Digital Chocolate picks up $12 million in funding round, mostly from Intel
Digital Chocolate is one of the biggest iPhone developers that no one talks about much, but maybe that'll change now that the company has picked up a whopping $12 million in venture capital. Windows Phone to face off vs. rivals with 'real time trials'
Microsoft is planning an online ad campaign that would pit Windows Phone 7 against rivals in a speed showdown, a leak of draft spec commercials (below) has uncovered. Each of the Flash-based segments, known as "Real Time Trials," will show how much quicker a WP7 device can accomplish a given task versus a rival phone, such as posting a photo to Facebook or letting those in a meeting know you'll be late. The "your phone" outlines are placeholders, WinRumors said, and would likely be filled in by a video of a competing smartphone doing the same thing more slowly.

Netflix signs up some TV shows from CBS' library for Watch Instantly streaming
Let's be honest, as much as we all like to play film snob, we're thinking more of you watch Family Ties, Star Trek and Cheers than the works of Bergman and Kurosawa. As long as that's the case, perhaps the pain of losing Criterion's content to Hulu Plus will be eased by word of a new deal with CBS bringing a slew of its older shows including the aforementioned plus Twin Peaks, The Twilight Zone and newer-but-not-new shows like Medium to the service for two years starting in early April. iBikeDash Cycling Computer app out for iPhone, iPod touch
Velocomp has just released its latest product, the iBikeDash. The cycling computer requires an iPhone or iPod touch, as it's largely an app (free, App Store) but also includes a Phone Booth housing for the Apple device that keeps it out of the worst the environment has to offer. It's also shockproof and is bundled with an ANT+ speed sensor with optional sensors for cadence and heart rate.

RIM complains Apple, Google exploiting India security woes
RIM in remarks to its corporate customers said it was being unfairly singled out as part of Indian government scrutiny over access to e-mail. The Canadian firm argued that Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia and others were using the standoff over government demands to snoop on e-mail as a way of drumming up market share. It implied that Android and iPhone were getting converts from those worried the BlackBerry might be unusable in the country.

Motorola may only be offering the Xoom in basic black to the general public, but it's cooked up something a little extra special for the Oscars this Sunday. CBS finally bends, brings some shows to Netflix
CBS today showed a rare willingness to bring its TV shows to a subscription Internet service today and gave Netflix some key content. Classic shows such as Cheers, Star Trek and Twin Peaks will now be viewable through a streaming plan, as will two newer shows, Flashpoint and Medium. The non-exclusive deal lasts for two years and has an option for a two-year renewal.

Dell rolls out updated XPS 15, XPS 17 laptops
Well, it's not the promised thinner and lighter replacement for the XPS 14, but Dell has just announced two other new XPS laptops: updated versions of it XPS 15 and XPS 17. Apple sets sights on new Los Angeles, Anchorage stores
News has emerged of two upcoming US Apple Stores. The first is another within the general Los Angeles area, but specifically located 35 miles north in the Valencia Town Center shopping mall. The center is reported to have undergone a $140 million renovation in 2010, creating 40 new open-air spaces. Construction and hiring timetables are believed to point to Apple opening the outlet by mid-September.

Adobe promises Flash Player 10.2 for Honeycomb tablets 'in a few weeks,' Xoom gets namechecked
We found out yesterday that Motorola's Xoom would be shipping sans Flash support on Verizon Wireless, and while Big Red claimed that an update would be doled out this spring, the folks at Adobe are pointing to a far more specific time frame. Wintek workers still experience effects from n-hexane exposure, Apple issues a report
It's been a few months since we checked in on the workers at Wintek, where they manufacture touchscreens for the likes of Apple. As you might remember, the former company was facing a lawsuit for chemical poisoning that occurred between May 2008 to August 2009 when the company substituted alcohol for n-hexane in the manufacturing process. Both Apple and Wintek maintain that ultimately a total of 137 people had been hospitalized, and all have recovered -- but as Reuters points out, daily exposure to the chemical has been known to cause "long-term and possibly irreversible nerve damage," and Wintek

Apple turns to compettive bidding for outside repairs
Apple has switched to a new system for Genius Bar referrals to outside repair consultants, a TUAW report says. Previously Genius Bar workers would turn to consultants certified through the Apple Consultants Network, who were also often interviewed by store managers. Now the company is said to be using a third-party repair firm, OnForce, as a middleman.

Memory of Colors is a coffee table book on an iPad
Memory of Colors is a photographic celebration of the diversity of man in a wide variety of colors. It's the result of a 12 year project by photographer Jaime Ocampo-Rangel as he visited 18 countries to photograph the diversity of people. The app, which was released today, is a stunning series of portraits, with information on the countries and customs of the people pictured via Wikipedia.
In today's digital and connected world, diversity is under threat, so hopefully these pictures won't be a catalog of people from our past.

Square drops fixed fee to drive more iOS, Android payments
Square today said it was dropping a fixed fee for payments from its Android and iOS apps. The startup will no longer ask 15 cents for a credit card swipe from one of its readers regardless of how much the user pays. The move will still include a 2.75 percent transaction fee but should be much less of a hit on shopkeepers and other users for very inexpensive purchases, such as food.

News: Wintek workers write to Apple over health concerns
A group of workers from Wintek, an Apple manufacturing partner, suffering from symptoms related to n-hexane exposure has written a letter to Apple asking it to address their concerns. The next iPad is due to show at an event in just over a week, insiders claimed Tuesday. A special event in San Francisco is "firm" for March 2. Poisoned Wintek workers appeal to Steve Jobs
Five workers claiming to represent poisoned Wintek workers have issued a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Reuters reports. Wintek has admitted to using a chemical called hexyl hydride, also known as n-hexane, to help speed up production of Apple touchscreens between May 2008 and August 2009. N-hexane evaporates faster than alcohol, which Wintek has since returned to as a cleaning agent. Before it cut off n-hexane however a number of Wintek workers complained about serious health issues; Apple and Wintek have admitted to 137 hospitalizations.

Counter-leaks: next iPad isn't delayed
A pair of leaks emerged on mid-Tuesday that promptly countered beliefs that the next iPad might be delayed. Sources for both Reuters and Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzesinsisted that the new Apple tablet was still on track. While the news outlet couldn't obtain more, Reitzes noted that Foxconn's parent company Hon Hai was expected to ship new iPads to customers in early April, about two million of which would reach customers that month.

Apple reportedly schedules all-hands retail meeting for this week
If you work in an Apple Store, you're either about to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for an all-hands retail meeting later this week, or you already have. The meetings are generally held Sunday evenings after the stores close.
While nobody is quite sure what the all-hands meeting will be about, it's unlikely that it will focus on the new MacBook Pro models that are expected to appear on Thursday unless the new laptops are actually going to show up next week. Rumor: iPhone 5 to land in September
In a research note, analyst Craig Berger of FBR Capital markets makes the bold claim that the iPhone 5 will not launch until September. Berger writes,
"we think a September launch is more likely, off from Apple's traditional iPhone launch schedule, but giving the firm more time to enhance its next-generation instant communications on the phone."
To back up this claim, Berger cites reports from Asian parts suppliers which are still ramping up their production of casings and touch panels for the iPhone 5. Apple and others are considering upgrading the audio on tracks a second time to get close to master-level audio quality, sources both public and otherwise said on Tuesday. Label heads are negotiating to bring the underlying bit depth from 16-bit to 24-bit. Yuanta Securities analysts claim iPad 2 will be delayed until June
The iPad 2 may be delayed due to "production bottlenecks" at manufacturing company Hon Hai Precision, parent company of Foxconn. This delay is partially the result of unspecified changes in the iPad 2 design made by Apple before the Lunar New Year on February 3, according to a report from Yuanta Securities analysts Vincent Chen and Alison Chen.
"Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production and it is taking time to resolve them," writes Chen. "As a number of Android 3.0 tablets are being launched in April and May, the delay in iPad 2 shipments may give the Android camp a brief window of opportunity."

Apple joining effort to build $2 billion hospital
Apple has joined up with other computer firms, including eBay, HP and Intel, in an effort to build a brand new hospital in Stanford, near Palo Alto, CA. The hospital is expected to cost over US$2 billion, and $550 million of that will be donated and raised by the corporate partners program, which Apple has signed on to as a member. Wintek purportedly making white iPhone 5 touch panels
Despite the white iPhone 4 not having yet appeared, claims have surfaced on Tuesday that Apple is committing to a specific touch panel supplier for a white iPhone 5. Taiwan's Economic Daily News claimed that Wintek will be the only company supplying the touch layer for the future phone. Apple is "pushing" the white hue this year after having almost entirely missed out on it for the iPhone 4, the trade paper said.

Apple opening store in Anchorage, Alaska
Apple will open its most northerly store in Anchorage, Alaska, later this year according to ifoAppleStore. It will be nearly 300 miles north of the current most northerly store in Aberdeen, Scotland, and within driving distance of the Arctic Circle. Verizon dropped 10,000 emergency calls during January snowstorm in Maryland, FCC finds it 'alarming'

An outage during a snowstorm last month has reportedly resulted in a whopping 10,000 calls to 911 not being connected by the big red carrier. Refreshed iMac may launch alongside new MacBook Pro
A new report from Digitimes suggests that Apple may refresh its iMac line alongside the Macbook Pro, possibly as soon as this week. As previously reported, the new iMac line is said to sport a new panel size purportedly due to a revised manufacturing process. Adobe verspricht Flash für Honeycomb und Xoom in ein paar Wochen

Wer seinen Flug nach Amerika gebucht hat um sich ein Motorola Xoom zu holen, das erste Honeycomb Tablet auf dem Markt, der wird beruhigt sein zu hören, dass Flash nicht so weit hin ist. Adobe selbst hat jetzt angekündigt, Flash für Android 3 innerhalb der nächsten Wochen fertig zu haben. 20 Millionen Smartphones haben jetzt schon Flash und für 2011 wollen sie Flash insgesamt auf 132 Millionen "devices" installiert haben. Erinnert ihr euch noch an diese Maus mit dem genetisch angewachsenen Nachwuchsohr auf dem Rücken? Das waren Zeiten. Aber mit dem Ohr scheint es immer anzufangen. An der Cornell Universität werden jetzt schon mal 3D Printer benutzt um Körperteile in Silikon zu drucken statt wie üblich in Plastik. In zwanzig Jahren soll es so weit sein, dass man seine - hoffentlich vorher eingescannten - Körperteile nachdrucken kann. Herzklappen sind als nächstes dran. Samsung apparently decided it's made Epic 4G owners wait long enough and beat Sprint's planned OTA release schedule to the punch, posting the EB13 build that will update their phones to Froyo on its support website. Adobe: Xoom, other tablets get Flash 10.2 in 'a few weeks'
Adobe in an update tried to assuage fears surrounding the delay of Flash for the Motorola Xoom. It now expects the Xoom and other Android 3.0 tablets to get Flash 10.2 within "a few weeks" of the OS being available. This should one day soon open the door to the creating functional human body parts using DNA-injected 'ink.' The team at the Computational Synthesis Laboratory, led by Hod Lipson, are now testing the printer as a way to crank out synthetic heart valves. Mac 101: Quick navigation of browser tabs
If you ever use the tabs in your web browser, you may have a hard time navigating between them as you take your hand off the keyboard, put it on your mouse, click on the tab you're looking for, look at that page for a moment, and then click back on the first tab again. As a person who has loads of tabs open all the time for researching all kinds of things, going back and forth like this is pretty inefficient.
Luckily, the three major browsers for the Mac (that is Firefox, Safari, and Chrome) offer a very handy method for going from tab to tab: Pressing Command and any of the number keys will take you to that tab. So Command-3 will take you to the third tab across, Command-9 to the ninth, etc. This makes it easy to go from tab 2 t

New high-res imaging could make biopsies obsolete, doctors still cutting up in meantime
So maybe a true-to-life Innerspace is still a few years off, but a professor at the University of Rochester has developed a way to take high-resolution 3D images under the skin's surface, potentially eliminating the need for biopsies in cancer detection. Apple patent features sound-driven commands
A new patent by Apple reveals that the company has been working on gesture-based commands determined with audio transducers on the corners of a given surface -- in other words, as your fingers press and tap on a surface (like a keyboard or a computer casing or even the bezel around an iPad), the audio receivers would determine where and how you touched it, driving a user interface. The patent outlines a few different ways this could be done, from listening in to the housing itself or just keeping an electronic ear out for the sounds of touching the surface.

TinyGrab declines to sell subscriptions through the App Store
Add another name to the list of developers who are choosing to opt-out of Apple's subscription restrictions lately. Rhapsody and Readability were the first two we posted about, although Readability didn't so much as opt out as get rejected and decided not to play the subscription game. Will 10.7 add a "safe deposit box" to your Mac?
It seems as though Apple is hard at work on new features for OS X 10.7 Lion this summer, and the latest possible addition to the OS is something that would solve a huge problem plaguing the tech world today -- insecurity with remote file storage. Official Minecraft app, Final Fantasy 3 coming to iPhone and iPad
Two pieces of good news for iOS gamers. First up, we've seen an unofficial Minecraft app appear (and disappear) on the App Store before, but it looks like an official client is coming. Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson says that an official iOS client for the popular sandbox PC game will be out later this year. It won't bring in all of the features of the full version (which you can play as a beta for free, or buy to experience the full thing), but especially because it's official, it should be more than adequate to take care of your Minecraft fix while out and about.

Blockbuster to sell itself off for $290m in face of digital
Blockbuster said on Monday that it planned to auction itself off post-bankruptcy with an uncommon trick to guarantee a minimum price. The company is using a "stalking horse" bid from an investment fund coalition, Cobalt Video Holdco, to set a minimum bid of $290 million. The deal would see companies already investing in Blockbuster buy it out if there were no takers but would get a better deal from a third party.
