Blackberry 9000 release rumors swirl

Let's preface this by saying that we honestly have no idea what's going on with the hot BlackBerry 9000, but Fortune is reporting that it's delayed due to either a) AT&T concerns over call quality; b) AT&T concerns over launching a 3G Blackberry and the 3G iPhone at the same time or; c) or something else entirely. That's news to our homeboy Boy Genius, who thinks Fortune needs to start double-checking its model numbers and code names before it starts rumor-mongering, and points out that he's been on top of power-management-related 9000 delays for a while now. Apple happy with Intel, PA Semi purchase for iPod, iPhone
Apple's purchase of PA Semi doesn't mean the company's relationship with Intel is cooling off, Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the Wall Street Journal.
The relationship between Apple and Intel is still strong, Jobs said, "We have a great partnership with Intel. We expect that to continue forever.”
As 9to5 Mac reported early this week, the acquisition wasn't driven by any plan to migrate Macs back to PowerPC, but by Apple's interest in hiring PA Semi's team of expert chip designers, Jobs reassured. The newly-hired talent will lend their expertise to Apple's work developing chips for portable electronics devices such as the iPod and iPhone. Jobs explained Apple has "been involved" in designing chips for these for some time.

Safari 3.1.1 for Windows: Three Exploits Inside
After having promoted successfully iTunes for Windows, Apple is trying to repeat the story with Safari 3 by promoting its speed among other features.
However, three security issues have been spotted and could lead external users to perform some exploit on remote computer via Safari 3. If two of those issues might only lead to a system cash, the third one would give the ability to modify the URL address displayed on top of the browser window, making it a perfect tool for "phishers"
For sure Apple will have to react quickly to avoid Safari to become the less secured browser on Windows.

512 GB SSD in 2009
If we are often talking about SSD, it remains currently a product for a niche market, and only available for rather rich users. If performance are already there, the storage capacity of such drives remain low. This could evolve quickly, and as soon as next year.
Toshiba expects to release a SSD featuring 256 GB of storage space as early as Q1 2009 thank to new chips engraved at 43 nm and being produced "en masse" at the end of the year. As SSD is a "marketing hotcake", the company decided to communicate about later project and its expectation to release an even larger SDD model featuring 512 GB (with 32 nm engraved chips).
For consumer's interest, it would be great to have other manufacturers to follow Toshiba, otherwise with the lack of competition we will not experience a rapid drop of prices. Such potential will also only turn true if they can cut manufacturing costs of such memory chips, in order to offer lower capacity SSD (such as 128GB) at an affordable price.

Seagate Celebrates First Billionth HD Shipped
In a press release, Seagate claims to be the first hard drive manufacturer worldwide to have shipped 1 billion hard drives. The first HD was featuring 5 MB in 1979 and its price was 1500 USD. Until now, price per MB dropped dramatically: 1,350,000 fold, while maximal storage capacity increased by a factor 20,000. Of course, one should not forget that for marketing reason, one KB became smaller, moving from its original 1024 Bytes to 1000 Bytes (only on a marketing point of view).

The second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker
Filed under: CellphonesSo we've got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing, and numerous units are floating around in super secret pockets. A trusted source got a chance to check one out, here's what we've heard.
The first thing people will notice: the 2nd gen iPhone will be about the same size and shape as the first gen.
It will, of course, have 3G. And proper GPS!
The most noticeable physical difference is back of the phone is no longer metal -- the whole thing is glossy black, from top to bottom. The volume buttons are now chrome.
Because it's got a little less metal to deal with, it doesn't have quite as many angular edges. The battery is (still) not removable.

Warum Apple iPod-Umsatzeinbrüche nicht schocken müssen
Apples iPod-Verkaufszahlen sind im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal nur um etwa einen Prozent gestiegen, dennoch muss der Hersteller sich kaum Sorgen machen, so zumindest sieht es die News York Times. Tatsache ist, dass Apples Einnnahmen und Erfolge mit dem iPod nicht allein über den reinen Verkauf der Produkte erzielt. Stattdessen fließen Gelder auch beständig durch Musik- und Videoverkäufe über den iTunes Store und immer noch werden zahlreiche Anwender über den iPod auch zum Mac gebracht.

Nike vans went through the University of Leeds and Leeds Met University to hand out free Nike+ T-shirts and Nike+ Sports Kits this week, helping drive the student's in their ambitions to run the most kilometres in 29 days.
Top athletes will win Nike and Apple gear, including iPod nanos, Nike-branded clothes and shoes. The winning university team will also receive fifty pairs of VIP tickets to an iTunes Live From London event at Apple's Regent Street Store. The competition begins on 25 April and ends on 23 May, and there's more information on this Facebook page.

Carphone Warehouse is out of stock of 8GB iPhones following its recent move to cut £100 off the cost of the device.
The high street mobile phone retailer has been warning website publishers who are members of the Tradedoubler affiliate advertising network to stop advertising the discounted models, as they're out of stock.
"Thanks to the most phenomenal response to the promotion, The Carphone Warehouse is now out of stock on the Apple iPhone," a message from the retailer reads. "Please can you remove all reference to the iPhone promotion in your copy."
The company website continues to take orders for the 8GB model, but the retailer says it doesn't "expect to receive any additional stock at this time."

Seit dem August 2007 erfuhr der aktuellen iMac kein Update mehr. Der Ausverkauf der Modelle läuft inzwischen auf vollen Touren, sodass einer baldigen Neuvorstellung eigentlich nichts mehr im Wege steht. Bisher stellte Apple jedoch keine neuen Geräte vor. Papierne Post-Its mit RFID und Schrifterkennung
Forscher des MIT Media Laboratory wollen das altbekannte Post-It zukunftsfähig machen. Kritik an der Apple-Empfehlung, Webseiten-Icons für den Startbildschirm von iPhone und iPod touch im Format 57 auf 57 Pixel anzulegen gibt es schon länger: Grafiken im Format 60 auf 60 Pixel werden schon mal deutlich schärfer dargestellt. Microsoft veröffentlicht in Kürze ein drittes, angeblich letztes Service Pack für Windows XP und hofft damit, XP endlich auslaufen lassen zu können. Passend dazu gibt es von Apple Boot Camp 2.1. Die neue Version gibt es für XP sowie Vista 32- und 64-Bit. Neben der Kompatibilität zum Service Pack 3 spricht Apple vom üblichen Update-Duo: Allgemeine Verbesserungen der Stabilität und Kompatibilität. Sie sieht so aus, als hätte Designer Erik De Nijs einen alten C116 oder ZX Spectrum geplündert und die Tastatur auf eine Hose getackert. Die Hose soll Geek- und Design-Welt vereinen, sieht so aus, als würde sie an keinem Bein richtig sitzen, aber dürfte alleine schon durch die Position der Tasten dem Geek einige Aufmerksamkeit bescheren. VMware Fusion 1.1.2 unterstützt Time Machine
Aus Vista Windows 3.0 machen kann Fusion zwar nicht, aber unter Mac OS X 10.5.2 steht nun die Option zur Verfügung, virtuelle Maschinen durch Time Machine zu berücksichtigen. Stürzt OS X steht damit also eine Sicherheitskopie zur Verfügung, aber da die virtuelle Maschine als eine große Datei erscheint, muss Time Machine die ganze Datei sichern.

MIRA's H4V 'plugless plug-in hybrid' is surprisingly clever

We're surprised this hasn't been though up before, which means it probably isn't as simple as it sounds. MIRA's got a new plug-in hybrid in the works that skips the whole plug aspect. Instead of plugging the whole car into an outlet, you can pull out any of the three battery packs in the trunk and hook 'em into the wall. That means the car doesn't have to have direct access to a plug to be able to juice up, you just take the batteries to where the power's at and commence charging. They're calling the system H4V, and are powering the unit on lithium ion phosphate batteries.
