Black Friday has yet to arrive, but reports are coming in that shoppers in some states are already lining up outside of Best Buy stores in order to get first dibs on this Friday's sale items, and it's no wonder with door buster specials like a 42-inch Sharp LCD 1080p HDTV that carries a sale price of $199.99. It could be paired with a Toshiba Smart Blu-ray disc player that is down to $39.99 after a 50% price cut. FCC's Genachowski seeks hearing on AT&T merger

FCC chairman Julius Genachowski issued a draft order this morning that calls for a hearing to take the AT&T / T-Mobile merger before an Administrative Law Judge. Such a hearing, reminiscent of the one held for the attempted buyout of DirecTV by EchoStar in 2002, would be held once the Department of Justice's litigation is complete and would certainly be another blockade for AT&T to push through. According to the FCC, the Chairman's order is awaiting final approval from the Commission at a later date,

Desert Bus classic gets an iOS port, for charity's sake; AaAaAA!!! coming too

Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors is one of the weirdest cult titles in all of video gaming -- it's an old game for Sega CD that was more of a prank than anything else. While it did teach you to do a few tricks, the most famous minigame in the entire package is called Desert Bus, a weird little game that's designed to more or less accurately replicate the drive of a bus between Tuscon and Las Vegas. In other words, you need to drive a bus along a highway at 45 mph for about eight hours, at which time you get a point, and can opt to drive back for another one. It's silly and kind of mean and very strange -- all the things you expect from Penn and Teller. Every year around this time, a group of folks has decided

Review: blueLounge Bonobo Series Sleeve for iPad + iPad 2

The black holder is made of 100% recycled PET fabric, with a large main compartment inside to hold your tablet—even with a slim case and/or a Smart Cover. There’s also a zippered pocket on the front for accessories. It’s not large enough to hold an Apple Wireless Keyboard, but cables, chargers, and earbuds fit just fine. Sleeve’s closure mechanism is kind of cool; it uses both a pair of magnetic snap closures and a nice-looking…

Daily iPad App: Fotopedia Japan

I'm seeing a lot of excellent photo books for the iPad, which is logical given the great image quality and portability that the iPad provides. iBooks publishers looking to send ebooks to reviewers, or who want to stir up interest in a new title through a giveaway contest, are out of luck. Unlike the App Store, publishers cannot create promo codes for the iBookstore. For iOS developers marketing their latest products, promo codes provide a critical tool. Generated by iTunes Connect, the developer's portal to the App Store, promo codes allow developers to give courtesy copies of apps to reviewers or use them for promotional giveaways. That can be a bit of an issue for publishers.

New book compiles email exchanges with Steve Jobs

A new book, Letters to Steve by Mark Milian, chronicles and explores some of the email exchanges between former Apple CEO Steve Jobs and the public, CNN notes. Jobs was unusual among major tech executives in having a well-known email address from which the public could actually get a response. In an official book description, the CEO is described as having "handled customer-service inquiries himself and carefully revealed hints about upcoming Apple products, guaranteeing headlines on blogs." In other highlighted exchanges, though, Jobs allegedly "lobs insults, bend

Early Facebook phone team lost faith in making iPhone rival

The self-made Facebook phone nearly fell apart after the team tasked with designing it realized it wouldn't come close to challenging Apple at the time, a further exposé uncovered on Tuesday. The team, nicknamed "Slayer" based on shorthand for "Social Layer," had wanted to do everything from the OS to the hardware in-house, but AllThingsD understood that its costs and required knowledge quickly became "impossible." Such limitations led some in the team to think they would never have a device that could compete with the iPhone.

iPhone 4S now second most popular camera phone on Flickr

The iPhone 4 sits at the top of Flickr's most popular camera phone list, but its days in the #1 slot may be numbered. Sneaking into the second place, a mere month after its launch, is the iPhone 4S. As pointed out by Macrumors, The iPhone 4S has climbed past the iPhone 3G, the 3GS, and the HTC EVO 4G, which is only Android phone to make it into Flickr's top five list. Though the iPhone 4S has skyrocketed into second place, the iPhone 4 has an impressive lead and will keep its #1 position for a while. It's a numbers game and the iPhone 4 has a huge user base the iPhone 4S won't rival for at least another quarter or two. With its improved 8-megapixel lens system and wider aperture, the

The iPhone 3GS, now either free or $1 on contract, may put Apple in an ideal spot to compete against other smartphone makers, claims a new Credit Suisse report. A $250-400 carrier pricetag is said to put Apple in the same range as where most of its competitors operate.

It's a lot of fun, and the ordering process looks pretty straightforward. My only real complaint is that the feedback in the app as you complete levels is sometimes contradictory. AT&T exec discusses plans for home energy management service

Verizon has already dipped its toes into the home energy management business, and it looks like AT&T is about to do the same as well. Speaking on a Broadband Breakfast panel in Washington, DC last week, AT&T Executive Director of Public Policy Jeffery Dygert revealed that the company is "in the process of developing" its own home energy management system, which would let users monitor their electricity usage and manage its use more efficiently. That service is said to be a part of the company's broader Digital Life Project, and it will apparently be marketed to both AT&T's wireless and wireline customers,

BiTMICRO's next-gen SSD controller to deliver blazing speed and big storage in 2012

NPD: Samsung Galaxy Tab sales low enough that HP outsold it

HP, not Samsung, was the ruler of non-iPad tablets in the US for the first ten months of the year, the NPD Group said in a new study. With just 1.2 million tablets sold at retail across every company outside of Apple, HP was the leader in the country at 17 percent, or 204,000, sold between its launch and October. The low count suggests that the fire sale $99 TouchPad, not HP's Windows range, was the sales leader by going on clearance.

Wild Chords is a really amazing app -- at its absolute base, it's an excellent and easy-to-use guitar tuner, perfect for kids or adults. But the real magic of Wild Chords is in actually playing the guitar along with the main game; this game will teach you, chord by chord and string by string, how to strum away some really excellent tunes. The app starts easy, with a quick tune-up and then just an open chord test, and things get harder from there. The basic idea is that you're playing along to tame animals, so you need to play the right chord as your in-game character passes t

Only the server versions of 10.5 and 10.6 were legit for VM use; for 10.7, Apple moved to allow virtualization of either client or server. In the new Fusion build, however, client versions of 10.6 and 10.5 are OK for installation in a new VM; the
