Google quietly acquired smartwatch maker WIMM Labs
Ok, so here's the deal: WIMM Labs was one of the earliest entrants into the smartwatch space, way back in 2011. While the Android-based WIMM One failed to set the consumer market on fire, it apparently caught Google's eye. In the summer of 2012, the company put a simple message up on its site declaring that it had entered an exclusive partnership with an unnamed entity for its technology and would thus be ending sales of its devices. Judge throws out case involving faulty iPhone power button
Gigaom reports that a judge in San Jose this week threw out a case alleging that Apple sold the iPhone 4 and 4S knowing full well that the device featured a faulty power button designed to malfunction after the warranty expired.
The case was originally filed by two men in California who sought class action status. The lawsuit asserted that the power button on both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S becomes "stuck and nonfunctional" three months after the warranty expires. The plaintiffs further argued that both Apple and AT&T were aware of the defect and shipped the products regardless. What's more, the suit alleges that both Apple and AT&T took steps to conceal the existence of the defect.

Three rolling out its 4G network in the UK this December
Yesterday both Vodafone and O2 in the UK switched on their 4G networks in select cities throughout the country -- a full ten months after the UK's first 4G provider EE did. And while the wait has been long for some 4G competition, it's now nice to have some options here. However, perhaps a little disappointingly, there's not a lot of difference between pricing plans on the three networks for iPhone 5 owners who want 4G service on their phones. Thankfully in December that will change, because yesterday UK carrier Three announced that is when their 4G service is going live.

Apple Restricting Vacation Time for AppleCare Employees From September 15 to 28
Apple appears to be cutting down on available vacation time for its AppleCare employees between September 15 and 28, a two week period encompassing the prospective September 20 release date for the iPhone 5S and 5C that was first leaked earlier this month. iOS 7 is also expected to be released that week. An internal document shared by AppleInsider reportedly shows the amount of time off available for AppleCare employees during the month of September, which appears to drop beginning on September 15.

Penguin, Macmillan notify customers of ebook settlement
Penguin and Macmillan sent out emails to eligible customers today, notifying them that they're eligible to either receive iTunes credit or a check as part of the settlement of the U.S. Department of Justice antitrust suit against these companies. Apple, despite a guilty verdict, remains the lone holdout in the price-fixing case.
The notification points out that this is just for Penguin and Macmillan, and the settlements are pending by the court. Previously approved settlements include HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and the Hachette Book Group.

EA reports SimCity Mac installation issues have been resolved
Yesterday was a rough day for a certain segment of Mac gamers looking to download and play SimCity on their rigs for the first time.
Almost immediately after the game went live, the official SimCity forums were flooded with reports from customers unable to install the game on their systems. Developer Maxis advised gamers to reinstall EA's Origin download service in order to correct the issues, though that solution seemed to be rather hit or miss, based on firsthand reports. Now, Maxis has informed us that a fix has been found and, presumably, those unable to install their SimCity downloads yesterday will be able to do so now.

Police Seize Over $89,000 in Counterfeit Apple Products at Maryland Mall [iOS Blog]
Maryland State Police have announced that they seized hundreds of counterfeit Apple products from two stores at Arundel Mills Mall, a popular shopping center in the area, reports WBAL-TV 11. Apple's iPhone trade-in program goes live
Apple has officially launched its iPhone trade-in program we reported on earlier this week. Users can take their iPhone's to any Apple Store in the USA and exchange their old device for credit towards a new model. The program has been active in a small number of test stores over the past few weeks, but this is the first time it has been nationally available.
The phones have to be in good working order, meaning water damage is a deal breaker and a cracked screen will lower the amount you're given. Depending on the condition of your device and which era it's from you could receive up to $250 in trade-in credit towards a new phone, but just a new phone.

Proposed E-Book Publisher Settlement Could See Customers Receiving Up to $3 Per Book Purchased
While Apple has been found guilty of conspiring to fix e-book prices as it sought to launch its iBookstore alongside the iPad in early 2010, five publishers involved in the case have already agreed to settle the cases brought against them by state attorneys general and other class-action plaintiffs. Der Smartphone-Kamera-Hybrid Galaxy S4 Zoom kommt in Europa nun auch in einer LTE-Version. Das hat Samsung heute offiziell bekannt gegeben. Die Koreaner haben mit diesem Gerät auf jeden Fall eine Menge Mut bewiesen, ob das schnellere Netz allerdings das Teil zu einem Mainstream-Erfolg werden lassen? Wie dem auch sei, neben der Deutschen Telekom, vertreiben Tele2, Telia Sonera und Orange das Galaxy S4 Zoom erstmal in Europa. A possible fix for your Mac's lost audio alerts
I've experienced this issue many times. A new email arrives, or some other such event that ought to trigger and audible alert from my Mac, but I get nothing but silence.
Until Apple decides to fix this long-standing problem, the Mac Observer has one possible solution. They suggest unplugging any external speakers that use the headphone jack, and then plug them back in. In some cases, it works. But not reliably. My Mac has failed to produce an alert noise after waking from sleep, and even without any external speakers connected.
Of course, it could be settings. In Mail>Preferences>General, check the box for "Play sounds for other Mail actions." Then in System Preferences>Sound>Special Effects, turn the Volume

Apple erforscht automatischen Kamerawechsel bei Video-Aufnahmen
Das US-Patentamt hat am Donnerstag ein Patent von Apple veröffentlicht, welches die Aufnahme von Videos vereinfachen könnte.
Das Patent mit dem Namen «automatic video stream selection» beschreibt eine Technologie, bei welcher die Aufnahmen der Frontkamera und der Kamera auf der Rückseite parallel aufgenommen werden können. Die von Apple entwickelte Technologie entscheidet aufgrund bestimmter Parameter, welche der beiden Video-Quellen genutzt wird. Um zu entscheiden, welche Kamera genutzt werden soll, analysiert das Programm unter anderem das Sprechverhalten oder die beiden Kamera-Signale werden auf bestimmte Muster hin analysiert.
Die von Apple beschriebene Technologie kann beispielsweise für FaceTime genutzt werden. Aufgrund von Bandbreiten-Beschränkungen im mobilen Netz ist es momentan nicht denkbar, die Video-Signale beider Kameras über

Tipp: Dokumente vor Änderungen schützen
OS X kann Dokumente vor ungewollten Änderungen schützen. Ist der Schutz aktiviert, kann das Dokument nicht mehr bearbeitet bzw. geändert gesichert werden — für allfällige Änderungen muss das Dokument zuerst dupliziert und so neu abgespeichert werden, das geschützte Original bleibt dabei unversehrt.
Alternativ kann für das Bearbeiten einer geschützten Datei natürlich auch dessen Schutz aufgehoben werden.
Ebenfalls möglich ist das Schützen von Ordnern, wodurch der Ordner selbst und dessen Inhalt nicht mehr verändert werden können.
Ein Schutz anbringen lässt sich am einfachsten über das Informations-Fenster eines Objektes. Ist das gewünschte Objekt (Ordner oder Datei) im Finder ausgewählt, kann durch den Tastenkürzel ⌘I oder das Menü AblageInformationen das Info-Fenster geöffnet werden. Back in the "good old days," Apple had a nice little app called iWeb that was part of the iLife suite. It was designed to let anyone easily design and publish a website, and despite some failings, it did a pretty good job. iWeb has been ignored by Apple for some years now, and the demise of MobileMe meant that hosting of those sites disappeared unless you knew the secret of moving the site code to another host. Other easy website creators are around and I've probably tried all of them. Es ist gerade mal zwei Tage her, dass das neue Nexus 7 in Deutschland erhältlich war und schon ist es weg. Google meldet, ausverkauft, wann es wieder reinkommt ist nicht klar. Jetzt muss man sich - wie schon beim ersten Nexus 7 - in den Saturns und Media Märkten der Nation auf die Suche machen. Das reduzierte Nexus 4 Smartphone ab 199 Euro ist allerdings wohl nicht so der Renner, oder die Bestände sind hier größer, denn es ist nach wie vor für diesen Preis erhältlich.

In einem neuen Video eines US-Blogs wird detailliert auf die Unterschiede zwischen dem Gehäuse des iPhone 5 und dem Gehäuse des iPhone 5S eingegangen. Unbekannt ist, wie der Blog in den Besitz des Gehäuses gekommen sein will.
Das Gehäuse des iPhone 5S soll demzufolge über denselben Formfaktor verfügen wie das iPhone 5. Allerdings sind die Schrauben anders angeordnet und die Aussparung für den LED-Blitz ist deutlich grösser. Dank dieser grösseren Aussparung hat es genügend Platz, um einen zweiten LED-Blitz einzubauen. Gleichzeitig wurde der Platz, welcher dem Logic Board zugestanden wird, verkleinert, womit mehr Platz für die Batterie übrig bleibt. Damit dürfen sich Käufer der nächsten iPhone-Generation Hoffnung machen, dass die Akkulaufzeit etwas länger hält als beim iPhone 5.

AppleCare-Mitarbeiter beginnen mit Training für iOS 7
Gemäss mehreren AppleCare-Mitarbeitern hat Apple am gestrigen Tag mit dem Support-Training für iOS 7 begonnen. Die Support-Mitarbeiter müssen gemäss den Insidern das Training für iOS 7 bis zum Ende der zweiten September-Woche abgeschlossen haben.

EA veröffentlicht SimCity für den Mac
EA hat am Donnerstag nach mehrmonatiger Verzögerung SimCity für den Mac veröffentlicht. Gemäss den Verlautbarungen von EA ist SimCity für den Mac nicht nur ein Anhängsel der PC-Version, sondern speziell für den Mac optimiert worden. Trotz dieser Optimierungen können Spieler, welche mit einer Stadt auf der PC-Version begonnen haben, nahtlos mit der Mac-Version an dieser Stadt weiterarbeiten. Im Multiplayer-Modus können Spieler mit der Mac- und der PC-Version zusammen eine Region entwickeln.
SimCity für den Mac kann ab sofort in den beiden Versionen «SimCity» und «SimCity Deluxe» geladen werden. Das Spiel ist ausschliesslich im «Origin Store» von EA verfügbar. SimCity setzt mindestens einen Mac mit OS X 10.7 voraus, welcher über einen Core 2 Duo Prozessor mit 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher verfügt. Of course, you might, just as easily, recall the proliferation of actual counterfeit Apple retail stores which seemed to be an ongoing problem in China back in 2011.

Just this past week, however, police officials in Maryland discovered and confiscated hundreds of bogus Apple products at a tech kiosk and cell phone repair shop located inside the Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover, Maryland.

DeskConnect delivers Mac-to-iOS quick sharing
The forthcoming AirDrop functionality in iOS 7 will deliver a straightforward way for some iPhones and iPads to quickly share photos, contacts and more. That's great -- but, aside from the fact that iOS 7 isn't yet generally available, there are a few other flies in the ointment.
Even though iOS 7 will run on devices back to the iPad 2 and iPhone 4, only the latest-gen hardware (iPhone 5, 5th gen iPod touch and current iPad & iPad mini) are eligible to fling files. AirDrop may not connect your Mac's files and photos to your iPhone, either -- as defined right now, it's iOS to iOS.

LEGO Mindstorms gains social media site, three iOS apps
Few companies have so completely captured the hearts and minds of children's creativity like LEGO. As a child I was able to build countless imaginary robots in the comfort of my own home thanks to those brightly colored blocks. And now they're helping you build working robots at home that you can control with your iPhone.
On September 1, 2013 LEGO will release Mindstorms EV3, the third generation in the programmable robot building series. To prepare for the release, LEGO has launched www.LEGO.com/mindstorms, an online social media site where users can share their own robot designs, find 3D building instructions, and download new firmware.

New Videos Depict 'Champagne' and 'Graphite' iPhone 5S Casings

Hawaiian Airlines to Offer iPad Minis as In-Flight Entertainment [iOS Blog]
Hawaiian Airlines is planning to augment its in-flight Entertainment systems with 1,500 iPad minis. Beginning in September, the airline will supply passengers with Apple’s tablets on all of its Boeing 767–300 aircraft that fly 14 routes between Hawaii, the U.S. Mainland, Asia, and South Pacific. The iPad minis, supplied by Bluebox Avionics, will come equipped with 100 hours of movies and TV shows, along with various iPad games. Apple Again Blocks Older Versions of Java Over Vulnerability [Mac Blog]
Apple has again remotely blocked some versions of Oracle's Java browser plugin because of vulnerabilities according to 9to5Mac. Motorola files patent application for a gaze-detecting wristworn device
These days, wearable tech is a beast that cannot be stopped, even if we wanted to (we don't).
