Microsoft's buyout of Skype may close in US this week
Microsoft's buyout of Skype could be formally completed in the US this week, multiple tips indicated Tuesday. They explained to AllThingsD that it was "likely" the deal would be done in the next few days. The agreement already has American and European approval and is likely just waiting on formalities.

Virgin Atlantic launches low-carbon fuel, aims to halve carbon footprint (video)
Richard Branson was in London today to announce "one of the most exciting developments of our lifetime." Right, so that'd be SpaceShipFour, we presume, capable of landing on the moon? Pulse News for iOS gets cross-device sync
Alphonso Labs has released separate iPad and iPhone updates for Pulse News, its feed-based news reader. In both circumstances the apps are now at v2.5, and have gained a new feature called Pulse Sync. The service keeps feeds consistent between devices, making sure a source added on an person's iPad, for instance, will automatically show up on their iPhone. Plantronics Voyager Pro HD headset answers calls on its own
Plantronics kicked off CTIA with the Voyager Pro HD, a Bluetooth headset that will answer incoming phone calls as soon as users insert it into their ears, so there is no need to press any buttons. It also works in reverse and will automatically disable itself and users will need to answer calls using their handsets. Also, any streaming audio will also be paused if the headset is removed from a wearer's ear.

Daily iPad App: 2Do
I'm not exactly the paradigm of organization -- it took me years to get a regular calendar set up and working, my email inbox is usually a mess of various reminders and things that need replying to, and my present to-do system is usually just whatever piece of paper I can grab in real life and scribble some tasks on.
But I do want to be more organized, and so when I finally bought my iPad last week, I poked around the App Store for solutions and tried to find one that 1) was easy to use and pleasing to the eye and that 2) I would actually stick with. Apple wins new patent on text-to-speech conversion
The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a new patent for a text-to-speech conversion process. Titled Multi-unit approach to text-to-speech synthesis, the patent describes a way of matching units from an input string to an audio library. An important inclusion is metadata, such as articulation relationships, which can inform a processor how to make phrases sound more natural. The software should also support a client-server architecture, allowing remote processing.

Can you help provide a 'lost iPad' story with a happy ending?
So Greg from Australia contacted me on the tip line with a rather interesting story. While vacationing in Italy, he stumbled across a lost iPad in his hotel. He soon realized that the iPad belonged to Leisha, an American lady in Colorado.
He brought it home to Australia so he could try to work with Apple to repatriate it to its owner. Upon calling his local Apple store, he was turned down flat. Apple would not help him ship the iPad back home. So he contacted us here at TUAW.
We made call after call to various Apple support arms to see if anyone could help the iPad travel from its Antipodean perch, all the way back home. Each time, we were flatly denied. If he wants to ship the iPad, we were told, he'd either have to do it out of his own pocket or have the owner pay.

Twitter for iOS adds improved sign-ups, redesigned iPad DM feature
Twitter's official iOS app has been updated with a few nice new features. First off, it now offers an "enhanced sign up experience." iOS 5's built-in Twitter integration now allows apps to query the Settings app for sign-in credentials (if they've been set up to do so). This greatly streamlines the process of using an app with Twitter features for the first time, because you don't have to manually enter your account information or password when you first launch the app. Instead, you simply tap "OK" on a modal dialog popup that asks if the app can access your Twitter accounts. Tweetbot is the first third-party app I know of that's also integrated this functionality.

Twitter 3.5 hits iOS with official photo uploads, iOS 5
Twitter prepped for the launch of iOS 5 on Tuesday by posting Twitter 3.5 for iOS hardware (App Store). Notes describe the code as making "several performance enhancements and bug fixes," without going into additional detail. ITT unveils GhostRider encryption device capable of securing US Army smartphones

ASUS UX becomes Zenbook in US, takes on MacBook Air at $999
ASUS at its New York City event formally brought over its UX ultrabooks to the US. Now called Zenbooks, the 11.6-inch UX21 and 13.3-inch UX31 are fundamentally similar to the ones sold abroad and have very portable dimensions not unlike the MacBook Air both are based on. iTunes 10.5 fixes security, drops QuickTime for Windows
While most of the changes in iTunes 10.5 are aimed at supporting iOS 5 and iCloud, Apple has also made some significant changes for Windows users. Central is the removal of QuickTime from the installation package, since iTunes is said to no longer require it. TUAW is getting lots of queries from those who pre-ordered their iPhone 4S but were not given the option for an AppleCare+ purchase at that time; most of them ordered their phones from their carrier, rather than directly from Apple. If you're unfamiliar with the extended support program, you may wonder why this is an issue. It's because of some wording on the Apple website.

iTunes 10.5.1 beta available for developers
A little more than an hour after the public release of iTunes 10.5, the beta of iTunes 10.5.1 with iTunes Match was pushed to developers.
As commenters have noted, iTunes 10.5 disabled iTunes Match, so for developers who are testing the service, you'll want to head to the Apple Developer Center and grab the beta of iTunes 10.5.1. iTunes will most likely be updated to 10.5.1 when iCloud is formally released to the public on Wednesday.

Geekbench scores benchmark iPhone 4S A5 at 800MHz
Here is some good news and bad news for prospective iPhone 4S owners. The bad news is that the iPhone 4S has a dual-core 1GHz CPU, but its clocked to 800 Mhz. The good news is that, even with slower clock speeds, the 4S still beats the pants off the iPhone 4 and other Android smartphones.
This information comes from AnandTech which compared the iPhone 4S and other handsets using online benchmarks. The results place the iPhone 4S at the top of the mobile phone market with benchmark scores well above the iPhone 4 and other smartphone competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S2. RIM investor Jaguar forming pact to demand CEO overthrow
Increasingly vocal investor firm Jaguar Financial put out a statement Tuesday saying it had raised support for its demand for a corporate sale or makeover. The group said it already had eight percent of all of the BlackBerry's makers onside and was making deals it hoped could boost that to 12 percent. Jaguar chief Vic Alboini claimed that the two RIM CEOs had led the company off the innovative track and that it was following trends, not setting them.

If you haven't pre-ordered an iPhone 4S and really want one at launch, then you should check out Sam's Club before you start staking out your place in line. Starting today at 10:00 a.m. local time, customers can travel to the discount retailer and reserve an iPhone 4S on a first come, first service basis.
All reserved iPhones will be available for pickup starting on October 14th. AppleCare+ may mean end of informal free iPhone replacements
Apple is halting a policy of occasionally waiving the replacement fee for damaged, out-of-warranty iPhones, an Apple Store source claims. As far as iTunes updates go this is a pretty big one -- version 10.5 brings with it what Apple's calling iTunes in the Cloud, which lets you store your music and TV purchases in iCloud so you can access them on any other Apple device. That also includes automatic downloads of purchases to your Mac and iOS devices, and the ability to download previous purchases on said devices.

Apple has released iTunes 10.5 via software update, the first release in a series leading up to the public release of iOS 5 on Wednesday.
iTunes 10.5 introduces iCloud to the software along with automatic downloads. You can also download previous music, TV, app and book purchases again at no additional cost. Some previous purchases might not be available because they are no longer available through iTunes.
It also adds Wi-Fi syncing, which automatically syncs an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iTunes any time they're both on the same Wi-Fi network, one of the key features of iOS 5.

Apple wants Qualcomm to help clear it of Samsung lawsuits
Apple quietly submitted an ex parte application (below) that it hoped could nullify Samsung's 3G patent countersuits. The filing would let it demand information of Qualcomm to prove that it already had the right to Samsung's 3G patents without having to pay Samsung directly. Qualcomm supplies cellular chipsets for both the CDMA iPhone 4 and every iPhone 4S and, theoretically, is already paying Samsung an amount that would exempt Apple of any cost of its own.

LG P930 handset visits the FCC, does little to shake off the mystery
The last time we heard tell of the LG P930, the thing was little more than mysterious XML code. We still don't know that much about the Android-packing device, but at least it's now real enough to have earned FCC approval. There are a couple of interesting tidbits revealed in the documentation here, however -- first and foremost is the fact that it's referred to as an "LTE phone." Also on-board is Bluetooth and WLAN, 802.11n and WCDMA band V. As you can see from the above drawing, LG and the FCC aren't really giving us much to work with on the image front.

Are you excited about Siri? If so, this video on Stuff.tv is going to knock your socks off. In the video, users ask Siri to open a website, send an IM to someone, ask it about the weather both locally and in San Francisco, set an alarm, do some currency conversions, and find the distance to the Moon.
Be sure to watch the end of the video, where a young woman asks "Is it going to rain tomorrow?" and Siri responds with "Looking at London weather, it doesn't look like it's going to rain tomorrow."

I've always had a problem with the term "jailbreaking" when it comes to Apple's mobile devices. The term "jail" came into usage long before iOS in reference to isolated user-space instances, but that old meaning seems to have been obscured through both overuse and continued attempts to paint Apple as a dictatorial company interested only in hamstringing users of its devices. I've let "jailbreaking" slide until now because even though I think it's a loaded term, it's also a nice, short way to describe the act of opening

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory will use the parallel processing capability of the NVIDIA Tesla M2090 GPU in a new supercomputer, a Cray XK6 nicknamed "Titan." Apple reaction to Wintek glitches triggers industry fallout
Recent problems with Wintek touchpanels are creating ripple effects throughout the Taiwanese touchpanel industry, say industry sources contacted by Digitimes. Because of the trouble, Apple -- a key Wintek client -- is said to have have rearranged panel orders among other suppliers. The major beneficiary has allegedly been TPK, which saw revenue jump 53.7 percent month-over-month in September, or 139.7 percent year-over-year.

Report suggest half of iPads sold in China come from grey market
Apple is eyeing the Chinese market for expansion, but it has a troubling problem with grey market devices that it needs to overcome first. According to a report from a Beijing research firm, over one million iPads were sold in China during Q2 2011, but almost half of these sales came from the grey market.
Analysts claim Apple's delayed rollout and low inventory of products in China has contributed to this problem. The 3G iPad 2, for example, went on sale in China this September, a full six months after the device went on sale in the US. Roku hoped to lower the price floor for networked media hubs Tuesday with the Roku LT. By shedding the Ethernet, SD card slot, and Bluetooth used for the Roku 2's gaming on many models, the box drops to just $50, or half the price of an Apple TV. Daily iPhone App: High Flyer Death Defyer
High Flyer Death Defyer is a new game from Game Mechanic Studios, and I really like its scope. It is an iOS game that's really trying to do something different, something really fun, and look really good doing it. The game claims to be a jetpack game, but really it's more of a diving game -- you play a guy (with a jetpack on) who jumps off high platforms and plummets down into huge canyons, trying to hit score rings and then land just right on the platforms below.
I like the idea here, and for the most part, the game pulls it off pretty well -- there's a nice sequence for each jump where you do get a sense of the dizzying feel of what your character is doing, and there are some good mechanics (includin

T-Mobile Bobsled hits iOS, Android with free real-line calls
T-Mobile gave its Bobsled VoIP service a boost with the start of the CTIA phone show by expanding it beyond Facebook. The service is now available on the regular web through a Facebook sign-on but also through iOS (free, App Store) as well as Android (free, Android Market). While the mobile apps don't offer text messaging, they provide the same emphasis on calling and leaving voice messages, whether to Facebook contacts or real-world numbers.

Erste Geekbench Benchmarks vom iPhone 4S: fast so schnell wie iPad 2

So langsam trudeln die ersten Geekbench-Benchmarks für das iPhone 4S ein (da sind anscheinend schon ein paar unterwegs) und die sind erwartungsgemäß vergleichbar mit dem ebenfalls mit A5 ausgestatteten iPad 2: durchschnittlich 622 im Vergleich zu 749 vom iPad 2, was aber am anscheinend runtergetakteten Prozessor liegen dürfte, der hier nur mit ca. 800 MHz läuft. Das ist 68 % schneller als das iPhone 4, aber 17 % langsamer als das iPad 2.

iPhone 4S preliminary benchmarks show A5 clocked at 800MHz
Preliminary benchmarks of the iPhone 4S that have surfaced on the Internet have been found to show that the A5 processor in the iPhone 4S performs at about 75 percent of the capability of the 1GHz A5 processor in the iPad 2. This would peg the A5 processor in the iPhone 4S at 800MHz, according to Anandtech. However, its real-world scripting, browser and graphics performance currently puts it well ahead of its main Android competition, in the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Droid Bionic.

Geekbench-Ergebnisse zum iPhone 4S - A5 mit 800 MHz und 512 MB RAM
Nachdem gestern bereits erste Browser-basierte Benchmark-Ergebnisse zum iPhone 4S bekannt wurden, sind nun auch Geekbench-Ergebnisse für die reine CPU-Leistung erschienen. Hierbei wird schon bei der Taktfrequenz eine erste Abweichung zum A5-Prozessor des iPad 2 sichtbar. Während der A5 des iPad mit 1,0 GHz getaktet ist, erreicht die Taktfrequenz beim iPhone maximal 800 MHz, was auf die geringere Akku- und Kühlleistung zurückzuführen ist.

AT&T starts CTIA off right by introducing five new smartphones to its Android lineup
At CTIA last March, AT&T stole the show by announcing its intent to purchase T-Mobile US. Audible drops in-app website link, bypasses Apple rules
Rather than go along with Apple's requirement of a 30 percent cut of sales, Audible.com has removed the "Shop" button from within its app that linked to the company's website. Customers will now have to go through a series of steps to create a "Shop Audible" home screen link that will serve the same function on their mobile device. Hands-on with Facebook for iPad as Project Spartan reveals
Arguably one of the more important tablet apps released in recent memory, Facebook for iPad has launched and promises to fill a hole that many have said has existed since the iPad launched in April last year. It's a fundamental break from the earlier iPhone design, however, with new metaphors and some touches specific to the larger screen. We'll find out in a hands-on whether it's worth using over an alternative like Friendly as well as learn how the long-rumored Project Spartan fits in.

This giant military spy blimp is really hard to miss
What's this spy blimp doing next to an 18-wheeler? We're not entirely sure, but it's certainly not being subtle about it. This jumbo-sized floater, codenamed "Blue Devil Block 2," measures some 370 feet in length and comprises a whopping 1.4 million cubic feet. Originally inflated in September, the definitely-not-blue Blue Devil took flight for the first time last week in North Carolina and, if all goes to plan, should head to Afghanistan by the middle of next year. AirPort Utility app for iOS about to debut
While iOS 5 includes a new feature that allows for initial setup of an AirPort device from an iPad or iPhone, any future tweaking of settings still has to be done from a Mac or PC. However, Twitter user Sonny Dickson found references to an AirPort Utility app in iOS 5's Settings app. Without going into too much NDA-licious detail, I'll just say that I've independently confirmed what he's found, although the relevant link currently goes nowhere and does nothing.

Microsoft exec says Windows phone is cure for iPhone monotony
Andy Lees, President of Microsoft's Windows Phone division, believes the time is now for Windows Phone 7 to gain some ground on its competiton. Lees see Android as chaotic with too many choices, and the Apple iPhone 4S as a missed opportunity because it offers only a minor improvement in hardware and software.
The latest Mango version of Windows Phone, Lees points out, has a hardware standard that limits fragmentation and a fresh, new UI that sets it apart from Android and iOS. Audible removing in-app purchases according to Apple's rules
We've seen quite a bit of squabbling over the subscription and in-app purchase for content rules on the App Store in the past, but generally, things have tended to go Apple's way. Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus up for pre-order: $399 16GB, $499 32GB
Korea's finest have been very coy on the dual-core and Honeycomb update to the Galaxy Tab 7, the 7 Plus. We knew that Austria and Indonesia would get it by the end of October but didn't know when it was likely to land in the States, or how much it would cost when it got here. Fortunately, it has now been spotted at J&R.com, where you will be happy to know that the 16GB version will cost $400, while the 32GB costs a bit more at $500. Now they just need to tell us when the thing will actually arrive.

Daily iPad App: Facebook
I won't lament on how it took ages for Facebook to come to the iPad, but with the program's release earlier today, users finally get an interface tailored especially to the iPad.
If you're up to speed on the ongoing changes to Facebook's web interface, then the iPad app will look familiar. As with the website, you're presented with a split screen with Facebook chat on the right and statuses on the left. Top stories appear first with recent stories beneath. However, tapping the blue box in the upper-left corner doesn't allow you to toggle a particular top story off your feed like the Facebook website does. Rumor: HP decides on possible webOS sale, spinout this week
HP may be choosing what to do with its webOS team this week, a rumor purported on Monday. A source within HP told an unusual choice for an outlet, AppleInsider, that the company would say whether it would sell off or spin out the webOS group. It's unclear if this was directly attached to HP's known plans to review its PC unit's future before the end of the month or if the two would head in separate directions.

We're live from CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011!
We're gathering at the San Diego Convention Center to attend the fall edition of CTIA Wireless, also known as CTIA Wireless Enterprise & Applications 2011. Sure, the name's a mouthful, but we can't wait to check out the show floor and get a handful of the latest and greatest gadgets. The biggest news so far is what won't be shown off at this week's event, but we're certain this shindig's got plenty more to take our attention away from good ol' Nexus whats-his-face.
