Apple TV outage: TV shows menu not visible
According to a tweet from a few minutes ago, since verified by our staff, there's an issue with Apple TV in the US at the current time. The TV shows menu, which is normally accompanied by the Movies, Music, Computers, and Settings menus, is AWOL. The first sign of this issue appeared in a series of tweets by @CraigGrannell:
Apple's System Status web page doesn't cover Apple TV, so there's no sign of the outage on the Apple site. We'll update this post as news becomes available.

Apple sued over Find my iPhone
Well this is certainly a fitting story given a recent report that Apple remains the top target for patent trolls.
Gigaom is reporting that a nonpracticing entity based out of Texas is suing Apple, alleging that services such as Find my Friends and Find my iPhone infringe upon their patents. SimCity on Mac is "totally unplayable"
The Windows launch of SimCity didn't exactly go smoothly in March. There were issues with offline play -- namely, it doesn't exist -- and servers were flooded and impossible to connect to. But those issues seem to pale in comparison to today's release of the Mac version, with many players unable to even install the game.
The official EA forums are overrun with Mac gamers desperately trying to get their purchases to work correctly on computers ranging from brand new Retina MacBooks to iMacs that are just a few weeks old. I've been told by one player that in order to even download the game, he was forced to reinstall EA's Origin download application three times.

Text Exploit Crashes OS X 10.8 and iOS 6 Apps [Mac Blog]
An exploit that causes both Macs and iOS devices to crash was discovered yesterday, reports 9to5Mac. A specific sequence of Arabic characters causes an error that will crash any application that uses the WebKit engine in either Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) or iOS 6. When sent via text message, iMessage, Messages, or typed in Safari, the sequence of characters will cause apps to crash. This bug does not work on any other operating systems and does not allow anyone else to access your computer remotely because of it, but being a recipient (or even sender) of these characters may make your Messages app unusable, cause Safari/Chrome to crash, or not allow for scanning of SSIDs

SimCity Finally Launches on the Mac With Native Version and Cross-Platform Servers
After being delayed for six months, EA has finally released the Mac version of the new SimCity. The game was originally set to come out in February of this year, but EA decided to delay it to "ensure a great experience" for players. AppleCare Support Employees Begin Training on iOS 7
AppleCare employees have begun training on support issues related to iOS 7, according to 9to5Mac. The site claims the training must be completed by the second week in September, when Apple is expected to unveil the final version of iOS 7 for launch in the middle of the following week. Because of significant changes to the user interface in iOS 7, Apple is reportedly increasing the hours of part-time AppleCare support staff and requiring Mac and OS X AppleCare technicians to cross train in iOS 7 in order to be ready for heavy anticipated call volume. Flickr today updated its iOS app with some significant and eye-catching improvements.
First and foremost, the new Flickr mobile app not only introduces new filters, but also live filters.

Eigenwille Konzepte, die vielleicht sogar Wirklichkeit werden. Samsung hat zwei mobile Drucker gezeigt, die überraschende Funktionen haben. Mailbox iOS email client updated with cloud search
The popular Gmail email client for iOS Mailbox has been updated to allow for cloud searching through messages. The new feature in the version 1.5 update means users no longer have to have their emails downloaded to their device to search -- something that is incredibly handy if you have years worth of emails.
In addition to cloud search capabilities, Mailbox 1.5 lets you set a unique signature for each email account in the app. That means if you have, for example, three Gmail accounts (Mailbox allows up to five), you can have a unique signature each that's automatically applied.

Tipp: Immer nur ein Programm im Vordergrund
Durch eine versteckte Einstellung wird in OS X immer nur das aktuell aktive Programm angezeigt — alle anderen Programme werden automatisch im Hintergrund ausgeblendet. Dies kann insbesondere — aber natürlich nicht nur — für Computer-Anfänger nützlich sein. Diese Einstellung kann über das Terminal aktiviert werden:
default write com.apple.dock single-app -bool TRUE
Nach einem Dock-Neustart (z.B. über den Terminal-Befehl killall Dock) wird bei jedem Klick auf ein Dock-Icon das ausgewählte Programm angezeigt und alle anderen ausgeblendet. Dieses «nur ein Programm im Vordergrund» funktioniert jedoch nur bei der Programm-Auswahl über das Dock. Wird das Programm hingegen über den Application-Switcher (⌘⇥) gewechselt, bleiben alle ausgewählten Programme im Vordergrund.
Wieder rückgängig gemacht werden kann diese Einstellung mittels:

Tipp: Kopieren und Einsetzen ohne Formatierungen
Wird in OS X ein Text mittels ⌘C kopiert, bleibt die original Formatierung (Schrift, Grösse, Farbe und Schnitt) bestehen wenn man den Text in einem Programm wie TextEdit oder Mail wieder mit ⌘V einsetzt. Nicht selten würde man den Text-Abschnitt aber gerne ohne die original Formatierung bzw. mit den aktuell verwendeten Formatierungen einsetzen.
In den meisten Programmen gelingt das ganz einfach durch das gleichzeitige Drücken der Tasten ⇧ und ⌥ — mittels ⌘⇧⌥V wird der in der Zwischenablage befindliche formatierte Text also als reiner Text im aktuell verwendeten Format eing

OS X vulnerability allows superuser access to hackers
Another vulnerability has popped up in OS X, and this time it's not Java-related. The developers of Metasploit, a software utility that makes it easier for people to abuse vulnerabilities in OS's for security testing purposes, have added a new Unix Sudo vulnerability to their software. As OS X runs a modified version of Unix, this means it is vulnerable. As Arstechnica reports:

In den letzten Jahren stand Apple oftmals aufgrund von Patent-Streitigkeiten im Licht der Öffentlichkeit. Grosses Aufsehen erregten insbesondere die grossen Prozesse mit Samsung sowie kleinere Streitigkeiten mit anderen namhaften IT-Unternehmen.
Unbemerkt von der Öffentlichkeit sind Apple und andere grosse IT-Unternehmen ins Visier sogenannter «Patent-Trolle» geraten. Dabei handelt es sich um Unternehmen, deren einziger Zweck es ist, Patente über Jahrzehnte zu halten. Im Bedarfsfall können die Patent-Trolle von den Unternehmen, welche die geschützte Technologie (wissentlich oder unwissentlich) in die eigenen Produkte eingebaut haben, eine Lizenzgebühr zu verlangen.

Im ersten Schritt macht es Entwicklern leicht, Facebook in ihre Spiele zu integrieren. Ob das Spiel dabei im Netz, auf iOS oder Android läuft, ist dabei ganz egal. Ergebnisse können gepostet und Freunde eingeladen werden, mitzuzocken oder das Spiel selbst auszuprobieren. Der wichtigere Aspekt: Spiele können auch direkt auf Facebook veröffentlicht werden. Skype is working on 3D video call capability, is held back by current technology's limitations
In an interview with the BBC (which has canned making its own 3D content), Skype's VP Mark Gillett says that the Microsoft VoIP service has been working on developing 3D calls. Don't expect the capability to arrive soon, however, as Gillet soon added that it could be years before the tech gets to Skype users. Apple bestätigt Übernahme von AlgoTrim
Gestern tauchten Gerüchte auf, wonach Apple das schwedische Startup «AlgoTrim» übernommen haben soll. Gegenüber AllThingsD hat Apple am Abend die Übernahme der Firma dann offiziell bestätigt. Wie bereits früher getätigte Startup-Übernahmen wurde auch dieser Kauf nicht weiter kommentiert.
Bei AlgoTrim handelt es sich um ein Unternehmen, welches sich auf Algorithmen zur Datenkompression spezialisiert hat. Dank der von AlgoTrim entwickelten Technologie kann die Bearbeitungszeit und die Grösse einer digitalen Datei deutlich reduziert werden. Auch wenn Apple kein Anwendungsgebiet für die neu erworbene Technologie nennt, könnte Apple den Algorithmus verwenden, um zum Beispiel die Aufnahme von Fotos und Videos auf den iOS-Geräten speichertechnisch effizienter zu gestalten. Apple stellt am 10. September wohl kein iPad vor
Gerüchten zufolge sollte am Special-Event von Apple, welches am 10. September erwartet wird, nicht nur wie bereits länger vermutet ein neues iPhone vorgestellt werden, sondern auch eine neue Generation des iPads. Aus dem Bericht des Bloomberg-Insiders ging allerdings nicht klar hervor, ob nur das klassische iPad oder auch das iPad mini überarbeitet werden soll.
Der üblicherweise bestens informierte Jim Dalrymple vom Blog «The Loop» kommentierte diese Meldung mit einem schlichten «Nope». Damit ist es wohl eher unwahrscheinlich, dass Apple am erwarteten Event vom 10. September auch neue iPads vorstellt.

OS X Vulnerability Can Allow Superuser Access to Unauthorized Users
Users looking to exploit a vulnerability in the Sudo Unix command, originally reported back in March, have received some assistance, reports Ars Technica. The developers of Metasploit, software that makes it easier to misuse vulnerabilities in operating systems and applications, have added the Sudo vulnerability to their software suite. All versions of OS X from OS X Lion 10.7 through the current Mountain Lion 10.8.4 remain vulnerable. Blackbar: A fascinating word/puzzle game and cautionary tale
The first thing that caught my attention about Blackbar (US$2.99) was the icon, showing a black-and-white photos of a woman with a black censor bar across her eyes. After that, it was finding out that developers Neven Mrgan and James Moore were involved in the project. Mrgan was formerly a designer and developer with Panic, and then worked on the popular retro game The Incident.
If you're basing your thoughts about Blackbar on The Incident, don't. This is a totally different and unique genre. Rather than an arcade game, this is a thoughtful and thought-provoking word and puzzle game. I love word games, which immediately attracted me to Blackbar.

Logitech intros Ultrathin Touch Mouse T631 for Mac
Some people just cannot stand trackpads. My wife is one of those people, and every time I sit down at her iMac I just roll my eyes in disgust. She's using a six-year-old wireless mouse (Logitech, no less) that is ergonomic and all that, but it doesn't even have a touch surface on it like Apple's Magic Mouse. Twitter today rolled out an update to its iOS app which introduces a new way for users to view conversations.
Under the new conversation scheme, conversations between people you follow are connected via a blue line. The aim here is to make it easier to keep track of conversations of interest in what can often be a flurry of Twitter activity.

Review: Pic Scanner is a good idea but incomplete
The 'free' Pic Scanner app for iPhone and iPad (universal) has a lot of promise but fumbles on the details. The app lets you put up to three photos you want to digitize on a blank piece of white paper. Focus and snap, and the app automatically will crop the photos and let you work on them individually, applying filters like sepia.
It is at the next step that the app runs into trouble. You can save a couple of images to the camera roll or mail them, but after that the app wants you to buy the ability to save and share for US$2.99. I suppose a minimal number of tries will show you how it works, but in my view that's just too stingy. I think it would be better to call it a $2.99 app and be done with it. I think people will be irritated with

BitTorrent Sync lands on iOS, allows you to securely sync files between devices
Moving big files from one device to another is no easy task, especially when mobile devices are involved. BitTorrent aims to make the process of sharing large files a bit easier by bringing BitTorrent Sync to the iPhone and iPad.
BitTorrent Sync uses a peer-to-peer protocol to sync your files. T-Mobile Employee Blackout Dates Support September 20 iPhone Release Date
T-Mobile has implemented vacation blackout dates between September 20 and 22, reports TmoNews, potentially confirming a prospective September 20 release date for the iPhone 5S and 5C that was first leaked earlier this month by Japanese business newspaper Nikkei. During the blackout period, employees will be unable to take vacation time to ensure that T-Mobile has adequate staff on hand for a large release event. Similar blackouts have been instituted for the launch of previous iPhone models and other high-profile products.

Metro: Last Light to arrive on Mac Sept. 10
With much fanfare, Metro: Last Light was released this past May on the PC, PS 3 and Xbox 360. Now comes word that the popular first person shooter will be making its way to the Mac come September 10. The title will be available both via the Mac App Store and via Steam. Note that a Linux version of the title is slated for release later this year.
Deep Silver and 4A Games today confirmed that a dedicated Mac version of Metro: Last Light will be released on September 10th, 2013 via the App Store and Steam
