PureDepth's Multi-Layer Display technology to ship soon

If you're vaguely remembering a mention of MLD, you're not crazy. Around this time last year, PureDepth announced that it was teaming up with Samsung to crank out a 46-inch Multi-Layer Display LCD. Fast forward to now, and we're hearing that the first MLD wares should be hitting the streets relatively soon. The technology itself consists of building displays that are in fact two or more layers of LCD panel that share a common back-light source, thus creating a depth effect when viewing material. Neww iMac: Montevina Inside
With the new iMac, Apple released its first hardware model based on the new generation of Intel mobile platform, known as Montevina, the successor of Santa Rosa. This new generation was supposed to be officially unveiled during the worldwide renowned Computex Taipei 2008, taking place on June 3-7, 2008. So Apple seems to have had a special agreement with Intel, and is the first manufacturer to release a computer based on Montevina.
Montevina supports the 45-nm Penryn Core 2 Duo processor currently used in the last version of Santa Rosa (MacBook and previous iMac). But it also opens the doors to Core 2 Duo supporting faster FSB to 1066 MHz, higher clocked CPU from 2.26 GHz to 3.06 GHz, support for SSE4 instruction set. The power consumption should also be lower, but the high-end CPU will should not end-up in the next revision of Montevina-based MacBook Pro.
The Montevina Intel Mobile 45 Express chipset, also known as Cantiga, will bring new and promising Intel GMA X4500 graphic unit.

TomTom profits drop 83% due to price cuts
Filed under: GPSThe war for the low end of the GPS market promises to be a bloody one, and it looks like TomTom's suffered the first major injury: quarterly profits at the device maker dropped 83 percent from last year, and the company says it's due to competitive price cuts. TomTom made a net profit of just €7.3M ($11.4M) this quarter compared to €44M ($66.2M) last year, results which led the company to lower its outlook for the entire year. Upcoming MacBook Air SSDs to be made by STEC (not Samsung)
According to Barron's and B. Riley analyst Salomon Kamalodine, STEC will be making the solid State drives in future Apple products. The 64Gb SSD's on current MacBooks are manufactured by Samsung. High end MacBook Air owners were upset recently when their SSD Hard drives showed little performance increase and battery life over 1.8" hard drive equipped macbooks.
Hopefully STEC can up the performance and lower the cost of entry to this technology. They currently offer SSDs in capacities ranging from 73 -512GB.

Wii fit is selling like gangbusters in Europe

Apple quickly updated the price of the Mac mini on the European Apple Store, probably to reflect the currency rate between USD and Euro, and/or to avoid the growing gray market in Europe. The new prices are:

Doch neben dem schnellen Consumer-Mac, der viele Nutzerherzen höher schlagen ließ, gab es noch eine weitere Veränderung im Apple Store: Der Mac mini wurde im Preis deutlich reduziert und damit an den schwachen US-Dollar angepasst. Mac OS X auf "normalen" PCs
Wer bislang Mac OS X auf Nicht-Apple-Hardware betreiben wollte, musste sich meist durch unzählige Anleitungen kämpfen und beim Modifizieren des Mac-Betriebssystems einige Experimentierfreude vorweisen können. Der Hacker "eddi11c" hat, wie Golem berichtet, vor kurzem aber ein für den Einsatz auf "normalen" Computern präpariertes Mac OS X Leopard in Umlauf gebracht, welches die Installation deutlich vereinfachen soll. Das macht das DVD-Image mit dem Namen "Leo4allv3" aber nicht minder illegal: der urheberrechtlich geschützte Code von Leopard wird in "Leo4allv3" etwa über Tauschbörsen weiterhin komplett illegal verbreitet.

Apple targets 25 million iPhone v.2 sales
Apple has aggressive sales targets for its next-generation 3G iPhone, anticipating 20-25 million units of the new device to be sold within the product’s lifecycle.
This news leaked from the Far East this morning, where long-time Apple partner, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), has once again been named as being contracted to manufacture the new device, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times. Foxconn also manufactures the current iteration of the iPhone.
Component suppliers are on scramble now to ship their parts by the end of May, with shipments of the device expected to exceed three million units in June. This would assume to reach well into 2009 (assuming 1 year product cycles that Apple seems to have on iPods and iPhones).

Damals hieß er noch iTunes Music Store, kam ohne Podcasts und Serien und war Anfangs nur in den USA verfügbar. Von Apple am 28 April 2003 gestartet bietet der iTunes Store nun satte 10.000.000 Songs - 50 mal mehr als die 200.000 Tracks des Anfangs-Angebotes. In Deutschland können wir seit Oktober 2003 auf den iTunes Store zugreifen, der sich immerhin bis September 2006 noch iTunes Music Store nannte. Security researchers have identified a fresh vulnerability in QuickTime for Windows, which they claim can allow hackers to take control of infected machines.

Panasonic steigert Gewinn um 30 Prozent
Der japanische Elektronikkonzern Matsushita Electric Industrial alias Panasonic legte heute Zahlen für sein am 31. März abgeschlossenes Geschäftsjahr vor. Need more unsubstantiated evidence that the 3G iPhone is near. Good, the Chinese language Commercial Times is quoting sources claiming that Foxconn -- the maker of the 1st gen iphone -- is ramping up 3G iPhone assembly by "the end of May" to ship 3 million units in June. It's expected to produce some 24-25 million units before the product reaches end of life. Apple Store down - new iMacs imminent?
Apple’s online retail store in the US and the UK is down, as anticipation climbs the company plans to introduce new model iMacs this week.
Introduction of the new Macs was anticipated to take place tomorrow, but Apple may have bought this forward for reasons of its own. Equally, Apple may simply be indulging in site maintenance of its retail store while the US sleeps. We’ll know more later.
The new iMac range is set to ship at the same price points as before, though it’s possible the number of available models will be reduced (at this stage we anticipate a 20-inch and a 24-inch model, but this is likely based on incomplete information).

Anfang 2007 gründete Kroah-Hartman das "Linux Driver Project". In dessen Rahmen bietet er Firmen an, kostenlos für sie Treiber zu schreiben, wenn diese ihm Spezifikationen zur Verfügung stellen. Rund 300 freiwillige Programmierer konnte er für dieses Vorhaben gewinnen, nur: es gibt bisher nicht so viele Firmen, die das Angebot annehmen, da ihre Hardware in der Regel schon unter Linux läuft. Tatsächlich, so Kroah-Hartman, unterstützt Linux heute mehr Geräte als jedes andere Betriebssystem. Eine Aussage, die ihm auch von Microsoft bestätigt wurde. Freenet hat gestern einen Vertrag zu Übernahme der Debitel Group unterzeichnet, die aus der Debitel AG, der Talkline GmbH und der Dug Telecom AG besteht. Wie beide Unternehmen mitteilten, hat sich Freenet mit dem Debitel-Eigner Permira geeinigt. Der Aufsichtsrat der Hamburger Freenet hat dem Erwerb bereits zugestimmt. SSD in 25% of Notebook by 2011
According to http://www.macsimumnews.com, Toshiba CEO predicts that 25% of notebook will sport SSD by 2011. HE expects 133% annual growth for this market over the next couple of year.
Of course, Toshiba with its current SSD offer ranging from 32 to 128 GB models is preparing to take a large stack of this growing market. During this interview, Toshiba CEO announced a 256 and 512 GB model in a near future.
Standard HD manufacturers will have to keep racing for offering larger storage space to compensate performance and access time when compared to SSD.

The help of Goggle to Yahoo creates problems

NVIDIA's GeForce 9600 GSO series GPUs get official

As of tonight NVIDIA's got one more notch to add to that bed post: the GeForce 9600 GSO, which is a little more on the cheap date end of the spectrum. The first of the card-makers to launch their 9600 GSO is EVGA, with a 650MHz, 384MB / 1900MHz DDR3, PCI Express 2.0 ditty (e-GeForce 9600GSO Superclocked 384MB), as well as an even lower end 550MHz, 384MB / 1600MHz version (e-GeForce 9600GSO 384MB). Rumors swirl of Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic

Details are fuzzy right now -- and what details there are have been officially denied -- but the Japanese press is having a bit of a field day over the possibility of a Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic. Apparently Goldman Sachs, Sumitomo, and Daiwa own some 67% of Sanyo's equity, and as Japanese paper Yomiuri reports, are looking at the possibility of transferring said equity to or otherwise forming a partnership with Matsushita. Again, both Matsu and Sanyo are denying the report as of now, so it's still up in the air as the salarymen figure out whether to combine both companies to make a corporate entity larger than even Hitachi.[Via
