Canon unveils Cinema EOS 300C: full-frame SLR-grade video
Canon at its special Hollywood event unveiled the Cinema EOS 300C, its first DSLR-grade pro video camera. The shooter uses a 35mm-equivalent full-frame sensor and focuses on image quality first. Canon claims to have better overall color reproduction, primarily for skin tones.

Google Offers gets first dedicated Android app, iPhone soon
Google has just released Google Offers as a new discrete mobile Android app (free, Android Market). The choice lets an Android owner get daily and localized deal notifications pushed out to them without having to use a more generalized or limited app like Shopper or Wallet. They can also use the app to organize and redeem deals directly.

Nook Simple Touch seeing price drop to $99, touts 'no annoying ads'
Who says a friendly jab is unwarranted? A leaked Barnes & Noble's slide that slipped into our hands has confirmed that the touch-enabled Nook (now formally know as the Nook Simple Touch) will fall from $139 to $99 as early as November 16th, bringing with it a v1.1 software update that's largely unheralded for now. Canon launches C300 cinema camera, prepares to take on Red Scarlet and Arri Alexa
Well, we have to hand it to Canon -- this was one tight-lipped product launch. The imaging company just unveiled its C300 cinema camera at Hollywood's Paramount Studios, in front of a crowd of hundreds of journalists and film industry elite, including Martin Scorsese. AT&T takes New York City park Wi-Fi live in 11 areas
AT&T on Thursday took action on a pledge to activate Wi-Fi in New York City parks by switching it on in 11 areas. Some of the city's most famous parks, including Battery Park, Prospect Park, and Astoria Park, now give users public access. Other key parks in the boroughs are active, such as Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx, Thomas Jefferson Park in eastern Harlem, Herbert Von King Park and McCarren Park Field House in Brooklyn, Rumsey Playfield, Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan, and Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island.

Apple expands in-store pickup to all of California
Apple appears to be expanding the retail pickup option that began in three San Francisco Apple Stores. With the program, orders made in the online Apple Store can be picked up in a retail store by customers, making it easy to purchase a configure-to-order (CTO) device and still get the personalized service you need from Apple Store employees.

B&N cutting Nook Color price to $199, adding Hulu Plus and more streaming music
So, if the looming Nook Tablet's retailing for $249, what's that mean for the Nook Color? A price drop, naturally. Based on leaked slides that we've received, the Nook Color will be dropping to $199 by November 16th, but the $50 price savings ain't all that B&N's throwing your way. House freezes cellular service taxes for five years
The US House of Representatives has voted in favor of legislation that places a temporary halt on increases to taxes on cellular service. The approval will prevent state and local taxes on cellphone and wireless broadband service from increasing in the near future, though the bill only freezes the tax hikes for a period of five years.

Oink rating app for iPhone reaches App Store to rate shops
Kevin Rose's startup Milk acted on its promise and posted its first app project, Oink (free, App Store). The iOS app serves as a way of recommending particular products at a location, such as a meal or a theme park ride, and ranks them based on the number of votes. Users can search for whatever's best in a given area, and they can favorite, vote down, or give a 'so-so' rank if they think an item ranks in between.

AMD cuts 10% of jobs to refocus, recoup $128 million
AMD waited until the market closed Thursday to say it would cut 10 percent of its workforce. The decision will touch on all of the company's sections worldwide. Its cuts were officially intended to refocusi the company on non-traditional areas, such as lower-power chips, cloud-friendly computers, and developing countries.

AMD to cut workforce by 10 percent, invest savings in emerging markets and the cloud
After hitting a speed bump Q2 and making a modest bounce back in Q3, AMD doesn't seem to want to take any chances with Q4: the CPU firm just announced it's optimizing its cost structure to "enhance competitiveness and accelerate growth." In a press release, the outfit stated that it expects to save $10 million in the fourth quarter by cutting its global workforce by 10 percent and killing off a few contractual commitments. AMD says that the workforce reduction is global, and reaches all divisions of the company -- giving employees everywhere an excuse to rattle their boots. Sparrow for Mac is a popular Gmail client for the desktop that's easy to use and even easier on the eyes. Soon, its elegant simplicity will be available on the iPhone. Kodak warns it may close shop without patent deals
Kodak has quietly warned that it may have difficulty continuing operations if it cannot fetch additional funding. In its quarterly 10-Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company reported a 10 percent drop in cash holdings, down from $957 million to $862 million, and slashed its cash balance forecast for the end of the year by $300 million.

IDC: Samsung overtakes Apple in smartphones with 20% share
New IDC data on Thursday supported beliefs that Samsung had overtaken Apple at least temporarily for the lead in world smartphone shipments. The research group estimated that Samsung had shipped 23.6 million smartphones in the summer, giving it exactly 20 percent of the smartphone market and the front position. A wait for the iPhone 4S meant Apple's nearly 17.1 million units pushed it down temporarily to 14.5 percent and second place.

HTC Rezound hands-on
As expected, the HTC made the Rezound official at today's event in New York. Also, as expected, this is one multimedia-centric phone we're looking at here, starting its big and bright 4.3-inch 720p display. Despite fairly large screen size, the phone is surprisingly light and feels nice in the hand. Unlike Motorola and Samsung, however, the company wasn't all that focused on thinness with the Rezound, and the thing rocks a slightly convex back. It's a great looking phone, however. New use for an old technology brings touch input to... almost anything
Imagine, if you will, a world where everything from the clothes on your back to the glass in your hand was a touch-enabled device. MacTech 2011: Guy Kawasaki's keynote address
Guy Kawasaki was the keynote speaker for the first day of MacTech 2011. Instead of a talk about Enchantment or Bozosity, this talk took a different turn: It was about Steve Jobs.
Specifically, it was about what Guy had learned from Steve and from working for Steve. I really liked his talk since it was a bit more personal than some of the other presentations I've seen him give. It was fun to watch him walk across a photo of an Apple employee reunion and point out people and explain who they were. Hyperspectral camera captures 1,000 colors, identifies contaminents
Putting our dinky point-and-shoots to shame, researchers at Tel Aviv University have created a hyperspectral HSR camera that detects more than 1,000 colors -- something that can be used to pinpoint contaminants or hazards in the environment. According to lead scientist Professor Ben-Dor, different elements produce different colors, helping researchers identify hazards or contaminated soil without being forced to bring samples back to the lab. It works as such: the sensor analyzes sunlight as it bounces off an object, which it then interprets. Avid debuts new versions of Media Composer, other key titles
Avid has announced several major software updates, most notably Media Composer 6. The video editor has switched to a new 64-bit architecture, and sports an overhauled interface designed to speed up tasks. Study: iPad app market most competitive, but not by much
Apple's iPad currently has the most competitive mobile app ecosystems, Strategy Analytics outlined in a new App Store Competitive Index. Its subset of the App Store is deemed the most likely to give newcomers and recent launches the best chances at success. EMI, Echo Nest license out music for Android, iPhone apps
The Echo Nest, which calls itself a music intelligence platform that supplies developers with music and data, has now teamed up with EMI Music. As part of the deal, Echo's 10,000 app developers will have access to all of EMI's artists. Apple takes on porn sites in domain name dispute
Apple has filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) against seven domain names featuring the word iPhone that forward to mobile porn sites -- including one site called iPhone4s.com.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus now shipping from Amazon, confirmed to use Exynos SoC
We've known all along that the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus packs a dual-core 1.2GHz processor of some sort, but Samsung's only just now finally confirmed to AnandTech that the 7-inch tablet does indeed use an Exynos system on a chip. That's the very same SoC found in the company's Galaxy S II smartphone, so we should be looking at some similar performance from the tablet. Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition hands-on (video)
Motorola's second new tablet today has decided it shrink itself down to more manageable 8.2-inch capacitive screen. Like the Xoom 2, it still measures up at 0.35 inches thick -- to check we brought our iPhone along to compare. The Media Edition weighs in at under one pound, but packs in the same 1.2GHz processor and Gorilla glass coating of its bigger sister. In the hand, this new size feels somewhere between the older Xoom and a BlackBerry PlayBook, and Moto are gearing it as an ebook-style tablet, which will just about fit inside more capacious jacket and trouser pockets. Motorola has just unveiled two new tablets in Europe, and we've managed to get our grubby mitts on them. This one is the Xoom 2, the (almost) same-size successor to Moto's first Android tablet. Matching its older sister's 10.1-inch Gorilla Glass screen, there's now an all-over splash resistant coating (inside and out), with those intriguing cut-off corners we've seen already there to aid the ergonomics of handling the slab. Add to that, Motorola's created something it's calling intelligent grip suppression, which means you can hold the screen and navigate with your other hand without hindrance. The company is noted to have been after a former McDonald's in the Galleria del Duomo, situated in the heart of the city. Apple switchable OLED patent would lead to miserly iPhones
A new Apple patent application published on Thursday hints that Apple may have a clever trick to let it solve the problems of OLEDs on the iPhone or other devices. Its "power efficient" display would have a transparent OLED with an opacity control and a solid white background layer. By exposing or blocking some or all of that layer, Apple said, an OLED screen could show white pixels without having to put the relevant part of the display at full power.

Wir kennen die Geschichte. Steve Jobs hat damals schon versucht Dropbox als Cloudlösung für Macs für sich einzukaufen, die Gründer aber haben sich geweigert. Die ersten Anzeichen (wie dieser Folder oben), dass Apple doch seine eigene Cloudlösung im Stil von Dropbox plant, waren ja schon in Lion zu finden. iDisk ist ja verschwunden, aber es scheint einen versteckten Folder in der Library zu geben, den man mit ähnlichen Funktionen ausstatten kann. Plant Apple eine Überarbeitung der Produktlinien
Berichten zufolge wird Apple für das kommende Jahr eine Überarbeitung zahlreicher Produkte vornehmen. Ob diese Änderungen eher auf die verbaute Technik abzielen oder ein neues Design zum Einsatz kommen wird, ist unklar. Die Quelle stützt sich jedenfalls auf Zulieferer des IT-Konzerns aus Taiwan, die behaupten, dass das iPhone, das iPad, sowie der Desktop-Computer iMac und das MacBook Air eine Änderung in den jeweiligen Produktlinien bekommen werden.

Wer hätte das erwartet. HP versucht es noch einmal mit einem Windows 7 Tablet. Das Slawe 2 hat einen 8-Zoll Bildschirm, 1024x768 Auflösung, kapazitiven Touchscreen der auf Finger und Stift reagiert, kommt mit Swype Technologie und wiegt 1,5 Pfund. Etwas aufgemotzt ist es mit dem Z670 Atom 1,5GHz Prozessor und erweitertem Kartensupport (jetzt auch mit microSD und miniSD) sowie der Option auf 3G und Bluetooth 4.0 ansonsten aber hat sich im Vergleich zum Slate 500 erschreckend wenig geändert.

OpenBSD 5.0 offers more hardware compatibility, less bugs
Fans of the Unix-based OpenBSD can crack open a bottle of their favorite open-sourced champers because the operating system has launched version five-point-oh. Sprint: iPhone 4S speed problems not 'easily replicable'
Sprint is indeed working with Apple on solving problems with slow iPhone 4S connection speeds, but there is no progress to report yet, according to head of product development Fared Adib. Motorola provided a surprise quick reboot of its tablet strategy with fast launches of the 10-inch Xoom 2 and 8.2-inch Xoom 2 Media Edition. Not exactly one for the shocking column here, but Motorola has officially revealed the Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media edition today. The Xoom 2 rocks a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Android 3.2, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 10.1 display. It also offers up front and rear-facing cameras at 1.3MP and 5MP, respectively, plus Motorola's new Splash-guard protection. Daily iPhone App: Gem Keeper
Gem Keeper is a relatively new game from developer NCSoft, which usually makes Korean MMO titles for the PC. The company has released a couple of apps for iOS, but this is the first full game made for North American audiences -- and it's a good one. It's a pretty basic tower defense title, but the polish and complexity on this one really makes it shine, even among the many offerings in the genre.

Anzahl der Breitbandanschlüsse stieg im vergangenen Jahr um 5 Prozent
Laut einer Untersuchung des Branchenverbands Bitkom wuchs im Festnetz die Anzahl der Breitbandanschlüsse um 5 Prozent. Anfang des Jahres waren in Deutschland insgesamt 26 Millionen Breitbandanschlüsse aktiv, 1,2 Millionen mehr als das Jahr zuvor. Die Nachwuchsdesignerin Takanori Matsukobo hat ein Kissen ausgetüftelt, das mit seiner LED-Illuminierung vor allem Neonröhrenromatiker ansprechen dürfte: statt der Nachttischlampe spendet das Kissen namens Luminube Licht im Bett - ob das wirklich eine gute Idee ist, bleibt aber eher fraglich, weil es im Zeifelsfall schummriges Gegenlicht erzeugt. Siri tips: Don't transform your coworker into your spouse
If you don't want to accidentally marry your colleague, make sure you watch your phrasing when talking to Siri.
Following a relationship with a contact without using some kind of relative pronoun like "that" or "about" may confuse your voice assistant, as shown in the screenshot here.
Instead of saying "Tell my wife, Erica Sadun is coming for dinner," insert "that." Saying "Tell my wife that" followed by your statement helps separate the relationship from the contact that follows.
Siri does such a good job interpreting speech that sometimes it's hard to remember she's just a bunch of algorithms in a North Carolina data center. Be sensitive to interpretation quirks, and try to avoid them where possible.

iPhone 5 Release für Sommer 2012 erwartet
Eigentlich wurde das iPhone 5 bei der letzten Keynote Mitte Oktober erwartet. Doch laut Analysten kam es zu Verzögerungen, so dass wir uns mit dem iPhone 4S zufrieden geben mussten. Nun soll das iPhone 5, bei dem auch Steve Jobs angeblich mitwirkte, im komplett neuen Design im Sommer 2012 kommen.

Apple gibt Akku-Problem zu – Update soll helfen
Viele iPhone- und iPad-Nutzer stöhnen über das Akkuproblem. Apple hat sich auf Ursachenforschung begeben und ist fündig geworden, hüllt sich aber in Schweigen. Ein Update soll mit der kurzen Batterielaufzeit unter iOS 5 Schluss machen.
Zahlreiche User hatten sich bei Apple über das Akkuproblem beschwert. Die aktuelle Software-Version saugt das iPhone oder iPad viel zu schnell aus, so dass sich die Akkulaufzeit bis um die Hälfte reduziert hat. Software schlägt CAPTCHA-Authentifizierung ein Schnippchen, aber nicht überall
Ein Schlaumeier-Trio aus Stanford kann die Mensch-Maschine-Unterscheidungsmasche CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) in vielen Fällen austricksen. Das Programm namens Decaptcha von Elie Bursztien, Matthieu Martin und John Mitchell kann bis zu 93 Prozent der CAPTCHA-Texte entziffern und sich damit als vermeintlicher Mensch authentifizieren, wobei es allerdings gravierende Unterschiede gab: bei Visa konnten 66 Prozent geknackt werden, bei Blizzard 70 Prozent und bei MegaUpload sogar besagt 93 Prozent. China launches unmanned, auto-docking spacecraft
China isn't wasting any time getting its space station ducks in a row. After launching the first piece of the Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) in late September, the country has already put its first companion craft, Shenzhou-8, into orbit alongside it. Hidden iCloud 'feature' may someday challenge Dropbox
Users who have purchased at least one of the latest iWork applications and are iCloud members may be able to sync all kinds of documents -- not just iWork files -- between Macs running Lion, researchers have discovered. Putting files in a special folder inside the (normally hidden) user's Library folder "pushes" the file to iCloud and other Macs that have the same iCloud account. The feature could be sign of a future iCloud expansion, or just a bug that Apple will block eventually.

Rumors: 'real' iPad 3 in summer 2012, whole-line overhaul
Apple may be engineering sweeping changes to its device line in 2012 that could be headlined by more than one iPad design. A questionable rumor from Digitimes had the expected March 2012 iPad revamp being just a slimmer, longer-lasting iPad 2 that would start small, early shipments in the fall. Amazon's home page has a new message for Prime members from CEO Jeff Bezos, indicating that their membership plan has a new bonus: free books to read. Jawbone Up detailed: tracks activity, food intake and sleep cycles, available November 6 for $100 (video)
Back in July, Jawbone did something puzzling. The company, best known for its Bluetooth headsets, teased a photo of a colorful wristband called the Up -- a deceptively simple thing that could purportedly track your eating, sleeping and exercise habits. The outfit left out a few teensy details: the price, shipping date and, the biggest riddle of all, how it works.

Expanding on earlier reports, the newly-released iOS 5.0.1 beta for developers appears to fix an issue where, under a very particular circumstance, a pass-coded iPad 2 could be woken from sleep by unauthorized users with limited functionality. Apple releases iTunes 10.5.1b2 to developers
Late today, Apple released a second beta of iTunes 10.5.1 to developers that now includes support for iTunes Match for Apple TV as well as "a number of important stability and performance improvements." Developers can turn on the iTunes Match ability from within Apple TV's main Music menu. Apple to require sandboxing in Mac App Store apps as of March 2012
Apple sent an email to registered developers today that's bound to ruffle some feathers -- again. As of March 2012, Apple will require all apps submitted to the Mac App Store to implement sandboxing. This isn't a new development, as Apple was initially going to require sandboxing starting in November of this year. Apple has apparently delayed implementing the rule for another few months, but the requirement itself may cause challenges for some Mac developers.

Qualcomm profit climbs 22 percent thanks to Android, iPhone
Qualcomm has announced its quarterly financial information, pointing to $4.12 billion in revenues and a significant jump in profit. Android devices and the iPhone helped contribute to a $1.06 billion net income, marking a two percent gain from the previous quarter and a 22 percent jump from the same period last year.

iOS 5.0.1 beta sparks activation troubles
Developers trying to test the new iOS 5.0.1 beta have encountered a major setback as developers have reported being unable to properly activate. At least 20 members of Apple's developer forums have been getting errors telling them their devices weren't part of the iPhone Developer program, even when the device has been used for multiple betas in the past, AppleInsider heard. Judge clears Sprint, C Spire to sue AT&T over T-Mobile deal
AT&T faced a partial setback in its attempt to clear its buyout of T-Mobile after a judge rejected its attempts to dismiss Sprint's lawsuit as well as matching complaints from C Spire. Both of the smaller carriers were allowed to try and block the deal as allegedly anti-competitive. Judge Ellen Huvelle stripped out some of the claims, including Sprint's arguments that it would be gouged on infrastructure costs and have trouble getting wireless spectrum.

HP Slate 2 revives Windows 7 tablet after lost shot at iPad
HP late Wednesday refreshed its lone remaining tablet through the Slate 2. The Windows 7 hardware keeps the same outside form with an 8.9-inch, 1024x600 display but trades up from the 2009-era Atom of the original Slate 500 to a modern 1.66GHz Atom Z670 from the Oak Trail family. Game developer Ubisoft, publishers of some of the biggest franchises on HD consoles, has picked up developer RedLynx, makers of XBLA's great Trials HD, as well as a few solid iOS titles, including Thousand Heroes and the excellent DrawRace 2. Until Microsoft gives Win8 the final seal of approval, the Windows tablet show must go on, right? Right. AT&T tries to get Sprint's strategy secrets in T-Mobile suit
AT&T retaliated against Sprint's attempt to get corporate documents in a Department of Justice lawsuit on Wednesday through a court request that would potentially force Sprint hand over its own information. The larger carrier's motion to compel would require that Sprint hand over documents on 47 areas explaining how it planned to compete whether or not AT&T's merger with T-Mobile was approved. The request would ask for some of Sprint's most confidential information, including possible discussion of a Sprint buyout of T-Mobile should AT&T be rejected.

Czech Telefonica dropping the iPhone
Czech mobile provider Telefonica Czech Republic AS has decided not to sell the iPhone 4S and will stop selling all iPhone models, according to an October 27th report by Hospodarske Noviny, a local Czech paper. A spokesperson for Telefonica Czech said Apple's business terms were the reason the carrier chose to stop selling the popular smartphone.

Apple: Niederlage vor spanischem Gericht
Der IT-Konzern aus Cupertino geht wie gewohnt sehr stark gegen eventuelle Design-Kopien der Konkurrenz vor und geizt deshalb nicht mit Klagen. Als prominentes Opfer ist das südkoreanische Unternehmen Samsung zu nennen, das sich nach wie vor in zahlreichen Rechtsstreitigkeiten mit Apple befindet. Aber auch andere Elektronikhersteller werden gnadenlos von Apple vor das Gericht gezerrt. So auch der spanische Tablet-Produzent nt-k, dessen Design des bis zum November 2010 vertriebenen Android-Tablets zu nah an dem des iPad liegt, wenn es nach den Apple-Vertretern geht. Apple verklagte das Unternehmen daraufhin. Doch nun entschied ein spanisches Gericht für nt-k und dessen Design.Alles begann Ende 2010, als Apple ein Einfuhrverbot für die Tablets von nt-k bei den spanischen Behörden erwirken konnte. Computerworld releases long version of 1995 Steve Jobs interview
Computerworld has a piece of Apple history that Apple fans should watch. In 1995, a then 40-year-old Steve Jobs sat down with Computerworld's Daniel Morrow for a 75-minute interview. The one-on-one talk was recorded as part of an oral history project organized by the Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation. At this point in time, Jobs was still at NeXT and involved with Pixar. It was before he returned to Apple and took the technology world by storm with the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Goodbye Nokia 600, we hardly knew ye

Opera Mini, Mobile get data use tracking
Opera has announced that its Mini and Mobile browsers have been updated on all platforms, including Android, iOS, S60, J2ME, BlackBerry, S60 and MeeGo. A data usage view is the primary new feature available on all devices, enabling users to take a quick look at how much data the browser has used and a comparison between the original page sizes and the savings due to Opera's compression technology.
