Mac mini refresh allegedly caught on camera
Well, what do we have here? According to MacRumors, this could quite possibly be the next-gen Mac mini we've been waiting so patiently for. This guy would seem to correspond roughly to other possible "leaks" we've been hipped to in the past, including the presence of five USB ports, FireWire 800, Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DVI. Garmin adds Mac support to Forerunner 405, 50

Mozilla, Skype line up to support jailbreaking

San Francisco City Hall gets its own electric vehicle charging stations
It's a long way from the city-wide infrastructure that GM and others envision, but San Francisco has now at least taken one more step in that direction with three new Smartlet electric vehicle charging stations installed right outside City Hall. Haier shows off mysterious "NetBooks," Android phones
Haier's offerings are always an adventure, and this year at MWC they didn't disappoint. They were showing off an interesting assortment of MIDs, confusingly dubbed "NetBooks," including a mini-laptop of sorts (left) that falls somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, we're totally short on specs, release dates or other sorts of relevant informations, so what you see is pretty much what you get. Palm Pre no longer features data tethering on Sprint website
Sigh, we knew it was too good to be true -- data tethering has been removed from the Palm Pre's spec list on Sprint's site and replaced with a "connector" section. We don't know if Sprint's just trying to clean things up or if it muscled Palm into killing the feature in order to drive new Simply Everything + Mobile Broadband subscriptions, but we do know that we're having a hard time turning these frowns upside-down. Apple acknowledges iWork '09 file incompatibility
Apple has acknowledged file compatibility issues with the new iWork '09 software suite that was debuted at the Macworld Expo early in January. Users running iWork '08 will not be able to open files saved in the iWork '09 formats. Evil Mad Scientist's "BristleBot" project boosted by Scholastic / Klutz for book, no credit in sight
In an upsetting -- though somehow not surprising -- turn of events, it appears that Scholastic and partner company Klutz have ripped off the work of two Makers, Windell and Lenore Oskay. The duo (also known as Evil Mad Scientists) created a charming little droid called a BristleBot which can be easily constructed using the head of a toothbrush, a pager motor, and a tiny amount of elbow grease. Apparently, Scholastic liked the idea so much that they turned it into a kit and book for kids (with the help of Klutz), but failed to involve or even credit the gadget's original creators. Google's offline Gmail demo reveals seemingly US-bound HTC Magic -- is this the T-Mobile G2?
So is Vodafone's HTC Magic the same as T-Mobile's G2? Could very well be, considering Google's little slip-up during a demo of its just-added offline Gmail support on mobile devices. As with any trade show, flashy, high-end products have a tendency to steal the lion's share of the spotlight at MWC -- but the fact is, featurephones still outsell traditional smartphones by an order of magnitude. Dell files to strip "netbook" of trademark status
Well, you knew this was going to happen: Dell's filed a petition with the United States Patent and Trademark Office requesting that Psion's "netbook" trademark be canceled. Intel X25-M SSDs slowing down with extensive use?
Intel's X25-M SSD drives have certainly shown themselves more than capable enough in the usual tests and various configurations, but a long-term test report from the folks at PC Perspective is now casting a bit of doubt onto their long-term effectiveness and speediness. Skype und Mozilla unterstützen Jailbreak-Legalisierung
Dass Apple sein iPhone OS nach außen abschirmt, ist Nutzern und Branchenkritikern schon seit seiner Vorstellung ein Dorn im Auge. Nicht ohne Grund wurden so genannte Jailbreak-Programme bereits millionenfach installiert, um Apples Sperre zu umgehen. Red Xbox 360 mentioned in PR, is probably real
So it looks like that red Xbox 360 Elite that we heard might be on its way is, in fact, on its way. A press release for Halo Wars in New Zealand makes mention of the phantom console -- the deal is that anyone buying a new Xbox 360 will get a free copy of the game, but the fine print excludes the doesn't-yet-exist red model, because it's "exclusive to EB Games." Analysts don't see Mac desktop hardware refresh any time soon
in fact, Trip Chowdhry thinks we won't see an update until 2010. Sure, Apple's desktops haven't been updated in over a year (10 months for the iMac) and are way overdue if you look at past upgrade cycles. His argument is that "nobody is buying anything right now" which is categorically untrue if you look at yesterday's Changewave research reports.
Chowderly isn't the only one who sees Apple's desktops sales falling. "iMac sales went to hell in December," said Charlie Wolf, a Needham & Company analyst.
Here's the thing: Every single person we know who wwould be in the market for a desktop has been waiting for Apple to release a new product to hit the "buy button". Look what happened to MacBook sales after their latest release. There is absurd amounts of pent up demand. Anyone else out there waiti

20 inch cinema display EOL'd
Apple today EOL'd the 20 inch cinema display. Whether that means a new 20-inch ultra-shiny Mini DisplayPort LED w/camera version is on the way or not is anyone's guess. The new 24-inch has had its fans (quality+camera+MacBook power adapter) and critics (price+shine), but it certainly seem like it is the direction Apple is headed. Rather than go up against a consortium of the world's biggest media companies, the team of programmers has complied and Hulu content will no longer be available on Boxee. Analysts don't see Mac desktop hardware refresh any time soon
in fact, Trip Chowdhry thinks we won't see an update until 2010. Sure, Apple's desktops haven't been updated in over a year (10 months for the iMac) and are way overdue if you look at past upgrade cycles. His argument is that "nobody is buying anything right now" which is categorically untrue if you look at yesterday's Changewave research reports.
Chowderly isn't the only one who sees Apple's desktops sales falling. "iMac sales went to hell in December," said Charlie Wolf, a Needham & Company analyst.

Unisys gibt Intels Itanium auf

AMD nets final approval to create The Foundry Company
After having to delay the final vote earlier this month due to a lack of participation (d'oh!), AMD has dotted the final 'i' in its attempt to spin off semiconductor manufacturing. Nokia signs €500 million loan for Symbian R&D

Who knows what dark, unreliable alleys the Commercial Times prowled to get this information, but the Chinese newspaper says that Lenovo is planning on shipping 11.6-inch and 12.1-inch NVIDIA Ion-based "netbooks" sometime in the future. Access Linux Platform 3.0 live, in person, and oh-so-full of widgets
We got a quick look at the latest version of the Access Linux Platform (ALP) today, running on an early build of TI's OMAP 3-based Zoom hardware. Access seems excessively enthused with widgets, and really isn't doing a bad job at them, featuring transparency galore and even a second home screen for housing a separate set of them (perhaps "work" or "home" or "really great world clocks"). The machine also run's Access' own NetFront browser, which isn't quite as butter as we've seen WebKit get lately, but might be about on par with Microsoft's new builds of Internet Explorer Mobile. Unfortunately, aside from a jerky, barebones "flickable" photo browser, that's all Access is showing off of LiMo-compliant 3.0 at the moment, and we didn't get a look at that Garnet O

HTC dominiert Markt für Windows-Smartphones

Hewlett-Packard meldet Gewinneinbruch um zehn Prozent
Hewlett-Packards Nettogewinn ist im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. Januar) im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal des Vorjahres um fast zehn Prozent von 2,1 Milliarden Dollar auf 1,9 Milliarden Dollar gesunken. Der Gewinn pro Aktie lag bei 0,75 Dollar. Er fiel somit 6 Prozent geringer aus als im ersten Fiskalquartal 2008. Gleichzeitig stieg der Umsatz des Unternehmens um 1 Prozent auf 28,8 Milliarden Dollar.

We've got this image burned in our brains of the Pre as this slick, black, streamlined, ultra-glossy pebble of a phone, and by and large, that's an accurate image -- unless you spring for the Touchstone. Freenet meldet Umsatzsteigerung auf 2,9 Milliarden Euro

Hewlett-Packard meldet Gewinneinbruch von 10 Prozent
Hewlett-Packards Nettogewinn ist im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. Januar) im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal des Vorjahres um fast 10 Prozent von 2,1 Milliarden Dollar auf 1,9 Milliarden Dollar gesunken. Der Gewinn pro Aktie lag bei 0,75 Dollar. Er fiel somit 6 Prozent geringer aus als im ersten Fiskalquartal 2008. Gleichzeitig stieg der Umsatz des Unternehmens um 1 Prozent auf 28,8 Milliarden Dollar.

Don't worry, this isn't the Centro 2
Okay, so maybe Palm hit its head on the corner of a goalpost in a charity hockey tournament recently (stupid ego -- no helmet) and hasn't been the same since. Maybe they've lost their ever-loving minds, gone back to 2006, and resurrected the original Centro ID with a build of webOS so janky that it looks like a knockoff of webOS. We prefer a couple more reasonable theories: someone's hard at work on a webOS skin for Palm OS (bless their heart) or Palm had used a Centro for early mockups / prototyping on webOS and the shots of that effort are just now starting to leak out. Samsung SCH-M830 hands-on
While perusing the Samsung booth for something fresh and fun we happened upon this, the Samsung SCH-M830. The M830 is a WiBro (mobile WiMax) and HSPA set, WiFI, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel camera, a 3.3-inch LCD, memory expansion with microSD, and runs Windows Mobile 6.1. The interface and all the UI elements were in Korean (see that Anycall branding? That's the hint) so if there were any special goodies in there we definitely didn't catch them. Impressions? It felt great and was really solid, but as to performance we can't add much there -- though just that big display had us smiling. Lovely gallery and a quick video flip-through follow the break.

Boxee removes Hulu, time for Understudy
Boxee got a little letter in the mail this week from ol' Hulu requesting that they no longer incorperate Hulu in their little system. Rather than go up against a consortium of the world's biggest media companies, the team of programmers has complied and Hulu content will no longer be available on Boxee. MWC day three: return of the Jedi
Okay, an Android RAZR would have been amazing, but sadly Motorola didn't announce anything at all at MWC, so our dreams are on hold for the moment. In fact, day three was bereft of any major announcements, but there was some action: Telstra boss Sol Trujillo's prototype HTC handset running Windows Mobile 6.5 was pickpocketed, we played with a few real Android prototypes, and we even saw Windows Mobile hacked into compatibility with a capacitive touchscreen. Google demos HTML5-based Maps on the Palm Pre
Looks like offline Gmail on the iPhone wasn't the only trick Google's Vic Gondotra has up his sleeve during his talk at MWC -- he also gave a quick demo of Google Maps running as a web app on the Palm Pre. Changewave throws up some hopeful Apple numbers.
It's not a pretty picture around the technology sector. But there are some bright spots in Changewave's latest survey. Although Apple's desktops are down significantly (we just heard our first tip of an desktop hardware update - more on that later), MacBook sales remain strong.
Within the shrinking overall PC spending environment, Apple (AAPL) planned laptop purchases (30%) for the next 90 days have improved 3-pts since our previous survey in January. But at the same time, planned desktop purchases (26%) have dipped 2-pts.
and Apple's customer satisfaction remains way out in front of the pack. Not a big shock there really

Hulu asks Boxee to pull content, it complies
That was short lived -- it hasn't been six months since Boxee added one of its most popular features yet and now Hulu is putting a stop to it. A real reason wasn't given -- big surprise -- but Hulu is saying it was at the reqest of the content providers. While no one really knows what Fox and NBC's objections are to Boxee, we're sad to say it actually kinda makes sense to us. Google demos offline Gmail for iPhone, Android at MWC
If you were thinking offline Gmail on your desktop was the greatest thing since sliced bread, prepare yourselves people. If an MWC keynote from Google's VP of engineering, Vic Gundotra, is any indication, the same functionality might be coming soon to an iPhone / Android phone near you. HP desktop revenue down 25%, notebooks down 13%
Amid the economic woes, HP's fiscal Q109 financial results indicate declining revenue in the majority of its corporate divisions. Adtec's just released its Bluetooth wristband, which enables hands-free -- well, sort of. The band, which is equipped with a speaker and volume control, connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth, and comes in white or gray. The company suggests one might find this little gadget useful while fishing or running.
