White House releases economic report as e-book
Looking for a bit of light reading this weekend? Then look no further than the 400+ pages of the Economic Report of the President (the hotly anticipated sequel to the Economic Report of the President) which, for the first time, has been made available as a free e-book. That includes versions ready to be delivered to your Kindle or Nook (the former of which is already sitting at #46 on the bestseller list), and an ePub version for Sony readers and other devices. Will this be the final step that truly pushes e-books into the mainstream? Probably not. But if this rapid adoption of technology by the White House is any indication, we could well see weekly Presidential addresses in 3D next year.

Google may split Buzz from Gmail following outcry
Google Product Marketing VP Bradley Horowitz at the TED conference today said his company may already be planning to separate Google Buzz from its Gmail connections. The move isn't certain but would let users exist on Buzz without having to link it to a real e-mail address. A possible accompanying migration feature would also give the option of redirecting other Buzz users to a new Gmail-free name.

Omni Group plans several app ports for iPad
Touring Macworld 2010, MacNN has interviewed Omni Group CEO Ken Case about plans for the company's apps, including porting them to Apple's iPad. Case expects OmniFocus for the iPhone to be ported to the iPad at launch, though initially just as a resized iPhone app. Also coming to the iPad are OmniGraphSketcher, which focuses on sketching and graphing, and OmniGraffle, which diagrams visual objects and can be used for basic web design.

Dualscreen GScreen Spacebook reappears, will now have two 17-inch screens
Last time we saw the GScreen dualscreen Spacebook laptop it was sporting two 15.4-inch screens and promising to be ready by the end of 2009. Obviously the small Alaska-based company missed that cut off, but we're told there's a reason -- and it's an interesting one at that. Apparently the two 15-inch displays didn't provide enough screen real estate, and the company has now opted to use two 17.3-inch screens. We're not sure that move makes the most sense considering that this thing is supposed to be mobile, but we don't claim to know what people want from dual screen workstations. What does makes sense is that the laptop has been updated with new specs, including a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-620M processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 1GB NV

Redpark preps dial-up, serial adapters for iPhone, iPad
Peripheral firm Redpark at Macworld has promised the unique option of serial port (DB9) and dial-up (RJ11) adapters for Apple handhelds. The company's designs would give at least iPhone and iPod touch units support for legacy data through a Dock Connector adapter and is notably approved by Apple as a "reference design" that can be used by other companies. The iPad hasn't been tested for self-evident reasons but should also support the add-ons.

Garmin-Asus nuvifone M10 gets handled, reviewed in the wilds of Russia
We just heard about Garmin-Asus' WinMo 6.5.3-packin' M10 yesterday, and already the handset has been broken out for a photo shoot and hands-on review in Russia. The design itself isn't anything otherworldly, but we have to say -- we're kind of digging the user interface. Granted, we've a soft spot in our hearts for Garmin's nuvi line of PNDs, so anything remotely familiar gets a big thumbs-up 'round these parts. Bing adds streetside Flickr photos, live webcams
Microsoft as part of its efforts at the TED conference has launched a test version of Bing Streetside Photos for its map searches. The feature overlays geotagged, Creative Commons-licensed images from Flickr on to locations at the street-level view and provides alternative views of locations cued to Bing's own positioning. The shots can not only include those at night but those from an entirely different era.

Next Generation MacBook Pros to get USB3, WiDi, 3G?
Even with iPad-mania in full swing, we're still interested in seeing Apple's next generation MacBook Pros, which should be released on any given Tuesday. In a presumed effort to get its news out before the whirlwind that is Mobile World Congress officially begins, Marvell has just shot out two vital pieces of information that may very well impact the price and performance of your next smartphone. Boris intros Job Slate for Final Cut, free Comet plug-in
Boris has released a new plug-in for Final Cut Pro, Job Slate. The software is intended explicitly for commercial studios, and generates slates based on XML files from the Ad-ID management system. As a file is scanned, fields are filled out in the slate, where they can be tweaked in terms of font, style and layout. Preset or custom backdrops can be used.

Wall Street Journal: Windows Mobile 7 coming next week
We pretty much knew that Windows Mobile 7 is coming next week at MWC, but the Wall Street Journal has a piece up confirming the announcement, along with a few other interesting details. As we'd heard, the new UI is a riff on the Zune HD interface, and the OS "reflects a much tighter focus" on hardware / software integration, all based around a "small number" of hardware chassis specs -- pretty much what we've known, but it's interesting that the Journal's source says the plan is to "limit the wild variation" that's typically been the hallmark

Vodafone UK offers SIM-only option, caters to iPhone users
Vodafone UK ended its week by extending its SIM-only options for service with a unique spin for iPhone users. A new £25 ($39) monthly plan gives those with unlocked phones both 600 minutes as well as 1GB of data, unlimited messaging and free access to BT's Wi-Fi hotspots. The strategy lets iPhone users on "other networks" switch to Vodafone without necessarily taking a step backwards, Vodafone says.

MWC Barcelona: Skype coming to Verizon, Windows Mobile 7 announced.
What it means is all speculation at this point but Skype and Verizon are holding a joint press conference at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona next week. It isn't a huge stretch to say that they'll likely be announcing Skype access over Verizon's 3G.
Nobody has really picked up on this but here's an interesting point: Apple/AT&T's iPhone commercials have been jabbing Verizon because they can't do calls and data at the same time over 3G. Redpark announces serial and RJ-11 cables for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad
It's not like we spend much time with serial cables and RJ-11 jacks these days, but we do appreciate that they have their uses, especially among industrial customers and hobbyists -- so it's no surprise that the enterprising folks at Redpark have cooked up adapters for the iPhone / iPod touch (and, presumably, the iPad). T-Mobile promises to say more about the HTC HD2 next week
Nothing more to go on with this one than what you see above, unfortunately, but that message does come from T-Mobile USA's official Twitter account, and it pretty clearly indicates that the carrier will have something to say about the eagerly anticipated HTC HD2 sometime next week. That would certainly line up with the latest rumors we've hearing -- which pointed to a March launch -- but we'll just have to wait a few more days to see exactly what the carrier has planned for the mighty Windows Mobile phone.

Nanofiber lighting promises to be better, safer than incandescent or CFL bulbs
Well, it looks like you can add another contender to the great light bulb debate -- a group of researchers from RTI International now says that nanofiber lighter is is more efficient than incandescent light bulbs, and safer than compact fluorescents. The secret to that, it seems, is a combination of nanofiber-based reflectors and photoluminescent nanofibers (or PLN), which together are able to form a lighting device that pumps out more than 55 lumens of light output per electrical watt consumed. That's five times more efficient than a regular incandescent light bulb, and since there's no mercury, the researchers say it's far safer than CFL bulbs. W

Thailand to gain second iPhone carrier
Thailand will soon have a second iPhone carrier, says an industry source contacted by Reuters. The company is Total Access Communications, which is said to be planning a Thai iPhone launch within the space of a month. TAC is owned by the Norwegian corporation Telenor, which already sells the iPhone in several countries, mainly Scandinavian.

Samsung Wave launching Bada onto its very first handset at MWC
There's something nice and unequivocal about a huge billboard popping up in the host city of major tradeshow, and Samsung's Wave handset is making just such an entrance at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The previously unannounced handset will be running Samsung's brand new Bada platform, and appears to be a full touchscreen handset from the look of things. Amazon may give free Kindles to Prime subscribers
Amazon could soon give away free Kindles to all its most loyal customers, a rumor hints today. Gelegentlich gibt es Geschichten, die sind so schräg, dass man sie kaum glauben mag. Nathan Myhrvold, ehemals CTO bei Microsoft, hat mit seiner Firma Intellectual Ventures aus gewöhnlichen Technologiebestandteilen einen Laser entwickelt mit dem er Mosquitos im Flug abschiessen kann. Was zunächst mal nach Ego-Shooter Spaß klingt, hat einen Sinn. Die Idee: mit solchen Lasern Malaria-Überträger sauber aus der Luft entfernen. Die Software im Rücken erkennt übrigens den Unterschied zwischen Mensch und Mücke, puh, aber auch den zwischen Mosquito und Schmetterling oder ähnlichem. Video nach dem Klick. You ain't seen nothin' yet, because SIM card provider Sagem Orga has hooked up with Telefonica to develop a marvel of modern technology called "SIMFi" that combines -- you guessed it -- WiFi with a run-of-the-mill SIM card like you'd slip in your cell. Leaf launches "fastest" medium format camera back
Leaf has introduced a new medium-format camera back to the Aptus-II line, the Aptus-II 8. The camera back features a 40-megapixel resolution (7360x5562 pixels) and has a capture rate of under 0.8 seconds per frame, making it capable of a sustainable burst of more than 60 full resolution images per minute. The 1.73x1.3in (44x33mm) CCD has a 12 fñstop dynamic range and an 80-800 ISO sensitivity range. The Aptus-II series are the only medium format camera backs to use touchscreens, in this case a high contrast, 2.36x2.76in LCD.

Renewed Vision has unveiled an update to its lyric presentation and media playback application, ProPresenter. Version 4 delivers over 100 new features, including new template-based formatting, and the ability to import PowerPoint documents directly into the program. Users can now place multiple objects on the slide such as pictures, video loops or text boxes, and arrange them into any order. Ebay verliert erneut Markenrechtsstreit gegen Louis Vuitton
Ebay hat erneut in einem Markenrechtsstreit gegen Louis Vuitton eine Niederlage hinnehmen müssen. Ein Gericht in Paris entschieden, dass der Online-Händler den Markennamen Louis Vuitton geschädigt hat. Ebay muss nun 200.000 Euro Schadenersatz zahlen und für die Anwaltskosten des französischen Luxusartikelherstellers in Höhe von 30.000 Euro aufkommen. Needham predicts 142.5 million iPhone sales in 2019, raises AAPL estimates

Palm seen shipping 1 million phones this quarter
Palm will ship as many as 1 million webOS phones in its current quarter, according to estimates from Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu. Pointing to industry sources, the expert believes Palm will have seen a sudden rush between December and February thanks to the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus and should ship many more than the roughly 780,000 it moved in the earlier period. Clickgamer has announced an update to its popular Angry Birds catapult destruction game for the iPhone and iPod touch. Apps starts surge in January
Flurry, an iPhone apps analytics company, released a report today showing that iPhone apps starts increased sharply. They attribute that to the iPad, whose 1024x768 screen should motivate developers to rebuild their apps for the device.
Just like with the iPhone, developers who have their apps ready at launch should have a substantial advantage of getting attention drawn to their apps. The iPad tablet, announced at the very end of the month along with the new SDK, should increase app production even further in February.

Needham ups AAPL price target to $280
The research group at Needham & Co. is raising its price target on Apple stock, pushing the ceiling from $235 to $280. Analyst Charlie Wolf notes that Mac and iPhone sales have proven "materially higher" in the last two quarters than were forecast in September. Intel's Huron River notebook platform due early 2011
Early details have surfaced of the timetable and features of Intel's replacement for Calpella, the chipset that drives mobile Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Already known under its Huron River codename, the new platform is now expected in early 2011. It will still be built on a 32 nanometer process but will recognize processors built on the Sandy Bridge architecture, which should have both much faster integrated graphics, support for 1,600MHz DDR3 memory and unspecified higher clock speeds.

An der Keio Universität in Japan hat man die Festplattengrößen mal wieder bedenklich geschrumpft. In einem Prototypen haben sie schon jetzt auf Briefmarkengröße reduzierte 1TB SSDs hingebkommen. 90% kleiner als bislang. Und obendrein auch noch mit einem um 70% reduzierten Energieverbrauch. Die bislang für 2012 angekündigten SSDs sollen einen Datendurchsatz von 2Gbps haben. Das Prinzip: 128 NAND Flashchips werden übereinandergestapelt und kommunizieren miteinander über magnetische Signale. 2012. Das markieren wir uns doch jetzt schon mal im Kalender.

Facebook users (and really who isn't any more?) can now add their Facebook chat to any Jabber client, including iChat according to a Facebook blog post Wednesday morning. Jabber (XMPP) is the open source instant messaging protocol that is also used by Google Talk and other chat servers including one built into Apple's OSX Server.

Motorola will sich ab dem ersten Quartal 2011 spalten

Der angeschlagene Motorola-Konzern versucht, sich mit einer Aufspaltung selbst zu retten. Ab Anfang nächsten Jahres soll es zwei Unternehmen geben, eines für das Geschäft mit Phones und Unterhaltungselektronik, das andere widmet sich den Angeboten für Geschäftskunden. Das Verwaltungsrat scheint hinter der Entscheidung zu stehen, die Verantwortlichen für die jeweiligen Sparten werden also vermutlich die selben bleiben, und auch der Börsenhandel wird natürlich weiter gehen. Chrome für Mac 5 unterstützt wieder Add-ons
Google hat einmal mehr die zwischendurch ausgesetzte Unterstützung für Erweiterungen der Chrome-Version für Mac zurückgebracht. Chrome 5.0.307.2 ist jetzt für Mac OS X und Linux verfügbar. VW: Serienelektroauto kommt 2013

Version 2.0 der App von AutoScout24 bietet ab sofort eine "Search-Alert"-Funktion: Anwender können individuelle Suchkriterien auswählen und erhalten automatisch eine Nachricht, sobald ein entsprechendes Fahrzeug inseriert wird. Die Funktion kann eine Woche lang kostenlos getestet werden. Nach der Testphase besteht die Wahl zwischen drei Preisvarianten: Die Basis-Ausgabe des Dienstes kostet 1,59 Euro bei einer Laufzeit von einer Woche, die Silber-Variante umfasst drei Wochen und kostet 3,99 Euro. The best products of Macworld Expo 2010
I've been wavering on whether I think Macworld Expo can continue to be a success without Apple on board. The products on the show floor by and large aren't anything you haven't already seen on the Internet. You could probably visit for less than two hours and see everything you'd want.
But that doesn't mean that it wasn't absolutely packed. The show floor was fairly full of exhibitors and at noon when the doors opened to the general public, it was so packed that it was hard to walk around. David Pogue's un-Keynote was also packed and entertaining, if not technology focused.

Apple and Microsoft sued for patent violations
The Emblaze company announced in an official statement to have contacted Microsoft and Apple who have violated one of its patents. This patent describes something they call "The Emblaze's Live Streaming technology". It allows users to send live or pre-recorded audio and video to other devices. To speak only of Apple, they would violate this patent in Snow Leopard, and with the iPod touch, the iPhone and of course the future iPad. On March 15 it will be known if Apple and Microsoft agreed to pay royalties to Emblaze or if they will prefer to go to court. We wonder how many lawyers work now full-time for Apple. Microsoft is considering building Office for the iPad?
O RLY? Microsoft told T3 today that they were considering building Microsoft Office for the iPad.
Microsoft has revealed to T3 that it is looking at the possibily of releasing Office for Mac for the Apple iPad, although any official word is far from confirmed.
That is a pretty big non-statement, especially considering we are a year into Microsoft Exec Stephen Elop's hint that they'd building Office for the iPhone which is the same as the tablet with a smaller screen ---as far as office apps are concerned.

The best products of Macworld Expo 2010
I've been wavering on whether I think Macworld can continue to be a success. The products on the show floor by and large aren't anything you haven't already seen on the Internet. You could probably visit for less than two hours and see everything you'd want.
But that doesn't mean that it wasn't absolutely packed. The show floor was fairly full of exhibitors and at noon when the doors opened to the general public, it was so packed that it was hard to walk around. David Pogue's un-Keynote was also packed and entertaining, if not technology focused.

HyperMac Micro, Mini, and Nano hands-on
They're light, they're colorful, and with the exception of the Mini, HyperMac's new kandy-kolored iPhone / iPod batteries are easily pocketable. It's a shame the new style hasn't found its way to the MacBook-charging lineup -- let's hope that's in the cards -- but on the plus side, given it charges any USB-powered device, we can see this coming in pretty handy on an universal level. Canson bringing PaperShow presentation system to Mac
Canson has announced plans to bring Mac support to its PaperShow presentation system. MacNN took a closer look at the hardware, which was on-hand this week at the Macworld 2010 expo. The package consists of a large pen that writes on the company's special paper. Information from the pen is then sent via Bluetooth to a USB dongle attached to the computer.

Aperture2Twitter, Impression Aperture 3 plugins go 64-bit
Blue Crowbar Software has introduced new 64-bit versions of its Aperture2Twitter and Impression plugins for Aperture 3. The two new updates come highly recommended from the company and enable users to take advantage of the performance enhancements offered in the latest Aperture 3 software running natively in 64-bit mode. The company notes that support is still offered for the 32-bit versions of each plugin, but will require users to restart Aperture in 32-bit mode before being able to load them.

Patch for ancient DOS bug in latest Windows XP update causing blue screen errors
Looks like Patch Tuesday turned into BSOD Tuesday for some Windows XP users -- Microsoft's latest security updates for the venerable OS are causing blue screens and endless reboots for people. Lusting for more Android love from Motorola? Then you should start searching for a Chinese soulmate. We've been told that this ￥5,680 ($830) XT800 CDMA smartphone had been out for just a few days in Shenzhen -- right before the country shuts down for Chinese New Year on Sunday. Boinx brings out PhotoPresenter 4, FotoMagico 3.1
Boinx has released two significant software updates, most notably PhotoPresenter 4. The utility creates animated slideshows, which can incorporate music and video. Version 4 has been given an improved interface, with touches such as animated previews of selected themes. The number of themes has been expanded to 37, and slideshows can now be viewed in a standalone player, and/or given custom watermarks.

Asus wants to become another Apple
Asustek has a double life. On one side, this company plays the sub contractor for large computer manufacturers, and on the other side, it sells its own products and even takes the role of a more innovating manufacturer of PCs with for example its EEE-PC which were an immense success and created a market. Jonney Shih, the owner of Asustek has big ideas for his group. He wants to create (so he says) another Apple. To get at this result, it intends to diversify to the maximum the products that its company offers by supplementing its Wintel products (Windows + Intel) with products containing ARM processors and using Android and Chrome OS. For him, these processors and systems will be impossible to circumvent in the future and he does not intend to miss the bus. LaCie on Thursday introduced an upgraded product into its fold, with the Rugged eSATA external hard drive. Billed as the first rugged portable hard drive on the market with an eSATA port, it's considered fast at 90MBps transfer speeds when connected to the newer port.
