AquaScript paints words onto water

Apparently, water is all the rage these days if you want to get a message seen. In Tokyo Bay Monster-fashion (sans holographic video monster), a designer named Julius Popp has created a system of displaying moving text and images using falling drops of water, thus creating a kind of virtual billboard that appears to be hovering in mid-air. The system -- called AquaScript -- works by utilizing magnet-valves which expel single drops of water on demand; proprietary software syncs the valves into a "freely definable bitmap-muster" which produces blocks of images with the falling liquid. JVC intros GR-D870 miniDV camcorder with 35x zoom

We already witnessed the overseas announcement of JVC's palm-friendly GR-D850, but now it looks as if the firm is making it official here in the US of A along with a slightly (and we stress "slightly") more advanced sibling. The GR-D870 High-Band Digital Video Camera features the same 1/6-inch 680k pixel CCD, 35x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD monitor, DV in / out and 3D Noise Reducer, but steps it up ever so slightly by tossing in a SD / MMC card slot for snapping digital stills (up to 640 x 480) while recording footage to miniDV. MacBook Air benchmarks posted
Macrumors has recently tested both default configurations of the MacBook Air; the 1.6GHz HDD, and the 1.8 GHz SSD. How do they measure up to more conventional Apple portables?
Macrumors achieved the following using XBench:
Immediately, our interest gravitates toward the performance gain brought by the 1.8" SSD found in the high-end model. The performance gains correspond with what one would expect when comparing solid-state flash memory to a conventional 4200 RPM hard disk. The SSD is incomparibly faster in all but a couple tests, where the conventional hard disk pulls away in sequential writes, which has always been a weak point for NAND flash memory. Doch so manche Eltern tun sich in Anbetracht der dort lauernden Gefahren schwer, ihren Kindern allzu früh Zugang zum Internet zu verschaffen. Zumindest vor gefährlichen Chatkontakten via iChat in zwielichtigen Chaträumen kann die nun in Version 1.0 erschienene Software ChatCop schützen. iPhone-Tarife in Großbritannien erneut angepasst
Gerade einmal 70.000 iPhones sind in den ersten Monaten in Deutschland verkauft worden: Im Vergleich zu den 270.000 Geräten in den ersten zwei Tagen in den USA eine beinahe schon peinlich niedrige Zahl. Researchers devise method for colorizing metals, alchemists swoon

Unfortunately, Dr. Chunlei Guo of the University of Rochester hasn't yet figured out how to turn scrap metals into gold, but he, along with Dr. Anatoliy Y. Vorobyev, has discovered how to colorize a variety of metals. By utilizing a "femtosecond laser processing technique," the duo has crafted a method for turning even aluminum into aluminum with an impeccable gold finish. Furthermore, they've also been successful in turning tungsten dark blue, leaving reason to believe that nearly any metal could be altered to appear as a different color. Elliptic Labs shows off touchless interface for 3D navigation

We've seen (though not felt, for obvious reasons) a few touchless interfaces before, but the latest development coming from Elliptic Labs is a real treat. Jährlich lädt Apple tausende Menschen ins Firmenhauptquartier ein: Eine große Veranstaltung, zu der am 4. März 2008 theoretisch gut 31.000 Personen erscheinen könnten. Ultra rapid NAND Flash
Source : TGdailyIntel and Micron have announced a new generation of NAND chips that are 5 times faster due to a new interface.
These chips are available in 2 and 4 GB and are capable of writing data at 100 MB/s and of reading it at 200 GB/s compared to 20 and 40 GB/s for NAND currently.
Of course, one can already imagines what this would do for SSD disks; equipped with this memory, probably data flow in the neighbourhood of the 500 MB/s would be possible. This boost in speed is obtained by simultaneously reading and writing several chips.
However there remains the problem of the low density of the SLC NAND chips and their price that still stops large scale production.But if this technology could be used to boost the speed of MLC NAND chips, then there would be SSD disks able to make big inroads into the traditional hard disk market.
The mass production of these products will start in Q2.

iFixit has done the MacBook Air
As normal, IFixit has already completely dismounted their MacBook Air.
Like us, they were very impressed by the ingenuity shown by the designers of this machine.
Excellent news, if you exclude the screen the machine is very simple to disassemble. However you will need patience to reach the end since 88 screws need to be removed.

MP3-Tausch in Italien legalisiert
Was man nicht bekämpfen kann, mache man sich zu eigen. Ein Sinnspruch, der in der "Kriegskunst" schon viele Jahrhunderte bekannt ist und bis heute nichts von seiner Aktualität eingebüßt hat: Dies zeigt das italienische Parlament, das kürzlich ein Gesetz verabschiedete, mit dem der Musiktausch im Internet legalisiert werden könnte. Schuld ist jedoch eine Unachtsamkeit des Gesetzgebers, die nicht unumstritten ist. Dennoch: MP3s dürfen künftig ganz legal getauscht werden, folgt man der Ansicht einiger Juristen im Lande.

Google veröffentlicht Toolbox für Mac-Entwickler
Mittlerweile hat Google mit mehreren Projekten wie etwa Google Earth, Google Desktop sowie den Google Gadgets und einigen Widgets den Weg auf den Mac gefunden und dabei auch schon einige Erfahrung mit dem Programmieren auf der Apple-Plattform gesammelt. Einige der daraus entstandenen Codeschnipsel, welche Googles Mac-Entwicklern die tägliche Arbeit erleichtern, veröffentlichte der Suchmaschinenanbieter nun in Form eines sogenannten Frameworks.

Italy, Spain and Switzerland are next up according to a post by Macworld UK.
Spain Telefonica (parent company of O2, the UK iPhone providor) and Telecom Italia Mobile for Italy. The announcement is going down next week in Barcelona at the World Mobile Congress (Feb 11-14) according to their sources.
A third publication, Le Temps, claims that Switzerland will also carry the iPhone on Swisscom by late February. That is for the few people left who don't already have a hacked iPhone.

Infrared solar panels even work at night, but can't output energy

Solar's had a pretty rough time breaking the ~40% efficiency level over the years, but Idaho National Laboratory researchers have apparently developed a nano-antenna array capable of collecting power not from photonic energy as is done today, but from infrared energy that could be harvested in any weather (or even at night). The cell production process is even supposed to be ridiculously cheap compared to making standard silicon photovoltaic cells, but, as always, there's a rub. The grid collects its oscillating IR energy at ten thousand billion times per second, which is proving to be a challenge to the nerds behind the tech, who are working on a way to convert that to the 50-60H
