Apple-Quartalsbericht Q3/2013: steigender iPhone-Absatz, sinkender Gewinn
Heute Abend nach Börsenschluss in New York veröffentlichte Apple den Geschäftsbericht für das dritte Fiskalquartal 2013. In der Zeitspanne zwischen April und Juni 2013 verbuchte Apple Einnahmen in der Höhe von 35.3 Milliarden US-Dollar (plus 0.86 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr). Der Gewinn sank hingegen auf 6.9 Milliarden US-Dollar (7.47 US-Dollar pro Aktie, minus 19.85 Prozent). Apple verkaufte im dritten Fiskalquartal 3.75 Millionen Mac-Computer (minus 6.62 Prozent), 14.62 Millionen iPads (minus 14.23 Prozent), 31.2 Millionen iPhones (plus 20.03 Prozent) und 4.57 Millionen iPods (minus 32.32 Prozent). Die Bruttogewinnspanne sank von 42.8 Prozent im Vorjahr auf 36.9 Prozent im letzen Quartal. Die internationalen Verkäufe trugen 57 Prozent zum gesamten Umsatz bei.
Mit iTunes setzte Apple 3.990 Milliarden US-Dollar um (plus 25 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr).

Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer: Apple to Have 'Very Busy Fall' with More Detail Coming in October
During the Question and Answer portion of Apple's third quarter earnings call, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer suggested that Apple will have a "very busy fall," specifically mentioning October as a month when the company might release new products. Apple hat 31,2 Millionen iPhone im Q3 2013 verkauft
Bei der Bekanntgabe der Quartalszahlen hat Apple den Verkauf von 31,2 Millionen iPhone bestätigt. Damit übertraf man den Wert aus dem Vorjahr deutlich. Dafür wurden im Vergleich zu 2012 weniger iPads und Macs verkauft. Der Netto-Gewinn für das dritte Quartal 2013 wird von Apple mit 6,9 Milliarden US-Dollar taxiert, bei einem Umsatz von 35,3 Milliarden USD. Apple announces Q3 2013 financial results
Today, Apple announced its quarterly earnings for Q3 2013. In this latest quarter, Apple recorded revenue of $35.3 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.9 billion. International sales accounted for more than half (57 percent) of the quarter's revenue.
In all, Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones, up 20% year over year. The company also sold 14.6 million iPads and 3.8 million Macs in the quarter. These two numbers are down from the same quarter last year when Apple sold 17 million iPads and 4 million Macs.

Apple today announced financial results for the second calendar and third fiscal quarter of 2013. For the quarter, Apple posted revenue of $35.3 billion and net quarterly profit of $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per diluted share, compared to revenue of $35 billion and net quarterly profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per diluted share in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin for the quarter was 36.9 percent compared to 42.8 percent in the year-ago quarter, with international sales accounting for 57 percent of revenue. It's hasn't been a particularly quiet quarter for Apple, at least in the announcement department. But, as far actually shipping new products, Q3 of 2013 has been a relatively uneventful. Perhaps that's why the company's revenues are down to $35.3 billion, from $43.6 billion in Q2.

Chainsaw Warrior coming to Mac, iOS this year
Originally published by Games Workshop and designed by Stephen Hand, Chainsaw Warrior was released as a one-player action/adventure board game back in 1987.

Post Haste for OS X creates project template folders
A rather curious app crossed my desk this morning. Aimed at creatives who make complex project folders repeatedly, Post Haste (free) enables you to create named directory hierarchies over and over again. You supply the project name and client name, and Post Haste builds your folders and skeleton files.
The idea is this. Many workflows include setting up folder groups. For example, if you spend time in Photoshop, you want to create a primary document, set up folders for raw source images, establish a set of reference images, and so forth. Roundup of Analyst Expectations Ahead of Q3 2013 Earnings Call
Philip Elmer-Dewitt has assembled his quarterly list of analyst predictions ahead of Apple's earnings report this afternoon. The list includes estimates from 59 analysts: 21 "independent" and 38 "institutional" who work for large investment houses or research organizations. Apple's stock price remains down significantly from its highs of last year, and investors are concerned about Apple's growth prospects across both existing and potential new product lines. As far as hardware goes, Apple only introduced new MacBook Air models during the past quarter, and only in the final month. The company is not expected to introduce new iPhone models -- its financial bread and butter -- before the last month of Q4.

Verizon debuts the Droid Maxx, the successor to the RAZR Maxx HD
Fans of Kevlar and long battery life will be happy to hear that Verizon unveiled its latest Maxx, the Droid Maxx, this morning in New York City, and it sports a massive 48-hour battery life. It's apparently 9 percent thinner than last year's counterpart, the RAZR Maxx HD, and it starts at $299 (with the standard two-year contract, naturally) on August 20th. Specifics about CPU and GPU weren't given, though the latest Maxx is reportedly 24 percent faster in the CPU department and 100 percent faster in terms of graphics processing. It also features a 7-megapixel camera out back.

Like clockwork, Motorola and Verizon have refreshed their joint Droid lineup, and we're here to check out all three devices. The two premium handsets, the Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx, are the most promising of the bunch for advanced users, replacing last year's Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD. Motorola Droid Mini for Verizon eyes-on
Gigantic handsets may be surprisingly popular, but they're hardly appropriate for every smartphone user. Some of us prefer working with a more compact device, and for those customers, Motorola and Verizon have announced the new Droid Mini. The handset, a smaller variant of the Droid Ultra (and Ultra MAXX), stills packs plenty of punch.
For all intents and purposes, the Mini is a refresh of last year's Droid Razr M. Like that device, the Mini sports an attractive Kevlar vest.

Ember makes web clipping, digital scrapbooking a breeze
What's not to like about an app that can grab a web page and let you save, organize and mark it up, then share it in more than a half dozen ways? Ember is a powerful but simple application for saving and sharing web pages, images or just about anything you can see online. There's a lot to love in this focused app from Realmac Software.
Once upon a time Realmac made an application called LittleSnapper, designed to grab web pages and the like and store them in a digital scrapbook of sorts. The app had some problems, and I never really quit using Skitch for marking up images and pages. SF's district attorney: iOS 7's Activation Lock offers "clear improvements" in anti-theft tech
Smartphone thefts have been on the rise over the last several years, particularly in big cities such as New York, London, and San Francisco. Last week San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón and New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced that they were going to test new anti-theft smart phone measures unveiled by Apple at WWDC.

Best Buy again offering $200+ for iPad trade-ins
Earlier this month, Best Buy offered iPad owners US$200 towards the purchase of a new iPad with Retina display if owners traded in their old iPad 2's or third-generation iPads. That program will resume today and run until August 3, according to 9to5Mac.
To be eligible, owners of iPad 2s or third-generation iPads must have the device and it must be free of water damage or cracked screens. Owners will get a minimum of a $200 Best Buy gift card for their old device to put towards the purchase of a fourth generation iPad.

Swisscom-CEO Carsten Schloter ist tot
Die Swisscom trauert um ihren CEO Carsten Schloter. Der 49-jährige deutsche Staatsbürger wurde heute morgen an seinem Wohnort im Kanton Fribourg tot aufgefunden.
Die genaueren Umstände des Todes werden abgeklärt. Die Polizei geht laut der Mitteilug der Swisscom von einem Suizid aus. Mit Rücksicht auf die Familie werden keine weiteren Angaben gemacht.
Der Verwaltungsrat, die Geschäftsleitung und die Mitarbeitenden «sind zutiefst betroffen und sprechen der Familie und den Angehörigen ihr Beileid aus», so der Präsident des Verwaltungsrates, Hansueli Loosli, in einer Mitteilung der Swisscom.

Das iPhone-Lite in Plastik und das iPad 5 sollen laut Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo von KGI Securities Anfang September verkauft werden. Das iPhone 5S soll hingegen erst Ende September in den Handel kommen. Das iPhone 5S wird wegen Kapazitätsengpässen erst Ende September ausgeliefert werden, behauptet Ming-Chi Kuo. Diverse Komponenten des neuen Smartphones und auch Probleme in den Produktionsfabriken sollen, wie beim iPhone 5, zu Lieferschwierigkeiten in den ersten Wochen und Monaten führen. Disney Research an der ETH: 3D aus jedem Foto
Forscher der ETH Zürich haben einen Technologie entwickelt, welche die Herstellung von 3D-Landschaften revolutionieren könnte. Ein neu entwickelter Algorithmus ermöglicht es dem Anwender, ein klassisches 2D-Foto in eine 3D-Landschaft zu transformieren. Gemäss den Angaben der Forscher können so Aufnahmen von Landschaften in eine Umgebung, wie man sie beispielsweise aus Video-Spielen kennt, transformiert werden.
Die von den Forschern entwickelte Technologie analysiert Licht- und Schatten-Muster auf dem Bild und misst so die Tiefe der Objekte. Wenn man verschiedene Bilder aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zur Verfügung hat, kann das Programm auch eine virtuelle Landschaft erstellen.
Der wohl erstaunlichste Umstand ist die Tatsache, nach welcher die von den Forschern entwickelte Technologie keine Hochleistungs-Computer erfordert. Apple feiert eine Milliarde Podcast-Abonnenten
Apple hat am Montag den ersten grossen Meilenstein bei den in iTunes integrierten Podcasts vermelden können. Gemäss den Angaben von Apple gibt es nun mehr als eine Milliarde Podcast-Abonnements. Die Podcast-Macher haben in den letzten Jahren über 250’000 unterschiedliche Podcasts mit rund 8 Millionen Folgen produziert. Das Podcast-Angebot ist momentan in über 100 Sprachen verfügbar.
Um diesen Meilenstein gebührend feiern zu können, hat Apple eine nspeziellen iTunes-Bereich aufgeschaltet, in welchem einige der beliebtesten Podcasts sowie eine Auswahl spannender Neuerscheinungen zusammengestellt worden sind. Apple hat es bedauernswerterweise verpasst, Schweizer Podcasts speziell auszuzeichnen. Remember when Amazon lifted the requirement for a minimum spend before you qualified for free delivery? Well, from July 23rd, customers in the UK will be required to spend a minimum of £10 ($15) before they're entitled to the service -- but there are a few exceptions. Purchases of DVDs, Books, Blu-Ray discs, CDs, video games and software won't require a minimum spend, and the company specifically suggests you pick up a paperback alongside a new HDMI cable to get around the rule.

Ein System mit zwei Sensoren zur Korrektur und Erkennung von diversen Foto-Fehlern soll helfen, die Bild-Qualität in Apple-Geräten mit Kamera zu verbessern. Fotos in Warteschleife für iPhone-Anrufer?
Ein neues Patent deutet an, dass iPhone-Nutzer vielleicht demnächst Fotos an Anrufer schicken können, die in der Leitung warten. Während man einen Anrufer am iPhone in die Warteschleife legt, sucht man einige Fotos aus, die man mit der Person teilen möchte. In der Folge kann man sie dem Anrufer zuschicken. Für das Frühlings-Quartal, welches von April bis Juni dauerte, erwarten viele Analysten kein Wachstum gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal. Moto X Leak des Tages: Kamera-UI mit Swipe-Bedienung und Zeitlupe

Und wieder sind Details zum Moto X herausgekommen, diesmal haben Android Police das User Interface der Kamera aufgetan. Das unterscheidet sich deutlich von dem vorheriger Motorola Phones, aber auch von Android 4.2 bzw von dem, was es von Android 4.3 schon zu sehen gab. Es wird viel geswipt und gestikuliert: an die Einstellungen kommt mit mit Swipe nach rechts, die Galerie erscheint mit Swipe nach links. Zweimal kurz das Handgelenk schütteln startet die Kamera-App, bei gehaltenem Tap wird der Burst-Modus gestartet. Für 3,7 Milliarden Euro hat sich Telefonica Deutschland / O2 den Konkurrenten E-Plus gesichert, wobei der Kauf noch nicht abgeschlossen ist, denn Aktionäre und Kartellbehörden müssen noch zustimmen. Falls er über die Bühne gehen sollte (was Mitte 2014 der Fall sein soll) entstünde ein neuer Konzern mit 43 Millionen Mobilfunkkunden, laut Bundesnetzagentur wohl der größte Mobilfunkkonzern Deutschlands, denn die Telekom liegt aktuell mit 36,6 Millionen Kunden vorn, gefolgt von Vodafone mit 33,9 Millionen. Apple verteilt vierte Beta von OS X Mavericks
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine vierte Vorabversion vom kommenden OS X 10.9 Mavericks an registrierte Entwickler verteilt (Build: 13A524d). Mit der heutigen Veröffentlichung der vierten Vorabversion hält Apple den Zweiwochen-Rhythmus bei der Veröffentlichung neuer Beta-Versionen ein.
Aufgrund eines Angriffs auf das Developer-Center können erst Nutzer vorhergehender Vorabversionen das Update über den Mac App Store installieren. Apple hat aufgrund des Angriffes am letzten Donnerstag das Developer-Center vom Netz genommen und einem Komplett-Umbau unterzogen. Wann Entwickler wieder auf das Dev-Center zugreifen können, ist noch nicht bekannt.

iOS 7 «Activation Lock» erfüllt Erwartungen der Staatsanwälte

Best Buy to Reinstate iPad Trade-In Program [iOS Blog]
Earlier this month Best Buy announced a special two-day iPad trade-in program where 2nd or 3rd generation iPad owners could trade in their devices for fourth-generation iPads. Best Buy is now set to relaunch the program tomorrow, according to 9to5Mac. The program is largely the same, with 2nd and 3rd generation iPad owners getting gift cards starting at $200 toward a fourth generation iPad when they trade in their devices. Over one billion podcast subscriptions through the iTunes Store
Are you addicted to podcasts? If so, you're not alone; both bite-sized and long form talk shows on iTunes have absolutely blown up since they were introduced on the service in 2005. Just how big have they gotten? Today Apple announced that the service has passed 1 billion podcast subscriptions.
To celebrate the occasion Apple is holding a special promotion in the podcast section of iTunes highlighting some of the most popular shows ever to appear on the service. In the top slot of the new promotional page - under the "Classics" section, of course - is NPR's beloved "This American Life." No surprise there.

A road trip with Ohai for iPhone
Those who know me understand that I love traveling. I spent the last four days in Phoenixville, Pa. with my sister, her husband and my two kids. It was purely for fun and an excellent time to test Ohai (US$4.99), a travel journal app for iPhone.
Ohai lets your record places you visit, complete with geographic location, a photo and your own notes. The app resembles a journal with one day per "page." It's fun to re-live your excursions, flipping through the pages to see where you've been. Ohai does have some big limitations, however, which I'll discuss below. First, the good.

AT&T announces new Mobile Share plans
AT&T have announced an expansion of their pre-paid Mobile Share plans, offering relatively low-cost plans coupled with incredibly low data allotments. For US$20 a month you can get a whopping 300 MB of data each month, while $50 gets you 2 GB. Both plans include unlimited talk and texts.
Mobile Share plans create a bucket of data that can be shared among a number of different phones on one account. Account holders pay for the cost of their data along with a monthly charge for each phone activated on the account. Your price per phone goes down as you add more phones to your plan. So that $20 a month plan that looks like a crazy good deal is actually a $20 a month plus another $50 a month per smartphone.

Apple Reaches Podcasting Milestone with 1 Billion Subscribers
According the Podcasts section of the iTunes Store, iTunes users have now subscribed to one billion podcasts. Originally introduced in 2005, Podcasts allow both individuals and major companies to broadcast episodic radio-style shows. Apple offers thousands of different Podcasts that are available via iTunes or its Podcasts iOS app [App Store]. In honor of the one billion milestone, Apple has highlighted a number of its most popular podcasts over the years in a new iTunes section which offers up a number of classic Podcasts alongside New and Noteworthy content.

Samsung's 55-inch curved OLED TV set to land in the US this week for $15k

Survey Shows Older and Cheaper iPhones and iPads Remain Popular, MacBook Pro is Best-Selling Mac
In its latest report on Apple, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) surveyed a number of recent purchasers of Apple products to determine U.S. buyer's purchasing habits regarding preferred capacity and model of a variety of Apple products. Among other things, the survey found that the iPhone 5 accounted for just 52% of iPhones purchased in June 2013 -- back in October, just after the iPhone 5 had launched, the new device commanded some 68% of iPhone purchases. In June, 30% of iPhone sales were from the 4S, while 18% were from the 4. The iPhone 4 and 4S aren't the only older iOS devices to be seeing significant sales success. Congress is a great app to help you keep an eye on your Senate and House representatives
Congress (free) for iPhone is a handy way to keep track of what is going on in Washington in the Senate and the House. The free app comes from the Sunlight Foundation and is non-partisan.
When you first run it you will get news from both the Senate and House, but then you can drill down by state and to a particular member of Congress. You can find new proposed legislation, or track the status of any bill. You can see the latest votes from your legislator, and what bills they are sponsoring.
