Google to acquire Gizmo5, swing at Skype with VoIP-enabled Google Voice?
There's no official word on this yet, but the inimitable Michael Arrington says that Google's up and purchased VoIP company Gizmo5 for "around $30 million in cash." You know, pocket change for the crew in Moutain View. The deal would presumably bring Gizmo's SIP-based VoIP talents to Google Voice, taking it from quirky phone-management service to complete end-to-end calling solution, and instantly catapulting it into direct competition with Skype. Heavy stuff -- we'll see if Google or Gizmo5 confirms Mssr. Arrington's report sometime soon.

Mac OS X security update addresses list of vulnerabilities
Apple on Monday released Security Update 2009-006 for Leopard and Snow Leopard operating systems, including Server and Client editions. The update addresses a number of vulnerabilities, including an issue that could have allowed disk images using FAT filesystems to execute arbitrary code. Memory handling has also been improved with DirectoryService to prevent remote attacks.

Mac OS X 10.6.2 update out on the prowl
It's been awhile, but we've got ourselves a brand spanking new OS X update in the mix, 10.6.2 for Snow Leopard. So far the biggest change here seems to be fixing that nagging guest account deletion bug -- and thank goodness for that. As for whether or not it supports Intel Atom processors, last we heard this morning it wasn't going to be there, but we're gonna have wait and see now that it's officially hit the nets. Leopard users who haven't made the upgrade also get a gift today, in the form of a security update. 10.6.2 release notes after the break.

Mac OS X 10.6.2 fixes guest account data deletions
Apple has at last released Mac OS X 10.6.2, a key update to Snow Leopard. The patch addresses a variety of technical problems, most notably one which would permanently delete data when logging into a main account after having just used a guest one. The bug has been known since at least early October. Other resolved account problems include unexpected logouts, and difficulty authenticating as an administrator.

Sprint to cut up to 2,500 jobs
Sprint this afternoon warned that it will cut between 2,000 and 2,500 more jobs to improve its bottom line. The cellular provider says the cuts will apply both to internal and contractor jobs and that most of the layoffs should take effect before the end of the year. All the cuts should have a net effect of saving Sprint about $350 million per year in expenses.

Ricoh outs GXR system with interchangeable lenses, sensors
Ricoh will release a new camera system sometime in December that promises to be smaller than either Olympus' or Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds Cameras. Called GXR, the key feature of the system will be to make both the sensor and lens interchangeable. Photographers will have the option of replacing both the lens and sensor as a package instead of just the lens alone.

iTunes buyers visit more, spend less than rivals
iTunes is the only music store seeing a significant boost to the number of purchases at its shop, online banking site Mint notes in a recent look at its own data. While those visiting Apple's music store have always bought more frequently, shopping about 2 to 2.5 times a month, the introduction of variable pricing in April has actually led to customers now buying an average of nearly 3.5 times a month as of July. In contrast, none of its competitors have ventured significantly past 1.5 visits.

O2 UK intros iPhone Total Connectivity Bolt On
UK carrier O2 has announced a new "Bolt On" option for iPhone subscribers, the Total Connectivity package. The plan combines O2's £9.79, 3GB per month tethering Bolt On with a standard O2 Home Broadband connection, at no extra cost. The deal is explicitly associated with the iPhone 3G however, and will be available only between November 10th and December 31st.

Ricoh GXR camera system swaps out the sensor along with the lens
Ricoh's been getting some love on its spendy GR series of late, but this new direction for what's apparently slated to debut as a new "GXR" system is a wild one indeed. Basically, the camera comes in two parts, a body with an LCD, storage and accessory shoe (which works with an electronic viewfinder), and different lens / sensor combos which can be slotted into the body. Interestingly (and perhaps to prove the point), the first two lenses and sensors that Ricoh is announcing are widely different, with a 24-70mm lens on top of a 10 megapixel CCD sensor that can shoot VGA video retailing for £300 (about $500 USD), while a 50mm macro lens with a CMOS sensor that can do HD video goes for £600 (about $1,000 USD). Google today said it has bought mobile advertising house AdMob for $750 million. The deal gives Google control of what's considered the single largest advertiser on phones and is characterized as helping to better monetize the ads that reach platforms like Android and the iPhone. Samsung to abandon Windows Mobile for Android?
Samsung is about deal Microsoft one of its most severe blows yet by dropping Windows Mobile from most of its phones, an investment note issued today says. HMC Investment Securities analyst Greg Noh understands that the Korean company's use of Windows Mobile will crash from 80 percent this year to just 50 percent in 2010 and will lower further still in future years. Latest Google Chrome Mac beta seems stable, reports
Google Chrome has been updated to version 4.0.237.0 for all platforms, according to Anthony Laforge, Google Chrome program manager, who writes on the related blog. As the company continues to stress development of the Mac version following Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s hint the new Mac browser would ship by Christmas, it’s interesting that Laforge mentions just a single change for the Mac version of the browser - “significant bookmark bar improvements”.Could this mean the Mac version is inching towards a stable build? Apple attracts in Japan. Singapore, Qatar get in on iPhone action
Apple has arranged a series of new deals to boost the profile of the iPhone in the Qatar and Singapore, while Japan’s Softbank as confirmed the device continues to attract new users to its network.Softbank signed up more users than any of its larger rivals in Japan in October, thanks in part to demand for the iPhone. Apple is persisting in efforts to expand iPhone sales before the end of 2009, reports note. iPhone vs. Windows 7: GIGABYTE veröffentlicht BIOS-Update
Nach den Problemen mit der Synchronisation des iPhones unter Windows 7 auf PCs mit Intels P55-Chipsatz, hat GIGABYTE nun als erster Hersteller eingelenkt und ein BIOS-Update veröffentlicht, das das Problem beheben soll. When you're rolling out a new 7.2Mbps upgrade to your network, it naturally helps if you've got some compliant hardware in the stable -- so to that end, AT&T has announced its USBConnect Lightning from Sierra Wireless today. Intel readying "fast transition" to Pine Trail Atoms?
Intel is planning to almost completely overhaul its Atom processors with an early Pine Trail unveiling and a near complete replacement of its most important models, a leak suggests. The company reportedly plans to introduce its next-generation designs on December 21st and have PC makers shipping finished products by January 4th, when many had expected the initial unveiling. It's been a few months since Nokia's X6 hit the scene, but the touchscreen-based, S60-lovin' smartphone is just about ready to ship out to those who've managed to avoid all of the other stellar options that have launched since early September. Bericht: Vodafone plant deutlich höhere Einsparungen
Der Mobilfunkanbieter Vodafone plant angeblich, sein Sparprogramm auszuweiten. Einem Bericht der Financial Times zufolge will Vodafone-CEO Vittorio Colao bis März 2011 nicht eine Milliarde Pfund (1,12 Milliarden Euro), sondern 1,5 Milliarden Pfund (1,68 Milliarden Euro) einsparen. Notebook demand surges 35.7% in summer
Notebooks rode a massive wave of demand in summer, according to new IDC data. Shipments of mobile processors attached to the systems jumped 35.7 percent compared to the spring and grew more than three times faster than for desktop processors, which advanced 11.4 percent at the same time. Server processors like Intel's Xeon and AMD's Opteron saw their sales grow by 12.2 percent over the period.

Apple continues to block 3G VoIP on iPhones
Apple is still preventing the use of 3G VoIP on iPhones, according to observers. While Wi-Fi has always been an option for Skype and other iPhone VoIP apps, 3G calling has typically been blocked out of bandwidth concerns, and the potential for depriving cellphone carriers -- namely AT&T -- of voice revenue. In regions with unlimited data, 3G VoIP could effectively circumvent minute limitations.

Bowers & Wilkins signaled its intent to get into portable audio on Monday by previewing the P5, its first portable headphone set. Cyclehoop: Straßenschilder fahrradtauglich machen

Als würde es nicht ohnehin schon jeder machen, aber mit dem Cyclehoop kann nun jedes Schild in der Stadt zu einer amtlichen Fahrradparkstation umgemodelt werden. Vor allem können so auch mehrere Räder einfacher angekettet werden. Auch den Dieben wird das Tageswerk erschwert, da nun das einfach Anheben der Räder über ein Schild oder einen Poller nun auch nicht mehr so ohne Weiteres möglich ist. Zii processor promises Blu-ray grade video
ZiiLabs today claimed a milestone in mobile processors with the ZMS-08, its second new chip in a year. The new design blends the existing many-core design of the original ZMS-05 with a 1GHz ARM Cortex processor and should process video at a level previously unseen in mobile chips. While other chips can decode 1080p video, the new design reportedly processes the HD output in High Profile H.264, or enough quality to match Blu-ray.

NVIDIA denies x86 chip, pushes Fermi to 2010
NVIDIA chief Jen-Hsun Huang has denied rekindled talk of his company making x86 processors. Speaking after a conference call, the CEO claims that his focus is still "very, very clear" and that the focus is on graphics processors and closely related parallel computing cards like the Tesla line. Gigabyte fixes iPhone sync issue with BIOS update
The Intel P55 Express chipset snafu that caused iPhones to lose their syncing minds has now been remedied -- at least by one motherboard maker. Gigabyte has issued a BIOS update making things all hunky-dory between the phone and the mobo, putting your troubles to an end. The P55 is Intel's latest midrange chipset and orchestrates things for newer Core i5 / i7 machines. Nook reader demand pushes shipments to Dec. 11
Barnes & Noble today alerted Nook buyers that new orders now won't ship until December 11th (subscription required). The delay from the original November 30th date follows a recent push back for some until December 7th and is credited by spokeswoman Ellen Keating to sales that have "surpassed our expectations." News: Apple TV 3.0.1 fixes disappearing content bug

Autonomous Roombas do Pac-Man right (video)
We've seen mixtures of Roomba and Pac-Man before, but nothing like this. A team of developers have hacked five floor-cleaning bots to create a sort of OCD version of the game, with the Pac-Man bot sucking up little white rectangles whilst being chased by robot incarnations of Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde. But, when the Pac-Man vacuum finds a power pellet those ghostly rovers turn blue and start fleeing. The tech is supposed to be a demonstration of the developers' Unmanned Aerial System suite, designed for guidance of airborne vehicles, but we're too busy geeking out to care about potential real-world applications of this tech. In der Regel muss man sich Hilfe durch Krücken oder Rollstühle schaffen, damit man dennoch irgendwie mobil bleiben kann. Aber mal eben einen Capuccino kaufen gehen, Geld aus der Tasche holen, das wird alles relativ kompliziert. Nun will der Freedom Leg all den Unglücklichen, die an einer Fraktur sich die Zähne ausbeissen, ein bisschen mehr Lebenskomfort geben. Laufen ganz ohne Krücken. Samsung zahlt Qualcomm 870 Millionen Euro für weitere Kooperation im Wireless-Geschäft

Der koreanische Elektronikgigant Samsung und Qualcomm haben einen neuen Cross-Licensing-Deal abgeschlossen. Für satte 1,3 Millarden Dollar (ca. 870 Millionen Euro) kann Samsung für die nächsten 15 Jahre 3G- und 4G-fähige Wirelessgeräte bei Qualcomm produzieren. Dafür darf Qualcomm auf 57 Mobiltechnologiepatente der Koreaner zurückgreifen. Das klingt nach einer längerfristigen Zusammenarbeit, beim Chiphersteller aus San Diego dürften erstmal die Sektknorken knallen. Über nähere Details schweigt sich Samsung noch aus.

Nokia ruft Ladegeräte wegen Kurzschlussgefahr zurück
Nokia hat aufgrund einer Kurzschlussgefahr eine Rückrufaktion für Ladegeräte seines Vertragsfertigers BYD gestartet. Nach Unternehmensangaben sind die Modelle AC-3E und AC-3U betroffen, die zwischen dem 15. Juni und dem 9. August 2009 hergestellt wurden. Auch Ladegeräte des Typs AC-4U, die in der Zeit vom 13. April bis 25. Oktober 2009 produziert wurden, ruft der Handyhersteller zurück.

Firefox Mobile hat ein Logo: der Pocketfox

Samsung pays Qualcomm $1.3 billion to secure wireless licenses
Samsung and Qualcomm have wrapped up a cross-licensing deal with nine figures of US currency in it, which will permit the Korean giant to continue producing 3G- and 4G-enabled wireless devices for the next 15 years. In exchange, Samsung is letting Qualcomm make use of its own 57 patents on mobile technology and splashing out a further $1.3 billion as a down payment. Die bislang größte Versteigerung von Mobilfunkfrequenzen in Deutschland droht zu scheitern. Wie das Nachrichtenmagazin "Der Spiegel" berichtet, zweifelt die EU-Kommission an der Ausgewogenheit der Auktion und will noch dieses Jahr ein Vertragsverletzungsverfahren auf den Weg bringen. Latest Google Chrome Mac beta seems stable, reports
Google Chrome has been updated to version 4.0.237.0 for all platforms, according to Anthony Laforge, Google Chrome program manager, who writes on the related blog. As the company continues to stress development of the Mac version following Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s hint the new Mac browser would ship by Christmas, it’s interesting that Laforge mentions just a single change for the Mac version of the browser - “significant bookmark bar improvements”.Could this mean the Mac version is inching towards a stable build? Bitkom: Europäischer ITK-Markt stabilisiert sich im Jahr 2010
Der ITK-Markt wird sich im kommenden Jahr europaweit stabilisieren. Das berichtet der Hightech-Verband Bitkom auf Basis aktueller Daten des European Information Technology Observatory (EITO). Der aktuellen EITO-Prognose zufolge wird der Umsatz mit Produkten und Diensten der Informationstechnik, Telekommunikation und Consumer Electronics in der EU im Jahr 2010 um 0,5 Prozent auf rund 714 Milliarden Euro sinken. Im Jahr 2009 soll der Umsatz um 2,2 Prozent auf 718 Milliarden Euro zurückgehen.

Android auf dem iPhone? Warum denn auch nicht. In China zumindest, mit dem Aphone A6, geht das jetzt. Ein Clone nah dran am Original, mit Android 1.5 und Multitouch. Der Home-Button ist hier ein Trackball und offenbar soll auf disem Handy ein Doppelprozessor laufen, bei 300MHz. Außerdem an Bord: WiFi, Bluetooth, 130MB RAM, 256MB Flash und eine 2-Megapixel-Kamera. 3G? Keine Ahnung. Das Aphone A6 ist im Moment noch ein Prototyp, mehr Details im Video nach dem Break.[via

Canalys-Studie: iPhone m. 18% Marktanteil b. Smartphones
Nach aktuellen Canalys-Zahlen ist der weltweite Smartphone-Absatz in Q309 um vier Prozent gestiegen. Nokia (Symbian) liegt danach mit 40 Prozent weiterhin unangefochten vor, gefolgt von RIM (BlackBerry, 21%) und Apple (iPhone OS, 18%). DB-Analyst: iPhone wird geschäftsfähig
Der in San Francisco für die Deutsche Bank tätige Analyst Chris Whitmore rechnet dem iPhone stetig wachsende Chancen auch und gerade im Unternehmenseinsatz aus. Er schätzt, dass Ende 2009 weltweit bereits zwei Millionen iPhones als "Dienstwaffe" eingesetzt werden. Wenn es so käme, würde sich das iPhone einen Zuwachs auf sieben Prozent weltweit bei von Unternehmen genutzten Smartphones sichern (2008: 2 Prozent). We just received a set of screengrabs from an anonymous source giving us a glimpse at what appears to be Google's (and thus, the world's) future interface to its web applications, Gmail in particular. While we were originally tempted to ignore them, communications with the tipster would indicate genuine insider knowledge. Regardless, we can not independently confirm the authenticity of these images. Having said that, the pics demonstrate a more unified apps interface based on Google's Wave and accessible from any browser (as they are now). Nvidia will Exaflop-Supercomputer bis 2017

Sun meldet Umsatzrückgang um 25 Prozent
Sun Microsystems hat im ersten Quartal (bis 27. September) seines Geschäftsjahres 2010 einen Umsatzrückgang um 25 Prozent verzeichnet. Die Einnahmen des Unternehmens sanken im Vergleich zum Vorjahr von 2,99 auf 2,24 Milliarden Dollar. Bereits im Juni 2009 hat die Stuttgarter Internetagentur DMC eine Studie unter dem Namen "Mobile Shopping: Pausenfüller oder neue Umsatzpotentiale für Versandhändler?" veröffentlicht. Aus den Ergebnissen: a) 7,3 Millionen Deutsche nutzen bereits das mobile Internet; b) Fast 80% der Befragten rufen E-Mails mobil ab; c) Über 70 Prozent nutzen unterschiedliche Informationsdienste wie Nachrichten, Wetter-, Verkehrsinformationen oder ähnliche Auskünfte übers mobile Internet; d) Geokoordinaten-Dienste wie Web Map Services oder Navigationsdienste bevorzugen rund 40 Prozent der Befragten; e) Bereits 30 Prozent nutzen das mobile Internet für Reise-, Shopping- und Ticketdienste.

Apple Wants to Have iPhones Everywhere
If the exclusive partnership was originally allowing Apple to secure its investment and enter in a new market without taking too much financial risks, it clearly now slows down mass availability of the iPhone to customers, and promote jailbreaking of such devices, as well as grey market. As most of the exclusive partnership will end by the end of the year, and starting January, we should might see the iPhone supported by all carriers and countries, except when there is some hardware compatibility between the device and the network. Verizon, the US carrier suspected to offer the iPhone is a very near future, is using a rather specific protocol, known as CDMA2000, not supported by default by the iPhone. Apple Cancelled Orders of iMac Core i5/i7!?
As numerous other users, Fabrice who purchased online a iMac powered by a Core i5 CPU few hours after its introduction, was surprised by the long waiting period display on the online store.
As many other customers worldwide, he has seen his order cancelled by Apple without any further explanation. So, either there is a bug on the online store, or an issue with those models (unlikely). Let's hope that those users who have placed orders quickly after the launch of those high-ends model will not be put at the end of the waiting list, otherwise they will again have to wait for one or two more weeks to get their shipment

First iPhone worm rickrolls jailbroken phones
We sort of knew this would happen as soon as we heard about that iPhone wallpaper hack in the Netherlands -- a hacker named ikex has created what's apparently the first iPhone worm, and it's currently infecting jailbroken iPhones across Australia. The "ikee" worm, as it's being called, takes advantage of the fact that jailbroken iPhones with SSH installed all have the same default root password of "alpine," and once in the system it changes your wallpaper to an image of Rick Astley and then tries to install itself on other jailbroken iPhones on the network. First Worm to Target iPhone OS Identified
On the blog site of Sophos is reported what could be the first virus specifically developed for the iPhone. As usual with first attempt, it is not really dangerous. It simply replace the background photo by one of Rick Astley.
So, before some users or analysts start screaming ahead of security holes etc, such worm can only propagate/affect jailbreaked iPhones. It makes use of the SSH and its efault password, "Aline", to infect users who did not change this password after having jailbreaked their iPhone.
