Amazon focusing on 'lifetime' Kindle revenue, anticipating record device sales for Q4
Today's Amazon earnings were decidedly split -- the company revealed both a 44-percent increase in net sales and a 73-percent decrease in net income. So, why the discrepancy? It may at least partially be due to the much discussed suggestion that the company actually loses money for each Kindle sold -- a trend which, if true, has likely only been compounded by the release of the uber-cheap ad-supported version of the device. IBM announces Virginia Rometty as new CEO
IBM's board of directors have announced that Virginia M. Rometty will be taking over as CEO of the company in 2012, succeeding current chief Samuel Palmisano. Palmisano will stay on as chairman of the board, but at the end of the year will hand over the reins to Rometty who will become one of a few, but growing number of female chief executives (alongside Meg Whitman) in the tech industry. Sony rumored to be after Aaron Sorkin for Steve Jobs movie
Sony is treating Aaron Sorkin its top choice for writing the upcoming Steve Jobs movie, the Los Angeles Times reports. The paper's information is said to come from an anonymous source briefed on the film. Sorkin has allegedly been considering the job, but as of yesterday had not made a decision.

Freescale joins ARM A5 and M4 cores at the hip for performance and power savings
You may have noticed a trend recently -- pairing slightly less powerful cores that sip power, with more robust ones that can chug through demanding applications. Apple patents microstrip cellular antenna for future gear
The US Patent and Trademark Office has revealed an interesting Apple patent for a microstrip-style cellular antenna. Its ideal application could include wearable electronics such as wristwatches, next-generation notebooks and other gear. It would be capable of cellular and Wi-Fi frequencies.

Amazon net sales up, net income down for Q3 2011
Amazon pulled back the financial curtain for Q3 2011, revealing $10.88 billion in net sales for the quarter, a 44 percent jump over this time last year. Net income, on the other hand, decreased 73 percent year over year, down to $63 million. The quarter also saw the company's "biggest order day ever for Kindle," according to CEO Jeff Bezos -- September 28th, the introduction of three new reader devices from the company. The company's Q4 report will likely be affected by the coming launch of the Kindle Touch and the long-awaited Fire tablet.

PlayBook 2.0 may wait until February, fall short of iMessage
The promised BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 update might not arrive until February if rumors from within RIM prove true. Despite promises by company CEOs that the update would be available soon after it was shown off at BlackBerry DevCon last week, BGR understood the tablet wouldn't get native e-mail and other basics until mid-February, possibly February 17. RIM's problems overcoming the one-device limit inherent to the BlackBerry has reportedly proven tougher to overcome than once thought.

BYD opens North American HQ in LA, electric bus headed for LAX
China's BYD Motors has been edging its way into the North American auto market for some time, but it's now firmly planted itself here by opening its new headquarters in Los Angeles. Apple wins patent on 'Slide to Unlock' iOS gesture
The US Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Apple a patent on the "Slide to Unlock" gesture used on iOS devices. Apple wording refers mainly to unlocking "if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device," using certain feedback cues as necessary. Specifically, though, diagrams depict a rough version of the slidebar seen on the iOS lock screen.

Gameloft starts trading shares in the US
Gameloft is one of the standout companies on iOS. While the company has received criticism for "borrowing" some gameplay themes and ideas from more popular console titles, there's no question that it has still worked hard on quality games, and picked up a lot of iOS sales for it.
Gameloft is based in France, but has announced that it will start trading on the US market by selling American Depositary Receipts, which are a kind of representation of a foreign stock on the American market. Panasonic may shrink its LCD sizes to combat slow sales
Panasonic is exiting the small-to-mid-sized TV LCD panel business. Instead, according to the Japanese news service Nikkei [subscription required], it will focus on producing panels for tablets and 50-inch and larger TV panels. The company has claimed that demand for the smaller TVs has dropped since the Japanese government stopped offering subsidies for energy efficient appliances, effectively making the larger screens more attractive.

Sprint plans for LTE-Advanced 4G in early 2013
Sprint is planning on rolling out LTE-Advanced technology on its 800MHz network during the first half of 2013. Sprint's vice president of network development and engineering, Iyad Tarazi, promised the quick upgrade to the nearer-term LTE network at the 4G World conference in Chicago. Using the technology, Sprint believes it can achieve download speeds of between 12Mbps and 15Mbps in real-world conditions, which compares to what Verizon gets with its regular LTE.

BlueBiped robot needs no power to walk for miles, as long as it's downhill (video)
The robots; they're walking -- and this one's doing it under its own steam. This passive robotic frame requires no energy input, and is instead powered by its own weight and a gentle slope. The BlueBiped can be adjusted to match the proportions of any user, and researchers plan to use it to assist people who find it difficult to walk and transport unwieldy sports equipment. Registrations open for rebranded Macworld|iWorld event
Organizers have opened up registrations for Macworld|iWorld, a rebranded Macworld Expo. The event is scheduled for January 26th through the 28th at the Moscone West center in San Francisco. The name change is meant to emphasize the iOS side of the gathering. iWorld will also include new Music Experience and Film Event tracks, featuring media and performances created with Apple products, as well talks with some of the people involved. Steve Jobs once wanted Intel for iPad, picked size carefully
The hot-selling biography of Steve Jobs has revealed that the Apple CEO at one point wanted to use Intel's Atom chip for the iPad. He had contended that Intel was reliable for mobile chips, even when the iPhone was already shipping with ARM. Then-key executive and later Nest Labs founder Tony Fadell was not only adamant that ARM would be better but even threatened to resign on the spot at a board meeting where Jobs was making the case for the Atom.

LG DoublePlay likely to see single release for T-Mobile on October 26th

Apple, Oreo and Capri Sun top list of popular youth brands
Harris Interactive put together a survey asking American youth from ages 8-24 what their favorite brands were, and Apple came out on top in the computer, tablet, and phone space. That's not too surprising, given how powerful Apple's marketing is (not to mention how great its products are), but it is true that "the old" Apple tended to go for the slightly older audiences. Since the introduction of the iPod ten years ago, Apple's marketing and products have skewed younger and younger.

Nokia to announce QWERTY Symbian phone tomorrow?
See those boxes up there? They appear to contain a yet-to-be-announced QWERTY phone, that also seems to be running Symbian. We were able to get a quick glance at the phones from above as Nokia reps were discretely unpacking boxes for that little three-wheeled vehicular contraption parked behind the boxes. Another picture (after the break) reveals a red portrait QWERTY along with the tagline "You. Me. Everyone. Let's QWERTY," along with a model number covered up by a white piece of paper. iOS 5 Safari speed gains demonstrated in New Relic infographic
Web application performance company New Relic released the results of a study comparing the mobile browsing speeds of iOS 4 and iOS 5 on the same model of iPhone. What did they find? That iOS 5 / Safari 5.1 is much faster than iOS 4 / Safari 5.0.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones slip out ahead of tomorrow's announcement
Nokia's big announcement isn't until tomorrow, but it looks like some of the surprise has now been spoiled by a leak out of Nokia World in London. New backdoor attempts to exploit Macs for DDoS attacks
A new backdoor intrusion attempts to turn Macs into bots for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and can also open them to other exploits, says security firm ESET. The malware is operated through IRC networks, and connects to one of a list of IRC servers so it can interpret commands received in a chat channel. Beyond turning Macs into bots, the malware can also enable file downloads by remote users, or execution of shell commands.

Windows XP ship date turns 10 as Microsoft fights to let go
Microsoft on Tuesday marked the tenth anniversary of Windows XP shipping by doing its best to kill use of the OS. The company's Rich Reynolds heralded the impact of XP, noting that it was there at the threshold of changes both in technology as well as in Microsoft's leadership and the ultimate rises to power for Apple and Google. China Mobile claims 10 million iPhone users
China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou told Reuters that its wireless network is home to over ten million iPhones. This number is a very small part of China Mobile's 600 million subscribers, but it's surprisingly high for a carrier that does not currently sell any model of the iPhone. These iPhones on China Mobile are either purchased directly from China's five Apple stores, converts from China Unicom which does carry the iPhone 4 or are iPhones obtained on the black market. It's well known that many iPhones being sold in China are smuggled in from foreign countries and sold to customers in open air markets.

Intel doesn't expect ultrabooks to hit $699 anytime soon
Intel's Asia-Pacific GM Navin Shenoy in an interview Tuesday said that ultrabooks weren't likely to get down to typical Windows PC levels in the near future. ThinkGeek quickly leapt on the personality of Siri in the iPhone 4S on Tuesday by previewing Iris 9000, a remote voice control add-on for the new phone. Very clearly based on 2001's HAL 9000, the combination dock, microphone, and speaker uses a remote to trigger Siri and should pick up voice commands from up to 50 feet away. Key iPod architect Tony Fadell on Tuesday brought out an unusual follow-up in the Nest Learning Thermostat. Borrowing some of Fadell's learning from his time at Apple, the Nest Labs device is designed both with very simple rotary control and intelligence that auto-adjusts based on real habits. Daily iPhone App: Whale Trail
Whale Trail is a catchy little game that combines a few of my favorites lately into a cotton candy sweet package. Jetpack Joyride is in there, as you need to press on the screen to move upwards and avoid obstacles. Tiny Wings is in there too, as you keep a cute little whale flying using swooping patterns to stay up in the air. And Baby Monkey (going backwards on a pig) is in there too, as a goofy little song plays for you while flying along.

Apple is known for its attention to detail. The layout of its stores, the design of its icons and the colors used in its promotional materials are all carefully planned. Actroid-F bekommt einen Bruder namens Kurokawa und Augen (Video)

Actroid-F, die lebensechte humanoide Roboterdame von AIST Open Lab, war bisher nur solo unterwegs, jetzt hat sie einen Bruder bekommen, der Kurokawa heisst und zwei Kameras als Augen. Canon posts higher profits in Q3 earnings report, lowers outlook over Thai flood concerns
Things are looking pretty rosy for Canon these days, though there may be some difficulty on the horizon. Today, the camera maker published a rather strong Q3 earnings report, just a few months after posting relatively ho-hum Q2 results. Mehr App-Downloads: Android zieht an iOS vorbei

ABI Research hat ermittelt, dass Android inzwischen für 44 Prozent aller App-Downloads weltweit verantwortlich ist, iOS dagegen nur noch für 31 Prozent. Das liegt unter anderem daran, dass auf jedes installierte iOS mittlerweile 2,4 Android-Installationen kommen und der Abstand immer größer wird, so dass er bis 2016 das Dreifache betragen soll. iOS-User installieren jeder für sich trotzdem noch mehr Apps: auf jede installierte Android-App kommen zei installierte iOS-Apps. ABI erwartet insgesamt 29 Milliarden App-Downloads für 2011, 2010 waren es noch 9 Milliarden.

HP webOS VP Richard Kerris leaves for 'outside' job
HP's decision to quit webOS hardware had another ripple effect after its webOS Worldwide Developer Relations head Richard Kerris left the company. The departure is immediate and doesn't have a known replacement. While amicable, HP said he had left to take an "opportunity outside of the company," according to a statement.

Ive: Steve an inspirational friend, but also a credit hog
As more details and tidbits from the Walter Isaacson-penned biography of Steve Jobs pour out, one of the voices not much mentioned in early reports but who plays an increasingly prominent role at Apple is that of the man Jobs often described as his "best friend" and which Isaacson refers to as his "soul mate," Apple Vice President of Design Jonathan "Jony" Ive. The picture he paints of Jobs is one of a close friend, relentless manager, and a bit of a credit-stealer.

Pegatron faces pollution, iPhone, ASUS tablet criticisms
Apple's frequent iPhone supplier Pegatron is under Chinese government scrutiny for pollution, the company mentioned on Monday. Similar to the problems faced by Catcher, environmental studies mentioned by Digitimes had Pegatron accused of excess pollution, such as waste gas or simply noise pollution. Two of its subsidaries have also been fined for releasing polluted water into the public stream.

Westone intros 4R quad-driver earphones with removable cable
Westone has expanded its earphone lineup with the 4R, a new quad-driver design that is claimed to offer a range of upgrades geared for audiophiles. The symmetrically-balanced armature drivers are connected to three-way crossovers to separate frequencies, ranging from 10Hz to 18kHz, while the earpieces are said to be acoustically matched to with a +/- 2dB tolerance.

ViewSonic rolls out $200 ViewPad 7e Android tablet
We've already seen it available for pre-order at Amazon and spent a bit of time with it ourselves last month, but ViewSonic's only just now officially getting its ViewPad 7e Android tablet out the door. It'll be available by the end of the month if it hasn't hit retailers already and, as expected, it will set you back an even $200. Apple settles iTunes gift card class-action lawsuit
Apple has opted to settle a long-standing class-action lawsuit brought about by the change in pricing to some songs in the iTunes Store and the wording on gift cards that were available for purchase at the time, AppleInsider reports. Originally filed by Gabriel Johnson in July of 2009, the lawsuit charged Apple with deception by distributing cards that stated songs cost 99 cents, when it then raised the price of some songs to $1.29. Participants will receive $3.25 in iTunes credit.

Daily iPad App: Seahaven GT
Seahaven GT ($0.99) offers a simple iPad adaptation of Free Cell solitaire. I first encountered Seahaven GT a few years back and thought it was a terrific implementation of a basic card game. It is fun to play and has really satisfying interaction elements.
Then a few months ago, I noticed it had disappeared from the App Store. So I pinged Dave Hardin, its developer to see what had happened to it. Turns out that life had interfered with his iOS work and he had pulled the app for the time being.

Apple TV set purportedly led by iPod maker, unifying search
Apple's now hinted-at TV set is being headed up by one of its most experienced engineers, sources claimed Monday. The team involved is supposedly by Bloomberg to be headed up by Jeff Robbin, who helped create the iPod and the iTunes Store. He was deemed so valuable to the late Steve Jobs that the CEO wouldn't let a Time reporter get his name lest he be recruited away.

Tidying up location contacts for Siri and Reminders
My personal address book has no shame. I have contacts for people I haven't spoken to in years, contacts for people who I met at tech conferences, contacts for schools, for local stores, for repairmen, and so forth. It's one big old happy jumbled mess.
I'm cool with that.
When I want Siri and Reminders to be able to trigger a location-based event, I just throw it into my address book where it joins the hundreds of other often sad and neglected entries.
I believe this makes makes me a type "N" on Myers Brigg or something like that.
Not everyone will be happy with this kind of unstructured approach and an overflowing address book, or this kind of lack of organization.

Update: Apple TV 4.4.2, MacBook Pro Video 1.0
Apple issued two support updates today, the first another bugfix update for the Apple TV, the second a model-specific update for the mid-2010 15-inch MacBook Pro to fix issues relating to intermittent freezing of video. The 4.4.2 release of the Apple TV firmware is meant to consolidate fixes first offered in a troubled 4.4.1 update that was subsequently pulled and then re-instated due to a flaw in the update itself. Apple advises users to reset the Apple TV before applying the new update.

iPhone camera side-by-side shows iPhone 4S' leap in quality
A side-by-side comparison of iPhone camera quality by the co-developer of Camera+ (99 cents, App Store), Lisa Bettany, has shown the sheer improvement in the iPhone 4S camera quality compared to earlier models, dating back to 2007. The shots also show just how closely they compare against two frequent benchmarks for compact and DSLR cameras, the Canon S95 and EOS-5D Mark II.

Bluetooth SIG re-brands 4.0 to differentiate devices
Bluetooth 4.0, introduced in the latest models of MacBook Air, Mac mini and the iPhone 4S among other devices, is getting a re-branding courtesy of the working group that controls the technology. The 4.0 spec will now be referred to as "Bluetooth Smart Ready" for devices that use a dual-mode radio that can handle both the new spec and the "classic" Bluetooth abilities, while the tag "Bluetooth Smart" will refer to dramatically lower-power devices that use a single mode 4.0 radio only.

Sega kicks off the Halloween app sales
We've seen quite a few holidays this year get bookended by app sales, and it appears that Halloween will be no different. Sega has kicked off the spooky season by putting all of its iOS apps on sale, dropping prices down to as low as 99 cents.
Apps on sale (starting tomorrow, and going through the weekend) include the recently released Brick People, the iPad version of Chu Chu Rocket, the classic Virtua Fighter 2, and perhaps most exciting, the iOS port of the great Gunstar Heroes 2D shooter.

Apple, Sprint tackle national slow iPhone data, hint patches
A purported e-mail forwarded on Monday has hinted that Sprint's iPhone slowdowns are both an acknowledged issue and may have a purely software-based fix. Don Southard, a The Next Web reader, was read a message stating there was a "confirmed nationwide issue" with the slowdowns. The problem would supposedly be fixed in a "service settings" update, the caller heard, indicating either a carrier profile change or a firmware fix.

Apple TV updates to 4.4.2
The Apple TV has updated to 4.4.2, barely a week after releasing (then pulling and releasing again) the 4.4.1 update. That update contained a number of bug fixes, and we're assuming this one will have the same.
However, TUAW editor Victor Agreda reported that updating his Apple TV to 4.4.2 has lost all of his information and is setting up the device as if it was brand new, then showed it was still on 4.4 instead of 4.4.2 and required another "update" round before the 4.4.2 update stuck, so you might want to make this update with a bit of caution.
We'll update the post with more details as soon as they're available.
The update is available now through the Apple TV's software update.

iPad rental business is booming in Madrid, Spain
PadInTheCity is a company offering up an intriguing proposition: Rent a 3G iPad while you happen to be touring around the city of Madrid, Spain. I do happen to be traveling to Europe next year, and while I just bought an iPad for myself, I can see the benefit of not only being able to carry an iPad around, but also a 3G iPad already configured to work with the local wireless networks. PadInTheCity charges 25 Euros, or about $35, a day to rent the iPad, and they'll even deliver it to your hotel and pay for all the data you use in the same period.

Solar Ship takes to the skies powered by good deeds and sunshine (video)
The Solar Ship is a little bit airplane, a little bit blimp and all good intentions. The hybrid dirigible combines the cockpit and landing gear of a plane with the top of a blimp, the latter of which is lined with solar panels. The green vehicle can take off from and land on short runways, an ideal feature in a craft designed to deliver supplies to areas hit by natural disasters or with otherwise rough terrains. Nokia may not bring Windows Phone to US until 2012
Nokia's first Windows Phones might miss the US altogether in 2011 based on leaked ad plans. The copy obtained by AdAge showed that Nokia was still picking ad agencies and wouldn't start actively pitching phones in the US until 2012. Its details didn't preclude a US release, but it was doubtful Nokia would launch a new platform on the US without any attention.

Siri hacked on to iPad but missing key network link
Last week, Siri, the Apple voice command system for the iPhone 4S, was successfully hacked to make it run on an earlier generation iPhone 4. Today comes news that the app was hacked to make it run on a first generation iPad. Functionally, the modified software doesn't do much on the iPad, but it does provide a good proof of concept.
