Verizon to host event on July 23rd, likely involves new Droid devices
Verizon is sending out invites to the press regarding a mystery event next week. While the invite doesn't reveal which products are set to be announced, we have a pretty solid indication of what to expect: we're told that the event will involve "the next generation of one of [its] most popular family of devices." Given that the Droid is Big Red's most popular device lineup -- not to mention the fact that the rumor mill indicates a series of new Motorola-made Droids are on the way in the near future -- it's quite likely we can expect to see two or three devices decked out with Verizon's favorite brand.

Google reportedly pitching streaming online TV service to multiple media companies
Streaming online television services appears to be the next big thing in the Valley -- at least, if you ask Google, Apple, Intel and other tech giants that are considering making a move in that direction. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has approached several media companies about licensing TV channels for such a service, which involves offering cable TV-like channel packages over broadband. Yahoo announces Q2 2013 earnings: $1.13b revenue, $137 million income
The closing bell has rung, and Yahoo has released its earnings for the second quarter of 2013. What's the final verdict? Compared year-to-year over the same quarter last year, it's mostly good news for the company: GAAP income is at $137 million (up 150 percent), while GAAP revenue comes in at $1.13 billion (down seven percent). GAAP net earnings came in at $331 million, which is a 46 percent increase from this time last year, while non-GAAP came out at $386 million, a six percent jump. Not bad, given the number of acquisitions the company made this quarter -- nine, to be precise, including Tumblr.

Nikkei: NEC to halt smartphone business after Lenovo deal falls through
Barely a month after NEC introduced the Terrain (seen above), its first phone in the US in eight years, and it looks like the company is about to give up its smartphone business for good. According to the Nikkei, NEC has been trying to sell its loss-leading mobile division to Lenovo since late last year, especially since the two already have an existing PC partnership. However, it looks like that deal has fallen through and the sale is no longer in the cards. The Nikkei reports that NEC hopes to focus on just its feature phone lineup for now, and to sell off a few mobile-related patents in the process.

News: Report: iPhone 5S production to ramp, $300-$400

Short duration video with Briefly
Briefly from Eternal Storms Software is a Macintosh app that turns your still shots into a video. The end result is called a still motion video. The Briefly demo on the site is impressive, but unlike most demos, I think anyone could create similar movies.
The iOS version of Briefly is under development and I think it will be a winner. As a Macintosh app, not so much, at least for my needs. Don't get me wrong, Briefly works wonders

Outlook Web App comes to iOS devices in native form
It hasn't been hard to get Exchange support on iOS devices, but there's some for whom third-party apps and web clients just won't do. Ransomware posing as an FBI notice targets OS X users
Malwarebytes Unpacked is reporting that cyber-criminals looking to make a quick buck have begun targeting unsuspecting OS X users by hijacking their web browser and posting a warning message purporting to be from the FBI.
The fake message casts a wide net and alerts users that their computer has been locked down because they've either downloaded copyrighted content, viewed illegal pornographic content, or have unknowingly fallen prey to malware.
The "FBI Notice" then informs users that they can unlock their computer for US$300, payable, of course, via a GreenDot MoneyPak card. The report notes that the ransomewar

Chrome beta brings improved suggestions to address bar, Android users get new WebRTC benefits
Google has rolled out some changes to its Chrome browser on a number of fronts today, with new betas hitting Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. Whatsapp for iOS updated with multiple photo support, iCloud chat history backup
We here at Engadget love app updates, especially when new features and functionality are involved. WhatsApp is doing this very thing with version 2.10.1, which was released today. The refresh offers a few pleasant additions, such as the ability to send multiple photos to someone at the same time, as well as the option to backup and restore your iCloud chat history. iPhone 5S Production Will Reportedly Begin Later This Month
According to AllThingsD, a production ramp up of the next generation iPhone should begin around the end of this month, confirming a recent; report from Jefferies' Peter Misek. Instagram Designer Tim Van Damme moving to Dropbox
Ready to tackle new territory, Tim Van Damme, the Lead Designer for Instagram, will be leaving the Facebook-acquired company to join up with Dropbox. Van Damme has a healthy track record, having designed for Instagram since January of 2012, and with Gowalla and TenForce prior to that time. He'll join former Facebook designers Rasmus Andersson and Soleio Cuervo in his new position starting in early August; in the meantime, he'll be taking a few weeks off, though we wonder if he'll be sharing any pictures of his vacation or the amazing food on you-know-what.

First off, apologies for the delay in getting the Rumor Roundup out this week. I had a death in the family; my iPhone 4S prematurely kicked the bucket. It's been living on borrowed time since a bad motorcycle accident last November; I'd hoped it would last until Apple launched the iPhone 5S or whatever it ends up being called, but it was not meant to be.
Therefore, the time I'd normally have spent chugging vodka martinis while writing the Roundup was instead frittered away on wrestling with iCloud while I tried to get it to properly restore a backup to my shiny new iPhone 5.

OS X Users Hit by Ransomware Websites Posing as FBI Notices
Malwarebytes takes a look at a method cyber-criminals have begun using to target Mac users with "ransomware", hijacking the user's browser with a notice demanding payment of $300 in order to release control of the application. While similar malware has affected Windows systems for a number of years, Mac users have only rarely seen such efforts targeted at themselves.The ransomware page is being pushed onto unsuspecting users browsing regular sites but in particular when searching for popular keywords. Warnings appearing to be from the FBI tell the victim: “you have been viewing or distributing prohibited Pornographic content.. To unlock your computer and to avoid other legal consequences, you are obligated to pay a release fee of $300.”

Apple, Samsung will hit appeals court in August
Computerworld is reporting that Apple and Samsung are headed to the U.S. Court of Appeals where Apple will try and convince the court to issue an injunction regarding infringing Samsung products that relate back to last summer's Apple/Samsung case in California.
Apple and Samsung will appear before the court on August 9th and each side will present a 15-minute oral argument.
If you recall, Apple last summer was on the winning end of a $1.05 billion judgement against Samsung, a figure that was subsequently reduced by $450 million on account of jury miscalculations.

Levitating objects with sound waves isn't anything new, but a team from Switzerland has taken it to the next level by rotating and moving objects as they float. In fact, the researchers were able to manipulate a number of objects mid-air, including water droplets, inserting DNA into cells and mixing up a little instant coffee. The MacTech Conference is expertly run and has always been loaded with good sessions and an abundance of opportunities for the IT crowd and developers. This year MacTech is cranking up the volume, with a number of enhancements plus a newer, better venue. So what's new?
The new venue is the Manhattan Beach Marriott. There are now three full days of content. The yearly upgrade plan is called AT&T Next and allows customers to buy a device with monthly installments. Uber Updates iPhone App with Fare Splitting [iOS Blog]
Popular private taxi service Uber yesterday announced an update to its app that includes fare splitting, finally allowing users to easily split fares with friends within the app. Previously, users had to manually split payments before or after an Uber payment was made. Now users just have to choose the friends they want to split the fare with and wait for them to accept the fare-split. Apple solicits ideas from retail workers on selling iPhones
A little less than two weeks ago we reported that Tim Cook spearheaded a three-hour long meeting geared towards increasing the percentage of iPhone sales that occur at Apple retail stores. As it stands now, the vast majority of iPhones are purchased online, from carrier stores, and from brick and mortar retailers like Best Buy.
Now 9to5Mac is reporting that Apple has taken to asking its international retail employees for advice on ways to increase iPhone sales at Apple retail store locations.
In a message sent out to retail employees last week, Apple explicitly asks for great iPhone ideas from retail employees below the manager level.

Apple unveiled a new version of Logic Pro today. Logic Pro X includes a new drummer feature that'll play drums along with your song. There's also a Flex Pitch feature to easily edit the pitch of an audio recording and remote control feature that lets you control Logic Pro via your iPad.

HTC and Sony prevail over patent troll WiLan
A federal jury has just taken a bite out of patent licensing firm WiLan's business plan, ruling that HTC, Sony, Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson didn't infringe any of the four patents it sued them over. The latter two companies fended off three wireless base station claims, while Sony and HTC defended a fourth involving handset technology. HTC said it believed that WiLan "exaggerated the scope of its patent" to extract royalties, while a spokesman for Alcatal-Lucent said it believed the company "was stretching the boundaries of its patents" -- all of which were invalidated by the court. Kauft Apple die 3D-Sensor-Firma hinter Microsofts Kinect?
Laut dem israelischen «Calcalist» soll es aktuell Übernahmegespräche zwischen PrimeSense und Apple geben. Für 280 bis 300 Millionen US-Dollar soll die israelische Firma von Apple aufgekauft werden. Laut dem Bericht sollen Ingenieure von PrimeSense in den letzten Tagen Apples Entwicklungseinrichtungen besucht haben.
PrimeSense wurde 2005 gegründet und stellt 3D-Körper-Sensoren her. Die Spekulationen über die Übernahme heizen nun erneut auch die Gerüchte rund um einen Apple-Fernseher an. Mit der Sensor-Technologie kann man Produkte durch Bewegungen und Hand-Gesten steuern. Microsoft benutzte die Sensoren-Technologie von PrimeSense für die erste Kinect-Generation («Project Natal»). Mittlerweile wurde diese Technologie durch eine Eigenentwicklung ersetzt. Apple forscht ebenfalls bereits seit längerem mit solchen Technologien. Early iPhone 5S Shipments May Be Constrained Due to Poor Fingerprint Sensor Yields
In what has become something of a tradition ahead of Apple's product launches, Digitimes is reporting that the iPhone 5S may see constrained supplies at launch due to poor yields of certain components. In this case, the issues are said to be related to chips supporting fingerprint recognition and the device's LCD, according to industry sources.The fingerprint recognition chip is designed by AuthenTec, of which Apple acquired for US$356 million in July 2012. Googles Eric Schmidt: Beziehung mit Apple verbessert sich
Eric Schmidt äusserte sich anlässlich der Sun-Valley-Konferenz zur Beziehung zwischen Apple und Google. Der Verwaltungsratspräsident von Google ist der Meinung, dass sich die Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Unternehmen im letzten Jahr verbessert haben. Der Hauptgrund für diese verbesserten Beziehungen sollen die vielen Gespräche gewesen sein, welche zwischen den beiden Unternehmen stattgefunden haben sollen. Zum genauen Inhalt der Gespräche wollte sich Eric Schmidt jedoch nicht äussern. Er deutete lediglich an, dass zwischen Apple und Google eine lange Liste von Punkten diskutiert werden müssen, welche in einer längerfristigen Geschäftsbeziehung auftauchen. Auf der Seite von Google werden diese Gespräche meistens vom «Chief Business Officer» Nickesh Arora geleitet. BBC promises five new HD channels by early 2014, including News, Beebies and BBC Four
Not that they weren't pretty excellent already, but some major BBC channels are due to get a 1080p makeover by early next year. UK viewers will get five new channels in total, with no need for any subscriptions (courtesy of FreeView HD, YouView and FreeSat), including BBC News HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, CBeebies HD and CBBC HD (so long as Mr Tumble can upgrade his make-up). DigiTimes: Produktionsprobleme bei der nächsten iPhone-Generation?
Das taiwanesische Portal «DigiTimes» will wieder einmal Neuigkeiten aus den Zulieferbetrieben von Apple erfahren haben. Gemäss diesen Informationen könne Apple in diesem Quartal weniger iPhones der nächsten Generation ausliefern als ursprünglich geplant.
Angeblich gibt es zwei Gründe für die Lieferverzögerung. Zum einen soll die Massenproduktion der Fingerabdruck-Sensoren, welche für das kommende iPhone erwartet werden, noch nicht gestartet haben. Ursprünglich sollten die Zulieferer Ende Juni in der Lage sein, mit der Massenproduktion der Chips zu beginnen. Aufgrund einer geringeren Ausbeute bei der Herstellung der Sensoren verzögert sich der Start der Massenproduktion bis Ende Juli. A look at the "flawed" antitrust decision against Apple
US District Judge Denise Cote last week ruled that Apple colluded with book publishers to artificially raise the price of e-books across the industry.
In the wake of that decision, the Macs Future website took a thorough look at Cote's ruling and points out a number of reasons why the reasoning upon which the decision lies is flawed.

Sony Video Unlimited adds persistent library, grants cross-device access
Using Sony's Video Unlimited platform just got a little more appealing. Developers realize iOS 7 means they'll have to update, or lose customers
There's a great short post on the Tapadoo site called "iOS 7. Move now, or be an insta-delete." As a dev shop with outside clients, they see more clearly than most that iOS 7 is a seismic shift for Apple's mobile platform. This will be more emphatic than the rapid turnover we saw with apps being updated for the iPhone 5 screen's new aspect ratio; apps that don't get refreshed for iOS 7 will seem antiquated to a majority of Apple's mobile customers come this fall.

A concrete iPhone case, because why not?
Sure. You'd be forgiven for thinking that once we had iPhone cases that double as a weapon we'd have reached our logical limit. We're done! Pack it up boys. All the iPhone cases have been designed. That's what we thought. And then we caught a look at Posh-Projects brand new "Luna" iPhone case, a beautiful piece of pop art that gives your phone the appearance of the moon's surface.

Word Lens developer uses quadcopter to deliver wedding ring
Word Lens developer Otavio Good recently tied the knot with his wife at a wedding ceremony in Redwood City. But being a techie and developer, he decided to have tech play a role at his wedding. Standing in front of a lawn full of guests, Good shrugged when the marriage official asked for the ring; it seemed he had forgotten it. Then seconds later an iPhone-controlled quadcopter swooped in and delivered the ring to Good in front of some very amused guests.

Upcoming 'VZ Edge' Program May Allow No Contracts and Earlier Upgrades for Verizon Users [iOS Blog]
Following T-Mobile's recent announcement of its new "Jump" phone upgrade program and its "Uncarrier" policies, a leaked document (via Droid Life) suggests that Verizon intends to introduce a similar "VZ Edge" program that will allow Verizon customers to purchase phones on a monthly payment plan that will include upgrade capabilities after half of the device purchase price has been paid. Though details on the upcoming changes are scarce, the document implies that VZ Edge will function similarly to T-Mobile's Uncarrier program, letting customers purchase unsubsidized, off-contract phones

Transport Tycoon coming to iOS
All aboard! Chris Sawyer, purveyor of simulation games like Transport Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon, is bringing Transport Tycoon to iOS in 2013. The announcement was made via the YouTube video below.
Though there's currently no official release date for the upcoming title, users interested in creating their own transportation empire can sign up on the Transport Tycoon website to receive an email notification when it becomes available.

Apple allegedly working with Samsung on chips again
Apple and Samsung have had a complicated relationship dating back to 2007 when Samsung became the exclusive producer of chips for Apple's iOS devices. Despite this business connection, the two companies have been attacking each other with a series of lawsuits claiming patent violations of functions on each company's phones.

iPad Mini 2 ohne Retina Display soll im Herbst vorgestellt werden

iPhone 5: 23- jährige Chinesin erlitt tödlichen Stromschlag
Aktuellen Medienberichten zufolge ist eine 23-jährige Chinesin bei der Benutzung des iPhones am 11. Juli ums Leben gekommen.
