Researchers turn standard microscope into billion-pixel imaging beast
A team of researchers at the California Institute of Technology, led by Professor Changhuei Yang, have figured out a way to crank their microscopy up to 11. Usually, scientists are forced between a rock and a hard place: they can have high res images of small areas or low resolution pictures of larger fields. First-time smartphone buyers in UK seeking iPhone 4 drive sales
A new sales report from Kantar Wordpanel ComTech for the period of May to June 2013 showed Apple enjoyed a sales surge thanks to an old friend; the iPhone 4. The company jumped 5.2 percentage points to 30.5 percent of the British smartphone market. And those sales were thanks to the iPhone 4.

Apple Retail Employees File Class Action Lawsuit Over 'Bag Check' Lost Wages
A pair of former Apple Retail employees have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple for lost wages. The lawsuit stems from an Apple retail policy that requires employees have their personal bags and purses inspected by managers before leaving the store for breaks, lunches and at the end of a shift. The lawsuit alleges that employees are made to wait -- off the clock -- for as long as 5 to 15 minutes per shift while waiting for a manager to inspect their belongings for stolen property. The policy is in effect at all Apple Retail stores and could potentially affect thousands of employees going back more than 10 years. News: Apple retail workers file suit over unpaid bag searches
A group of former Apple retail store employees in New York and Los Angeles have filed a class action suit against the company for lost wages due to lengthy bag searches. The suit claims that improper practices include subjecting hourly employees to “personal package and bag searches,” which are illegal and require workers to wait in line off-the-clock to get clearance checks when leaving for meal breaks and at the end of their shifts.…

Black market Genius Bar appointments
You've got to love Chinese entrepreneurs. Today the Beijing Morning News reported on how scalpers are grabbing all of the Genius Bar appointments at Chinese Apple Stores, then selling those appointments on the black market.
Getting an appointment at one of the crowded stores apparently costs about ten yuan (about US$1.60), which sounds like a bargain compared to waiting all day in the store without an appointment to talk to a Genius. USPTO issues another rejection to Apple's pinch to zoom patent
Apple's had another 'pinch' from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office over its pinch-to-zoom feature. According to Foss Patents, The Patent Office has rejected all claims Apple made on behalf of its pinch-to zoom-API patent. Samsung, which has been pressing that the patent be thrown out, says it has a workaround for the feature so it can use it on its own products. Apple has been disputing the legality of any attempt to side-step the patent.

Apple today released the fourth beta of iOS 7, which begins a number of improvements, changes, and bug fixes to the operating system, including a designed lockscreen, Notification Center improvements, an updated look for Safari’s bookmark menu, and more. iOS 7 beta 4 also brings a slew of minor interface tweaks and improvements that make the fourth version of the beta feel both faster and more polished. News: iPhone fingerprint sensor confirmed by iOS 7 beta 4?
A discovery in iOS 7 beta 4 appears to confirm that an upcoming iPhone will include a fingerprint sensor. Hamza Sood tweeted a picture of a folder titled “BiometricKitUI.axbundle” within the code of the upcoming operating system. Starbucks to expand wireless charging program
AllThingsD reports that Starbucks is expanding its experimental wireless charging program to the West Coast. The program will roll out at 10 stores in the San Jose area in August.
It introduced the program in a number Boston-area stores stores using Duracell Powermats, a PMA-standard wireless charging mat which allows those phones with compatible Duracell cases to simply rest it on the mat to receive power.

My husband was excited and kept egging me on, but I was pretty nervous. This was the sort of thing that tested your marriage, and the only thing standing between us and defeat was our ability to work as a team. Finally, I agreed to play Spaceteam with him.

Apple has released a beta version of iTunes 11.1 with support for iTunes Radio, Apple's new Pandora-like music streaming service. The beta has a build number of iTunes 11.1b44. iTunes Radio is a new internet radio service built into iOS 7, the next version of the Apple TV and the next version of iTunes on Windows and Mac, all expected to be released this fall. Apple's manufacturing partner Pegatron under fire for working conditions
Last year, Apple's primary Chinese manufacturing partner Foxconn came under intense scrutiny for complaints about how factory workers were being treated. Now another partner, Pegatron, is facing similar charges of poor treatment of workers.
An upcoming report from China Labor Watch outlined in the Wall Street Journal notes a number of claims against Pegatron:
Pegatron allegedly withholds worker IDs so that Pegatron employees cannot choose to work elsewhere because they lack proper ID.
Living conditions are supposedly poor, with "30-minute waits to enter their production facility, tight living quarters, and packed cafeterias."

Apple to Release iOS 7 Beta 4 Today, Two More Betas Coming?
MacRumors Forum poster aibnr noticed earlier today that the iOS 7 Beta 4 download appeared to be posted on Apple's developer servers early this morning, ahead of an expected release today. If released today, Beta 4, with a rumored build number of 11a4435d, would come three weeks after Beta 3 was released at the beginning of July. Clicking the purported download link, available here, returns a 'Your session has expired' error page. Other URLs with similar build numbers, on the other hand, return an 'Access Denied' error message.

USPTO Again Rejects Apple's Claim of Pinch-to-Zoom Patent [iOS Blog]

Microsoft pro Apple wegen iPhone-4-Bann
Microsoft stellt sich auf Apples Seite wegen des drohenden iPhone-4-Banns. Als Teil der Business Software Alliance (BSA), hat Microsoft argumentiert, dass Produktverbote wegen Verstoßes von gewissen Standard-Patenten nicht ausgesprochen werden sollten, allerhöchstens in ungewöhnlichen Situationen. Das Wall Street Journal berichtet, dass Microsoft als Mitglied der BSA sich für Apple ausgesprochen hat. Dem Hersteller aus Cupertino droht Anfang August ein Produktverbot für das iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS und iPhone 3G. Diese Smartphones sollen gegen Patente von Samsung verstoßen. Zunächst hatte die US-Handelskommission vor einiger Zeit pro Apple entschieden, dann wurde der Fall erneut überprüft und einige der Patente wurden neu bewertet.

Strategy Analytics: Android beats iOS in Q2 tablet shipments, Windows gains ground
All in all, global tablet shipments were up for Q2, according to new numbers released by analyst firm Strategy Analytics. Factoring in white-box units, the market saw 51.7 million tablets shipped in that time period -- that's up 43-percent compared to the same time last year. A lot of that good news can be chalked up to Android's success. Apple: Team in Boston arbeitet an Siri-Verbesserungen
Gemäss einem Bericht des Portals «xconomy» hat Apple in den letzten Monaten in Boston, in unmittelbarer Nähe zur Spitzen-Universität MIT, ein Kompetenzzentrum zur Verbesserung der Spracherkennung aufgebaut. Für dieses Zentrum soll Apple namhafte Spezialisten im Bereich der Spracherkennung engagiert haben. Die meisten dieser Sprach-Spezialisten haben angeblich zuvor für das Unternehmen «VoiceSignal Technologies» gearbeitet, welches im Jahr 2007 von Nuance übernommen worden ist.
Apple plant, das Zentrum in den nächsten Monaten zu vergrössern. Für diese Theorie sprechen diverse Stellenanzeigen, welche auf der Webseite von Apple aufgeschaltet worden sind.

Apple überwacht Arbeitsrechte mit neuem Ausschuss
Apple hat mit dem «Academic Advisory Board» einen neuen Ausschuss geschaffen, um die Einhaltung der Menschen- und Arbeitnehmer-Rechte bei den Apple-Zulieferern von einer weiteren unabhängigen Instanz überwachen zu lassen. Insgesamt werden acht Professoren unter der Leitung von Richard Locke Apples «Supplier Responsibility Program» kontrollieren. Um die nötige Unabhängigkeit zu wahren, arbeiten die Professoren auf freiwilliger Basis.
Der Ausschuss wird sich gemäss den Aussagen von Richard Locke vor allem auf drei Aufgabenbereiche konzentrieren. Zum einen werden Apples aktuelle Anstrengungen im Bereich der Arbeitnehmerrechte analysiert und bewertet. Um die Arbeitsbedingungen bei den Zulieferern noch besser beurteilen zu können, sollen zudem neue Messmethoden implementiert werden. Als drittes sollen unter Beachtung der aktuellen Forschungs-Ergebnisse die Anstrengungen von Apple im Bereich der Arbeitsbedingungen verbessert werden.

Aus dem Auge aus dem Sinn. Das ist mein Motto, wenn es um die Abwägung zwischen Datensicherheit und Datenportabilität geht. Das NSA-Thema hat das Problem wieder einmal in meinen Sichtbereich verschoben. Neu ist das freilich nicht: Mir ist bewusst, dass alle online abgelegten Daten auch abgegriffen werden können. Mir war es nur egal ("Aus dem Auge aus dem Sinn").
Die aktuelle Diskussion führt mir ebenfalls erneut vor’s Auge, welche Arten von Dokumenten ich z.B. in der Dropbox aufbewahre:
Öffentliche Dokumente. Diese teile ich bereits mit anderen. Diese Blog-Postings oder Blog-Bilder gehören dazu, ebenso meine sämtlichen Aktivitäten in sozialen Netzwerken.
Nicht öffentliche Dokumente, die aber auch öffentlich sein könnten. In diese Grauzone fallen z.B. ausgewählte Urlaubsfotos (ohne Personen) und meine Spanisch-Vokabeln, die bereits mit ausgewählten Personen geteilt werden, teils auch parallel bearbeitet.

Apple Developer Portal teilweise wieder online
Apple hat am Wochenende die Entwickler über den neusten Stand beim Developer-Portal informiert. Seit dem Wochenende ist das Developer-Portal teilweise wieder erreichbar, wie Apple in einer Mitteilung an die registrierten Entwickler schreibt. Zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt (Montag 09:00 Uhr) sind die Zertifikate und Profile, iTunes Connect, das iOS-Dev-Center, das Mac-Dev-Center, das Safari-Dev-Center, die Software Downloads sowie der Bug Reporter wieder erreichbar. Weiterhin nicht erreichbar sind beispielsweise das Member Center, das Developer Forum sowie der technische Support. Alle diejenigen Developer-Mitgliedschaften, welche während der technischen Störung auslaufen oder ausgelaufen sind, werden von Apple automatisch verlängert. Damit bleiben die Apps dieser Entwickler im App Store erhalten.

Bob Mansfield nicht mehr Teil der Apple-Firmenleitung — neu bei «Special Projects»
Apples «Senior Vice President of Technologies» Bob Mansfield wird seit gestern nicht mehr auf der Webseite des Apple-Führungsteams gelistet. Laut einer Stellungsnahme von Apple ist Mansfield kein Mitglied des Exec-Teams mehr. Mansfield arbeite aber weiterhin bei Apple — an «speziellen Projekten», wie es heisst, und berichte direkte an CEO Tim Cook. Der Grund für den Wechsel wurde von Apple nicht kommuniziert. Auch ist nicht bekannt ob es bald einen neuen «SVP of Technologies» geben wird.
Mansfield kam 1999 mit dem Aufkauf von Raycer Graphics zu Apple — bei Raycer Graphics war er Entwicklungs VP. Noch früher war Mansfield bei SGI und dort unter anderem verantwortlich für die Entwicklung von Microprozessoren.
