Must See HDTV (October 3rd - 9th)

How can we still have fall premieres left? After the onslaught of the last two weeks it seems there's still a few to go, as old standbys like House join fresh faces like American Horror Story and Penn & Teller Tell a Lie on the premiere list. It's also a big week for Blu-ray discs, as seen above with a couple of classics showing up, some Disney favorites returning for the first time and special treats like Daft Punk's Interstella 5555 and Planet Earth Special Edition. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. Microsoft: touch to reach, not replace, much of the PC

Microsoft's Chaitanya Sareen in an overview of the change in the Windows 8 Start menu outlined the company's position on the importance of touch. He likened it to the debate over the mouse, which saw its first real mainstream presences in the Apple Lisa and original Mac, and saw some parallels in how it would roll out. Touchscreens would be much more pervasive, Sareen said, but they wouldn't completely replace it on the computer, which was the "most capable" of everyone's devices.

Analysts predict big iPhone sales as press event nears

Apple will reveal its new iPhone tomorrow and analysts are already predicting a buying frenzy. These are predictions, of course, but there's no denying the anticipation felt by many Apple fans. The first comes from Janney Capital Markets analyst Bill Choi, who brandishes a huge number about. He suggests that Apple will sell as many as 107 million iPhones in 2012. Bill cites the potential of yet untapped providers and the audiences they would bring. "There are still a handful of major carriers worldwide that have yet to carry the iPhone. Potential deals with Sprint (52.1M subscribers), T-mobile (33.6M subscribers), China Mobile (628M subscribers) and other large international carriers pose a catalyst to fuel iPhone

Pantech Breakout review

That pool looks cool and refreshing, and all of the kids are having the time of their lives. Problem is, it's in an exclusive club, leaving you to stare at it longingly from the opposite side of a chainlink fence. We know the feeling, and it ain't fun -- yet, the state of LTE in the US over the last year has had just a pinch of elitism due to its high cost of entry and exclusion from most rural areas. Devices running on the near-miraculous speeds haven't exactly been cheap, with handsets like the Samsung Droid Charge and Motorola Droid Bionic at an asking price of $250 to $300 on contract

Adobe to launch 6 new tablet apps, including Photoshop Touch

Adobe has announced a new cloud service called, appropriately enough, Adobe Creative Cloud. The service intends to streamline sharing projects generated in Adobe's apps and creative suites. The big takeaway for iOS users is that Adobe has announced six new tablet apps, including Photoshop Touch. These six new apps, completely optimized for a tablet interface, will cost US$9.99 each and will be available for Android tablets in November. Adobe has offered no fi

Microsoft adds new features to Hotmail, releases an Android app

When we heard Microsoft was holding a press event called "Give Hotmail a Second Look," we wondered if a full-on redesign was in store. The answer happens to be a resounding "no," but the software giant is rolling out a raft of new features to its 365 million-some-odd users. This includes an Android app with two-way email, contact and calendar syncing (!), along with a slew of updates to Hotmail's web interface. First up, you can now automatically categorize incoming mail as newsletters, and then either trash 'em or sweep them to a folder. Additionally, an "Unsubscribe" feature lets you do just that, with Hotmail handling the dirty work of blocking future newsletters from that sender, as well as asking the company to kindly stop spamm

YouTube's $100m TV content deals said near finished

Deals were billed by the WSJ as near-final for pro skater Tony Hawk as well as major production studios such as The Office's ShineReveille, X Factor's FremantleMedia, and several others. The core of the deals is typical for YouTube and would skim revenue from ads running on each show, although the split between YouTube and the content providers wasn't mentioned.

Rumor: App rentals coming to iOS?

TheTechErra went searching through the code in iTunes 10.5 beta 9, and found an interesting series of strings hinting that Apple is about to allow "rental" of iOS apps. The functionality is referred to as "renting," but it sounds much more like an official implementation of app "trials" that lots of developers have been hoping for. Customers would essentially download these app "rentals" (for free or for a price), and then after a certain period of time, the app rental would either expire, or customers could jump in and buy the full version of the app. Most developers on the store have worked around functionality like this, either building up two versions of apps (lite and full), or doing things like putting certain content

Amazon Kindle Lighted Leather Cover hands-on

It's true of other portable electronics and it applies here, too: if you own an e-reader, there's a strong argument to be made that you need a case. Sure, readers are a little more scratch-resistant than smartphones, but a little bit of backpack trauma can do some nasty things to an e-ink display. That could be Amazon's elevator pitch, anyway. Introduced at the company's launch event last week, the Kindle Lighted Leather Cover comes in various sizes, with versions for the Kindle Touch and

WSJ: Sprint to take risky gamble on iPhone

Less than a day before the expected announcement of the new iPhones, the Wall Street Journal reports that Sprint plans to 'bet the company' on the iPhone and will purchase at least 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years, which amounts to about US$20 billion. Sprint would subsidize each phone for about $500. The move isn't expected to generate any sort of profit until 2014. The WSJ's source tells the paper that "the projected hit to the company's operating income is 'staggering,' " but it's expected to halt the company's sales losses to Verizon and AT&T as Sprint's customers seek out the iPhone. By this time, the iPhone going to the Sprint is a rumor that appears to have the

Apple TV authorization outages affect paid content

Sony A77 reviewed: A 24.3 megapixel game-changer?

It's been a long time coming, but the patience has paid off with Sony's A77 finally getting its first pro review. Sure, the $1,400 cost of entry (body only) will weigh heavily on even the most enthusiastic cameraman conscious. But, what's a few hundred dollars when it comes to a camera that Popular Photography says has "radically changed the world of DSLRs"? It seems only the rival Canon 7D holds a candle to this would-be king, besting Sony's latest when it comes to noise and performance at higher ISOs. However, the A77 wins on its al

iPhone 4 users begin selling back old units

iPhone 4 owners are starting to sell their used units as Apple prepares to announce its predecessor. It's a common practice -- sell the "old" tech to help finance the new -- and one Boston-based electronics retailer is already experiencing a significant uptick in smartphone trade-ins and iPhones being offered for sale. Gazelle's Anthony Scarsella says the current iPhone sell-back is "much more aggressive" than it was when the iPhone 4 was released. Scarsella told The Street that 4,500 people tried to sell their iPhones last week, an increase of nearly 30% from the prior week. If those rates continue, he expects Gazelle to see more than 20,000 customers try to sell iPhones t

Those are some pretty epic promises coming from the folks at Canonical, especially since we've seen the most recent beta and Ubuntu 11.10 and, while its packed with welcome improvements over Natty, it's not exactly revolutionary. Still, we're excited that on October 13th the final release of Oneiric Ocelot will be hitting the web with an improved Dash that integrates sear

'Humanity toward others' extended to Windows with Ubuntu One cloud storage

Are you a Windows user in need of yet another cloud storage option? Lucky for you, after a long-running beta, Canonical's Ubuntu One client has officially debuted on Microsoft's platform. First introduced with Ubuntu 10.10, the service offers 5GB of free storage, with file syncing across multiple machines, ala Dropbox. Android and iOS clients are already available. Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard update video leaks, tours Metro in silence

Remember that sleek Xbox Dashboard update we showed you last month? It's back, and it's in French, to boot. A leaked video of the upcoming console update shows a Dash with bit more polish than the one we saw in September -- unfortunately, the demo is slightly blurry, and plods on in silence. Our mute host briefly peeks at the Xbox Live Marketplace, casually glances at the Bing search page and scrolls leisurely through the new Dash's very Metro menu. The whole shebang is en français, of course, and the update's snappy voice-c

New Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 holder comes with bike attached

For a tablet that prides itself in being thin and lightweight, the latest Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 accessory sure adds considerable heft to the device. The Korean manufacturer's UK branch has teamed up with 14 Bike Co to bring the world the Samsung Galaxy bicycle -- a mild-mannered bike with a custom paint job and a detachable holder for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 made from carbon fiber. So, why carry a tablet on a bicycle? For checking things like mileage planners and route trackers on the go, apparently. No word on pricing yet, but we're guessing that this'll be among the more expensive tablet accessories out there. Press information aft

How would you change Samsung's Chromebook Series 5?

It's compact, it's cute and it's weird. But it might be your perfect netbook. Google's Chromebook family isn't apt to ever be an end-all solution -- particularly for those that aren't married to the company's suite of web-based products -- and we're pretty sure Samsung's taking notes on how to make the eventual followup to the Series 5 even better. Battery life was stellar, and the matte display was a joy to look at, but we still found plenty of quibbles. Are you one of the early adopters who picked one of these guys up? If given the chance, how would you tweak the design / so
