Apple Seeds OS X 10.8.5 Build 12F26 to Developers [Mac Blog]
Apple today seeded build 12F26 of OS X 10.8.5 to developers, marking the sixth beta iteration of 10.8.5. The release comes exactly one week after the previous OS X 10.8.5 beta, build 12F23. As with previous betas, the update contains no known issues and can be downloaded via Apple's Developer page or through the software update tool of the Mac App Store. AeroSee uses drones for mountain rescue, wants you to join the search
The woods may be lovely, dark and deep, but they're also dangerously unpredictable. That's why the University of Central Lancashire is looking to improve search and rescue technology with AeroSee, a project that incorporates drones to locate missing hikers. Nike+Running update for iOS introduces Nike+Challenges
Nike today rolled out an interesting update to its Nike+ Running app for iOS. The app update introduces social challenges into the mix, enabling runners to invite friends to run and compete in an old fashioned race.
Dubbed Nike+Challenges, the feature also lets runners communicate with each other mid-race via group chats. This is a great way for racing runners to talk a little trash or deliver words of encouragement and inspiration.
Naturally, the feature monitors everyone's progress and encourages friendly competition through leaderboards and medals. Users can put together one-off races or see who can hit 100 miles the quickest.

Google adds push notifications to Calendar API
Google just made the lives of third-party calendar developers much easier. Rather than having to constantly poll Google Calendar servers for updates, the Calendar API now supports push notifications. Facebook reports $1.81 billion in revenue for Q2 2013
Facebook saw its revenue grow year-over-year in its Q1 earnings reported in May, and that trend has continued for its second quarter. According to CNBC, the company has pulled in $1.81 billion in revenue for Q2, beating analysts' expectations.

Sprint's LTE rollout in NYC begins
Sprint is finally rolling out LTE service for parts of New York City, including the Bronx and Brooklyn. Sprint says it will flip the switch for those areas on July 30.
Sprint has been way behind AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in rolling out high speed LTE services. There is currently some coverage in Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island, although there has been no official start date announced.
New York City is the most populated city in America, and implementing new cell service is difficult due to interference from tall buildings and finding locations for hardware. Das Nexus 7 war schon letztes Jahr ein schmuckes Tablet, mit dem schnelleren Prozessor und der auf 1080p hochgeschraubten Auflösung des 1920 x 1200 Pixel Displays und dem nochmal dünneren Formfaktor und Android 4.3 hat die Neuasugabe jetzt noch ein paar weitere Pluspunkte gesammelt. Am augenfälligsten ist dabei das HD-Display, das in Videos und mit Fotos eine erstaunliche Detailtreue liefert. Google Takes Aim at Apple with New Nexus 7, Google Play Games and Chromecast
At a press conference today in San Francisco, Google announced its second generation Nexus 7, which comes with a number of enhancements. The tablet, which is thinner and lighter than the previous version, has an improved screen with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 and a pixel density of 323 PPI. It is equipped with a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM, a 9 hour battery life, and it comes with NFC and Bluetooth 4.0. Und das ist das Nexus 7 2013. Gebaut wird es auch dieses Mal von ASUS, die Hauptfeatures betreffen vor allem Verbesserungen des Originals. So wurde zum Beispiel die Auflösung auf 1920 x 1200 Pixel verbessert, was dem neuen Nexus eine Pixeldichte von 323 ppi beschert. Der Screen ist nicht nur kratzfest, sondern soll auch Fingerabdrücke abweisen, wie gut, muß man dann sehen. The Nexus 7 was a rather swell device when it was officially launched last year, and now we've had the opportunity to play with the next-gen version, which bumps the swellness factor a notch or two. Analyzing the iPad's sales cycle
It's long been true that sales of Apple mobile products follow cycles. This started with the iPod, which to this day still displays a spike in sales around the holidays, and has become quite visible with the iPhone, which shows spikes in sales around every product refresh. Freelance analyst Benedict Evans has published a post about the cyclicality of the unit sales figures for all of Apple's mobile products and notes that "the iPad is now starting to become just as cyclical as the iPhone."

After revealing Google's new Nexus 7, Director of Product Management Hugo Barra revealed that alongside its latest iteration of Android, it's teamed up with Netflix to bring higher resolution video streams to compatible devices. Opera says iOS ads do well
In a recent post highlighting the state of mobile advertising during the second quarter of 2013, Opera Mediaworks reports that advertising on iOS is doing rather well.
With respect to ad impressions, both iOS and Android garnered about a 30% share during the quarter gone by. When it comes to monetization, however, iOS reigns supreme.
While mobile ads on Android accounted for 28.08% of mobile ad revenue, the iPhone accounted for 36.44%. When we factor in the iPad and the iPod Touch, the difference becomes even more stark with iOS commanding a 49.36% share of mobile ad revenue.

Russia said to grant NSA leaker Edward Snowden formal entry
According to Russian media, Edward Snowden has just been granted entry into Russia. Though the NSA whistleblower has been offered asylum in Bolivia and Venezuela, he reportedly requested temporary asylum in the Eastern European country last week. While the Putin government didn't approve Snowden's application immediately, it's refused to hand him over to the U.S. since he arrived in Shremetyevo airport from Hong Kong on June 23rd. Janicab.A Malware Targets Computers Running OS X and Windows [Mac Blog]
Researchers from F-Secure, Webroot, and Avast have uncovered Janicab.A, a new trojan that was discovered as a threat to Macs last week and Windows users on Monday, with findings being published recently. For OS X users, Janicab.A was signed with a valid Apple Developer ID and also uses a special unicode character known as a "right-to-left override" (RLO) that is used in email malware attacks. From there, the trojan uses a YouTube page to hijack infected computers, directs them to command-and-control (C&C) servers, and then leaves the server and hides the infection by making the malware appear as a harmless PDF or DOC file.

Caffeinated was a polished Google Reader RSS client with a great layout; but the demise of Google Reader forced developer Curtis Hard to rewrite the core components of the app and liberate it from its Google roots. Now in version 2.0.1, Caffeinated is a very capable standalone RSS reader for OS X.

Sprint has announced a new partnership with Raketu to bring their Wireless CapTel service to iOS devices on the network. The app allows users to read conversations in real time with word-for-word captions that appear on their wireless phone. For people who live with hearing loss the move will open up new options for using mobile phones.
Calls are placed the same way they always are, but when the number is dialed the app connects the device to CapTel's service. Apple Quartalszahlen Q3/2013: iPhone geht gut, iPad-Absatz zurück

Apple hat seine Quartalszahlen für Q3 2013 bekanntgegeben und die sind teilweise etwas anders, als man erwartet hätte: so hat Apple zwar unerwarteterweise fürs iPhone ein neues drittes Rekordquartal hingelegt (31 Millionen verkaufte Stück im Vergleich zu 26 Millionen im Vergleichsquartal letztes Jahr), die Umsätze für Macs sind erwartungsgemäß weiterhin im Sinken (3.800.000 im Vergleich zu 4 Millionen letztes Jahr) und die für iPods ebenso (von 6,8 Millionen auf 4,5 Millionen). Facebook to ask users why they hide News Feed content
Hiding posts on Facebook has been a pretty simple affair, but the firm's gearing up to add a little more nuance. iTravelGo is a US$0.99 app that is limited in cities, but very deep in the information it provides about them. The app has been released today in the App Store.
The 36 cities include U.S. destinations Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Francisco, plus other popular places like Vienna, Madrid, Hong Kong, Rome, Beijing and many more. Apple Awarded Patent That Lets Users Share Content With Others While on Hold
Apple was awarded a U.S. patent on Tuesday that appears to covers a way for iPhone users to share content with each other when phone calls are placed on hold. The patent, number 8,494,123, is for an "on-hold visual menu from a user's communication device" and describes a system that shares a variety of content like pictures, music, videos, upcoming calendar events, and location information to the person that is being put on hold. For example, someone put on hold could look through the other caller's public Photo Stream.

Apple awarded dual-sensor patent, could translate to better mobile photos
Today, Apple was awarded a patent for a dual-sensor imaging system that could find its way into new iterations of the iPhone, iPod, or even Macbook sometime down the road. As AppleInsider reports, the patent, titled "Dual image sensor image processing system and method," details a system consisting of two separate image sensors which capture and then compare two different versions of a photo.
The images are then scrubbed for flaws on a pixel-by-pixel basis. If an unacceptable level of corruption is found in an area of one of the sensor's images, it will be replaced by content captured by the second sensor. The patent notes that this technology would also apply to video capture.

Apple Store iOS app updated
Apple has pushed out a small update to its Apple Store app, which lets users shop Apple's online store comfortably on their iPhone's screen.
There had been rumors that the Apple Store app update was going to see free giveaways via the app in order to entice people to buy more through the app, but as yet no free giveaways have surfaced in the app.
All the release notes say for the latest update is that there are "Various performance enhancements, including improved product search capabilities" that have been added.
Apple Store is a free download.

Apple hat mit OS X Mavericks und iOS 7 auch die Schlüsselbundverwaltung in die iCloud gehoben. Namenhafte Passwort-Apps wie 1Password scheinen damit abgeschrieben, oder etwa doch nicht?

iOS in the Car 'Very Important' to Apple, 'Part of the Ecosystem'
During the question and answer portion of today's third quarter earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked about iOS in the Car, which was a highlight of the company’s keynote presentation at WWDC. Cook said that it was an important "part of the ecosystem," likening it to the App Store, iTunes, messaging, and Siri. "Having something in the automobile is very important," he said. Apple Q3 2013 earnings call by the numbers
