HTC Incredible S auto-rotating buttons explained? (video)
We were quite bedazzled by the HTC Incredible S after our hands-on at MWC, but it's the auto-rotating icons for the capacitive buttons that left us most intrigued. So we went back to the HTC booth to try to make sense of it all. From what we were able to observe, there's some optical trickery happening here: the icons appear to be glittering and shimmering depending on viewing angle as if lit through a prism, half-mirror or grate of some kind. Google Docs addes support for Pages, Photoshop, AutoCAD
Google on Friday gave Google Docs its first real file format update with 12 new standards. The release supports an Apple-specific format for the first time and will let users read Pages documents in-browser. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop images also now work, and modelling gets its first support through recognition of Autodesk's AutoCAD.

Director DJ Caruso on using iPads to make I Am Number Four
Here's yet another example of the iPad excelling in a place it was never intended to actually go: Making movies. Director DJ Caruso did an interview in an Apple Store recently, and he says that he used the iPad to help make his new movie "I am Number Four" in all kinds of ways, from controlling on-set lights with an app to seeing scripts, marking up storyboards, and even scouting out locations. Caruso says the initial purchase was more for fun, but as he used the iPad more and more, he found he was doing a lot of his filmmaking work on it as well. CopyPaste Pro 3.0 adds clipboard search, Clip Revolver
Multiple-clipboard software CopyPaste Pro has been updated to version 3.0. The software, from Plum Amazing, allows users to have multiple clipboard options, including a history and a permanent archive of clippings. Version 3.0 adds a new clip format and a search feature for both the history and archives. An old feature, called Clip Revolver, is back in v3.0, which allows the user an option to paste over the most recent clipboard.

Motorola: 28 percent of 2010 revenue came from Verizon
Think the Atrix 4G might be a critical launch for Motorola right now? A fresh regulatory filing by Motorola today revealed that the company got a whopping 28 percent of its cash from Verizon last year -- up from 17 percent in 2009 -- a pretty powerful testament to the "Droid effect." The company goes on to say that "the loss of, or a significant reduction in revenue from, one or more of these customers could have a negative impact on [its] business," and it's pretty clear that the launch of the iPhone on Verizon will have at least some impact this year. Question is, can they make up for the loss with a harder push on other carriers like AT&T?

UberTwitter and Twidroyd already fixed, promised back soon
In an unusually quick turnaround, UberMedia chief Bill Gross said Friday afternoon that his company had already made the changes to UberTwitter and Twidroyd needed to put an end to the practices that led to the Twitter ban. UberTwitter is now expected to become UberSocial, while both apps will avoid manipulating users' own updates and should resolve the privacy problems with direct messages that break the usual 140-character limit.

MacBook Pros may be in for an imminent refresh, about time too
Welcome back to our annual tradition of speculating on just when and how Apple will freshen up its laptop range. AppleInsider is citing multiple sources today in support of its assertion that the MacBook Pro line will be getting upgraded by Apple, potentially as soon as next week. Terminally Geeky: Deadline reminders using Growl, sleepwatcher, and GNU date
When I have a large deadline looming, I like to keep track of how many days I have left.
I've tried Dashboard widgets, iPad apps, and just about anything else you could think of, but they all have failed for one simple reason: they require me to check them. I can go days or weeks without triggering the Dashboard, and an iOS countdown app still requires that you check it. I could use something like Due app but I really don't want something actively distracting me, I want something passively reminding me. Nor do I want these cluttering up my iCal.
I found my solution by cobbling together several bits of free Unix utilities that are essential to any true geek's tool belt.

Blue Microphones Yeti Pro review
USB microphones have come a long way in the past decade. We still remember our first experiences with them. Was it the 90's? It was the 90's, and it was a debacle: getting your drivers in line, wondering if the crappy plastic casing was going to snap off in your hand, and trying to figure out if you were going to be able to hear the audio through your Sound Blaster in the end anyway. Motorola reveals 28% of phone revenue from Verzion in 2010
Motorola in an SEC filing on Friday confirmed a heavy dependency on Verizon for its success. About 28 percent of all of Motorola's net revenue in 2010, including only the mobile group that split off this year, could be attributed solely to supplying Verizon with phones. The figure could almost exclusively be attributed to Android phones and was portrayed as leaving the company vulnerable if it lost some or all of Verizon's deal.

Myriad Alien Dalvik hands-on (video)
What if you could run Android apps on other platforms? That's exactly the question Benoit Shillings and his team at Myriad asked themselves before setting out to create Alien Dalvik. The resulting software provides a host environment for the (mostly Java-based) Android apps to run pretty much anywhere. Report: iAds surging against Android
In a new study from Medialets, Apple has grabbed the lead in mobile ad share from Android. There have been concerns that the Apple iOS ad system was faltering, but it seems to be getting a strong footing, at least for now.
Most of the Apple gains are on the iPhone and the iPod touch, but the iPad share is starting to move as well. On the Android side, 35 percent of ad traffic comes from 3 phones, the Motorola Droid, the HTC Evo 4G and the Motorola Droid X.

Motorola Atrix 4G pegged for February 21st pre-order delivery
Current pre-orders appear to be looking at early March delivery, but AT&T has gone on record saying that folks that elected to pre-order the mighty Motorola Atrix 4G by the 17th will receive it on the 21st of February -- next Monday -- and if they chose to have their unit sent to a store, they'll be able to get it there on the 21st as well. The rest of us will need to check out the store on the 22nd and hope for the best. We've gotten confirmation from a tipster that his pre-order has shipped with a scheduled delivery on Monday, so it's looking like they're on time. Who's standing in line next Tuesday?

Obama talked R&D with tech industry CEOs, appoints Intel's Paul Otellini to advisory council
Sure, there may have been some toasts and likely a bit of joking, but it looks like President Obama also got down to a bit of business during his meeting with some of the tech industry's top CEOs yesterday. While complete details are obviously light, White House press secretary Jay Carney has revealed that the president raised the issue of his recent proposals to invest in research and development with the group, and he's said to have also discussed ways to encourage kids to study math, science and engineering. Followup: Some mockups of a 4-inch iPhone screen
After reading about the math behind a 4-inch iPhone screen, readers said the comparisons between different screen aspect ratios would be a lot more helpful with additional mockups aside from the 16:9-screened iPhone we put up. After hacking and slashing my way through a photo editor, I've created a gallery of mockups using the existing iPhone 4 handset as a template. You'll see the current iPhone 4 compared against the same handset with a 4-inch screen in several formats, including its current 3:2 aspect ratio, the iPad's 4:3 format, the 16:10 ratio used in the MacBook and MacBook Pro and the 16:9 format from the "doing the math" post.

UberTwitter, Twidroyd blocked by Twitter for policy breaks
Twitter on Friday said it had blocked two of the largest Twitter apps, UberTwitter for BlackBerry/iPhone and Twidroyd for Android, for violating its policies. The apps, both written by UberMedia, reportedly violated rules around the use of the Twitter API. Either actively changed users' Twitter updates to make money and were also reportedly responsible for privacy issues with direct messages beyond 140 characters and even trademark infringement.

News: iOS leads European mobile phone OS market
iOS commands an impressive share of the mobile phone operating system market in Europe, according to a new report. Twitter suspends UberTwitter and Twidroyd for 'violating' its policies
Without elaborating, Twitter has just posted a help document titled "I'm Having Problems Logging In to UberTwitter or twidroyd" that gives little hope for an immediate fix: turns out the company has outright suspended both apps -- among the most popular Twitter apps for the BlackBerry / iPhone and Android platforms, respectively -- for "violating [its] policies." They go on to say that they suspend "hundreds" of apps on a daily basis for policy violations, but decided to call out these two in particular because of the high number of users potentially affected. Apple considering 6-inch iPad models?
Apple is developing one or possibly two 6-inch versions of the iPad, a report from Czech site SuperApple.cz suggests. One source describes a model just under the 6-inch mark, while a separate source makes the specific claim of a 5.7-inch tablet. First-generation iPads are all based on a 9.7-inch IPS touchscreen.

Acer's Aspire One D257 attempts to send ripples through MWC
Despite its wide variety of tablets, Acer's already told us of its plans to push forward with its Aspire One netbooks, and the new D257 is all the proof we need of that. At this point, we don't know much about the latest 10.1-inch netbook, except that it does have one funky lid. NVIDIA: every notebook will look like MacBook Air eventually

New Shanghai Apple Store will be China's largest
Apple intends to open a fifth Apple Store in China, and plans indicate it will be the country's largest. China Realtime Report has confirmed plans first revealed by Beijing Youth Daily (Google translation). Beijing Youth Daily interviewed Apple's senior vice-president of retail Ron Johnson, who confirmed that the store would open on Shanghai's Nanjing Road, possibly this summer.

Google, Best Buy, Sony and others form alliance to defend FCC's proposed 'AllVid' standard
We've already seen Sony, TiVo and others come out in support of the FCC's proposed CableCard replacement, known as AllVid, but it looks like they're now stepping up their game considerably. Alleged iPad 2 screen protector shows opening for camera
A FaceTime camera will be located top center on the front of the second-generation iPad, a screen protector from an accessory maker is said to show. Such placement takes after the fourth-generation iPod touch, as opposed to the iPhone 4, which places the front camera slightly to the side to cope with the presence of an earpiece. The protector would appear to back long-running claims of a front-facing camera on the next iPad; even the first-generation model is known to have space for one hidden in its frame.

Lenovo LePad worldwide in June, may be first 10in below $500
Lenovo's LePad tablet will ship outside of its home country in June for a price that could break the symbolic $500 mark, a representative said at the end of the week. PCWorld was told it would reach Lenovo's native China by late March but have a global release in June. The Android tablet would come in between $399 and $449, or as much as $100 below the iPad and possibly undercutting most other Wi-Fi only tablets.

Fifth Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta brings Safari into testing
Apple is seeding a fifth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers, known as build 10J858. The file is a 434.4MB delta, and according to Apple has no known issues. The company has, however, added Safari to the list of requested testing areas. Other components on the list include AirPort, Bonjour, SMB, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store.

Third Shanghai Apple Store to be China's biggest
A third Shanghai Apple Store will be biggest the company has built in China to date, an Apple spokeswoman says. The outlet is planned for the city's central Nanjing Road, and will become Apple's fifth in China. Senior retail VP Ron Johnson explains that the shop's size is needed to cope with intense traffic, as Chinese Apple Stores are visited by over 40,000 people per day. That level is roughly four times the American average.

MacBook Pro ship times lengthen, five SKUs said in works
Signs of an imminent MacBook Pro refersh grew clearer on Friday as Apple itself showed the first signs of delays. Online stores in southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and Vietnam, have delayed 13-inch MacBook Pros by two to four days. Both the base 15-inch MacBook Pro and the lone 17-inch model are now delayed by three to five days.

Major tech leaders photographed meeting with Obama
Several major technology executives have been officially photographed at a dinner meeting with President Obama on Thursday night. Chrome 10 enters beta with much faster engine, GPU support
Google late Thursday posted its first public beta of Chrome 10. The browser is the first to use the new Crankshaft engine for JavaScript and is as much as 66 percent faster in crunching JavaScript as today's Chrome 9. Hardware graphics acceleration is also new and, with a fast enough system, could see as much as 80 percent of the main processor's work offloaded to a GPU, extending the battery life on notebooks.

FTC and DOJ monitoring Apple's new subscription policy
Both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission are aware of the new policy Apple implemented for media companies with applications in the App Store. The new terms require media providers to sell their media through the App Store if they sell this content through another outlet.
A prime example is the Sony Reader app which was reportedly rejected from the App Store because it sold eBooks from its own digital store and not within its iOS application. This new policy takes effect June 30 and will drive many purchases through the

Zugegeben, der Name NES Paul ist natürlich super und hätte auch dem Namenspaten gefallen. China Telecom close to inking deal with Apple for the CDMA iPhone 4
In a research note, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White suggest China Telecom is close to completing a deal with Apple to carry the CDMA iPhone 4. White cites a report on Chinese website NetEase that claims one branch of the wireless operator is already accepting pre-orders for the CDMA iPhone 4. He also refers to a microblog post, reportedly from a China Telecom employee, proclaiming that the first CDMA iPhone call has been placed on its network.

Medialets: iOS ads surging back over Android
Medialets on Friday gave a minor surprise to the industry with a new study that showed iOS had retaken the lead from Android in mobile ad share. After trailing for September through November, the iPhone and iPad bounced back December to make up a much higher share of premium ad inventory for mobile apps. PowerVR 6 graphics promise 100X boost to future iPhones
Imagination Technologies in a low-profile step has given out the very first details of its next-generation PowerVR mobile graphics. The 6 series, nicknamed Rogue, is expected to be an exponential speed boost; it should be at least 20 and as much as 100 times faster than the SGX500 series graphics it would replace, the chip designer said. When the App Store first opened, Apple wasn't very keen on running emulators. Not only can they easily fall into a gray legal area, but allowing extra layers of code to run didn't seem safe to Apple at the time. Since then, however, Apple has loosened its policy, and now emulators of old consoles and hardware with official clearance are good to go. The TurboGrafx-16 Gamebox is one of those. It's an emulator of the old TurboGrafx-16 console, and since HudsonSoft designed it and most of the games, they're fully within their rights to sell the code on iOS. The app is free, and old school TG16 titles like Bonk's Adventure, Gradius and Bomberman '94 are available right there

Elle, Nylon and Pop Sci gladly adopt Apple's subscription terms
Not every publisher's feathers were ruffled by the changes Apple made to its subscription policy earlier this week. While Rhapsody may have responded negatively to the changes, some publishers are accepting the new terms and adopting Apple's new subscription model. Inline remote controls for iOS devices that work with your current headphones
Problem: You like the inline remote and microphone functions built into the headphones that come with the iPhone, but if you want to use another pair of headphones, you lose that functionality. Chevy MyLink rivals Sync with Pandora and phone links
Chevy tonight kicked off GM's own alternative to Ford Sync. MyLink is designed to pair up with smartphones and will stream audio and handle calls from smartphones over Bluetooth. New York DOT now adding 2-point driver's license penalty for talking on the phone while driving
It has been illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving in New York for years now, but the state has just steeply upped the penalties associated. The $100 fine which is currently imposed has been joined by a 2-point penalty on the driver's record -- which should serve as a real deterrent for most. FTC investigates Apple over new in-app subscription rules
The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission are reportedly looking into Apple's new in-app subscription rules, following public criticism from a number of companies and groups. The US agencies are said to be considering the possibility that Apple may be in violation of antitrust laws by tightening rules for developers that manage in-app purchases outside of Apple's own iTunes payment system.

Verizon makes Home Phone Connect service available nationwide

No iPhone nano, says New York Times
The New York Times has cast a pall over the iPhone nano rumors by stating that Apple will not release such a device (despite the Wall Street Journal's suggestion to the contrary). Referencing "people who have been briefed on Apple's plans," the NYT states that Apple is "not currently developing" a smaller phone. Instead, according to sources, Apple is working on the iPhone 4's successor, which many expect to hit shelves this summer.

RadioShack offers Atrix 4G for $150 on launch day, undercutting AT&T?
We'd heard rumors that Motorola's Atrix 4G would cost $150, but after AT&T priced the handset at $200 we figured they were all for naught. Skype consumer product management lead Rick Osterloh on Thursday hinted there would soon be an official video calling deal with AT&T. Apple dense lithium patent hints long-lived MacBooks, iPads
A new Apple patent filing published by the USPTO on Thursday could lead to significantly longer battery life in iPads, iPhones, MacBooks and other hardware with lithium-ion or lithium-ion packs. The use of a multi-step, constant-current, constant-voltage (CC-CV) would increase the capacity of the battery without physically increasing its size. Present-day batteries need to use longer anodes and cathodes to draw in more current and make the battery bigger.

Apple appears to be working on longer life batteries
Hallelujah! Who hasn't warily watched an iPhone, laptop or iPad battery indicator slows fading into oblivion? It looks like Apple is doing research into techniques that would keep lithium batteries running longer without making them larger.
AppleInsider found an Apple patent filing called "Increasing Energy Density in Rechargeable Lithium Battery Cells," that uses a method called "multi-step constant-current constant-voltage (CC-CV) charging technique." Sounds good to me if it works. Apple believes such a space saving battery could allow for more features in portable devices or better capacity.
The patents also describe new charging methods that would minimize the degrading of battery output over time

An anonymous Apple Store employee has come forward to Popular Mechanics with some experiences working in the retail chain, which normally imposes a veil of secrecy. The person foremost claims that workers are kept "completely in the dark" about new products until they're announced during a keynote, at which point employees may gather around to watch, or else use it as an excuse to take time off. On launch days Apple is said to pay large bonuses for long hours, and in some cases provide extras like food.
