es her, als Apple iTunes 10.3 veröffentlicht hat, da kommt bereits das Update fürs Update: iTunes 10.3.1 ist erschienen.
Was genau die neue Version behebt, ist unbekannt. Apple hält sich an der Stelle sehr bedeckt und schreibt denselben Text in das Changelog wie gestern bei iTunes 10.3.

Apple veröffentlicht iTunes 10.3.1
Nur gerade ein Tag nach der Veröffentlichung von iTunes 10.3 schickt Apple ein erstes Update auf Version 10.3.1 nach. Informationen, was sich mit 10.3.1 gegenüber der Vorgängerversion geändert hat, liefert Apple leider keine. Die Release-Notes liefern die genau gleichen Informationen wie bereits 10.3. Demzufolge dürfte es sich um einen kleinen aber wohl wichtigen Bug-Fix handeln. Wie MacRumors.com spekuliert, könnte das Update ein Problem beim Synchronisieren mit iOS-Geräten beheben — so wurden im Apple Support Forum von einigen Usern Probleme mit der Synchronisation von iOS-Geräten gemeldet («unbekannten Fehler (-50)»).
Das Update ist ca. 75 MB gross und kann über Apple.com oder die Software-Aktualisierung geladen werden.

Steve Jobs reveals Apple's new spaceship campus, calls it the 'best office building in the world' (video)
Shortly after taking the stage at WWDC, Steve Jobs made an appearance before the Cupertino City Council to pitch the local governing body on Apple's ambition to build a new campus. The site for the curvaceous, four-story, "human-scale" building to house 13,000 employees is the original home of HP's computer systems division, land that was recently sold to Apple. The property is currently covered by a series of big asphalt parking lots. Explosion in Produktionsanlage von Intel
Wie das Phoenix Business Journal berichtet, ereignete sich in einer Produktionsanlage von Intel in den USA eine Explosion, bei der vier Mitarbeiter verletzt und in Krankenhäuser eingeliefert wurden. Steve Jobs unveils new Apple campus that literally looks like a mothership
At a Cupertino City Council meeting last night, Steve Jobs presented plans for Apple's new campus off I-280 in Cupertino. As you can see from the image above, the campus resembles a spaceship. The entire campus will be one huge round building with a courtyard in the middle. The building itself will be four stories tall, and Apple plans to re-landscape the current area to include 6000 trees. A natural gas energy center will be on-campus to power the new building, and Apple will only rely on California's power grid as a backup.

Two completely separate surveys on different aspects of the tablet market paint a revealing picture, showing primarily that the market is in the early stages of growth, and that the playing field is changing. E3 Hands-on: Nintendos Wii-U-Controller

Auch für den Wii-Nachfolgr Wii U gilt bei Nintendo das Motto It´s the controller, stupid! Und dieser Hybrid aus mobiler Spiele-Konsole und klassischer Game-Steuerung scheint es wirklich in sich zu haben, wie unsere US-Kollegen berichten, die das Ding schon mal begrabbeln durften. Als erstes ist dabei der 6,2-Zoll-Touchscreen eine positive Überraschung in Sachen Display-Qualität, aber der Wii-U-Controller liegt auch angenehm und leicht in der Hand.

Steve Jobs hat am Montag noch die WWDC in San Francisco eröffnet. Am gestrigen «Tag danach» erhielt er eine Audienz vor dem Stadtrat von Cupertino, dort nämlich trug Steve Jobs einmal mehr die Ausbau Pläne von Apple in der Stadt in der San-Fancisco-Bayarea vor. Apple ist bereits seit jungen Jahren in Cupertino niedergelassen und ist mit 34’300 Angestellten in der Bayarea der grösste Arbeitgeber der Stadt. Das Hauptquartier ist seit 1993 an der Infinite-Loop-Strasse angesiedelt — doch Apple besitzt in Cupertino noch zahlreiche andere Gebäude, in der die verschiedenen Teams der Firma, die «wächst wie Unkraut», untergebracht sind. Alleine in der Stadt Cupertino beschäftige Apple damit 12’000 Angestellte — und ist der grösste Steuerzahler der Stadt.

iPad 2 panel shipments may go above 10.5m in summer
Apple is expecting a large surge in demand for the iPad 2 in the back-to-school period, leaked supply numbers hint. One of the tablet's panel makers, Chimei Innolux, is expected to ship 400,000 to 500,000 iPads in June but more than double that to crest over one million a month in July. Heute ist IPv6 Day
Am heutigen 8. Juni 2011 findet der weltweite «IPv6 Day» statt. Heute soll getestet werden, wie sich der bald anstehende Wechsel von IPv4 auf IPv6 wirklich auswirken wird. Es ist ein Weg in eine Sackgasse: der Adressbestand des 1981 eingeführten IPv4 begrenzt sich auf 4.3 Milliarden IP-Adressen. Mit der heutigen Zeit, in der immer mehr Geräte einen Internet-Anschluss erhalten, gehen diese 2^32 Adressen (also 4’294’967’296 Milliarden IP-Adressen) langsam aber sicher aus. Problemlöser wäre der Nachfolger IPv6, der 1998 Standardisiert wurde. IPv6 benutzt 128-bit Adressen, im Gegensatz zum 32-bit-Adressenbestand von IPv4 — damit sind mit IPv6 340 Sextillionen Adressen möglich (das sind 34 und 37 Nullen) und somit ‘vorläufig’ genug Adressen verfügbar. Eine IPv4-Adresse lautet zum Beispiel: «172.16.254.1», während eine IPv6-Adresse im folgenden Format daher kommt: «2001:db8:ffff:1:201:02ff:fe03:0405».

Sony unveils tiny NEX-C3, Alpha A35 mirrorless cameras
Sony after a long run-up upgraded the bases of both its NEX and Alpha camera lines. The NEX-C3 is cast as the smallest camera to have both an APS-C sized sensor and interchangeable lenses with an even smaller frame than the NEX-3. Despite the size shrink, it should be easier to use for newcomers: a Photo Creativity mode, much like Canon's Creative Auto, puts concepts like aperture or white balance into simpler terms without sacrificing the full PASM controls or programmable shortcuts.

Blast at Intel's Arizona plant injures seven, investigation under way
Yesterday afternoon, a blast occurred at Intel's Arizona plant just outside Phoenix, injuring seven people with one suffering from severe burns. According to Phoenix Business Journal, the incident took place in a solvent waste treatment room at Fab 22 -- not far from Fab 32 which will be manufacturing 22nm chips -- but Intel Vice President Josh Walden assured us that "there was no damage or release of chemicals to the community," and production has already resumed in both facilities. The 2011 Apple Design Award winners have been announced at WWDC. Although the Mac got left off the radar last year, in 2011 Apple's chosen to recognize greatness in all of its platforms. Winners get a MacBook Air, iPad 2, iPod touch, and a snazzy trophy. They also get heaps of free coverage from sites like us, which means all of these apps can likely look forward to massive upticks in sales over the next week.

HTC Sensation goes to FCC for a second helping, flavored with AT&T bands

Nintendo Wii U hands-on: not an iPad rival yet
We managed to get some extensive hands-on time with the Nintendo Wii U at E3 to get a feel for how well it works and whether any claims that it might be an iPad rival are well-founded. Our first impression is that it's much more manageable to hold than it looks: the controller is light and easy to steer if you're using a motion-sensitive game. The layout was clearly designed to be comfortable for both buttons and touch, and we had no problem with games that needed either the analog sticks or the touchscreen.

Kinect Graffiti creates neon tags with the wave of a hand (video)

Infinity Blade creators say they've cleared $10M
This is when you start wondering if you're in the wrong line of work. In only six months the popular iOS game Infinity Blade exceeded US$10 million in earnings, according to an Epic Games press release posted today.

Hyperkin SupaBoy portable SNES console hands-on (video)
Sure, all the morning's news may have been surrounding a vowel-augmented console from Nintendo, the Wii U, but a certain other Nintendo console that has fewer vowels is also seeing some well-deserved love here at E3 2011. Inside Apple's move to open up SMS-style messaging to non-mobile clients
Apple unveiled a new iMessaging app that brings SMS-style messaging to iOS devices that lack a mobile data connection, such as WiFi-only iPads and the iPod touch. Hands-on: OnLive's Universal Wireless Controller
We had the opportunity at E3 to try OnLive's new Universal Wireless Controller well before it ships. The gamepad, although it's meant for anything ranging from an iPad through to a Mac or PC, feels very much like an Xbox 360 controller in the hand -- that's a good thing, as it's very comfortable. Buttons and sticks all fall easily within reach, and we liked the media controls for Brag Clips (replay videos) as a way of keeping it keyboard-free.

OnLive Player app for iPad and Android tablets meets the public at E3
We already got a chance to try out OnLive on the HTC Flyer early but now the company has made its plans official at E3, announcing a Player app will bring internet-streamed gaming to the iPad and Android tablets this Autumn. Just as we saw, the apps allow for tablets to be used as the screen and touch / motion controller, touch / motion controller for games on an HDTV, or screen for games being played with the new universal wireless gamepad. The fun isn't limited to just tablets though, the app will work the same way on smaller Android and iOS mobile devices. We'll head over to South

Apple posts WWDC keynote video [U]
[Update: A downloadable version of the keynote is now available via iTunes] Apple has posted a streaming video of the keynote presentation delivered yesterday morning at the Worldwide Developer's Conference in San Francisco. The keynote, which features CEO Steve Jobs as well as other members of the Apple executive team, runs just under two hours and features noticeably improved streaming video quality, perhaps a reflection of Apple's upgraded server centers.

Apple's steps toward backup in the cloud tread lightly on third party developers

Analysts positive on WWDC iCloud, iOS 5, Lion announcements
Apple's WWDC Keynote, announcing iCloud, iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion, has sparked positive reaction from numerous Apple-focused financial analysts, with raised target prices between $460 and $510 per share. The analysts predicted increased sales of the iPad 2, acceptance of Apple's iCloud and iTunes Match service and the popularity of iOS 5 on refreshed hardware in the fall as part of the reason for their enthusiasm for Apple going into the remainder of the year.

Third-gen iPad with world 3G buried in iOS 5 code
A delve into the device profiles for iOS 5 has shown at least two new iPads in the works. iPad 3,1 and 3,2 have both been found and conspicuously weren't accompanied by a 3,3, suggesting to TUAW that the third-run iPad will be cut down to two models. Apple is already known to be working on a dual-mode iPhone that would do the same and would most likely want to follow suit with the iPad to consolidate its tablets down to just Wi-Fi and universal 3G versions.
