Motorola to roll out revised plan, schism not so clear-cut anymore
Remember Motorola's decision to pause the sale of its largest division? Change of plans again, folks. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company's getting ready to reveal a new initiative, whereby it still sells its wireless networking business, but the set-top box and core handset business would instead be spun off into a new, publicly-traded company. That'd invariably leave a pretty small Motorola -- less than one-third its current size in terms of sales, selling primarily public-radio system and bar-code scanners. Panasonic prices, dates early 2010 camcorders
Panasonic has released pricing and availability for the three new compact HD video cameras and three new standard definition video cameras that it had revealed in early January. The HD cameras will start at $500, and the SD cameras at $250. All six video cameras will be available in mid-March.

Apple ranks fifth amongst US electronics retailers
Apple ranked a solid fifth amongst US electronics retailers during 2009, figures from the NPD Group show. Judging by physical store revenue, Apple found itself behind Best Buy, Walmart, Staples and Target. The company was also fifth in terms of online-only numbers, dominated by Dell, Amazon, Best Buy and HP. This marks a slight slide from 2008, when Apple placed fourth in online sales.

Windows 8 to have "completely different" approach
Microsoft plans to make its next version of Windows a major overhaul, an employee claimed in an MSDN blog that has been pulled but remains cached online. What most people refer to as Windows 8 will be something "completely different from what folks usually expect of Windows" and will have a broad consensus from the company. We didn't know the toy industry was ready to jump into the app store game, but apparently' we've underestimated its fad-grabbing prowess. Wild Planet is calling its new Spy Video TRAKR remote controlled robot the first "app-enabled" toy, with special filters and routines that kids can program for the vehicle and share online. Insider Software has begun shipping FontAgent Pro Server 4, an upgraded version of its font management software. The code organizes, tracks and distributes fonts in use by a group of workers, keeping an eye on problems like font corruption or license violations. Intact Lab intros MS Surface-like table PC
Very similar in concept to the Microsoft Surface comes a table-like PC from Intact Lab, dubbed Touchy Remix. The Touchy Remix is slightly different in execution from the Surface, however, as its fiberglass base caves inwards, giving users space for their knees when seated, unlike the box-like Surface. iSuppli schätzt Kosten des kleinsten iPad auf 219 Dollar

Flash-free Hulu will be coming to the iPad soon, in development now?
Sure we know the iPad doesn’t support Flash, and sure we know that this means popular video website, Hulu, won’t work on the Apple device (though YouTube and Vimeo etc will). Now TechCrunch is reporting (which at least one 9to5mac staffer reckons they’ve also heard) that Hulu is cooking up an iPad-friendly version of its site which should be ready when the new Apple thingummy hits market.

Motorola debuts docking station for USBw 200 WiMAX dongle
Already feeling the limitations of your Motorola USBw 200 WiMAX dongle? Then you might be just the ever-demanding sort that Moto is after with its new docking station for the WiMAX adapter. While it might look a tad out of place at a coffee shop, the dock should improve performance quite a bit when you're at home or at the office, with it promising to fully double the 3db gain that the WiMAX adapter provides on its own, and effectively give you the same performance as a standalone desktop WiMAX unit. Microsoft's MWC digs come together, 'Ready, Set' is the theme
The fine city of Barcelona is abuzz this week as final preparations for Mobile World Congress fall into place -- and as you probably know by now, we're all expecting Microsoft to pull out all of the stops to introduce Windows Mobile 7. Just like last year, Redmond is renting out the Catalonia Barcelona Plaza Hotel across the street from the convention center to help kick off its announcements in style, and reader Javier has been kind enough to send in some shots of the facility getting done up in Microsoft livery for the event. Emblaze sues Microsoft, says iPad subject to Apple suit
Emblaze today sued Microsoft for allegedly violating the same patents that resulted in a lawsuit against Apple late last year. We've recently espied some new video detailing Volvo's pedestrian detection system, and while some of this info has been out for a while now we figure it's certainly more than cool enough to warrant a quick look. Disney CEO lays out broad iPad plans
The iPad has "a lot of potential," claims Disney CEO Bob Iger. In talking about the device following a quarterly earnings conference, Iger notes that the company is already working on updated ABC News and ESPN Score Center apps, which will provide new ways of viewing content. The CEO argues however that the tablet could allow for "essentially new forms of content," since it has a high-quality display while being distinct from a TV or a normal desktop computer.

Google trialing 1Gbps fiber Internet across US
Google today upturned the US Internet business by promising Google Fiber for Communities. The "experimental" service will give between 50,000 and 500,000 users 1Gbps fiber optic service, or more than 20 times faster than the fastest readily available Internet access in the US. KDE 4.4 'Caikaku' released, complete with netbook trimmings
KDE might not be on as many folks' radar as Ubuntu, but that might change a bit with the release of KDE Software Compilation 4.4 (a.k.a "Caikaku"), which looks to add considerably more than some tweaks and a bit of polish. iPad materials may cost mininum of $219
The base material costs of building an iPad are at least $219.35, says research firm iSuppli. In a 16GB model the memory is projected to cost $29.50, while the Apple A4 processor is thought to be worth $17; the manufacturing partner for the chip is believed to be Samsung. Samsung hat das Teil schon mal kurz auf der CES aufblitzen lassen, jetzt wurde es amtlich angekündigt: Der Mini-MP3-Player TicToc zielt offensichtlich auf ein verspieltes, um nicht zu sagen albernes Publikum, das farbige Punkte auf Geräten fancy findet. Lustig geht´s auch weiter, denn außer dem Knopf zum Ein- und Ausschalten gibt es keine weiteren, konvetionellen Bedienelemente. TicToc wird nämlich durch gezieltes Schütteln gesteuert. Die Akkus sollen für 12 Stunden geschütelte Musik reichen, auf den Markt soll das Teil im Laufe des Jahres in 2-GB- und 4-GB-Versionen kommen, Preise stehen allerdings noch aus.

Think of it as half spell check and half thesaurus. The new iPad Safari has a feature that when you select a word, you get the option of "Replace..". If the word is spelled incorrectly, you get a few spelling choices. If it is spelled correctly, you get the option of a few similar words.
If you spell something incorrectly, you simply have to tap on the word and it goes pink with suggestions:

Sprint sees rare gain in core customers in late 2009
Sprint this morning posted a rare surprise gain in its core subscriber base after years of losses. Although its net subscriber base was down 69,000 in fall 2009 due to a large number of customers leaving the push-to-talk iDEN network, it actually gained 3,000 total subscribers to its CDMA phone service. The boost was the first in a year and a half and was helped both by some iDEN users switching to CDMA as well as added business, including the completed takeover of Virgin Mobile.

AppFund: Risikokapital für iPad-Entwickler
Für US-Entwickler von Anwendungen fürs iPad könnte der AppFund interessant sein, selbst wenn Venture Capital nie ein Thema für sie war. Diesen Spezialfonds haben Kevin Wendle, Mitbegründer des Medienkonzerns CNET und Daniel Klaus, Mitbegründer des Musikempfehlungsnetzwerks MusicNation gegründet. Ausdrücklich soll hier Entwicklern von vielversprechenden Anwendungen für das iPad und für "ähnlicher" Tablet-Geräte mit Finanzspritzen geholfen werden. Es werden Förderungen zwischen 5.000 und 500.000 US-Dollar pro Entwicklungsprojekt in Aussicht gestellt. Aufwendungen für Promotion und Vermarktung sind eingeschlossen. Warum das Ganze? Apple's 32GB 3G iPad costs just $287.15 to make, iSuppli estimates
iSuppli has issued its pre-release estimate for the component costs of parts used in Apple’s iPad, suggesting Apple has some room to manouver when it comes to the cost of the product.Apple may pay as little as $219.35 for the new tablet's parts, the researchers said. AT&T: new 3G gear to be upgradable to 4G
AT&T today shined extra light on its plans to move to 4G. As part of an extended deal with Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson to upgrade its network, every 3G cell site upgrade in 2010 will also be upgradable to the much faster Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard for 4G, whether it requires add-on hardware, new software or both. The move will let AT&T switch on 4G in these areas more quickly than it could if it had to completely replace the site.

Blockbuster files for bankruptcy in Portugal, blames internet piracy
Don't start lining up the global dominos just yet but Blockbuster is filing for bankruptcy in Portugal. In the 90s, an era predating Internet streaming and digital downloads, Blockbuster was rocking some 100 stores. Today that number is around 27, most of which are struggling to survive. Blockbuster blames government's flacid response to internet piracy for its insolvency. And here we thought short-sighted executives distracted by their brick-n-mortar profits carried some of the blame.

Das ist doch mal eine markige Ansage: Opera hat für nächste Woche auf der MWC Opera Mini für das iPhone angekündigt. Opera Mini soll zunächst nur einer kleinen Gruppe von Journalisten gezeigt werden und wird aller Wahrscheinlichkeit auch nie das Licht des App Stores erblicken, denn schliesslich mag Apple keine Apps, die die gleiche Funktionalität wie die eigenen haben. Überraschung im Browserkrieg: Auf dem GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona wird Opera erstmals Opera Mini für das iPhone zeigen. Bislang gibt es im App Store bis auf inline App-Lösungen keine Safari-Alternative für das iPhone. Opera wird Opera Mini für das iPhone auf dem Mobile World Congress (MWC) nur ausgewählten Partnern sowie Journalisten zeigen. Die allgemeine Öffentlichkeit wird noch keine Möglichkeit haben, sich eine Vorabversion von Opera Mini auf dem iPhone anzusehen. Auch die iPhone-Variante von Opera Mini wird die üblichen Funktionen des Handybrowsers umfassen, sich aber in einem entscheidenden Punkt von den andern Opera-Mini-Versionen unterscheiden: Auf dem iPhone läuft Opera Mini native, weil es keine Java-Virtual-Machine besitzt.
Bislang wurde Opera Mini noch nicht zum Review in den App Store eingestellt. Opera hofft nun, dass Apple Opera Mini nicht ablehnt und den Nutzern so eine Wahlmöglichkeit gibt, welchen Browser sie verwenden wollen.

Acer meldet höchsten Nettogewinn seit fast drei Jahren
Acer hat im vierten Quartal 2009 einen Gewinnzuwachs von 24,9 Prozent auf 3,5 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar (79 Millionen Euro) verzeichnet, im Vergleich zu 2,8 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar im Vorjahresquartal. Damit hat der PC-Hersteller den höchsten Nettogewinn seit dem ersten Quartal 2007 erwirtschaftet. Einem Bericht von Bloomberg zufolge liegt das Ergebnis aber unter den Erwartungen der Analysten, die Acers Profit auf 3,8 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar geschätzt hatten.

Google Street View zeigt Wettkampfstätten der Winterspiele
Um Street-View-Nutzern die Wettkampfstätten der Olympischen Winterspiele in Vancouver näher zu bringen, hat Google unter anderem Bergpanoramen in 2000 Metern Höhe, Abfahrtsstrecken und Skisprunganlagen fotografiert. Opera will Browser für das iPhone zeigen
Wie Opera bekannt gegeben hat, wird man die mobile Mini-Variante des gleichnamigen Browsers auf dem Mobile World Congress in einer iPhone-Version vorstellen. Allerdings wird die Demonstration des Opera Mini 5 Beta nur Pressevertretern zugänglich sein. Apple hat das Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update auf die Version 3.0 veröffentlicht. Nach dem Update können Aperture 3.0 und iPhoto ‘09 die Raw-Daten weiterer Kameras lesen.

ASUS introduced its G73JH-X1 gaming laptop right at the start of CES this year, but it unfortunately didn't have much to say about pricing or availability at the time. NVIDIA Also Interested by External Graphic Cards for Notebooks
ATI/AMD is trying to develop a new market for graphic cards dedicated to notebooks, under the name of XGP.
So far, those solutions were not really successful (performance and market wise). However, with NVIDIA also interested by the market, it could open doors for innovation driven by competition between both main actors in the field of GPU. In a recent interview, Rene Haas, NVIDIA Notebook GPU General Manager acknowledges that he company had project for this segment. If both actors could agree to use the PCI-Express port as a common and default entry point for their respective systems, it could push notebook manufacturers to include it in all their models, or at least mid-range and high-end products. About Time to Get a Fix for the Mac Pro 2009 Audio Bug!?
The problem seems to affect most units equipped with Nehalem CPU bit also several iMac Core i5 and i7 configurations. It translates into a sudden and excessive increase of the CPU temperature leading the fan to go full speed as soon as you start using the audio resource of those computers. Several tests and experiments performed by unfortunate users seem to define the integrated audio solution of the chipset as the origin of this problem. If you use an audio PCI card, the problem disappear as the audio will directly be managed by the card and not the audio integrated into the chipset. Last but not least, this bug is NOT present when running Windows 7 on the same computers so indicating a clear issue with the OS/drivers. Panasonic adds two 1080p, low-light camcorders
Panasonic in a late-night launch extended its 3MOS camcorders with a pair of top-tier models. Together, the HS700 and TM700 both shoot full widescreen 1080p video but carry very high resolution 14.2-megapixel sensors that are useful both for large still images and better motion. In full video mode, the 3MOS sensors cut down on half of the noise in the shot and simultaneously improve sensitivity to detail in low light.

Panasonic debuts HDC-HS700 and HDC-TM700 1080p camcorders
Panasonic's brewing up some 1080p goodies in the new HDC-HS700 and HDC-TM700 (pictured) camcorders, both of which do up 1080p video at a nice 60 fps (or 60i or 24p), and record using a 3MOS sensor system. The new cameras are differentiated with a 240GB HDD in the HS700 and the 32GB of flash memory in the TM700, and act as a followup to the well-lauded HS300 / TM300 series. REAL Studio 2010 R1 improves ActiveX support, adds languages
REAL Software has released an update to its development utility, Studio 2010. The software was previously known as REALbasic, although the programming language name remains unchanged. Release 1 adds several new features and improvements, including additional support for ActiveX. Previous versions only offered a limited subset of ActiveX controls, while the latest release is claimed to support most of the controls and all events.

Conceptual Corky mouse gets charged through motion, doubles as a wine stopper
It's still in concept form at the moment, but America's own Adele Peters just might have a winner with Corky. This obviously cork-based mouse relies on "piezoelectric elements to generate energy every time you click or move it around on your desk," meaning that nary a battery would ever be used to power it. In case that's not sustainable enough for you, the whole thing is made from easily recyclable materials, so it shouldn't mar Ma Earth when it gets tossed at the end of its useful life. Arten Science has announced that its MonitorMyMac software will now be offered as a free download. The application can be set up to take timed images, which can be stored locally or uploaded to an FTP server or MobileMe account. MonitorMyMac is capable of capturing screenshots of a user's desktop, pictures from the webcam, or simultaneous captures from both sources. By automatically uploading pictures to online storage, users allow themselves to monitor a computer via an iPhone, notebook, or any web-enabled device.

Google Maps 4 integrates Buzz status updates
Google on Tuesday released a new version of its Maps utility for mobile phones, less than a week after the previous v3.4 update. Version 4.0 integrates directly with the company's new Buzz service. Users can post live updates tagged with their location, add pictures, or view and comment on Buzz posts from other users. A new layer has been added to the maps interface, allowing the Buzz overlay to be easily enabled or disabled.

Adobe: Flash 10.1 will require 'some enhancements to existing versions of Android'
As you may have noticed, there were a few reports making the rounds earlier today that suggested Flash 10.1 for Android would be limited to phones running Android 2.1. Apple seeds second iPhone SDK 3.2 beta to developers
Apple on Tuesday released a second beta version of the iPhone 3.2 SDK to developers. The first beta was initially seeded last month following the iPad unveiling. Many of the new features are focused on the iPad, with tools geared for the larger screen resolution. Google Maps 4.0 with Buzz support now available in Android Market
Looks like Android's getting in on the new Google Buzz party in more ways than one today -- in addition to support in the browser, Maps 4.0 is now in the Android Market and it's all Buzz-ed up and ready to go. We've heard from both Droid and G1 owners that it works on their devices, so we're guessing every other Android set out there running 1.6 or higher will work as well -- let us know if you find anything else cool, won't you? HTC planning 1.5GHz ultimate phone with Android 2.2?
HTC may be in the earlier stages of developing an extremely high-end Android smartphone, says a code string reportedly leaked on Tuesday. Possibly to launch as the Scorpion, it would use the dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor teased at CES and would use Android 2.2, which is likely to be the final name for the update Google has so far codenamed Froyo. One line of code also makes reference to WiMAX and suggests it might head to Sprint's 4G network.

Seagate Unveils Savvio HD
While waiting for the transition to sSD, Seagate announced its new 2.5" HD, aka Savvio 10K4.
Those drives are dedicated to servers and heavy usage systems (24/7). They spin at 10,000 rpm and offer up to 600 GB of storage space. They are available in 2 format, SAS at 6 Gbits/s and Fiber Channel at4 Gbits/s.With a dedicated adaptor it is possible to install them in a Mac Pro sporting a RAID card. They are more silent that the 3.5" SAS and drain/exhaust much less power. The annual failure rate is 0.44% according to Seagate, much lower than the HD dedicated to the consumer electronic market.

NVidia Optimus: THE Technology We Absolutely Need in Our MacBook Pro!
Yesterday, NVIDIA launched Optimus Technology, the final evolution of what was initially known as Hybrid SLI. It looks a bit similar to the current system allowing MacBoo Pro sporting a GF 9400 M and a second NVIDIA discrete GPU to switch from one to the other to choose between performance and battery lifetime. The final step is linked to the way this switching procedure is taking place. While it requires a MacBook Pro user to change setting and log out then in, with Optimus, this switch can be performed on the fly and in a totally transparent manner for the end user. Depending on the needs, Optimus will activate or pause the discrete GPU, without affecting display. This technology is now available, and we would not understand why Apple would not include it for its new MacBook Pro models which should be unveiled in about a week. It would only need to associate the GF 9400 M with a GF 200 or 300, supporting Optimus, giving then birth to notebooks able to easily switch from performance to battery
