Facebook's iPhone Competitor Rumored to be HTC First, Here's What It Looks Like

Daily iPhone App: Letter Rush puts a new spin on spelling games
Word games are probably my least favorite genre on the App Store at this point -- I think they're overused, and many companies these days are just kicking out half-baked spelling games in the hopes of reaching a large casual audience. But Letter Rush, put together by a former Zynga studio, is different enough that it's worth mentioning: It's a word game that will probably make you better at word games.

Scout sensors, app jump start your home protection
There's a rather nifty crowd-funded project that aims to deliver a "roll-your-own" home security system this August. Using the Selfstarter code available on Github, the Scout Alarm project has so far pulled in almost 800 backers and over $211,000 in funding. The project is designed to "make the latest home security technology affordable for everyone with no required monthly fees."
The hardware starts with a US$80 base station complete with Wi-Fi, a 3G cellular chip, and a backup battery. At each door where homeowners want to be able to arm or disarm the system, there's an arm/disarm panel ($40) that uses RFID reader technology to avoid the need for keypads and codes. Sonnet debuts Echo 15-port Thunderbolt dock with optical
Accessory maker Sonnet Technologies has introduced a catch-all Thunderbolt dock that offers users just about any kind of connection they might want. The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock, compatible with both Mac and Windows machines, offers a total of 15 ports and includes options for an optical DVD or Blu-ray DVD drive as well as a 2TB hard drive (or smaller SSD). Report: T-Mobile iPhone baseband update imminent
Reportedly, T-Mobile is planning on sending carrier updates to unlocked iPhones used on its network on or around April 5. The update should enable LTE and Visual Voicemail to the devices brought to the service. The update will be pushed to iPhones running iOS 6.1 or greater.

York announces pay-as-you-go EV charging network, beats London to the punch
The city of York just announced a plan to install a network of pay-as-you-go charging stations for electric vehicles, the first such system to launch in the UK. York is already home to 12 free charging points, but these are located in lesser-known areas such as private parking lots. The new stations will be installed in public lots in the city center as well as near supermarkets and hotels. According to the City of York Council, the charging technology can add a 30-mile range to a car's battery within a half hour of use. Kobo finally makes its e-readers available through its own site
Strange, but until now, if you were aching for a Kobo reader, the company's site would redirect you to a third-party like Best Buy or select independent booksellers. The tablet / e-reader maker has finally opened up direct sales of devices like the Kobo Glo, Mini and Arc directly through its site to interested parties in Canada and the US. News: Apple sued for EarPods trademark infringement
Apple has been sued for infringing on a trademark with its EarPods headphones. Randolph Divisions, makers of the HearPod digital hearing aid, have filed suit against Apple in Honolulu court. Randolph Divisions registerd the “HearPod” trademark in 2007. Apple’s EarPods with Remote and Mic first shipped in early September of last year. [via The Next Web]

Review: iSkin Aura Folio + Vibes Folio for iPad mini
Inside of the folios, you’ll find a hard plastic shell to hold the iPad mini. I don't know if you have the same problem with the EarPods that Apple ships with the iPhone 5, but I find that a lot of times the friction of the cable on my shirt has a tendency to pull the pods out of my ears. It's annoying, especially when I'm in the middle of a phone call and the right side of the cable -- the one with the mic -- decides to flop down on the front of my shirt. South Korea defense ministry reportedly crafts a cyber policy group to unify its security
If you hadn't heard, South Korea's under a lot of pressure lately, including a spate of internet-based attacks against banks and broadcasters on March 20th that some worry (though can't confirm) was the result of a large-scale hacking campaign. The country won't simply stand idle and brace for another hit, according to the Yonhap News Agency. It understands from an unnamed senior official that South Korea's Ministry of Defense is complementing its Cyber Command division with a policy group, not unlike a UK equivalent,

As much as we love Google Drive, its neither the prettiest nor simplest cloud storage interface. New UI tweaks rolling out to users starting today aren't suddenly going to change that hierarchy too much, but they should add some much needed polish. Hearing-aid company sues Apple over 'EarPod' trademark
A company that makes digital hearing aids with the trademark name "HearPod" is suing Apple over its "EarPods" trademark, claiming infringement. Filed in Hawaii, the "HearPod" trademark was originally issued in 2007, five years before Apple introduced its EarPods headphones. Oddly, Randolph Divisions is suing for infringement rather than claiming any harm from consumer confusion between the two similar-sounding brands. Apple owns the US trademarks for both "EarPods" and "Apple EarPods," but Randolph Divisions owns the "earpods.com" domain name.

WSJ: New iPhone production starting in Q2; low-cost model coming
Apple is starting production of a new iPhone "similar in size and shape to its current one" sometime during the current quarter, according to the Wall Street Journal. The paper cites "people familiar with the device's production," and suggests that the new phone could ship as soon as this summer. Are iTunes Links Being Downranked by Google?
Searching for direct links is a popular way to locate apps, but it appears that Apple's App Store links are being downranked by Google. As TechCrunch points out, a search for "Whatsapp iTunes" or "Whatsapp iPhone" would normally rank the target URL high on the search results page, but that doesn't seem to be the case any longer. Searching for Whatsapp's iTunes link with those aforementioned phrases does not return an iTunes URL on the first page of results, and the same goes for many other popular apps like Facebook and Twitter for iOS. Even Apple's own Keynote and Numbers apps do not show up on the first page of results with search terms like "Keynote iTunes."

T-Mobile to Release Software Update With LTE and Visual Voicemail Support for Unlocked iPhones on April 5
TmoNews reports that T-Mobile USA has issued an internal memo announcing that it will release a new carrier update on April 5 that will add LTE support for unlocked iPhones running on its network. The update will also bring Visual Voicemail and other features to the devices.The T-Mobile Carrier Update is a minor iOS software update that enables official iPhone support by T-Mobile. When installed, the software update enables a handful of capabilities like Visual Voicemail, MMS Settings and Network/Device optimizations that customers do not have access to today. On April 5, the software update will begin being pushed via OTA to all iPhone devices on the T-Mobile network with iOS 6.1.x or higher.

Windows Blue to be called Windows 8.1?
It's a world of code names out there, and final products rarely ever inherit the name given to them during the development process. It appears that Microsoft doesn't plan to buck the trend with the client version of Windows Blue, an OS refresh that Mary Jo Foley says is destined to become Windows 8.1. Microsoft gives out Windows 8, Parallels Desktop to developers
Microsoft is offering Mac developers a special QuickStart kit that includes copies of Windows 8 Pro and Parallels Desktop 8, according to an official blog post by Sandeep Singhal, the company's group program manager for Internet Explorer. AT&T to roll out support for HD Voice later this year
When Apple introduced the iPhone 5, Apple's Senior VP of Marketing Phil Schiller explained that Apple updated the iPhone 5's entire audio system. In addition to the inclusion of 3 microphones and an improved speaker design, Schiller also boasted that the iPhone 5 featured a technology dubbed wideband audio, otherwise known as HD Voice technology.
Phil Schiller said the technology was capable of delivering amazing sound performance and described it thusly:

Firefox 20 for Mac Adds Download Manager and New Private Browsing Features [Mac Blog]
Mozilla has today launched Firefox 20, adding a number of significant improvements to the browser. Users are now able to initiate private browsing without the need to open a new window or close a current browsing session. There is a new function in place that allows users to close a hanging plugin without the need to shut down the entire browser, and the update also includes a new download manager in the Firefox toolbar. The download manager can be accessed by clicking on the down arrow button on the right side of the search bar. It looks like Garmin has managed to lock down a very solid deal following its automotive group's compelling demo at CES. The company's in-dash infotainment solution is now set to roll out with future Mercedes-Benz models -- Garmin's navigation system is scheduled to be fully integrated within the next four years, and will begin appearing with select 2014 models. Apple Brazil cuts price on iPhone 4, iPhone 4S
Brazilian iPhone fans have something to cheer about today. The prices for both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S have been reduced to a much more reasonable level than before, although they're still much more expensive than the carrier-subsidized phones we're used to here in North America.
An 8 GB iPhone 4 used to pull R$1,499 (US$743) out of a Brazilian's cartiera (wallet), and now makes a smaller dent at R$1,099 ($544). If you want a 16 GB iPhone 4S, that's now available for only R$1,699 ($840), a significant discount over the previous price of R$1,999 ($991).

Just a day after Apple promised to "review" its warranty policies and make some minor changes in implementation for the Chinese market, early reaction to the open letter from Apple CEO Tim Cook appears to have neutralized the state-run media attacks on the company. TSMC to build iPhone 6 chips after Samsung contract ends, report says
TSMC will start building A7 chips for the iPhone 6 in 2014, once an Apple contract with Samsung expires, claims Taiwanese publication the Economic Daily News. Samsung has so far been responsible for producing all of Apple's A-series processors, at a facility in Austin, Texas. The two companies have become increasingly hostile towards each other however, and several reports have indicated that TSMC will eventually take over some or all A-series work.

Apple has lowered the prices of unlocked models of the iPhone 4 and 4S in Brazil, reports observe. Netflix's House of Cards comes to Blu-ray in June; second screen feature tweaked on Android
While Netflix is focused on a streaming future the first series to appear exclusively on its service will see a more conventional release this summer. High Def Disc News points out an Amazon listing indicates the House of Cards Season One Blu-ray will arrive June 11th, from Sony Pictures. Über die letzten Tage warfen die chinesischen Staatsmedien in einer Kampagne Apple «Arroganz, Gier und schlechten Service» vor. Nun hat sich Tim Cook über die chinesische Apple-Webseite offiziell zu Wort gemeldet. Die Beschwerden von chinesischen Kunden haben bei Apple ein «tiefes Nachdenken» ausgelöst, wie Tim Cook in der Mitteilung schreibt. Mangelhafte Kommunikation war gemäss dem Apple-CEO dafür verantwortlich, dass der Eindruck eines arroganten Konzerns entstand. Tim Cook betonte den immensen Respekt, welchen man für China habe und entschuldigte sich ernsthaft für die entstandenen Missverständnisse.
Gemäss Tim Cook wurden die Garantie-Bedingungen angepasst und für chinesische Kunden soll es in Zukunft einfacher sein, mit Apple in Kontakt zu treten. Die Mitarbeiter von Apple und den Apple-Partner werden zudem künftig besser geschult, um die Kundenwünsche besser befriedigen zu können.

Nach dem Aufwärtstrend seit Anfang März verlor die Apple-Aktie in der vergangenen Woche wieder kräftig an Wert. Nach einem Kurs-Höhepunkt von knapp 470 US-Dollar kurz nach Handelsbeginn am Montag begann der erneute Abwärtstrend. Bis am Gründonnerstag sank das Wertpapier auf 442.66 US-Dollar. Ausgelöst wurde dieses erneute Minus hauptsächlich durch negative Prognosen für Apples zweites Fiskalquartal 2013. Fortune spekuliert, dass Apples Gewinn zwischen Januar und März 2013 erstmals seit über einem Jahrzehnt gegenüber dem Vorjahr nicht mehr gewachsen ist. Apple soll demnach im Q2/2013 pro Aktie 10.18 US-Dollar eingenommen haben, während es im Vorjahr noch 12.30 US-Dollar waren. Bugs & Fixes: OS X Recent Items glitch
When you click and hold on an application's dock icon, its dock menu pops up. It typically includes a list of the application's recently opened documents (assuming it supports opening documents). I find these lists to be the most convenient way to quickly locate and open such files--preferring it to the Open Recent command in applications' File menus. Except for one thing: the dock menu lists periodically get messed up. Most especially the lists often don't update as you open new documents, leaving you with an out-of-date list. USPTO confirms invalidation of ërubber banding' patent
Apple has been dealt a blow by the US Patent Office, which has reaffirmed its preliminary invalidation of Apple's much publicized ërubber banding' patent (ë381), reports FOSS Patents. The latest ruling has been labeled a ëFinal Office Action' by the USPTO and was revealed in a court filing by Samsung's lawyers to Judge Lucy Koh, who is presiding over the legal battle between the two companies. Although significant, the latest ruling by the USPTO can still be appealed by Apple and the Cupertino-based company will have two months to make its case.

Apple hat im Verlauf des gestrigen Tages die erste Vorabversion von OS X 10.8.4 an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Diese erste Beta-Version von OS X 10.8.4 trägt die Build-Nummer 12E27. Den spärlichen Informationen von Apple nach zu urteilen beinhaltet das Update keine grösseren Veränderungen am Betriebssystem. Die Entwickler sollen sich bei dieser neuen Vorabversion vor allem auf die Bereiche WiFi, Grafik-Treiber und Safari fokussieren. Diese Bereiche standen bereits bei den zahlreichen Vorabversionen von OS X 10.8.3 im Zentrum des Interesses.

Daily iPhone App: Alien Hive might help evolve your brain
I am not sure whether I like Alien Hive or not, and I'll explain why in just a second. But last week at GDC, whenever I had a free moment to play games on my iPhone, I found myself pulling out Alien Hive and playing yet again. So I think that's more than enough reason to recommend it to you here.
The game was described to me as a match-3, and I guess it kind of is, in only that you need to match three items of a certain type to earn points. But in practice, it's much more like Triple Town than Bejeweled. This is a slower paced, thinking man's game, where you need to make your moves more carefully. T-Mobile reverses course, reveals Lumia 810 won't be updated to support LTE
We've some really unfortunate news to share with Lumia 810 owners who'd purchased the handset on T-Mobile's word that a software update would enable LTE support. Gameloft tries to make good with Dungeon Hunter 4
Gameloft is one of the most interesting companies on Apple's App Store. The company, run out of Paris, France, has earned a reputation for itself by essentially cloning popular console titles. Feedly hits 3 million users, updates its iOS apps
Feedly has quickly become the RSS feed-reading client to beat since the announcement of Google Reader's impending shutdown. Since Google's March 13 announcement, Feedly says it has seen over 3 million new users join the service. Fresh off an influx of new users the service has announced new versions of its mobile client for iPod, iPad, iPod touch, and Android.
For new users making the switch from Google Reader the process is simple: sign up for Feedly before Reader is gone on July 1 and your feeds will transfer over.

First beta of OS X 10.8.4 made available to developers
Just two weeks after Apple finally released Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 to Mac users, the development cycle on the next minor update, 10.8.4, has begun. Currently only available to AppleSeed testers, the first beta of 10.8.4 will be distributed to registered OS X developers through Software Update soon, and comes with no known issues. Curiously, the release notes on 10.8.4 are the same as the last betas of 10.8.3 -- asking testers to test Wi-Fi, graphics drivers and Safari. The new build, 12E27, is likely focused on bug fixes.

Appeals court denies ReDigi appeal, says music downloads can't be resold
ReDigi took a gamble that it could resell legally purchased song downloads, much as you would that one-hit wonder CD you bought in high school. Laying the groundwork for Galcon 2
Developer Phil Hassey kicked off our meeting at last week's GDC by showing me a necklace and a fridge magnet set both based on his oft-remade game Galcon, just two of the different rewards in the Kickstarter that recently raised him over $25,000 for development. Hassey has remade Galcon quite a few times during his years of development (including for a few popular iOS versions), but Galcon 2 promises to be his biggest work yet. Study: 'Phablets' a fad, iPhone screen sizes most popular
Mobile marketing analyst Flurry have unveiled their latest study, which draws samples from around one billion smartphones and some 2,000 unique device models worldwide. The study looked at both the distribution and usage by end-users of the top 200 device models, and found that "medium phones" with 3.5- to 4.9-inch screens were far and away the dominant choice in both areas. Phones with smaller screens were steadily declining in usage as buyers upgrade, and smaller tablets and "phablet" phones have yet to make much end-user headway.

Graeme Devine is a veteran game developer (he created The 7th Guest and then worked on Quake 3 and Halo Wars) who's turned his attention to iOS recently, putting together touch-based games meant for gamers of all ages. His latest title, which I got to see at GDC 2013 last week, is a board/card game called Rocket Patrol that runs on Apple's touchscreens. Judge: digital music reseller guilty of copyright infringement
A federal judge has ruled against digital music reseller ReDigi, describing the company's business model as a form of copyright infringement. The decision, which was posted by Wired (PDF), rejects ReDigi's claims of protection under the first-sale doctrine, as initial buyers can simply make a duplicate copy of a digital track before offering it for sale through the resale system.
