Adobe says iOS, interface realities ended mobile Flash
Adobe's Mike Chambers in an outside explanation clarified the company's decision to drop mobile Flash. As expected by many, the absence of Flash on iOS virtually guaranteed that the plugin would never gain ground. Web developers always had to end up making separate Flash and HTML5 versions of their pages regardless, leaving little point to supporting Flash when HTML5 would achieve a similar goal.

Control Siri with your mind and lots of hardware
What's better than controlling your iPhone 4S with Siri? How about just thinking about something and having it happen? That's what a group of hackers have accomplished with Project Black Mirror.
They've connected an iPhone 4S up to a setup that uses a MacBook Pro and an Arduino open-source microcontroller along with electrocardiogram pads that are attached to the head of the "test subject." The Arduino is set up with a program that recognizes Siri commands from the ECG pads and sends them to a voice synthesizer, which then feeds the commands into the iPhone's microphone jack.
The guys who came up with Project Black Mirror want to create a product out of this; perhaps a hat that

Sprint iPhone 4S unlocking policy not new, can be undone
It turns out Sprint's locking down of the iPhone 4S SIM wasn't exactly a bombshell. Shortly after the iPhone 4S launched, Sprint told Jason Snell of Macworld that the locking policy would eventually go into effect.
According to Sprint, the company will "allow existing customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use if needed in the future" if customers explicitly ask for the unlock. That's decent of them, but it also makes me wonder why Sprint is bothering to lock the SIM in the first place. I doubt very many people are looking to buy the iPhone from Sprint and then migrate to AT&T or one

Adidas on Friday hoped to bring intelligence to soccer (international football) by bringing out a miCoach-equipped version of its adizero f50 shoes. They cover basics like average speed and distance but can also single out the frequency and distance of sprints as well as the stride.

Editorial: the problem with bad product names and what we can learn from it
Product names generally fall into one of four different categories: good, safe, meaningless and bad. There may be better categories to group them in, but we'll use these for the purpose of this editorial. In the first category I'd put something like Kindle, arguably one of the best new product names of the last ten years. iPhone and iPad, and their subsequent suffixed versions, are in the safe category. They're perfectly fine names for a cellphone and a tablet, but they're not as original or distinct as iMac or iPod were, which I'd consider good (iPod nano, shuffle and touch, on the other hand, are all safe names).
In the meaningless category are things like the MSI GT

It's become a right of passage for any major smartphone -- a few hours under the knife (read: dozuki saw!), for the good 'ol iFixit teardown. Today's victim is the Motorola Droid RAZR, which happened to hit Verizon stores around the time it arrived at the iFixit labs -- so, yes, you can go pick one up today and do this yourself at home, at your own risk and $299 expense, of course. iOS 5.0.1 upgrade may not fix your battery woes
iOS 5.0.1 seems a bit of a mixed bag for users, and that's probably a charitable description. Since one of the main features of the update was to fix battery life bugs, it's hard to call this update anything but a

Philips bringt den Bienenstock ins Wohnzimmer
Filed under: Lifestyle
Honig beim Frühstück schon wieder alle? Kein Problem.

Intel's tablet-oriented Clover Trail processor got more details through a claim late Thursday. Having originally intended its Medfield processor for both smartphones and tablets, Intel was now supposed by Digitimes contacts to be limiting Medfield to phones and reserving Clover Trail solely for the larger slates. The aim would be to directly challenge equivalent Intel ARM processors, including in peak design power.

Siri's UK voice answers questions about his journey to the iPhone 4S
The first rule of being Siri is do not talk about being Siri -- but Jon Briggs, the voice of the iPhone helper's British version, has, fittingly, has bucked that trend. Apple's preference for mystery surrounding the matter hasn't silenced the one-time tech journalist turned voice over actor who discovered that he was the voice of the 4S's assistant upon hearing his "flat and even" readings played back on a commercial for the handset. Briggs told The Telegraph that he recorded the basis for the British Siri five or six years ago, speaking some 5,000 sentences over the course of three weeks for "a decent sum."

Hong Kong line for iPhone 4S numbers in the thousands
We mentioned in passing that the iPhone 4S had sold out in ten minutes at the Hong Kong Apple Store, but given these pictures that have been posted online since, a statement like that doesn't really do the launch justice. Black market salesmen were buying and selling iPhones outside the store, apparently, and leaving the queue got your picture taken and your number checked. Apple corporate matching program raises $2.6M for charities
As first reported by AppleInsider, Apple has announced to its employees that their combined efforts have led to US$2.6 million being donated to charitable companies since the company's "Apple Matching Gifts Program" began. That's not a bad haul considering the program is only seven weeks old.
The program was started by Apple's new CEO Tim Cook in September. Through the program Apple will match employee donations dollar-for-dollar -- up to $10,000 per employee, per year -- to any nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
Currently the "Apple Matching Gifts Program" is only available to US employees, though Apple is expected to roll it out in other countries i

Because the update is so new, users in Apple's support forums and elsewhere are still methodically going through possible other causes for battery drain, but for some the update changed nothing in terms of useful battery life.
