MacBook Pro rumors: SSD boot drive standard, bigger trackpad, lighter weight

Citing a source from within Apple, Boy Genius Report has some interesting tidbits on the imminent MacBook Pro update. According to BGR's source, the MacBook Pro's trackpad will be getting even larger than those in the current lineup, and the overall weight of the notebook has dropped by about half a pound. The most interesting bit is something that's been circling the rumor mill for a couple years. Supposedly, the new base model MacBook Pros will feature a small internal solid state hard drive (SSD), 8 to 16 GB in size, that houses OS X and all its associated system files as a "boot drive." New MacBook Pros may get SSD booting, huge trackpads

Apple's imminent MacBook Pro update could well take additional cues from the new MacBook Air, a late-breaking rumor asserted Monday afternoon. The portables wouldn't use SSD-only storage but would get an 8GB or 16GB boot drive for the OS regardless of what technology is used. Although BGR couldn't understand the information, the move would let the MacBook Pros get much of the quick boot and fast resume support of the Air without sacrificing speed.

MacTech Boot Camp gains four more dates across US

Based on a successful conference in November and a sellout of the Boot Camp in San Francisco in January, MacTech has scheduled four more Boot Camp dates for the spring and summer. The events are geared toward consultants and technicians who support home or small business customers. Some planned topics are marketing, handling clients and basic command line use. Apple Retail's alliance with OnForce: A bad deal for consultants, consumers?

Apple Retail is changing the way that non-warranty support calls currently handled by certified Apple consultants are assigned, and that's making some members of the Apple Consultants Network (ACN) unhappy. In the past, a consultant who had gone through Apple's rigorous certification process and paid the annual ACN program fees could be interviewed by local Apple Store managers to be added to a referral list. If an Apple customer had an issue that could not be handled in-store by the Genius Bar, the store would provide him or her with a random selection of business cards from local ACN members who were on the list, and the customer could set up an appointment with the ACN. AT&T doing limited provisioning of iPhone hotspot feature?

AT&T may be doing some extremely limited activation of personal hotspot support for the iPhone, according to AppleInsider. Even though the feature is officially limited to Verizon iPhones running iOS 4.2.6, a developer running iOS 4.3 beta 3 says he was able to get it running after he/she "mentioned Verizon a few times" in talks with AT&T. Previous Nokia design head Adam Greenfield explained on the weekend some of what he saw as the institutional failures at Nokia in the run-up to its Windows Phone 7 switch. iTunes obviously has a great deal of data about its sales; Apple is quite aware of the top sellers among its music, apps, movies, and podcasts. They also make that information available through RSS feeds. If you want to share that data on your website, or even if you just want it in your RSS reader, then you can use the official iTunes RSS Generator to get the right feed. Minecraft en route to iPhone, iPad

Mojang is working on an iPhone and iPad version of Minecraft, according to the developer's founder, Markus "Notch" Persson. The port is being coded by a new addition to Mojang, Aron Neiminen, and should be released later this year. Amazon hits at iPad's readability again in new TV ad

Amazon took its second opportunity to skewer the iPad's readability in as many ads with a new TV commercial for the Kindle (below). The 30-second ad was mostly positive but points to the Apple tablet's glossy LCD as a weakness. The e-paper on the Kindle reader has "no glare" to interfere with the reading and can be read in bright sunlight, the ad said without a voiceover.

AT&T's HTC Inspire 4G can do HSUPA, has it disabled for some mysterious reason

There's a story going around the past couple days that HTC's Inspire 4G for AT&T -- a phone that you would assume to be wicked fast on both uploads and downloads in light of the name -- doesn't support HSUPA, a critical element to offering reasonable uplink speeds. Turns out it's not quite that simple. US Navy's free-electron laser breaks another record, takes aim at missiles next

Cruising through the mass of stuff to read on the internet this morning, I hit this headline on Slate.com: "I Hate My iPad." The article, by John Swansburg, said that he felt he didn't improve his life with his $600 investment. In fact, he said that spending his money on a salad spinner would have been more productive. Pow! Zing! Digging a little deeper, the author admits the iPad is nice for browsing the web, but he likes the Kindle more for reading books because of the sharp e-ink screen. iOS 4.3 beta users able to use wireless hotspot on AT&T

An isolated report suggests AT&T is beginning to provision its system to support personal hotspot on iPhones running iOS 4.3. According to AppleInsider, a developer with a beta build of iOS was able to setup his AT&T account with this upcoming feature. He reportedly mentioned Verizon a few times to help convince the representative to activate it on his account. Verizon Wireless currently offers the personal hotspot on the iPhone 4 for $20 per month on top of a $30 per month unlimited data plan. Sony's delayed entry into tablets should include more than just one model, sources said Monday. A second Android 3.0 model, the S2, would take advantage of Sony's dual-screen patent to create a unique ovoid, book-like model with two 5.5-inch displays. Lenovo is growing quickly enough to be a challenger to Apple's long-held dominance in all-in-one computers, a mixture of unofficial sources and estimates claimed on Monday. Umsatz mit Musik-Downloads wuchs 2010 in Deutschland um 35 Prozent

Der Branchenverband Bitkom hat aktuelle Daten zum deutschen Markt für Musik-Downloads veröffentlicht. Demnach wurde im vergangenen Jahr mit Musik-Downloads ein Umsatz von 151 Millionen Euro generiert, was im Vergleich zu 2009 einer Steigerung um 35 Prozent entspricht. Apple delays all MacBook Pro US orders by 3-5 days

Apple late Sunday virtually confirmed its impending MacBook Pro update through shipping delays on the US Apple Store. All MacBook Pro models now won't ship for 3-5 business days where they had normally been shipping in 24 hours. Samsung preps smartphone memory with 8X wider bandwidth

Samsung late Sunday said it had developed a new type of mobile memory with ultra-wide bandwidth for smartphones and tablets. The LPDDR2 (Low Power Double Data Rate 2) RAM increases the bandwidth simply by increasing the number of pins on the chip 16 times larger from 32 to 512. The effect gives it eight times higher memory performance compared to regular mobile DDR memory, from just 1.6GB per second to 12.8GB, and is still four times wider than everyday LPDDR2.
