IBM study ranks Mac as most vulernable OS
IBM's security research and development group, X-Force, has released an annual report that suggests Mac is the most vulnerable operating system. CSR buys GPS chipmaker SiRF for $136m
England's Bluetooth chip group CSR on Tuesday announced it is buying California-based GPS chip specialistSiRF for $136 million. The deal is expected to complete in the second quarter, after approval by SiRF and CSR shareholders as well as government approval. The buy-out sum represents a 91-percent premium on SiRF's shares after Monday's markets closed.

Canon patent application offers solution for Live View autofocus issues
Canon's Live View implementation may not be a deal-breaker for most DSLR users, but there's certainly plenty of room for improvement, and a recent Canon patent application suggests that the company could possibly be aiming to do just that. The short of it is that the company seems to have found a way to overcome the inherent problems of employing so-called phase-difference autofocus in Live View, which is caused in part by the physical limitations of the mirror and the AF sensor (hit up the read link for some more background). PocketMac Backup for SalesForce saves data on Mac
Information Appliance Associates has announced PocketMac Backup for SalesForce, an application used to backup a user's SalesForce data. Intel-ARM hybrids. Could Apple be next?
At ARM's recent earnings call, CEO Warren East talked up a new type of hybrid computer platform. This platform would use Intel for serious processor intensive work and ARM as a dashboard type of OS for web browsing and email. According to East, Dell's Latitude ON E4200 is already doing this. Other manufacturers are using Linux distros like Splashtop that run on Intel. Apple has every reason to do this as well. They already have a pretty solid ARM OS with an App store and plenty of applications.

i-mate's rumored "Hummer" rugged handset set to appear as 810-F?
It's been some time since we've seen anything new come out of i-mate, and while we glimpsed the 810-F as a rumor ages ago, we're enthusiastic that mayhaps i-mate's got a few tricks left up its sleeve. The i-mate 810-F apparently runs Windows Mobile 6.1, a 624MHz CPU, HSDPA, VGA display, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a big 'ol QWERTY pad, all tacked together by a rubberized housing and some hex screws. Other notable features include a 2 megapixel camera for rugged shots, and 2.2GB of internal storage space. Warranty? It's lifelong, if it breaks they replace it. Intel to ship high-speed 64GB SSD this month
A leak from an Austrian online reseller today reveals Intel is about to launch a new, mid-grade version of its fastest solid-state drives. A 64GB version of the X-25E will use the same single-level cell (SLC) flash storage as other Extreme models and should have the same fast performance as the 32GB and 80GB versions. Palm's done with PalmOS, plans to get Pre on other carriers in 2010, speaks to patent issues
In a talk with investors Palm CEO Ed Colligan dropped a whole ton of previously undisclosed facts about Palm and the Pre. First off, he mentioned that other than the Centro making its way to other carriers, there will be no more PalmOS devices from Palm; they're concentrating completely on webOS and Windows Mobile. They also clarified that they have partnerships with carriers in Canada, Latin America and Europe for the Pre, and that they plan on expanding in the US to carriers outside of Sprint in 2010. Gigabyte to debut GSmart S1200 WinMo phone and more at MWC
Gigabyte is understandably saving most of the details for its official announcement at Mobile World Congress, but the company has let out word that it'll be introducing three new series of phones at the big show, which it says fall under the Multimedia, Business, and Style categories. Sadly, the day we were all expecting has come to pass: Windows 7 beta downloads are no longer available from Microsoft. NVIDIA shows off Ion Windows 7 multitasking, confirms launch details
We've already gotten a pretty good idea of Ion's capabilities, but NVIDIA doesn't seem to be one to turn down an opportunity to show it off, and it did just that recently at a joint press conference with Microsoft. Mitsubishi temporarily suspends production of LaserVue HDTVs
We had heard that certain Mitsubishi representatives had been telling Diamond dealers that production had been suspended on the outfit's flagship LaserVue HDTV, and sure enough, the story is true. We have confirmed with Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America that the outfit has "temporarily suspended production of LaserVue televisions due to a problem with manufacturing equipment used to produce LaserVue TVs." We're also informed that "Mitsubishi Electric engineers are taking the necessary action to ensure that the company resumes production as quickly as possible, while maintaining the highest standards for product quality and reliability." At ARM's recent earnings call, CEO Warren East talked up a new type of platform. One that would use Intel for serious processor intenstive work and ARM as a dashboard type of OS for web browsing and Email. Apparantly Dell is already doing this. Study finds horrible working conditions at Microsoft, Dell ODM factory

IDC: Prozessormarkt schrumpft um 17 Prozent
IDC hat eine Studie veröffentlicht, wonach der weltweite Prozessormarkt zwischen Oktober und Dezember gegenüber dem dritten Quartal um 17 Prozent geschrumpft ist. Im Vergleich zum letzten Quartal 2007 haben die Prozessorhersteller 11,4 Prozent weniger CPUs verkauft. Der mit Prozessoren erzielte Umsatz sank zwischen dem dritten und vierten Quartal um 18 Prozent, gegenüber dem letzten Vierteljahr 2007 sogar um 22,2 Prozent. Im Jahresverlauf stiegen die Verkaufszahlen jedoch um 10 Prozent, während die Branche beim Umsatz nur 0,9 Prozent zulegen konnte.

X-Men & Co. Comics in iTunes und im App Store
Der US-Comicverlag Marvel hat den Vertrieb sogenannter Motion Comics über den iTunes Store angekündigt. Das neue Produkt lässt sich als Mischung zwischen den statischen Zeichnungen eines klassischen Comics und einem Zeichentrickfilm beschreiben (ein Video sagt hier mehr als viele Worte).
Marvel hat sich bislang weder zu den Preisen noch zum Start der Motion Comics geäußert, sicher ist nur, dass Spider-Women und die X-Men von Anfang an mit dabei sind. Die Filme dürften dann mit allen aktuellen iPod-Modellen kompatibel sein.
Was es bereits gibt, sind jede Menge Comics für das iPhone und den iPod touch. Das Angebot von Uclick besteht inzwischen aus knapp 100 englischsprachigen E-Books

Infineon investiert 17 Millionen Euro in ungarisches Werk

Analyst sagt Einsteiger-iPhone voraus
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, sagt der Analyst Mike Abramsky zwei neue iPhones für Juni oder Juli voraus. Seiner Ansicht nach werde Apple ein Einsteiger-iPhone mit 8 GB an Speicherplatz, EDGE als Datenanbindung, ohne GPS und mit dem gleichen Display und derselben Kamera wie im aktuellen iPhone 3G vorstellen. Bose is staying mum on most of the details at the moment, but the company has just announced that it's new Energy Efficient Series automotive sound system will be making its debut in the 2011 Chevy Volt, which it no doubt hopes will be just the first of many more vehicles to follow. Nvidias Umsatz bricht im vierten Quartal um 60 Prozent ein
Nvidia hat im vierten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 25. Januar) einen Umsatz von 481,1 Millionen Dollar erwirtschaftet. Damit fiel der Umsatz im Vergleich zum selben Vorjahreszeitraum um 60 Prozent geringer aus (1,2 Milliarden Dollar). Den Gewinn von 257 Millionen Dollar oder 0,42 Dollar pro Aktie aus dem vierten Fiskalquartal 2008 konnte der Chiphersteller nicht halten. Stattdessen wies Nvidia zwischen Ende Oktober 2008 und Ende Januar 2009 einen Nettoverlust von 148 Millionen Dollar oder 0,27 Dollar pro Aktie aus. Ohne Abschreibungen lag der Fehlbetrag bei 0,18 Dollar pro Aktie.

Regenerative shock absorbers developed by team at MIT
A team of undergrads at MIT -- led by Shakeel Avadhany and Zack Anderson -- has produced a prototype of a shock absorber for vehicles which can harness and generate electricity back into the vehicle. The team claims that their prototype increases a vehicle's fuel-efficiency by up to 10 percent by using a "hydraulic system that forces fluid through a turbine attached to a generator." CSR gobbles up GPS chipmaker SiRF
Well, it looks like a few pesky patent issues weren't enough to keep CSR, mostly known for its Bluetooth chips, from snapping up omnipresent GPS chipmaker SiRF, with the two companies today announcing that they're set to fully combine their companies into one giant chipmaking operation. App Store exceeds 20,000 titles
Apple's App Store offerings this week exceeded the 20,000 mark, as the number of daily releases seems to follow an exponential curve, according to tracking statistics charted by Apptism. HP netbooks likely to run "at least" three versions of Windows 7
How many versions of Windows 7 can a netbook run? Three, and possibly more, according to HP's Kyle Thornton, who recently attempted to "clarify" the situation in an interview with Computerworld. Those include in the main Professional and Home Premium editions, as well as the low-end Starter edition which, among other things, is limited to running no more than three applications at a time. According to Thornton, HP has also been testing Windows 7 Ultimate on its Mini netbook line, although it apparently isn't saying if it actually intends to offer it on future netbooks or not. Report: Sirius XM preparing to file for bankruptcy
Sirius XM is preparing to file for bankruptcy and could do so within days, the New York Times reports. According to the article, the move might be a calculated act to pressure Dish Network and EchoStar owner Charles Ergen into making an offer for acquisition. The Wall Street Journal says he offered to purchase the merged satellite radio group late last year and was then brushed off. Despite previous rejections, he's recently reaffirmed his desire try again. If it wasn't before, the honeymoon is now officially over.

Analyst: App Store driving iPhone customer loyalty
Barclays' analyst Ben Reitzes has suggested that Apple can rely on the success of the App Store to add "stickiness" to the iPhone and iPod touch. He uses the term in reference to the lock-in effect that is likely to prevent the majority of current owners from switching to products offered by competitors, a concept he believes is a "key differentiating factor."

Verizon's LTE vendor partners to be revealed at MWC
Looks like Verizon's LTE (Long Term Evolution) service might be on track to launch this year, after all.
