It was a wild few week at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo. Just think -- nearly a decade after the last generation of consoles was unveiled by Microsoft and Sony, we've gotten our first close-up look at the next generation. After Apple debuted iOS 7 on Monday, the website for the new operating system displayed a set of icons that were different from the icons found in the current version of iOS 7. AT&T adds LTE, new plans to GoPhone prepaid plans
Starting June 21st, AT&T is officially adding LTE 4G support and a new set of plans to its GoPhone prepaid network. The base tier costs $25 per month, and includes unlimited texting and 250 voice minutes, but no data unless a person pays an extra $5 for 50MB. With a $40 plan people can upgrade to 500 minutes and 200MB of data, expandable to 300MB for $5.

AT&T GoPhone plans to support LTE, drop most data add-ons on June 21st
AT&T hinted that it was shaking up its GoPhone plans later this month, and it's making good on its word. As of June 21st, customers using the prepaid service will have access to the same LTE service as their subscription peers; AT&T will mark the occasion by selling the Samsung Galaxy Express to GoPhone users at $250 off-contract. Dev says it worked with new Mac Pro in Apple 'Evil Lab' prior to WWDC
Software developer The Foundry had test access to the new Mac Pro well prior to the computer's reveal at WWDC, the company tells AppleInsider. An eight-week-old Mac port of The Foundry's MARI 3D rendering tool was demonstrated at WWDC earlier this week. The developer says, though, that Apple earlier allowed it to work with the new Mac Pro in Apple's Cupertino headquarters, in a room known as the "Evil Lab."

Right now find big savings on refurbished iMacs at Apple's online store. The refurbished 27-inch iMac with a 3.2GHz Intel quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive has been reduced by $300 to $1,699. At the bottom of the price scale is the 21.5-inch iMac with a 2.7GHz Intel quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, it was $1,299, but is now only $1,099.

Apple opens iWork for iCloud beta to registered developers
One part of Monday's WWDC 2013 keynote that seems to have received short shrift in the discussions of updated products is iWork. During the keynote, iWork for iCloud -- a browser-based version of Apple's office suite -- was discussed along with comments about the iOS versions of the suite. Now Apple has followed up the announcement by opening a beta of iWork for iCloud to registered developers.
While the browser-based iWork for iCloud is meant to work on Mac or PC in just about any browser, developers opening the beta web apps in Chrome are greeted with a message saying "Your browser isn't fully supported. For the best Pages/Keynote/Numbers for iCloud experience, use the latest version of Safari."

White House mandates that federal agencies make better use of spectrum
The White House has long been calling for smarter use of spectrum among federal institutions, and it's translating some of those words into deeds through a new Presidential Memorandum. Clear Timer for iPhone looks great, works well
Clear Timer for iPhone (Free, optional upgrades available via in-app purchase) is interesting in light of iOS 7. It's a timer app with charming looks. There are big, chunky switches to toggle on and off and a click-y dial to spin. Several great-looking themes like the irresistible steam punk and sleek "Vader" add to the fun. But as the iOS goes (ugh, slap me for using this word), more "minimal," I wonder if developers will stop using skeuomorphic elements like these.

New Windows Tablet Ad Again Uses Siri's Voice to Poke Fun at iPad
Microsoft has posted a new television ad on YouTube for the Dell XPS 10 Tablet running Windows RT. Twitter announced last week it was redesigning TweetDeck and giving it a fresh look and feel. Today, those changes hit the OS X version of the social networking app.
The latest version of TweetDeck has a powerful, new sidebar that gives you quick access to items like your columns, your lists and the settings. You can also create a new tweet and search from this sidebar.
Search is more powerful, too, with the ability to filter column search results by the minimum number of retweets, favorites, and replies. A similar filtering feature is available for interactions, letting you filter them for mentions, retweets, favorites, followers or lists.

New Microsoft ad uses Siri to take more shots against the iPad
Microsoft may have released an iPhone optimized version of Office Mobile today, but that doesn't mean the folks over at Redmond are all aboard the iOS bandwagon completely.
In an ad released yesterday, Microsoft takes some more shots at the iPad by poking fun at the iPad's lack of a zoom-able homescreen, its lack of SD card support, it's "high" pricepoint, and its lack of multitasking. Pegatron seen shipping low-cost iPhone, second-gen iPad mini in Aug.
Pegatron has won a contract to assemble a low-cost iPhone with a plastic back, as well as the second-generation iPad mini, and will start shipping both to Apple in August, say supply chain sources in Taiwan. Parts for both products are expected to emerge from suppliers in July. One company, Casetek, has been identified as a chassis supplier, but for which product(s) is unmentioned.

FX Photo Studio for iPhone reaches 10 million downloads; special deal for Mac version
We're used to hearing about the huge numbers of downloads that are produced by the App Store, but it's rare when TUAW gets news about a specific app. MacPhun, the company that develops FX Photo Studio and a host of other iOS and Mac apps, recently decided to make FX Photo Studio for iPhone a free download after selling the app for US$1.99 for four years. The goal? To see if they could reach 10,000,000 downloads of the app. They were able to do so in 45 days, an incredible feat for any app but surprising for an app that has been around since May of 2009.

European Commission votes to end roaming charges in 2014
The European Commission (EC) has voted to scrap mobile charges caused through roaming in 2014. Yahoo! has been on a tear lately revamping its mobile apps. The latest is Yahoo! Sports 4.0 for iOS (formerly known as "Sportacular"). TweetDeck for Mac gets new look, columns sidebar
Twitter has posted an updated Mac version of TweetDeck, its more advanced client software. The v3.0.2 release makes a number of interface changes, most notably adding a sidebar to the lefthand side. Apple Adding Roughly 500,000 New iTunes Accounts A Day [iOS Blog]
During Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, CEO Tim Cook announced that the iTunes and App Store have 575 million store accounts and noted that Apple believes it has more accounts with credit cards than any other company on the Internet. Half a million iTunes accounts are created each day
Asymco's Horace Dediu points out that, on average, over half a million iTunes accounts are being created each day. At WWDC this week, Tim Cook announced iTunes has 575 million accounts. Horace Dediu took that figure and calculated it with previous iTunes membership milestones to find the average number of new iTunes accounts created daily.
If Dediu's trend continues, iTunes will add another 100 million account holders this year. If it holds for three years, iTunes will have more account holders than Facebook by 2017. That is, of course, only if Facebook doesn't continue to add accounts, which it probably will. These numbers still demonstrate just how large iTunes

iOS 7 Icon-Design noch nicht endgültig

During Apple's e-book price fixing case on Thursday, Apple executive Eddy Cue testified that Steve Jobs initially wasn't interested in getting into the e-book market at all. Kein Ausschneiden oder Ausdrucken mehr: Mit der Einführung von «digitalen Bons» können Coop-Kunden künftig über das Internet oder via App Coop Bons aktivieren und auf die eigene Supercard speichern. Beim nächsten Einkauf werden die aktivierten Bons beim Vorweisen der Supercard automatisch eingelöst. Dadurch entfällt das Ausdrucken oder das Ausschneiden der Coupons.

Apple hat einen Baum-Chef für den Campus 2
Auf dem Gelände des neuen Apple Campus 2 in Cupertino sollen dereinst 7’000 Bäume stehen. Heute stehen bereits 4’500 Bäume auf dem Gelände, welche allerdings zur Mehrheit abgerissen werden sollen. Bis zum Ende der Bauzeit will Apple als Ersatz 6’000 neue Bäume pflanzen. Dabei sollen neue Bäume, aber auch ein Teil der alten Bäume verpflanzt werden. Neben Eichen (Savannah und Woodland) will Apple gemäss den Plänen auch Apfel-, Pflaumen-, Aprikosen-, Kirschen- und Persimonen-Bäume anpflanzen.
Um dieses ambitionierte Projekt zu stemmen, hat Apple einen «Senior Arborist», einen Baum-Chef, angestellt. Gerücht: Samsung liefert Retina Display für kommendes iPad mini
Obwohl sich Apple und Samsung seit Jahren gegenseitig bestreiten, könnte Samsung wieder eine wichtigere Rolle als Apple-Zulieferer übernehmen. Gerüchten aus der koreanischen IT-Industrie zufolge soll Samsung das Display für die nächste Generation des iPad mini liefern. Wie bereits mehrfach berichtet handelt es sich dabei wahrscheinlich um ein Retina Display mit einer Auflösung von 2’048 mal 1’536 Pixel. Im Gegensatz zum iPad 4 wäre demzufolge dieselbe Anzahl Pixel auf engerem Raum platziert. Die Pixeldichte wäre somit ähnlich hoch wie beim iPhone 5.

Asymco: iTunes adding 500,000 new accounts per day
A new chart by Horace Dediu at Asymco shows that, based on Apple's public pronouncements on iTunes accountholder growth, the company is adding approximately 500,000 new accounts each and every day. Apple CEO Tim Cook, during the WWDC keynote on Monday, said that Apple now had a total of 575 million iTunes account holders, most of whom have a credit card attached to the account. Given that rate of growth, Apple should expect to top 600 million well before the end of the year, and could see one billion account holders by mid-2015.

WSJ: T-Mobile, VZW don't directly share call data to NSA, but that might not matter
Providing another wrinkle to the recently exploding privacy debate, a Wall Street Journal report indicates which wireless companies are providing call information to the government. According to the infamous people familiar with the matter, foreign ownership of Verizon and T-Mobile presents several obstacles including them in the program. Chief among them is that the requests are top secret and might prohibit some of the owners from being aware.
Meanwhile, Sprint and AT&T are said to have "long cooperated with the government," although it may not really matter which provider you're using when it comes to popping up in NSA-requested files.

ITC throws out Google objections; Samsung ban now very likely
One of the numerous International Trade Commission (ITC) complaints Samsung and Apple have hurled at each other is now expected to result in a sales ban on some Samsung products, due to a finding by the ITC staff that grounds for objections on a sales ban are themselves baseless. BMI takes issue with Pandora station buy, files music licensing suit
Just over 24 hours after Pandora announced that it had acquired a terrestrial FM radio station to attempt to pay less in music licensing fees, BMI filed suit in New York accusing Pandora of duplicity as it wrangles new music licenses. The music industry company suit is asking the court to order "reasonable, market-driven fees for Pandora" calling the purchase of the radio station a "stunt."

Eddy Cue takes the stand in e-book price fixing case
Apple executive Eddy Cue didn't get a chance to enjoy WWDC in its entirety because earlier today he was in New York City testifying about Apple's dealings with book publishers amid allegations that Apple colluded with publishers to artificially raise the price of e-books across the industry.
While on the stand, Cue didn't deny that the price of e-books had risen in the wake of Apple getting into the e-book market. He did however clarify that the rise in e-books pricing wasn't the result of backhanded and behind-the-scenes maneuvering from Apple, but rather the result of publishers on the whole being unsatisfied with their current contracts with Amazon.

Symantec reorganization speeds up, nearly 1800 jobs lost
According to sources familiar with the matter, computing security firm Symantec is in the process of laying off as many as 1,700 employees, starting today. The cuts, announced in January, are part of new CEO Steve Bennett's plan to resuscitate the fallen finances of the company. The losses reflect about eight percent of the company's 21,500 positions worldwide.

Samsung CEO says "patent disputes with Apple will continue"
While Apple was able to settle its past patent disputes with both Nokia and HTC, its ongoing legal battles against Samsung show no signs of slowing down.
According to the Korea Times, Samsung CEO Shin Jong-kyun recently spoke to reporters and indicated that an all encompassing settlement agreement with Apple isn't on the horizon.
The CEO confirmed Samsung has no intention of ending the patent disputes with Apple.
"Patent disputes against Apple will continue," Shin said.
The paper notes that Jong-kyun's remarks are the first he's made about Apple since the ITC in early June ordered an import ban against

Report: European Commission to investigate Android licensing
Having just reached a legally-binding settlement with the European Commission in an anti-trust investigation over its deceptive use of paid ads appearing as search results indistinguishable from independent results and its anti-competitive blocking of other services on sites that use AdSense, the company now faces a new investigation over its Android licensing deals.
