Ice Cream Sandwich leak outs Music 4.0.1 for download, previews Google+ 2.0
A funny thing happened to the folks at Android Police, the same group responsible for leaking some of the first screenshots of Ice Cream Sandwich. iPhone 4S antenna might tread on Samsung patents
While the new antenna in the iPhone 4S should eliminate antenna issues suffered with the original handset, it may violate patents. Danish professor Gert Frølund Pedersen, who spoke to ComON along with colleagues at Aalborg University believe Apple could face a legal battle from Samsung as a further counter to Apple's original suits.

Daily iPhone App: Katamari Amore
Na naaaaa na na na na na na na, na na na na na naaaa! Odds are that by now, you've played a Katamari game, and you know the deal: Roll a ball around, pick up stuff, make the ball bigger, and pick up more stuff. That's what Katamari Amore is, and you won't find anything really new here. The music is the same, a lot of the items are the same, and with the exception of some more nonsensical words of wisdom from the King, the story is pretty much the same.

Minecraft Pocket Edition rolls out to non-Xperia Play Android devices
Well, it was fun while it lasted, but Xperia Play users can no longer claim Minecraft Pocket Edition as their own. An updated version of the app has hit the Android Market today, bringing with it support for a range of additional devices running Android 2.1 or higher -- although it's still said to be "Xperia Play optimized." Dell may be pausing Windows Phone, Android plans
Dell may be backing out of its plans for Windows Phone if not all of mobile for the near future. Claims passed on by a "higher up" alleged to WPCentral that a sequel to the Venue Pro, the Wrigley, has been cancelled along with any plans for Windows Phone 7 hardware in 2012. The smartphone might not have even gone beyond planning.

Steve Jobs' private funeral to be held today
Apple's co-creator, the late Steve Jobs, will be buried Friday, sources mentioned the same day. His ceremony was cast by the WSJ as a "small private gathering" focused on friends and family. The location wasn't being given out as a matter of respect for the Jobs family's privacy.

PowerbookMedic has launched two new display repair services for 2010 Macbook Air models. The new services include a display conversion that allows users to switch from a glossy to a matte display, as well as a general repair service. "Apple Shock" and its effect on the IT industry
It's well known in the Wintel PC industry that Apple has been kicking butt and taking names. Starting last year, Apple's iPad and second-generation MacBook Air started doing some serious damage to many of its competitors. LG Optimus 3D app converter starts roll-out this month, why settle for only two dimensions?
LG's 2D to 3D app converter will finally arrive on the Optimus 3D (AKA the Thrill 4G) this month. In order to play nice with it, apps and games need to be using OpenGL. Today Apple's online store is offering price breaks on refurbished MacBook Pros, iPods and more. At the low end of the MacBook Pro pricing scale is the 13.3-inch MBP with a 2.3GHz Intel dual-core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive, now $1019 after a $180 price cut. The 15.4-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.53GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive is now $1439 after a $260 discount.

AT&T pushing Apple to have iPhone 4S show '4G'
AT&T is pressing Apple to give in to its network marketing strategy with the iPhone 4S, an internal memo slipped out on Friday. It's "working with Apple" to patch in a change where the new iPhone will show "4G" near its signal indicator when on the HSPA+ network. CinemaNow strikes deal with Intel, adds new movies in 1080p HD
CinemaNow's movie library is about to get a bit larger and a good deal sharper, thanks to a new deal with Intel. Yesterday, the video on-demand service announced that it's now offering a slate of 1080p HD movies for the first time, available on PCs packing a second generation Intel Core CPU. Early adopters penalized $85 for sticking with AT&T
So we're hanging around in the TUAW back room, drinking coffee and comparing iPhone 4S war stories when I point out that I could have saved a bit of cash by cancelling AT&T and hopping over to Verizon.
AT&T penalizes many of its first-day-iPhone 4 customers by $250 for buying the first-day iPhone 4S. Verizon and Sprint do not. If you stood on line to buy your AT&T iPhone 4, your current cancellation penalty (your ETF) is likely to hover around $165 unless you're a preferred customer. (You can calculate that value over at Wolfram Alpha.)

Amazon brings Kindle and associated ebook shop to France
France is getting the Kindle! No, seriously, until now the land of baguettes and Nicolas Sarkozy has had to make do without the world's most popular ebook reader. Starting today though, our French friends can pre-order a Kindle (no touch and no keyboard) for €99 and have access to over 825,000 titles from the newly launched Kindle store. Hong Kong student's Jobs graphic leads to merch, job offer
A graphic created by a 19-year-old student at Hong Kong's Polytechnic University School of Design, Jonathan Mak, is enjoying massive popularity, Reuters reports. The image is a take on the standard Apple corporate logo, but with the "bite" replaced by a silhouette of Steve Jobs' head. Reuters notes that following Jobs' death, the graphic has become so popular online that caps and t-shirts with it are being sold an eBay, and Mak himself has received a job offer.

International iPhone 4S shipping dates already showing delays
That didn't take long. Just hours after preordering for the new iPhone 4S began, Electronista is reporting that international orders for the new phone are already showing ship dates of one to two weeks.

iPod nano seventh-gen teardown shows jump to SanDisk flash
A new teardown of the seventh-generation iPod nano has uncovered more changes than the otherwise modest update would suggest. iFixit discovered that Apple has switched from its favorite flash memory suppliers, Samsung and Toshiba, to SanDisk. While SanDisk has often partnered with Toshiba in the past, the step will see the company for the first time end up making flash memory for the iPod it had said it could defeat years ago.

News about Toshiba's ultra-thin AT200 tablet has been patience-testingly slow since we went hands-on at IFA a month ago. Eddie Murphy's Tower Heist gets fast-tracked to Comcast VOD, $60 saves a trip to the theater
Perhaps you're not a fan of sticky floors, armrest sharing or simply other people. News: Best Buy launches iPhone 4S pre-orders
Best Buy has started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S. The big-box retailer was apparently offering only 64GB black and white AT&T models for pre-order online—both of which have since sold out—but lists a number of models as available in-store. Best Buy begins taking online, in-store iPhone 4S preorders
Best Buy has begun accepting online and in-store preorders for the iPhone 4S. As with orders through Apple and its initial carrier partners, the retailer is promising availability on October 14th. One difference is the company's trade-in program, through which people can get a gift card worth up to $300 with the sale of an old phone in good condition. Google, Samsung: Nexus event moved out of respect for Jobs
Google and Samsung have confirmed that their decision to delay the Galaxy Nexus introduction was in respect for the death of Steve Jobs. The two wanted to give space for mourning. The cancellation of its CTIA presentation hadn't delayed the product itself but was an indication the two Android partners didn't believe an announcement would be respectful if held so soon.

Very little changed for this year's iPod lineup
Apple's announcement for its recent event said "Let's talk iPhone," and that's what the main focus of its event turned out to be. The iPod lineup did receive some (very) modest updates at the same time, but they were "blink and you'll miss it" moments.
So what's new for the iPod line in 2011?
iPod touch: Now available in white. Otherwise, it's 100 percent identical to the 2010 model. Seriously, after comparing the tech specs page from this year versus 2010, not one thing has changed. The 8 GB model got a US$30 price drop, but that's the only other change from last year. Knowles Electronics Mems Joystick for Samsung Galaxy Tab, Nintendo 3DS hands-on (video)
With gaming on tablets, the visual experience is often top-notch, but the controls are unfamiliar at best -- even inadequate at times. But adding a traditional joystick is impractical, especially when aesthetics is a key selling point for manufacturers. Chicago-based Knowles Electronics has a fairly practical solution, however, and hopes that some manufacturers will adopt its Mems Joystick. At just 1.6mm tall, the joystick is slim enough for a device to maintain a svelte profile, and the 400 microamps it consumes during normal operation is relatively negligible, according to company reps. Tablets are just the start -- Knowles built a series of prototypes to demonstrate a variety of potential applications.

RIM buys NewBay for BlackBerry alternative to iCloud
RIM in a stealth acquisition has bought NewBay for $100 million. The deal will give it access to LifeCache, a service that lets users upload and share photos and videos. It also gives the BlackBerry creator Social Networking Gateway to help update from a central hub, also inlcuding photo and video services like Flickr and YouTube.

The iPad 2 may have a souped-up processor, but Apple has never marketed its voice control handsfree features to the iPad. Those have been specific to the iPhone. You can do a quick google for "enable iPad voice control" to get a sense of that.
For now, Apple's position is this: "Siri is available in Beta only on iPhone 4S and requires Internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary by area. Cellular data charges may apply."

NI intros iMASCHINE groove app for iPhone, iPod touch
Native Instruments has released iMASCHINE, a new audio production app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The software allows small-scale music production; 16 pads, for instance, can be used to play included drum kits or individual samples, while a keyboard can be used to create elements like melodies, and an audio recorder is meant for singing and sampling. Some 10 projects, 25 instrument kits and 400 individual samples are included by default.

Unlocked iPhone 4S coming in November, won't work with CDMA
If you were planning to preorder an unlocked iPhone 4S today, you're going to have to wait a little while. The unlocked and contract-free version is available starting in November, with no specific date listed on the Apple website.
There's another bit of a surprise, although it makes sense: the unlocked iPhone 4S won't work on CDMA carriers like Verizon Wireless and Sprint. Why does this make sense? Most of the world currently runs on GSM networks. Even though the iPhone 4S is touted as a "world phone" that can run on both GSM and CDMA networks, most of the people who will use an unlocked, contract-free phone are like world travelers who need the ability to swap a micro-SIM card to get on a new local GSM carrier.

Looking back at the iPhone 4S pre-order launch
The iPhone 4S online pre-order went live last night, and the experience was hectic for me. Sales started about 40 minutes past the original estimate and customers vented their frustration on Twitter.
Once live, Apple's store site was quickly overwhelmed by customers as was the Apple Store app. Most problems appear to have been had by US AT&T customers -- Verizon customers, for example, and customers outside the United States seem to have made their purchases rather quickly and moved on.

Some AT&T iPhone 4S orders see trouble with unlimited data
Some people are having trouble carrying over unlimited data plans to AT&T models of the iPhone 4S, notes 9to5Mac. The AT&T ordering system is said to be automatically changing people over to a capped data tier, which may prompt people to back out if they want to keep their current plan. This can apparently be solved, however, by removing the "unlimited data for iPhone" option and then adding it again.

Sprint goes LTE: 120 cities with new 4G by end of 2012
Sprint in tandem with its Strategy Update event Friday is now known to be outlining a switch to LTE for its 4G. Mit dabei natürlich Spaceinvader ähnliche Dinge, wirre Animationen, Herzchen und anderes was einen Nachts so aussehen lässt als wäre man eine fahrende Disco. Survey: iPad is Kindle Fire-proof
A site called SodaHead.com, which calls itself an "opinion based community," says that consumers it's polled about the recently announced Kindle Fire tablet from Amazon don't think Apple's iPad has much to worry about. One of the site's recent polls has 61 percent of the audience saying the iPad will stay up on top as the tablet of choice. As SodaHead goes up the income scale, that opinion only gets stronger -- a whopping 94 percent of consumers who say they make more than $100,000 a year say the iPad will stay king.

Strong demand in the wake of iPhone 4S preorders has manifested quickly just a few hours after they went live. Hex introduces new Icon watch bands for the iPod nano
With the addition of sixteen new clock faces, Apple pretty much put its official stamp on the idea of an iPod nano watch. Hex is ready to take advantage of the hype. The company has released a watch band for the nano called the Icon watch band (US$40), which gives you a polycarbonate way to strap the little iPod right on your wrist.

Überraschung. Nun wird es doch nichts mit der Vorstellung des Samsung Galaxy Nexus Prime (wir nehmen mal alle möglichen Schreibweisen in eine) am nächsten Dienstag. Beide Firmen haben soeben gemeldet, dass der Start verschoben ist. Auf wann? Wir wissen es noch nicht. Galaxy Nexus / Nexus Prime seen on video with Android 4.0
Much of the Galaxy Nexus' mystery was taken away Friday after a Romanian leak and video (below). The Gadget.ro slip shows a design mostly in line with a small peek where the entire front is dominated by its touchscreen. Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) would let it use software-based buttons and, significantly, drop the search button that had once been common to most Android phones.

Samsung and Google postpone Ice Cream Sandwich and Galaxy Nexus
Color us a disappointed shade of blue, but it appears that Samsung and Google have decided not to launch the Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime, or whatever it's called) and Ice Cream Sandwich at their October 11th Unpacked event. The two companies sent out a joint announcement reading:
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.

Jobs passing could change Apple vs Samsung battle
The Korea Times is reporting that the passing of Apple chairman and co-founder Steve Jobs is likely to alter the legal battle between the two companies. Samsungís legal team are said to have held an emergency meeting at which it was discussed its strategy moving forward. Wir haben diese etwas wackeligen Bilder von einem kommenden Dell Tablet geschickt bekommen, die man natürlich mit Vorsicht geniessen muss, aber können uns vorstellen, dass es das schon länger in der Gerüchtekammer gärende Dell Peju sein könnte. Laut Tipster hat das Windows 7 Tablet mit 2GB RAM - größere Versionen soll es auch geben - einen 10,1 Zoll Bildschirm und USB und HDMI sowie Karten-Slot und Stifthalterung. Man munkelt es käme noch im Dezember für stolze 900-1000 Dollar.

Wenn man die mit einer 2-AQC (wir überlassen das den Chemiestudenten es zu einer Formel zu entbröseln) beschichteten Baumwollfetzen Licht aussetzt, dann entwickeln sie laut Medgadget die Fähigkeit Bakterien und Pestizide abzuweisen. Gut also für Baumwollfarmer. Oder Menschen die im Krankenhaus arbeiten. Andere organische Verbindungen müssen auch dran glauben. Wir haben ein wenig Angst vor solchen Entwicklungen, vor allem wenn sie in kürze schon auf den Markt kommen könnten, hoffen aber die EU nimmt den Forschungen der University Of California in Davis noch mal mit einer Extra-Prüfung unter die Lupe.

iPod nano: Speicher zukünftig von SanDisk statt Toshiba

Virtuelle Arme mit Hirnsteuerung erreichen die ersten Rhesus Äffchen

Miguel Nicolelis an der Duke University hat eine Methode entwickelt, mit der es Affen möglich ist nicht nur einen virtuellen Arm mittels Hirn zu steuern, sondern dabei auch noch ein sensorisches (ebenso virtuelles) Feedback zu bekommen. Der Roboter-Arm sendet nämlich auch Signale an das Hirn zurück, so dass sich das - in dieser Hinsicht eigentlich gut ausgestattete und obendrein sehr putzige Äffchen - nicht nur auf die Augen verlassen muss. Der nächste Schritt in dieser Entwicklung sind natürlich Menschen.

Later but more elaborate tributes to Steve Jobs have emerged from Pixar and U2's Bono. Pixar after some silence replaced its whole front page with a classic photo of a 1990s-era Jobs framed by Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter and President Ed Catmull. iPhone 4S pre-orders have begun on Apple's site
After an inexplicably long delay, pre-orders for the iPhone 4S have begun on Apple's online store. Orders began as scheduled on both Verizon and Sprint, but AT&T and Apple both experienced significant issues getting the ball rolling. The device won't hit Apple's retail stores until October 14, but if you'd rather not brave the inevitable launch day lines you can get your order in now. Wir haben diese etwas wackeligen Bilder von einem kommenden Dell Tablet geschickt bekommen, die man natürlich mit Vorsicht geniessen muss, aber können uns vorstellen, dass es das schon länger in der Gerüchtekammer gärende Dell Peju sein könnte. Laut Tipster hat das Windows 7 Tablet mit 2GB RAM - größere Versionen soll es auch geben - einen 10,1 Zoll Bildschirm und USB und HDMI sowie Karten-Slot und Stifthalterung. Man munkelt es käme noch im Dezember für stolze 900-1000 Dollar.

Apple yesterday was awarded a patent describing embodiments of a "coordinated group music experience," a technique that combines two emerging entertainment forms, referred to in the patent as "silent disco" and "mobile clubbing." HP launching an investigation into TouchPads shipped with Android, suspects foul play

KDDI details iPhone 4S pricing: 16GB models free on contract
Japanese carrier KDDI on Friday local time became one of the first out of the gate to detail its full iPhone 4S launch plans. Its discounts on the Apple smartphone are steep and give the 16GB model away for free on a two-year contract for 4,980 yen ($65) a month with unlimited data. Motorola EX225 and EX226 saunter through FCC like nobody's watching
Like we said, the Status shouldn't have much to worry about, but Motorola's recently outed Facebook feature phone (along with its less socially aware twin) just passed through the FCC. Acer, ASUS both trying cheap 15-inch, fiberglass ultrabooks
Acer and ASUS are both expected to try a very different strategy to dropping below Apple's price in the ultrabook arena, tipsters said late Thursday. At least Acer would start off 2012 by making a 15-inch model using cheaper fiberglass, not aluminum, to get the light weight. Samsung profit to beat on smartphones, still down yearly
Samsung gave a last-minute estimate for its summer quarter that was much better than expected but not as good as last year. It expected an operating profit for the entire company equivalent to $3.5 billion based on sales of $37.8 billion. More tributes remarking on the life and legacy of Apple Co-Founder and Chairman Steve Jobs have come in from several significant names in the tech world, including Dr. Tim Berners-Lee, widely credited with inventing the World Wide Web and the modern Internet; Adobe's president and founders; and Lee Clow, who worked closely with Jobs at Apple's long-time ad agency TBWA, and one of the people responsible for the company's groundbreaking "1984" Macintosh commercial.

Nuance reportedly buying Swype for $100 million
It's only been about a year since Nuance traced Swype's finger gliding input method with QuickType, but it seems like the firm is ready for the real deal: Michael Arrington says it's nabbing the Seattle-based startup to the tune of $100 million. iPhone 5: LTE-iPhone erst im zweiten oder dritten Quartal 2012 möglich
Was hätte das iPhone 5 haben können, was das iPhone 4S nicht hat? Abgesehen von einem neuen Design realistisch gesehen wohl nicht viel. Einige Beobachter hatten allerdings bis zu Apples Präsentation am vergangenen Dienstag auf ein iPhone mit LTE-Chip gehofft. Apple University to train executives in 'The Apple Way'
Almost exactly three years ago, Apple made a high-profile hire for a low-profile position: it recruited the dean of Yale's Business School, a professor named Joel Podolny, to run Apple University -- a project aimed at imprinting then-CEO Steve Jobs' philosophies and vision onto Apple employees. Jobs himself meticulously planned the concept of Apple University based on a similar success story at Pixar, and saw it as a way to continue his legacy, the LA Times reports.

Nuance said buying Swype for over $100 million
Nuance has reportedly bought Swype in a deal worth over $100 million based on new tips late Thursday. The deal would support its existing ownership of the T9 keyboard system with an advanced, full QWERTY layout. Uncrunched in getting word of the deal didn't get Nuance's intentions.

eFun announces $300 Nextbook Premium 8 Android tablet
The Nextbooks 1 through 7 may not have caused much of a ripple in the Android tablet market, but eFun is keeping at it, and has now rolled out its new Nextbook Premium 8 model. There's still no Honeycomb to be found on this one (just Android 2.3), but you do get a slightly larger 8-inch capacitive screen, as well as a Rockchip RK2918 processor, 4GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera -- plus Kobo's eBook Store app preloaded (though there's no mention of Android Market). Google's Schmidt: Jobs was ahead on tablets, deep family man
Google chairman Eric Schmidt reminiscence over Steve Jobs revealed that the Apple CEO had talked about making tablets but that he hadn't seen a need for Google to follow suit. Jobs always had a better sense of what was possible in the long-term future for what became the iPad where Schmidt was focused only on what had gone before, Bloomberg heard. Remembering Steve Jobs: TUAW looks back
Steve Jobs has changed the life of every single blogger at TUAW in some way. I am not overstating this, because if it weren't for Apple Inc, there'd be no TUAW, so none of us would write for it, and we wouldn't know each other.
I'm putting this post together from an airport. I just worked on a project with two other TUAW staffers that involved iPads, and we were on a Disney property to do it. This week has had a very high Steve Factor for me, and I was actually thinking before the iPhone event about how grateful I am for what Steve contributed to the world. I said it on Twitter and I'll say it again:
Steve Jobs, 1955-2011. That was a most impressive dash.

AT&T iPhone 4S launch sales may stop at one per person
New discoveries have suggested that AT&T, and possibly Apple, will be tight on supply but open with exchanges once iPhone 4S orders start. Training notes allegedly reveal that, during the launch phase, only one phone will be allowed per person, no matter what their upgrade status.
