Apple puts Galaxy Tab 10.1N on the chopping block, asks German court for preliminary injunction
It wasn't long ago that Samsung modified its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to get it back on the German market, and it didn't take long for Apple to respond. Apparently, Cupertino didn't take kindly to Sammy's sneaky workaround, and has filed for an injunction to stop the 10.1N from showing up on store shelves in Germany. The slate's fate will be determined on December 22nd, so we'll have to wait and see whether it joins its siblings on the sidelines, or is around to deliver some Honeycomb delights to

Apple asks Germany to block lawsuit-dodging Galaxy Tab 10.1N
Samsung's attempt at avoiding legal action through the Galaxy Tab 10.1N was shot down on Tuesday after Apple requested a preliminary ban in a German court. A Dusseldorf court will hear Apple's request on December 22 and could see the Android tablet banned in at least Germany and potentially the European Union. Sales will continue in the meantime.

Mophie adds Product (RED) battery packs to fight AIDS
Mophie has just teamed up with (RED) to create a special edition range of its flagship products, including the juice pack air, juice pack plus and its reserve, boost and powerstation universal products. In order to help raise awareness of and to fight AIDS, five percent of profits from the sales of these products will be donated to the Global Fund.

Phone Arts shows off original works created only with iOS
This is one of the more interesting art projects revolving around Apple's touch devices -- Phone Arts is a series of works that highlights pieces made specifically with the iPhone or the iPod touch. We've seen art made with iOS apps and devices before, but this is a little different. Rather than using the phone to create some version of an oil painting or a sketch, these pieces strike me as art that you can look at and know right away that it could only have been created on the iPhone's screen.

Time Warner Cable's tablet app available for Android, live TV streaming still iPad only
As promised, a Honeycomb compatible version of Time Warner Cable's tablet app has arrived before the return of the NBA. Dubbed TWC TV in its Android iteration, v1.0 includes an integrated guide, the ability to act as a remote control, search TV listings, and schedule DVR recordings. So far it's only promised to operate on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Xoom tablets, but the notes indicate it should scale to whatever Honeycomb slate you happen to have handy at the moment. FCC lets AT&T withdraw merger, makes report public anyways
The FCC during a conference call Tuesday cleared AT&T's withdrawal of its application for the T-Mobile merger. It countered AT&T's claims to a 'right' to withdraw with the assertion that the agency had the option to keep the application intact. FCC officials had decided to let AT&T back out because it would be "unfair" to everyone involved, the regulator said during the call.

New HTML5 site demos Windows Phone 7.5 in iOS, Android
Microsoft has published a new HTML5 website meant to demonstrate Windows Phone 7.5 on iOS and Android devices. The page is located at aka.ms/wpdemo, and simulates many of the features of Windows Phone, mainly ignoring things that won't easily work in a web browser, such as voice recognition. Lenovo trudging into the smart TV arena, plans LeTV launch in Q1 2012
A Chinese company throwing French around in its product names. Right. Oddities aside, it looks as if the LePhone will soon have LeCompany -- Lenovo will be pushing out its first smart TV in the first quarter of 2012. Charles Walton, father of RFID technology, dies at 89

Windows 8 notebooks with ARM may not ship until June 2013
Windows 8 might not be running on any ARM-based devices besides tablets until 2013. Notebook builder sources claimed to Digitimes Tuesday that the systems themselves might not be shown until the end of 2012 and wouldn't ship until June 2013, just as Microsoft's OS would be near its expected first anniversary. ASUS and Lenovo were some of the first lining up, and they would "test the water" with full growth expected in 2014.

Qbo robot looks in a mirror, learns who he is (video)
A robot equipped with stereoscopic vision and some object and facial recognition programs opens up a whole number of different possibilities, but few quite as interesting as what happens when you place said robot in front of a mirror. PlayStation Vita won't play grandpa's games -- for now
While Sony confirmed that the PS Vita will be able to dive into the PSP's back-catalog from launch, it looks like it'll miss out on anything pre-millennium. An updated page from the PS Vita's Japanese site has backed up rumors that PSOne Classics and other "archive games" won't be available when the quad-core console arrives in Asian stores next month. However, it's not all bad news for anyone hoping to relive those jaggy-edged gaming triumphs of the late 90's -- the official response adds that plans for older titles will be announced in due course.

Malls halt cellphone-tracking experiment after complaint from Senator Schumer
As you may have heard last week, two US malls (the Promenade Temecula in Southern California and Short Pump Town Center in Richmond, Virginia) decided to conduct a little experiment this holiday shopping season, in which they employed some cellphone-tracking technology in an effort to learn more about individuals' shopping patterns. That technology came from Path Intelligence, which has previously outfitted UK malls with the system, and assures folks that it only detects cellphone signals, and is unable to gather phone numbers or other personal data. Those assurances apparently weren't enough for US Senator Chuck Schumer, however, who sent letters to both the FTC and the CEO of Path Intelligence, complaining that the tracking was "

Apple pulls iTether from App Store, cites carrier burden
As expected, Apple has pulled iTether from the App Store. The removal has been confirmed by the app's developer, Tether, which has issued a statement revealing some behind-the-scenes details. "Around 12PM EST, Apple called our head office to let us know they were going to go ahead and pull our app iTether from the App Store. They stated it was because the app itself burdens the carrier network, however they offered us no way to remedy the solution," the page reads.

News: Nielsen: iPhone accounts for 28% of smartphone app downloads
According to the latest data from Nielsen, the iPhone accounted for 28.3 percent of all smartphone app downloads over the last thirty days. iFixit offers transparent rear panels for iPhone 4S
iFixit released transparent rear panels for the iPhone 4 several months ago, which put the surprisingly attractive innards of Apple's smartphone on display. Apple must have tweaked the internals of the iPhone 4S just barely enough for that panel to be incompatible, because iFixit has now released a new rear panel specifically engineered for the iPhone 4S.

Nielsen: Android settles in at 43% of US smartphones
Android's share of the US smartphone market started leveling off in the summer, Nielsen said Tuesday. With Android at 42.8 percent, its overall summer share was the same as what it managed in August. Apple was also unaffected and held the iPhone firm at 28.3 percent.

Gogo taps Inmarsat satellites for worldwide in-flight Wi-Fi
Gogo took the first steps towards having a truly worldwide option for Internet access during airline flights. A deal with Inmarsat will see its Global Xpress satellite data used for international flights during those points when Gogo's country-based cellular coverage is no longer in range. It would potentially be faster than the land service at as much as 50Mbps; the EVDO link in the US stops at 3.1Mbps.

Nielsen's Q3 numbers are out: Android's still atop the OS chain, Apple remains number one manufacturer
Another quarter has come and gone, and you know what that means: Nielsen ratings are out again. The latest batch of numbers don't reveal anything wildly new, but they're still just as telling nonetheless: 44 percent of mobile subscribers in the US use a smartphone in the US. Of those, 71 percent are in possession of an Android device or an iPhone. Additionally, 56 percent of all phone purchases during the third quarter were smartphones. And -- this probably won't come as a surprise to anyone -- at a decisive 42 percent, Android remains the number one smartphone OS while Apple is still perched firmly on top as the leading manufacturer (28 percent). Facebook, FTC reach settlement, Zuckerberg confesses 'a bunch of mistakes'

Single component limiting iPhone 4S supply, analyst claims
Apple is facing only one real obstacle in meeting demand for the iPhone 4S, according to Rodman & Renshaw's Ashok Kumar. Rolling Stone magazine coming to the iPad
Unlike its competition, which jumped at the chance to get its magazines on the iPad, Wenner Media has been slow to embrace the tablet and its digital subscriptions. The publisher is finally ready to take the plunge and is preparing to bring Rolling Stone Magazine and US Weekly to the iPad in 2012. These two magazines will be tablet versions of the print magazine and, sadly, won't offer any new or unique content.

The iPad 3 display should help kick off a dramatic improvement in the quality of tablet displays early next year, DisplaySearch said. Based on its own shipment forecast data, it expected the typical pixels per inch (PPI) of a tablet to jump from 147 at the end of 2011 to 191 in early 2012. NVIDIA orchestrated a mid-cycle upgrade for the GeForce GTX 560 Ti. A new Limited Edition bumps it from 384 visual processing cores to 448 to keep it relevant. Daily iPad App: Stuck on Earth
Stuck on Earth is one of those 'really good ideas' that only seems obvious after you've seen it and spent some time with this free app.
It's designed for travelers and especially photographers. Move a map to any place on earth, and as you zoom in you will begin to see photographs taken at those locations. The photos come from Flickr and other sources, and the developers check those images by looking for embedded GPS coordinates so the photos appear at the right place on the map. Many of the photos have comments, and you can get directions to any of the locations from directly inside the app.

iPhone 5,1 and iPad 3,3 make first appearances in iOS 5.1
More discoveries in the iOS 5.1 beta have found Apple's first reference to the 2012 iPhone and to more 2012 iPad developments. Filippo Bigarella has shown a reference to an "iPhone 5,1" in the beta code. As with past models, the next iPhone is being considered a major revision rather than a minor upgrade.

Daily iPhone App: Happy Hills
Happy Hills is an interesting title -- it's similar to the awesome iBlast Moki 2, though it's not quite as good or as well-produced as that one. The way it works is that you need to use a series of bombs to blow a set of obstacles off of "hills" (which are actually columns with eyes, in an art style very similar to a Mario Bros. background), thus putting them in the titular mood.
The puzzles eventually break down to physics, as you've got to clear off the hills in as few bombs as possible. You can also blow certain blocks up into specific places to earn stars, and there are a few different types of bombs and blocks to play with as well, each with the

Segate rolls second-gen Momentus XT notebook SSD, hard drive
Seagate started off Tuesday by shipping its second-generation Momentus XT hybrid drive for notebooks. The upgrade is estimated to be about 70 percent faster than the earlier Momentus even as it goes to 750GB of internal storage. Zu den eigentlichen Gründungspapieren, die nur aus drei Seiten bestehen, gibt es dann noch weitere sieben Seiten, mit denen der dritte Gründer neben Steve Jobs und Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne, wenige Monate später wieder aus der Firma ausstieg - ein Schritt der als 2,6-Milliarden-Dollar-Fehler bekannt wurde. Apple veröffentlicht iOS 5.1 Beta für Entwickler: Hinweise auf weitere iOS-Geräte
Apple hat in der Nacht zum Dienstag iOS 5.1 Beta 1 veröffentlicht. Die Beta-Version des Apple Betriebssystems steht ab sofort für Entwickler zum Download bereit. Gerüchten zufolge wird Apple mit der neuen iOS-Version gegen die noch bestehenden Problem der geringen Akkulaufzeit bei verschiedenen iOS-Geräten vorgehen und diese versuchen zu beheben. Durch iOS 5.1 sollen zudem weitere Sicherheitslücken geschlossen werden. iTether: iOS-Tethering App jetzt (noch) im App Store

Für den BlackBerry gibt es die Tethering-App Tether schon lang, jetzt ist sie auch im App Store unter dem Namen iTether aufgetaucht. Für nicht ganz billige 11,99 Euro bietet sie genau eine Funktion, nämlich die Weitergabe der Netzverbindung an einen Rechner über eine emulierte Ethernet-Verbindung, was für Mac und PC funktioniert, die jeweils eine kostenlose Software dazu brauchen. Wie lange Apple die App noch im App Store lässt ist unklar, schliesslich werden sie ihre Netzbetreiber-Partner nicht unbedingt vor den Kopf stossen wollen. iOS 5.1 Beta ist da, bereit zum Diktat
Seit gestern abend ist die neue iOS Beta 5.1 für Entwickler da und es sieht so aus, als ob die neueste Version von iOS 5 jetzt auch zum Diktat bereitsteht: unter anderem soll es jetzt eine API geben, die Spracheingabe als Texteingabe unterstützt, was wohl auf allen unterstützten iOS-Geräten funktioniert. Ansonsten wurde an den Audio Units und der AudioToolbox geschraubt, kleinere Änderungen soll es auch bei Core Video geben. Ob das Batterieproblem des iPhone 4S gelöst wurde ist noch unklar.

An app that allows unlimited tethering from an iPhone or 3G iPad to a Mac or PC has appeared in the App Store, called iTether and costing $15. Ford's Sync system gained a new choice for AppLink direct control through Slacker. Those with updated versions of Slacker for iOS (App Store), Android Market), or BlackBerry (App World) can both stream radio from 3G or 4G to the car stereo system as well as use voice commands to start playback, skip, ban, or favorite tracks without touching the phone. 3DS sales triple, help bring Nintendo back into competition

Seagate still sees hard drive shortages for several quarters
Seagate in an update warned that hard drive shortages relating to Thai flooding would last for the long term. It anticipated that shortages would go on for "several quarters." Did you experience a Siri outage?
We've seen a few minor outages for Siri since its debut, but those were minor blips compared to what appears to have been a more widespread, longer lasting outage that took place earlier today in the US, Europe and South Korea (according to Electric Pig -- we can attest to seeing an error message with the service in the US, and BGR noted it as well). We asked our Twitter followers and some reported brief outages last night, but others said it's been unavailable for hours and is still down.

Apple seeds iOS 5.1 beta with new voice, mystery 'iPad 2,4'
Apple gave developers their first taste of significant post-5.0 updates with the first betas of iOS 5.1 and Xcode 4.3. The iOS update upgrades voice dictation on "supported devices," although it's presumed this still means just the iPhone 4S for now. So far, only programming interface changes are known to have come through the update, mostly those affecting peer-to-peer interfaces in DNS calls.

iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers
The latest update to iOS 5 is drawing near, folks, as the beta of version 5.1 was just released on Apple's developer site. You can grab the build if you're in possession of an iPhone 3GS or later, either iPad or the third and fourth generations of the iPod Touch. We're hoping to see some fixes to the battery life issues on the iPhone 4S, as the company has acknowledged the concern and promised a fix in the near future. iOS 5.1 beta ready for testing
The iOS 5.1 beta 1 SDK is now available for download by paid devs at the iOS developer site. Sign in with your developer credentials to gain access to the updated SDK. You will need to download and install firmware via iTunes and cannot use over-the-air updating for this initial release.
Because it cannot be said too often, make sure you read any release notes on-site. For everyone intoxicated by new technologies that might allow you to update using other means, I cannot strongly encourage you enough to go to the site and read the release notes. This hint goes out especially to those of you who are not primarily developers but how have purchased dev accounts to stay current on the technology.

iPhone 4 battery combusts on Aussie flight
Well, this is awkward. Just over a month after I locked horns with Australia Post and called its restrictions on shipping electronic devices with integrated lithium batteries "arbitrary and idiotic," because "Millions of travelers fly with iPhones every year. NONE of them explode," guess what happened? No really, go on, guess.

iFixit on Monday gave iPhone 4S owners a way to customize the look in a more permanent way with an updated version of its Transparent Rear Glass Panel in a special kit. Rovio reportedly turns down $2.25 billion from Zynga
We're pretty late in the year, but this might be one of the craziest stories of 2011 -- according to sources, Angry Birds developer Rovio turned down a deal with social game company Zynga, to the tune of $2.25 billion.
