Open Data fördert Entwicklung von Apps und mobilen Geschäftsmodellen
Überall in Europa geben die Behörden ihre Datenschätze frei. Staatssekretäre werden zu CIOs und fördern mit Open Data Transparenz und die Entwicklung neuer mobiler Geschäftsmodelle.
Anfang März hat sich das Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz dazu entschlossen, seine Daten der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Im Rahmen der IT-Messe Cebit fiel der Startschuss für das Portal Open-Government-Data-Portal Rheinland-Pfalz (OGDP-RP), das zukünftig einen zentralen Zugang zu Verwaltungsdaten aus rheinland-pfälzischen Landesbehörden sowie rheinland-pfälzischen Kommunen bieten soll. Aber zu welchem Zweck?

Knapp einen Tag vor dem morgigen Facebook-Event sind jede Menge weiterer Renderings aufgetaucht, die das bisherige Bild so langsam etwas vervollständigen. Auch der Name HTC First macht jetzt (mehr) Sinn, denn wie es aussieht, ist das HTC-Modell tatsächlich nur das erste Android-Phone, das facebookifiziert wird. EVGA preps GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition
EVGA has announced the GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition, a new video card for the Mac Pro. The hardware uses 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, and includes four outputs: HDMI, DisplayPort 1.1, and two dual-link DVI connections. The card can also be used alongside Boot Camp and/or Windows, and supports standards including OpenCL and CUDA, which allow a video card to handle non-graphics tasks.

Panasonic Lumix GF6 passes through Taiwan certification with WiFi
Panasonic's support for WiFi in its Micro Four Thirds cameras has so far skewed toward the high end. Thanks to a new filing at Taiwan's National Communications Commission, though, we know the entry level should be covered as well. French Carrier Executive Claims Frugal Customers Hurting iPhone Sales
Stephane Richard, CEO of French Telecom, said in an interview with Bloomberg that customer behavior is changing and price-conscious consumers are driving demand for lower priced smartphones, threatening sales of comparatively expensive phones like the iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S line. The shift has been especially severe in Europe, where more customers are keeping the same phone when they switch carriers. Amid a slumping economy and mounting competition, France Telecom has seen prices drop 25 percent over the past three years, squeezing profit margins and its stock price. Gmail autocomplete updated with search history and contact thumbnails
Building off of last year's Gmail enhancements, Google is rolling out improved autocomplete predictions that display terms from your previous email searches. In addition to referencing your old inbox explorations, results now display thumbnails of people in your contact list. Apple versus Samsung Judge opens door to possible new trial
Judge Lucy Koh of the Northern District of California in San Francisco has entered an order on the recent battery of Apple and Samsung motions that have been brought in regards to the first contentious smartphone patent battle. While there aren't any clear decisions on anything, Judge Koh has left open the door for a full trial on the 14 accused products that need at the very least, a new damages declaration.

Briefly: Sonic Racing coming to Mac, Gustav Line expansion
Feral Interactive has announced that Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing will be released in the Mac App Store on April 4. Starring classing characters from Sonic the Hedgehog and other SEGA favorites, the racing game allows players to race across tracks inspired by SEGA's most popular game worlds. Full support will be included for Apple's Game Center, allowing up to four players to compete online. Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing will retail for $25 and is the first Sonic game to to be published on the Mac, with the second, SEGA Superstars Tennis, to follow this year.

Jobs' yacht 'Venus' spotted at West Palm Beach marina
Venus, the yacht designed by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and French designer Philip Starck, has docked in Florida waters after a cruise of the Caribbean, a local gossip column reports. The 260-foot vessel has docked at the Rybovich Marina in West Palm Beach after sailing into the Intercoastal Waterway that criss-crosses the southern portion of the state. The ship is now owned and used by Jobs' family, but it is unknown if they are staying in the area. The ship is said to be eventually heading to a new home in California.

Twitter for iOS gets support for app installation features
Social network Twitter has released a new version of its iOS app, v5.5. The update reflects recent changes to the Cards system, and lets people install or launch apps from links embedded in tweets. Although not all apps are being supported initially, people can, for instance, tap a link in a tweet from Path to go to the app's App Store page. If an app is already installed, the link may open up content there.

Researchers wrangle microscopic particles with sonic lasso
When you think about it, scientists and cowboys have a lot in common. Both are frontiersmen of a sort, both wear clothes that make them easy to identify and now they both count lassos among their essential tools. Researchers at the University of Bristol and the University of Dundee have wrangled small particles and cells by using a sonic (or ultrasonic) vortex. The whirl of sound waves allowed the teams to catch, move and orient microscopic particles, all without actually contacting them physically, which makes the solution ideal for handling delicate material. Audiobooks are not backed up by iCloud, can only be downloaded once
Audiobooks, unlike your other iTunes purchases, cannot be re-downloaded from the store. On a Mac, you can dig into your iTunes folder and move the DRM-protected files to another authorized machine. iOS devices, however, lack a file system that the user can access, so if you never sync with a Mac, you could run into an issue like I did when I had to swap out my iPhone 5.
A couple of weeks ago my iPhone 5's power button started acting strange. It appeared to be a mechanical issue, so I went to the Genius Bar at my local store and was told they've seen this happen before (it was likely shearing stress from removing a protective case).
Of course, they don't repair iPhones

Rdio Launches Video Streaming Service and App Vdio [iOS Blog]
Music subscription service Rdio has expanded to video, today launching a movie and television streaming service called Vdio. Vdio functions like iTunes rather than like Netflix, allowing users to purchase and rent video content. Though it does not offer a subscription service, Vdio does incorporate social content discovery, allowing users to see what their friends are viewing. Vdio users are also able to create and share playlists. Pricing is similar to iTunes and Amazon, with a movie rental costing approximately $5 and TV shows priced at $3. Another study claims iOS US web traffic dominant, growing
Another survey, this time from Piper Jaffray tech sector analyst Gene Munster, adds to a number of other surveys of the US mobile web traffic landscape and finds that the iOS platform both dominates and is growing its share of user engagement in Internet-related mobile use. As with the other studies, Munster's analysis of a hand-picked list of 10 of the top 100 mobile websites found that iOS traffic accounts for around 65 percent of mobile visits during the past two months, while Android made up only 30 percent of mobile traffic.

SkyDrive 3.0 app update may mark end to Apple/Microsoft dispute
A v3.0 update of Microsoft's SkyDrive app for iOS has arrived on the App Store. The release appears to mark the end of a dispute between Apple and Microsoft; Apple was reportedly rejecting earlier updates over Microsoft's introduction of the ability to buy extra storage space. The issue is that Apple was demanding a 30 percent cut of subscriptions in perpetuity, even though a person can continue to use SkyDrive even if they stop using the iOS app.

Microsoft SkyDrive 3.0 update finally makes it into the App Store
In December of 2012, we reported on how Apple was delaying updates to Microsoft's SkyDrive iOS app over a dispute on whether or not Apple should receive its customary 30 percent cut on storage plans purchased through the app. Well, apparently the bickering couple has kissed and made up, as the SkyDrive 3.0 update is now available in the App Store.

Twitter revamp brings native experience to Android, expanded Card content
We already knew Twitter was planning on expanding its Card content to include app, gallery and product info. But the company apparently had another sweeping change waiting in the wings: a UI refresh for Android. The update, which is currently rolling out to users, aims to bring the 140 characters or less experience more in line with native Android design. Twitter for iOS Updated to Allow App Installs and Launches from Within Tweets [iOS Blog]
Twitter has updated its iOS app to version 5.5, adding the ability to launch and install apps from within a tweet on the iPhone. The new functionality is part of Twitter's updated Cards feature, which was introduced yesterday at a developer meetup. Apple TV set due in 2013 with speculated 'iRing' for motion control?

According to a Reuters story today, Australian officials are planning to have large corporations like Apple and Google disclose their tax arrangements in an attempt to crack down on alleged tax avoidance by multinationals. Australian Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury said that the "increasingly borderless global economy means big firms often have no tax liability in a country."

Amazon AutoRip for Vinyl Records gives customers free MP3 copies
Vinyl record fans don't have to rip their own digital recordings any more. Amazon today announced AutoRip for Vinyl Records, which gives customers who have purchased vinyl records from the company since 1998 a free MP3 version of those albums. This expands on the AutoRip CD program announced in January, 2013.
At this point, Amazon notes that "thousands of records, including titles from every major record label" are available for AutoRip and more are being added all the time. To determine if a record is available in MP3 format, customers just need to look for the AutoRip logo -- those little blue and green arrows seen above -- when buying CDs or vinyl.

Three years ago today the first iPad had us waiting in lines to buy one
Hands up, all of you still using your first-generation iPads. Although it was only three years ago, the iPad has progressed quite a bit since its introduction (which was in January -- Apple didn't specify a release date at the time). Codenamed K48, the iPad was in development before the iPhone, but obviously the iPhone took design cues from the iPad and would set the smartphone standard for several years.

Google blames iTunes-related search results on technical problems
Strange search results when looking for iOS apps are connected to technical problems, says Google. AppsFire co-founder Ouriel Ohayon has pointed out that when handling searches for apps, Google's servers have recently been burying App Store links, potentially up to several pages deep. "We've been having some issues fetching pages from the iTunes web servers, and as a result some people may have had problems finding iTunes apps in search easily," Google explains in an official response. According to the latest data from Net Applications, Apple's Safari still dominates mobile browser web traffic. As reported by John Paczkowski at AllThingsD, Safari for iOS grabbed 61.79 percent of all mobile browser web traffic in March of 2013, up from 55.41 percent in February.
Net Applications bases its numbers on 160 million visits to more than 40,000 websites each month. The numbers show that despite being installed on many more devices than Safari, Google's Android browser on captures 21.86 percent of mobile web traffic, followed by Opera Mini at 8.4 percent.

Adobe has announced availability for a final release of Lightroom 4.4, along with an updated Camera Raw and DNG Converter (both now at version 7.4). Amazon introduces Cloud Drive File Sync for OS X
Amazon has introduced file syncing to its Cloud Drive app for OS X, which essentially makes Cloud Drive Amazon's version of Dropbox.
Mac users can install the app on OS X 10.6, OS X 10.7 or OS X 10.8, and drag files in and out of the Cloud Drive folder. Any file put into the Cloud Drive folder will be available on any Mac or Windows machine running Cloud Drive with your login details. The files are also available through any web browser.

Mozilla has released Firefox version 20 for OS X, which adds several new features and enhancements. Most notably, the download manager is now accessible from the toolbar. Previously it was hidden and users had to access it through the menu bar or keyboard shortcuts.
You can use the new download manager to pause and resume downloads, cancel them, open the downloads folder, or go to the website from which a downloaded item originated.

Stürzte sich erneut Mitarbeiter von Foxconn-Gebäude?
Über den chinesischen Mikroblogging-Dienst «Sina Weibo» wurde am Freitag die Meldung verbreitet, dass sich eine Mitarbeiterin von Foxconn vom Dach eines Fabrik-Gebäudes gestürzt haben soll. Zudem sollen sich gemäss der Meldung drei weitere Personen auf dem Dach befunden haben — diese sprangen allerdings nicht vom Gebäude. Ein Statement von Foxconn gegenüber AppleInsider lässt nun aber Zweifel an dieser Darstellung aufkommen.
Gemäss Foxconn kam es in der Fabrik von Longhua zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit drei Mitarbeitern, nachdem das Unternehmen diesen Mitarbeitern einen Arbeitsplatzwechsel angeboten hatte. Hearing aid maker sues Apple over EarPods, alleges trademark infringement
Late last week, Apple was hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit courtesy of Randolph Divisions, a company that manufactures digital hearing aids. The Next Web reports that the suit, which was filed in Hawaii, alleges that Apple's EarPods headphones infringe upon their own "HearPod" trademark and product.

Heute: Das Handy wird 40
Heute vor vierzig Jahren, am 3. April 1973, hat Martin Cooper (der auch das Patent hält) in Manhattan den ersten Anruf über ein "Handy" getätigt, dem Prototypen eines Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. Der Anruf galt einem Rivalen Joe S. Engel bei AT&T, den er danach fragte "ob sich mein Anruf auf deiner Seite gut anhört". Das 4000 Dollar teure Statussymbol war mit über einem Kilo Gewicht zwar noch reichlich unhandlich und kam auch erst knapp zehn Jahre später auf den Markt, hatte dann aber schon 1983 acht Stunden Standbyzeit, auch wenn man sich bei 30 Minuten Redezeit noch kurz fassen musste. Irgendwie hat sich da in den letzten vierzig Jahren dann doch verhältnismässig wenig getan, oder?

Google explains why iTunes search results were missing in action
As of Tuesday morning, searches for iOS apps on Google weren't resulting in overt links to Apple's iTunes Store. Direct links to apps on iTunes appeared deeper within Google's search results than usual.
Reports of the quirky search results were first made public on Facebook by AppsFire co-founder Ouriel Ohayon. "Something really weird start to happen on google [sic]," he said. "It has become impossible to find iPhone and iPad apps looking for them in the search engine with a normal query."

Kunden tauschen ihre Musik-Downloads legal aus ein mögliches Verfahren beschreibt Apple in einem Patentantrag aus diesem Jahr. Das aktuelle Urteil eines US-Gerichts könnte diesen Plänen einen Strich durch die Rechnung machen: Heruntergeladene Songs dürfen nicht “gebraucht” weiterverkauft werden.

Tim Cook: Offener Brief an chinesische Kunden
Nach wochenlanger Kritik chinesischer Medien an Apples Umgang mit Garantiefällen in dem Land hat Tim Cook jetzt einen offenen Brief an die Kunden verfasst. Der CEO ergänzt damit eine vorige Stellungnahme des Unternehmens zu dem Thema und entschuldigt sich bei den Betroffenen.Wer sein iPhone 4 oder 4S wegen eines Hardware-Fehlers austauschen ließ, erhielt häufig ein Neugerät — bis auf die Rückplatte. Apple-AX-Chips: Samsung-Exklusivvertrag soll im Juni auslaufen
Seit einiger Zeit gibt es Gerüchte, dass Apple seine AX-Prozessoren in Zukunft nicht mehr von Samsung, sondern von TSMC produzieren lassen wird. Angeblich soll es nun aber soweit sein: Der Vertrag mit Samsung soll im Juni auslaufen, für den Apple A7 soll Samsung schon keine Bestellungen mehr bekommen.
Wichtigster Grund für den Wechsel von Samsung zu Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) dürfte die Tatsache sein, dass Samsung und Apple nicht nur Partner in Sachen Komponenten-Produktion, sondern auch Konkurrenten auf dem Smartphone-Markt sind. Swisscom 4G/LTE-Ausbau: 159 Orte erschlossen
Die Swisscom vermeldet ein neuen Meilenstein beim Ausbau des neuen 4G/LTE-Mobilfunknetzes. Das seit November 2012 verfügbare Netz wurde stetig ausgebaut und ist neu in 159 Orten verfügbar. Laut der Swisscom kann aktuell gut jeder dritte Schweizer auf das 4G/LTE-Netz zugreifen. Vergangenen November startete die Swisscom das erste und bisher einzige Schweizer Netz der neuen Mobilfunkgeneration «4G» bzw. «LTE» in 26 Städten und Gemeinden. In den vergangenen vier Monaten hat die Swisscom nun über 120 weitere Orte erschlossen und deckt damit 35 Prozent der Bevölkerung in urbanen und ländlichen Gebieten ab. Rund 300‘000 Swisscom Kunden nutzen bereits ein 4G/LTE-fähiges Smartphone. Durch die neue Mobilfunkgeneration können Kunden von höheren Kapazitäten, mehr Tempo und kürzeren Reaktionszeiten profitieren — dies auch ohne ein teures LTE-Abo. John Gruber von «Daring Fireball» will aus vertraulicher Quelle Neuigkeiten zu iOS 7 erfahren haben. Gemäss Gruber arbeiten die Ingenieure von Apple hart daran, um möglichst schnell Fortschritte bei iOS 7 zu machen. Angeblich wurden bereits Ingenieure von OS X 10.9 abgezogen, um die Arbeiten an iOS 7 zu unterstützen. Falls dieses Gerücht stimmen würde, dann wäre die Verschiebung der Ressourcen ein eindrücklicher Beweis dafür, wie entschlossen Apple die Post-PC-Strategie umsetzt. Möglicherweise hat diese Verschiebung der Ressourcen die Folge, dass OS X 10.9 später auf den Markt kommen wird. Es wäre nicht das erste Mal, dass Apple so vorgehen würde — bereits 2007 wurden bei der Entwicklung für das iPhone Ressourcen bei OS X Leopard abgezogen, wodurch sich das Mac-Betriebssystem verspätete.

Apple-AX-Chips: Samsung-Exklusivvertrag soll im Juni auslaufen
Seit einiger Zeit gibt es Gerüchte, dass Apple seine AX-Prozessoren in Zukunft nicht mehr von Samsung, sondern von TSMC produzieren lassen wird. Reuters: Google bringt im Juli neues Nexus 7

Google will im Juli ein neues Nexus 7 in den Verkauf bringen. Das haben zwei unterschiedliche Quellen Reuters berichtet. Demnach wird auch die zweite Generation des Tablets von Asus produziert, an Stelle des Nvidia Tegra-Prozessors soll nun aber ein Qualcomm Snapdragon rücken, weil dieser energieeffizienter arbeite. Witching Hour adds multiplayer into Ravenmark Mercenaries
Last year, Witching Hour Studios (a team that's grown to about eight people now) released Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion, a turn-based strategy title that felt way bigger than the little iPhone's screen it played on. The gameplay is complex (there are lots of units to control and every unit counters and is countered by another), but it's also very impressive, featuring big-scale battles and a story to match.

Everplay Interactive plans a solid lineup this year
Developer Kris Jones started out his iOS game design career at a company called Thunder Game Works, which made a popular early App Store game called Trenches before the company connected up with EA as a publisher. These days, Jones runs his own studio of twelve people called Everplay Interactive, and they've created some really great games for iOS, including Spell Sword (one of my favorites), Free 2 Die, and the simple but devious 1001 Attempts.

Google+ now allows full-size photo uploads from desktop browsers
As glad as we are that Google gave mobile photographers the chance to upload full-size photos to Google+ back in December, the absence of a desktop equivalent has been more than a little conspicuous. We're back to equilibrium now that Google has enabled full-size uploading from any old computer's browser. Enable the option and a collection can hit the servers just as you'd remembered it. Like with mobile uploads, though, this isn't intended as a large-scale backup service: any images more than 2,048 pixels across (or videos over 15 minutes) will still count towards whatever your Google Drive cap may be. Elroy wants to hang with you
If you saw my post earlier today about Klingg, you might think that a new Kickstarter project -- Elroy -- is similar. Both hold onto your clothing, both have something to do with earbuds. But that's where the similarity stops. Elroy is a tiny Bluetooth device that's meant to do away with long earbud cables by clipping onto a collar and using special "shorty cord earbuds" instead.

iOS 7 Running Behind, Rumored to Have Significant Visual Makeover
In a Branch chat, which at the time of this writing is still going on, Daring Fireball's Jon Gruber says that, according to what he's heard, iOS 7 is running behind schedule and that it will bring a significant user interface (UI) refresh. What I've heard: iOS 7 is running behind, and engineers have been pulled from OS X 10.9 to work on it. Google changes Android dashboard numbers to count active users, not just pings
The Android device dashboard has been providing a picture of OS version distribution since before Froyo pushed aside Eclair, but now it's seeing some changes. Notre Dame students highlight method for 3D printing skeletons of living animals
Can you really claim to love your pet if you haven't printed out its skeletal structure for your mantle? Phoster for iOS creates posters and invitations
Phoster is a free universal iOS app that is really one of the most useful and clever photography-related apps I have seen in a long time. The app creates posters and invitations that look like they were professionally designed, yet the base elements are provided by the user. There are 197 different templates, all tastefully done and easy to modify.
To begin, you insert photos from your camera roll, or take a photo on the spot from within the app. Phoster lets you vary the background colors and the size, color and fonts for text, and add filters to further customize your creation.

Call Bliss 1.1 improves on the original
I reviewed Call Bliss by Clarke Hill (US$4.99) in January. It's an alternative to Apple's Do Not Disturb feature that extends the service with nice additions such as location awareness, which lets you block or permit incoming calls while you're at a certain location.
I had some issues with version 1.0, and most were design-related. Fortunately, version 1.1 makes huge improvements. For starters, the introductory tutorial is much improved, as the eye-straining logo has been removed. The whole thing is significantly easier to read and more pleasant to look

Google brings Quickoffice for iPhone, Android to business users
Google has brought Quickoffice to the iPhone and Android devices for Apps for Business customers.
