Qualcomm has laid out its details of the upcoming S4 SoC, and yes, there's definitely reason for excitement with this next generation Snapdragon. Shazam violates Developer Agreement, blames Jeff Rock
Jeff Rock happened to notice a push notification on his iPhone after installing Shazam. He checked it and it turned out to be an advertisement that had popped up. Since it didn't seem like expected behavior (push notification of an advert?), Jeff tweeted the Shazam folks to ask about it. Instead of a) Apologizing and trying to sort it out, b) Taking him seriously and helping troubleshoot, or c) Ignoring him entirely, they chose d) Tell Jeff it was clearly his fault.
Not so fast there, Shazammissing the point he was trying to make, they told him that he must have turned notification on himself and needed to turn them off. Let me just point out that his complaint was not that he received A notification, it was that he received an A

Apple iPhone 4S now shipping in 'one to two' weeks, over 200,000 AT&T pre-orders in first 12 hours
If there was any question of how hot a tamale Apple's iPhone 4S would be, the answer's edging toward muy caliente. AT&T's stated that the iPhone 4S has ushered in its best iPhone launch to date, receiving over 200,000 pre-orders for the device during the first 12 hours of availability (crediting its success to having the only US version operating over 14.4Mb/s HSPA+, aka FauxG). Amazon spins off Kindle Fire work into special firm Seesaw
Amazon has quietly dedicated an entire company to producing its Kindle Fire and future tablets. Five US trademark filings (one, two, three, four, five) for the Kindle Fire and its Silk browser are attributed to Seesaw LLC, a company based in Delaware for what's likely legal reasons. The attorneys who filed for the trademarks are the same as those who have filed for many of Amazon's own.

Sony Pictures acquires rights to Steve Jobs biopic
Sony Pictures has successfully bid for the rights to turn Walter Isaacson's authorized biography of Steve Jobs into a motion picture. Deadline reports the deal is worth between one to three million dollars and headed by producer Mark Gordon. Deadline suspects bidding had already been taking place for film rights, but recent events have intensified interest.

Apple ships custom parts from prototype 3G MacBook Pro
Apple after some weeks' time has returned some of the parts that were used to boot up the escaped 3G MacBook Pro prototype. Following Carl Frega's returning the prototype to Apple on September 1 after a request, he told CNET that Apple had shipped back the Western Digital 320GB hard drive, official MacBook Pro battery, and two RAM sticks he used to prove it worked. ViaSat-1 scheduled to launch October 19th, spreading high-speed satellite service across North America
It's been delayed a few times already, but the high-capacity ViaSat-1 satellite is now in the process of being prepped for a new launch date: October 19th. Once in operation, it'll bring download speeds up to 10Mbps to satellite internet customers in both Canada and the US (including Hawaii) via Xplornet and WildBlue, respectively, and serve other partners like JetBlue. DIY: Vorhängeschloss aus dem 3D-Drucker

Ok, so ein Vorhängeschloss aus ausgedrucktem Plastik wie das hier von Thing-O-Fun ist vielleicht nicht der Weisheit letzter Schluss, aber hier geht es auch eher um die technische Machbarkeit als um den praktischen Sinn. Die nötigen Federn stammen übrigens aus auseinandergefriemelten Kulis, ansonsten sind alle Teile ausgedruckt und bei Bedarf (und robusterem Material) könnte das sogar ganz praktisch werden, zumindest für alle die ein Schloss brauchen, das auf jeden Fall ein Unikat ist. EU-Kommission erlaubt Microsoft die Übernahme von Skype

Nach der US-Kartellaufsicht hat gestern auch die EU-Kommission die 8,5 Milliarden schwere Übernahme von Skype durch Microsoft genehmigt. Es gebe zahlreiche andere Wettbewerber, darunter Google, so dass es keine wettbewerbsrechtlichen Bedenken gebe. Apple, AT&T, Verizon sell out launch day iPhone 4S preorders
Less than a day after it first went up for preorder, the iPhone 4S has sold out of its launch day stock at the US online Apple Store. New orders for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon models now won't ship for at least one to two weeks. Apple had already been seeing international unlocked sale delays but hadn't touched the US directly until now.

Insiders: iPhone 4S was always intended to use that design
The iPhone 4S look was always going to be the same as its predecessor, a number of tipsters gave out late Friday. US Department of Homeland Security developing system to predict criminal intent
We're not exactly lacking in opportunities for Minority Report references these days, but sometimes they're just unavoidable. According to a new report from CNET based on documents obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, the US Department of Homeland security is now working on a system dubbed FAST (or Future Attribute Screening Technology) that's designed to identify individuals who are most likely to commit a crime. Respekt vor Jobs: Google und Samsung verschieben Event
Der Respekt vor Steve Jobs muss auch den Umsatzzielen der Konkurrenten nicht weichen: Google und Samsung haben die ursprünglich für den 11. Oktober geplante Vorstellung des Nexus Phone und Android 4.0 um zwei Wochen verschoben. This six-legged successor to UC Berkeley's DASH scampers not just horizontally, but vertically -- so long as the material it's climbing is cloth. All motion is handled by the bot's front four legs, while the rear two provide stabilization. UK Starbucks gets simple, free Wi-Fi sign-on
British Starbucks coffee houses took a large stride forward in encouraging Internet use Friday with a change in their Free Wi-Fi service. Similar to the US and Canada, drinkers now just have to visit a single sign-in page, here at BT Openzone, to get access to a hotspot. UK visitors previously had to sign up for a Starbucks Rewards card and login with a username and password, both of which discouraged some from signing in.

Claim: Jobs left 'four years worth' of product plans behind
An unattributed claim in the British tabloid The Daily Mail says that Steve Jobs, the co-founder and chairman of the company, left behind as much as four years' worth of product plans in the pipeline before his death on Wednesday. The estimate is likely to be just an educated guess based on Jobs' famous obsession with planning and his strong desire to see Apple continue, but could be true -- or even conservative -- if history repeats itself.

AT&T notches record 200,000 iPhone 4S pre-orders in 12 hours
AT&T late Friday said it had so far had its best iPhone launch ever after starting iPhone 4S preorders. The company had collected over 200,000 preorders just in the first 12 hours after opening up at midnight Pacific. It tried to credit the rush to its network, pointing out the "twice as fast" 14.4Mbps data and the inherent nature of the network letting calling and data co-exist at the same time.

Google, T-Mobile urge ITC not to ban HTC Android hardware
Both Google and T-Mobile attempted to stave off a possible ITC ban on HTC devices Friday with responses to the ITC's requests for input on Apple's win in the trade dispute before a December 6 hearing. Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu plan birthday Hangout on Google+
If you're not a Google+ user, odds are pretty good that your weekend plans don't involve spending time with the likes of the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The social network will be hosting a Hangout with the two peaceniks as part of the celebration for Tutu's 80th birthday. The online meeting was planned after South Africa refused to grant a visa to the Tibetan spiritual leader. The Hangout will be a late one for those of us in the Eastern time zone, occurring at 4:30AM, but Google has promised to post the video for those who miss the party.

Apple reportedly working with AT&T to display '4G' in status bar
AT&T is reportedly pressuring Apple to advertise the 14.4 Mbps theoretical maximum download speed of the iPhone 4S as "4G" in the iPhone's status bar. Given AT&T's aggressive attempts to market HSPA+ as 4G, that's not surprising. What is surprising is that according to This is my next, Apple is apparently bowing to that pressure and will show "4G" in the iPhone 4S status bar. AT&T has confirmed it is "working with Apple" on the matter.
While HSPA+ is faster than the standard supported by the iPhone 4 and earlier phones, it is not "true" 4G even if AT&T is advertising it that way. Given the litigious nature of the mobile industry, particularly any time Apple's involved, it seems like a terrible mis

Steve Jobs, despite his enormous wealth and influence, lived in a quiet, upscale Palo Alto neighborhood with no gates, no walls and open to pedestrians and traffic. His house was a large but relatively modest brick home in the kind of setting where people went trick-or-treating on Halloween. Apple's board in a state of transition
While Steve Jobs's passing came with a lot of powerful emotional effects, it did unfortunately arrive with at least one practical effect that has to be dealt with sooner or later: Apple needs a new Chairman of the Board. A few experts say in this Reuters piece that it will probably be a tough choice for Apple to make. On the one hand, Apple's strength is in Jobs' legacy -- the company has to be committed to continuing to follow his vision, because that's what got them where they are today. Bono compares Steve Jobs to Elvis
U2 lead singer Bono paid tribute to Steve Jobs with kind comments for the man who turned the music industry upside down with the iPod and iTunes. Bono called Jobs "the hardware/software Elvis" and described him as a man who was "only interested in doing truly great things."
