Rumors: iPad 3 thicker, four-inch iPhone 5, new MacBook Pro
An as yet unconfirmed rumor has outlined minor but significant details of Apple's 2012 roadmap. The tip to iLounge had the iPad 3's dual LED backlight leading to a rare increase in an Apple's device thickness, by 0.7mm (0.03in). The thickness would still keep it thinner than the original iPad but would show a sacrifice to get the rumored 2048x1536 display, whose density would reduce the amount of outbound light without the extra LED.

Apple could face huge potential loss if Motorola wins in German court
So far, Apple has been faring pretty well on the various patent disputes it's currently fighting against Samsung and other companies, but Apple's own lawyers agree that stakes are higher than usual in a German case that Motorola has filed against the company. If a German court upholds the order that's trying to halt sales of Apple products in that country because of the patent dispute, Apple says it might lose as much as US$2.7 billion in potential sales.

Toshiba Portege Z835 review

Apple's online store today has cut prices on refurbished MacBook Air models like the refurb. 11.6-inch MacBook Air with a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB flash storage, now $699 after a $200 discount. Droid RAZR, iPhone 4S side by side comparison video
For those of us in the US, it seems like the flashy ads for the Motorola Droid RAZR seem to have taken over the airwaves in the last few weeks. While none of us at TUAW have succumbed to the advertising (nor is it likely that we would), the folks at PhoneArena did -- and made an almost 11-minute video comparing a Droid RAZR and iPhone 4S side-by-side in everything from thickness (the Droid RAZR is thinner) to user interface.

Google counters Apple with patent on Android pattern unlock
Google has followed Apple's footsteps in getting a patent at the USPTO for the unlocking gesture for touchscreen smartphones running its Android operating system. While Apple has patented a slide to unlock gesture, Google uses a more involved pattern. The patent is called Touch Gesture Actions From A Device's Lock Screen.

DARPA tests advanced hypersonic weapon prototype, makes railgun sweat
The US Army completed testing of its hypersonic weapon yesterday, launching a test projectile across the Pacific Ocean. The glider flies at a lower trajectory than typical missiles, traveling at several times the speed of sound, making it capable of hitting anywhere on this peaceful ball of blue and green within an hour. We saw DARPA's hypersonic aircraft's successful launch earlier this year -- the Falcon HTV-2 (pictured above) managed to hit the dizzying speed of Mach 20 during its tests, before it crashed. ASUS denies misinterpreted rumors of exiting tablets
ASUS spokesman Gary Key responded Friday to interpretations of a rumor that his company might quit tablets. He told CNET that the Digitimes claims, where ASUS and others would bow out because they didn't have the ecosystems of Apple's iPad or Amazon's Kindle Fire, were "unfounded." Possibly prompted by the nature of the question, he limited the scope to Android tablets and not Windows.

Barnes & Noble shows Microsoft 43 pages of prior art in suit
Barnes & Noble in its defense against Microsoft has countered with a 43-page list of prior art that it believes invalidate Microsoft's supposedly Android-related patents. The examples often go back over 16 years and include software as far back as NCSA's Mosaic browser, the precursor to Netscape and Microsoft's own Internet Explorer. AT&T has the fastest iPhone 4S network, Verizon the most reliable

Apple claims loss to Motorola would cost $2.7 billion
Apple could take a $2.7 billion hit if it loses one of its patent disputes with Motorola, the company has claimed to a German court. In the case at hand, Motorola is suing Apple over an email sync patent. Apple has not stated a justification for the $2.7 billion figure, but put it forward as the amount the court should require as collateral from Motorola should the latter party win its case.

Analyst: BlackBerry 7 sales dropping off in past two weeks
Sales of BlackBerry 7 phones like the Bold 9900 have tapered off in the face of stiff competition, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley said in a research note Friday. Man, these hackers work fast. It was just earlier this week when Google released the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich, and a mere four days later the new OS has made its way onto Samsung's Galaxy S II. First-generation iPod nano replacements begin to arrive
As detailed late last week, Apple announced a replacement program for first-generation iPod nanos created between September 2005 and January 2006. These particular models may overheat and pose a safety risk. Registered users of these iPod nanos were sent an email from Apple directing them to the replacement program.
Though the replacement program indicates that it may take up to six weeks to receive the replacement iPod nano, MacRumors is reporting that some applicants have already started to receive their replacement iPods.

In all Apple's newest board member, Disney CEO Bob Iger, has actually received about $84,376 in Apple stock, notes Fortune. The 142 shares mentioned previously actually represent only restricted ones. Chinese App Store customers can now pay with Yuan
Apple's iTunes Store in China received a major upgrade this week. The store now accepts payment in the local currency, RMB, and lets users replenish their iTunes account using bank cards from over a dozen Chinese banks.
Previously, the Chinese iTunes store only accepted US dollars which made it difficult for Chinese customers to make purchases. Most iOS owners setup their iTunes account and only downloaded free apps. Now Chinese customers can add money in 50, 100, 300 and 500 RMB increments.
Not only will this bring in additional revenue for Apple, it may also curb iOS app piracy which is booming thanks to apps that help iOS owners circumvent Apple's App Store restrictions. This change may also cut back on "black card" usage by Chinese iOS owners. These c

iPhone 4S showdown: Verizon most reliable, AT&T rules data
A new Metrico Wireless study has broken down the cellular network performance of the iPhone 4S ni the US. Partly reinforcing stereotypes, testing gave Verizon the most reliable network for voice calls, albeit by a slight margin. AT&T, as expected, had the fastest data, since its support for a peak 14.4Mbps HSPA 3G was inherently faster than the roughly 3.1Mbps EVDO 3G on Sprint and Verizon, along with being faster than the 7.2Mbps maximum from the iPhone 4.

The upgrade critically adds support for Avid's new 64-bit editing tools, including Media Composer 6, Symphony 6 and NewsCutter 10. Also newly supported is a host of Sony cameras. Nackte werden schneller vom Gehirn prozessiert

Endlich eine Gehirnforschungs-Studie die bestätigt was man eigentlich immer schon wusst. Das Gehirn bearbeitet Bilder von nackten und angezogenen Menschen unterschiedlich schnell. An der Finnischen Universität Tampere und Aalto haben Wissenschaftler herausgefunden, dass das Gehirn schon innerhalb von 0,2 Sekunden Bilder von Nackten effizienter bearbeitet. Nicht dass in dieser Zeit sich jemand schnell wieder anziehen könnte. Badeklamotten wirken auf das Gehirn übrigens immer noch schneller als richtig angezogene Menschen. Die Balken auf der Graphik beziehen sich übrigens auf die Stärke der Reaktionen auf diese Bilde im Vergleich zu eher unaufregenden Autos.

Chinese App Store begins accepting local bank cards in yuan
Apple has opened up the Chinese App Store to payments using Chinese bank cards based on the yuan, a support document shows. The store previously only allowed payments with credit cards supporting US dollars. Using bank cards, Chinese can add money to an iTunes account in preset amounts, an option not available in countries like the US; in China, though, such prepayments are commonplace.

Mit ARM Cortex A9 und ARM Mali-400MP GPU auf einem USB Stick der nebenher noch WiFi und Bluetooth versteht und eine microSD-Karte aufnehmen kann, lässt sich der Rechner über Smartphones oder Tablets fernsteuern und mit dem HDMI Anschluss kann man ihn direkt an jeden Monitor anschliessen. France to decide on Samsung call for iPhone 4S ban on Dec. 8
France's Tribunal de Grande Instance decided Thursday that it would rule on Samsung's request for a local preliminary ban on the iPhone 4S on December 8. Samsung as expected argued that Apple's newer hardware violated its three 3G patents, but faced an increased defense from Apple. The American firm not only claimed Samsung was abusing standards-based patents but pointed to the European Commission's investigation of Samsung, claiming that its attempt to sue across Europe had been "so violent" that the EC had felt compelled to start an inquiry.

Sicherlich wird das Samsung Focus S bei gleichzeitigen Start mit dem Galaxy Nexus den Kürzeren ziehen, und man hat auch keinesfalls das Gefühl ein sonderlich anderes Ding in den Händen zu halten, als beim Lumina 800, Titan oder Radar. Nicht unähnlich dem S II im Grunddesign haben unsere US-Kollegen den 4,3 Zoll Super AMOLED Plus mit 16GB die man nicht erweitern kann genauer unter die Lupe genommen. iPhone 4S Probleme: Und jetzt keine SIM-Karte mehr

Die Probleme mit dem neuen iPhone 4S wollen nicht abbrechen. Nach den Batterie-Problemen, die Apple selbst mit einem Update nicht wirklich in den Griff bekommen hat, gibt es jetzt ein Neues. Das 4S behauptet es hätte keine SIM-Karte. Auf Woo Servers haben sie vorgeschlagen, das mit einem kleinen Hardware Hack zu umgehen und schreiben das Nicht-Erkennen der SIM-Karte einem Designfehler zu, aber auch dieser Workaround hilf längst nicht allen die mit dem Problem zu tun haben. Jetzt sind wir erst mal gespannt auf eine Meldung aus Cupertino.

Archos' new Arnova 9 G2 tablet looks to be the very definition of a mixed bag. Study: iPad has 88 percent of global tablet web traffic
A new analysis of web traffic share of iPad and other tablets suggests that genuine Android tablet sell-through to consumers may be even lower than previously thought. Apple's iPad 3 screen plans have already seen it take millions of the displays, according to claims from the part chain made late Thursday. LG, Samsung, and new partner Sharp reportedly shipped one million of the new screens in October, with two million due to have reached assembly plants by the end of November. IHS iSuppli: Kindle Fire is $202 to make, skimps on inside
IHS iSuppli revised its earlier cost breakdown for the Amazon Kindle Fire to a lower figure in a more final estimate that showed Amazon was still taking a loss on each device sold. While it's now expected to cost just $201.70 to make, that still told AllThingsD the $199 Android tablet was losing Amazon money on each sale, even before factoring in shipping and other costs. Square adds customer loyalty, printable receipts
Mobile credit card transaction company Square updated its iOS app this week to include several new features for merchants and customers. Perhaps the biggest update to Square 2.2 is the ability for merchants to reward their regular customers with customized loyalty programs. New 'first-gen' iPod nano replacements now shipping
Apple is now shipping replacement iPod nanos to customers who had Nanos from a certain batch in the first-generation production run that have been shown to have defective batteries that could, in rare circumstances, overheat or even catch fire. The new units are exactly the same as the replacements, and not brand new iPod nanos (which now hold 8GB or 16GB) as some had hoped. The original Nanos came in 1, 2 or 4GB capacities.

Apple patent suggests charger for multiple devices
A new patent application filed by Apple suggests the company is working on putting together a device that would charge multiple Apple products at the same time, including an iPhone or iPod and a MacBook at the same time. The patent is for a "multi-output power supply" that would hook up a charger plugged into one outlet into two separate voltage outputs, which means you could charge up whatever devices you have without taking more than one plug in a wall.
This technology isn't new -- the PlugBug has made quite a name for itself this year by doing exactly this, and that product is already out there and purchasable. But what's interesting here is that Apple is

Apple issues bugfix update to Xcode, now at 4.2.1
Apple today put out a minor bugfix upgrade to Xcode, now bringing the company's Mac OS integrated development environment to version 4.2.1. The update fixes a malfunctioning conversion operation, resolves an issue of "missing" developer profiles, and squashes a bug showing a locked file dialog where it shouldn't be. The updates adds to the improvements added to Xcode 4.2, which was updated a little more than a month ago.

Trick supposedly provides 'easy' iPhone 4S SIM unlock
A new guide claims to have found a way to fool a GSM-based iPhone 4S into an unlock. The somewhat complex technique from Daniel Caleb involves making and dropping a 611 call with the original carrier SIM, switching Wi-Fi off and then Airplane Mode on, followed by a well-time reboot. After briefly removing the SIM following an activation prompt, reinserting it reportedly allows using the new SIM and possibly any SIM.

Apple updates look and feel of App Store on iOS
Apple has updated the App Store as usual today with the newest staff picks and featured apps for the week, but there's one other new touch (so to speak) on the iPhone and iPad. You can now simply swipe in the App Store's featured window to flip through pages of apps, as pointed out by AppleNApps. Before, you had to actually click on to each category page or featured page, and then when you went to look at an app specifically, the store tossed you right back out to the front. But now you can simply swipe both the apps on the main page as well as apps on the category pages, and viewing an app and then hitting back just sends you right back to where you were browsing. Very handy, much less annoying than

IBM sees stacked silicon sitting in fluid as the way to power future PCs
Generally, the combination of microchips, electricity and fluids is usually considered an incredibly bad thing. IBM, however, thinks it can combine those three to make super small and super powerful computers in the future. The idea is to stack hundreds of silicon wafers and utilize dual fluidic networks between them to create 3D processors. In such a setup, one network carries in charged fluid to power the chip, while the second carries away the same fluid after it has picked up heat from the active transistors. iPad tops holiday wish list for kids
If the latest survey data from Nielsen is anything to go by, Santa Claus is going to be loaded down with Apple products this year. Nearly half of kids aged 6-12 said they want an iPad this year, while nearly a quarter of kids aged 13 or over said the same thing.
Nielsen surveyed a "general population sample" of 3000 to obtain these results, and particularly for kids aged 6-12, the survey makes Apple's predictions of record sales this holiday quarter look more likely than ever. Motorola sued for allegedly stealing Lemko geolocation code
Lemko late Wednesday sued Motorola for purportedly stealing its source code. The lawsuit accused Motorola of hiring away an engineer who created geolocation code for cellphones, only to copy the code and send it out to Motorola's Chinese offices to "conceal" it by using it. Motorola allegedly even acknowledged the code existed on its server, only to delete it and hide evidence.
