New Apple patent sees a future where you adjust your car from your iPhone
Sharing a car with another person, be it a spouse, friend, or family member, can be difficult when everyone is a different size. Everyone likes the radio their own way, or they're an inch shorter than you and move the mirrors. A new patent application filed by Apple seeks to address that problem by linking certain car settings to your iPhone.

Low-cost iPhone could include 8MP camera found in iPhone 5
The low-cost iPhone -- potentially called the iPhone 5C -- may be getting the same 8-megapixel camera in the iPhone 5, a Chinese report suggests. Motorola Unveils 4.7-Inch Moto X Smartphone with 24-Hour Battery and Touchless Controls
Motorola today announced its new 4.7-inch Moto X smartphone, which comes equipped with a number of impressive features like a 720p AMOLED Display, Touchless Control via Google Now integration, multiple customization options, and unique camera controls. New update brings Gmail notifications to Pebble for iOS users

Complimentary iCloud storage upgrades are expiring soon
If you were a former MobileMe user who got a nice 20 GB chunk of free storage last year when iCloud came to life, the happy days are almost over. A number of the TUAW staff members have received an email similar to the one seen above, noting that we'll have to either buy a storage plan by September 30, 2013 or have the plan drop down to the free 5 GB iCloud plan.
The link on the email goes to this support page, which explains how to sign up for a plan. In my case, the 20 GB plan is going to take $40 out of my wallet for the next year. How about you, TUAW readers? Are you going to renew your iCloud plan or just make do with your Dropbox or Google Drive accounts?

Pebble updates iOS app with email notifications
As promised in July, Pebble has updated the iOS companion app for its smartwatch with email notifications. At the moment, only IMAP email accounts are supported. Gmail logins are handled through Google, while all other accounts require using a special login interface.

Q: In reference to your article Using FaceTime while abroad, I interpreted your suggestion to say that the web could still be accessed if Wi-Fi is ON and Airplane Mode is also ON; basically that just phone calling and cellular data roaming would be affected. Apple is now notifying former MobileMe members via email that the free 20GB iCloud storage upgrade they received will be expiring on Sept. 30, as was announced last year. iCloud storage for those users will revert to the free 5GB plan after the complimentary upgrade expires. Keeper gets 256-bit AES, two-factor authentication
Keeper has released v.7 of its self-named, multi-device platform aimed at storing and sharing private information, such as passwords. The MacBook Air isn't exactly known for its raw graphical might, and its super slim form factor means integrated Intel HD Graphics is as good as you're going to get -- unless you spend some time and cash to build an external graphics processor, that is. Although I have a small family -- just me, my wife, and our Internet-famous cat Ruby -- we've somehow accumulated a lot of iOS devices. My wife and I both have third-generation iPads, we both have iPhones, and I also have an iPad mini. Apple Notifying Former MobileMe Customers of Impending iCloud Storage Downgrade
In 2011, when iCloud replaced MobileMe, Apple gave paying MobileMe customers an additional 20GB of iCloud storage as a thank you for their purchase. Netflix adds profile support to Apple TV, iOS apps
If you're a Netflix subscriber you may know the pain of having multiple people in your household whose tastes in movies may mess up your profile. You like action and adventure film, but one of the kids wants animated kids movies and poof! Your profile is a mess.
Netflix is rolling out fixes for that, beginning today. You can add up to 5 separate profiles, so people will get suggestions based on their specific likes and dislikes. They will also see their own Recently Watched and Instant Queue lists.
The new feature is expected to roll out to iOS devices, Blu-ray players, Smart TV's and other devices over the next few days.

O2 Becomes Second British Carrier to Offer 4G Services [iOS Blog]

BlackBerry Messenger Beta Starts Rolling Out for iOS and Android Devices
According to BlackBerryOS.com, the beta version of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) has started rolling out in the Beta Zone for Android and iOS devices. Netflix Opens Up Multiple Profile Option to All Accounts [iOS Blog]
Netflix announced today that it is opening up its new 'profiles' feature to all accounts, after a brief beta period. The feature allows families to assign unique Netflix profiles -- up to 5 -- to each viewer, with individual Recently Watched and Instant Queue lists. As a result, families and married couples won't be able to 'ruin' each other's Netflix experiences by watching an out-of-character show that then significantly affects Netflix's recommendations. BlackBerry pushes BBM beta invites
Back in May, TUAW reported that BlackBerry Messenger would be arriving for iOS by the end of the summer. In June, T-Mobile UK accidentally tweeted that BBM would arrive on June 27, but that turned out to be a false alarm. Finally, it appears that with the launch window for the app rapidly shrinking, it appears that BlackBerry is finally beginning to send out beta invitations for BBM.

Wer heute im App Store besonders hinsieht, wird feststellen, dass Apps, die zum 1. August aktualisiert oder veröffentlicht wurden, bereits einen neuen Preis tragen. Die niedrigste Preisstufe scheint bei 0,99 Euro zu liegen (vorher 0,89 Euro). Hat Apple die Preise im App Store erhöht? Derzeit finden sich noch Apps mit Preisangaben von 89 Cent, wohl aber auch vermehrt solche mit 99 Cent. Der Abstand zwischen Gehäuserand und Display ist mit nur 3 mm kleiner, so dass die Bildschirmgröße gleich bliebe. USB 3.1 specification published, bringing 10 Gbps USB closer
The USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced yesterday that the specification for USB 3.1 has been completed and is available for download by device manufacturers. While USB 3.1 is no surprise, having been announced early this year, the publication of the spec opens the door for manufacturers to begin making and selling devices that comply with the fast interconnection standard.
USB 3.1, AKA SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps, remains backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices, but adds higher speeds to the USB architecture. With a 10 Gbps top throughput, the new standard matches the initial Thunderbolt data rate while being much less expensive to implement.

Netflix has begun wider deployment of the multi-user profiles that started hitting the Apple TV earlier this week. On top of the Apple TV, the feature is now rolling out to iPhone, iPod, and iPad users "over the next few days," according to Netflix. In the near future, the company is also planning to bring profiles to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and newer-model connected TVs and Blu-ray players. The Steve Jobs biopic starring Ashton Kutcher, aptly titled Jobs, is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on August 16th. With the release date steadily approaching, a publicity push for the film is in full force. Just last week we reported on how Jobs star Ashton Kutcher appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno where he discussed, among other things, what motivated him to take on the role of Jobs.

Quickly add new Tweetbot mute keyword using Keyboard Maestro
I love me some Twitter, but I find that some days the Internet is talking about something I just don't care about. That's where 'mute filters' come in. Tweetbot lets you mute words or phrases and will hide subsequent 'tweets' that match your filter.
The problem is that adding a new "mute keyword" to Tweetbot requires way too many steps.
Switch to the "Mutes" tab
Click 'Edit'
Click '+'
Click "Mute Keyword"
Click inside the Keyword field because for some frustrating reason Tweetbot doesn't put the cursor there automatically.
Click "Save"
Click "Done"

Photos show alleged rear shell for fifth-gen iPad
New photos show what is claimed to be the rear shell of a fifth-generation iPad. Published by FanaticFone, the images depict a design that initially appears similar to that of the fourth-gen iPad in terms of things like port and button placements. The site notes, though, that the shell measures 24x16.8cm, slightly smaller than the iPad's current 24x18.6. Accordingly, the side bezels have been shrunk while leaving screen space intact.

NVIDIA Shield teardown dives deep inside the massive handheld
The folks at iFixit are braver souls than us, taking on NVIDIA's tank-like new gaming handheld, the Shield, in a teardown. Sony macht im ersten Quartal 35 Millionen Dollar Gewinn

Sonys erster Quartalsbericht dieses Finanzjahres hat einen Gewinn ergeben, wenn er auch klein ausfällt. Am meisten Anteil hat dabei die Mobilabteilung: der Umsatz stieg im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal, was teilweise am Wert des Yen liegt, aber auch an besseren Verkäufen von Smartphones (9,6 Millionen) und einem durchschnittlich höheren Verkaufspreis. Die Spieleabteilung gab leicht nach, PS3, PSP und PS2 wurden etwas weniger verkauft und mehr Geld wurde für die Entwicklung der PS4 ausgegeben. Leaked Samsung 'Galaxy Folder' suggests return of the dual-display flip phone
It feels like yesterday we were discussing the death of form factor diversity in the smartphone world, and now Samsung comes up with this: a mid-range clamshell model called the Galaxy Folder (SHV-E400K) with displays on both sides of the lid. Official Imgur app for iOS hits the App Store
Rejoice, Imgur fans. A few weeks after Imgur CEO Alan Schaaf intimated that an official app for iOS was on the way, the day has finally come. Imgur for iOS was recently released and gives fans of the photo sharing site an easy way to upload photos on the go and keep up with the latest viral photos making their way around the web.
Interestingly enough, the Android version of the app was actually released before the iOS version, a phenomenon Schaaf attributed to Apple's application approval process. Specifically, Schaaf said that the app's initial submission to the App Store was rejected on account of the app being associated with copyrighted and illicit content.

Sony's Q1 earnings show a $35 million net profit, mobile revenue jumps 36 percent
Sony's first earnings report of the new financial year is in and it's eked out a net profit, albeit a small one. The $35 million net profit is an improvement from last year's results for the same period, and the good news is most pronounced in its Mobile Products & Communications department. Revenue grew 36 percent from last year, partially due to changes in the value of the yen, but also thanks to higher sales for smartphones, and a higher average selling price.

Two more Apple directors sell stock options, pocket $19 million
Less than a week after Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer sold some of his AAPL holdings to the tune of $16.4 million, two other members of Apple's board have let go of smaller amounts of stock, grossing a total of $19 million before taxes in recent days. Fix coming soon for iOS 'power adapter' hack, says Apple
Apple says it has already fixed an obscure security flaw that could have allowed hackers to access data on an iOS device through the use of a specially-designed custom USB device that looks like a charger but in fact contains a tiny Linux-powered computer designed to insert malware. The fix is already present in the most recent iOS 7 beta and will be incorporated into the OS when it is released to the public this fall, the company says, and involves notifying users whenever they connect to another computer, even through the power adapter.

Apple App Store 2.3x more profitable than higher-volume Google Play
For the first time, according to analytics firm App Annie, the Google Play store has exceeded the Apple iOS App Store in downloads by about 10 percent. Apple remains the undisputed leader in revenue, with 2.3 times the revenue. The same study noted that games account for nearly 40 percent of both stores download volume, with 70 percent of the iOS App Store's revenue, and 80 percent of Google Play's.

iOS 7 Beta 4 Contains Fix For Malicious Charger Hack
Earlier this year, a trio of computer scientists discovered a flaw in iOS 6 that would theoretically allow an iPhone or an iPad to be hacked in a minute using a “malicious USB charger.” The researchers demonstrated the hack at the Black Hat Convention in Las Vegas today, showing off a custom built charger that was plugged into an iPhone. Apple widely expanding 'ground truth' recruiting for Maps
Continuing the company's commitment to make its own Maps program the equal or better of any other, Apple has posted over three dozen new job postings on its website seeking "ground truth" verification and software engineering specialists for locations all over the world. The expansion follows hiring for "ground truth" staff back in February to help the company make its maps of rural Australia more accurate. Apple also recently acquired two mapping companies -- Locationary, which specialized in business listings, and HopStop for transit data.

Apple posts warning on dealing with spam text messages
While under normal circumstances most users would never see an unwanted or "spam" message in the OS X and iOS program Messages, Apple has now set up abuse reporting mechanism to help deal with those who have the issue. Using the email address imessage.spam@icloud.com, users can send a screenshot of the unwanted message, phone number or email address of the spammer or harrasser, and time/date info on the message. Unwanted or spam SMS and MMS messages should still be reported to users' cellular providers rather than Apple.

Twine uses your interests to match you with singles
Twine (free) launched today, and it offers a novel approach to the age old problem of meeting other singles. While niche sites like Cupidtino come and go, your Facebook profile, check-ins and activity provide a map of your interests. Twine looks at those interests, the people around you (more or less), and suggests a "twine" for you to try and connect. You then chat semi-anonymously, and if you hit it off you can later reveal your profile pic and personal info.
Design
Twine is absolutely lovely to look at. There's a minimum of buttons, subtle design elements are lovingly crafted and the typography and textures are elegant. The app oozes class, which is good for a singles app.

Apple Directors Bill Campbell and Millard Drexler Exercise and Sell Stock Options Worth $13.8 Million [Mac Blog]
Apple directors Bill Campbell and Millard Drexler recently exercised and sold more than 42,000 Director Stock Options according to documents filed today with the SEC. Drexler, the chairman and CEO of clothing retailer J. Crew, exercised a series of Director Stock Option grants from 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, for a total of 32,562 shares at exercise prices ranging from $113.62 to $202. He then turned around and sold the shares for roughly $449 each. Drexler netted roughly $9.5 million from the haul, the stock options being by far the most significant benefit of being on Apple's Board of Directors. Four US senators join chorus calling for overturn of ITC Apple ban
As the deadline nears for the ITC's ban on some older models of iPhones and iPads to take effect, a growing chorus of companies and individuals have begun calling for an overturning of the ban by the Obama administration in the wake of a lack of action. Two Republican and two Democratic senators have signed a letter urging United States Trade Representative Michael Froman (who has been delegated the decision) to reverse the ITC ban, mostly on the grounds that sales injunctions over Standards-Essential Patent (SEP) disputes are unnecessary.

Google Play tops App Store in downloads, but App Store still leads in revenues
In the second quarter of 2013 Google's Play Store bested the App Store in overall downloads by roughy 10%, according to new data released by analytics firm App Annie. This is in contrast to the company's Q1 2013 and Q4 2012 reports which both showed Apple leading in overall downloads.
However, while the Play Store now has the lead in overall downloads, Google's app marketplace is still far behind Apple's in terms of app monetization. In Q2 2013 the App Store generated approximately 2.3 times the revenue of Google Play. The gap in this category is slightly smaller than it was in Q1 2013 when the App Store raked in 2.6 times the revenue of Google Play.

This weekend we reported on an eclectic and extensive collection of vintage 1980s Apple commercials that were uploaded to the ever growing YouTube channel EveryAppleAds. Apple's older commercials are rather amusing to watch. They're cheesy, fun, and clearly represent a time when manufacturers really had to make a case explaining why anyone might want a computer in the first place. Put differently, watching vintage 80s Apple commercials is great.
But you know what's even better?

XCOM publisher points to game's success as proof premium pricing works for iOS games
When 2K Games and Firaxis released their iOS port of the popular console title XCOM: Enemy Unknown, they decided to buck the conventional wisdom that mobile games needed mobile pricing. Rather than a price in line with the $.99 to $5.99 gamers have come to expect in the iOS store, XCOM was released for $19.99. Google to end support for Google Catalog on iOS
Google Catalogs, a favorite of online window shoppers whose bosses have web filters, has announced it will be ending support for its apps on August 15.
