Deepworld now available on the Mac App Store
Deepworld is a game that I've been covering since last year's GDC, when the three guys running the game came to tell me that they were putting together a 2D, multiplayer online sandbox title, in the same vein as Minecraft but with a steampunk twist. Last year, the game launched on Mac, and then it arrived on iOS, and the latest news, as relayed to me by Bytebin at last week's GDC, is that the game is now out on the Mac App Store for free.
Obviously, as the game was already available on the Mac, this isn't necessarily a big

AMD roadmap shows Steamroller-based Opterons on track for 2013
AMD gave us a tease of its next-generation Steamroller architecture in 2012, but things weren't looking good for pro users when the initial timeline had current-generation Piledriver technology as the focus for Opterons in 2013. Thanks to a newer investor presentation, there's a glimmer of hope for the workstation and server users among us. Its roadmap shows Steamroller-equipped Opteron variants arriving this year, with an Excavator follow-up coming at an undetermined point

Streaming radio may be the next frontier for Apple's music efforts
In a rather interesting article last week detailing music service Pandora's ongoing struggle with record labels' streaming fees, The Verge says that "iRadio," Apple's rumored Pandora competitor, is being primed for a launch this Summer.
"Much has been written about Apple's plan to launch a Pandora-esque service this year. Now multiple music industry insiders have told The Verge that significant progress has been made in the talks with two of the top labels: Universal and Warner. One of the sources said "iRadio i

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE hits AT&T retail on April 5th with a $249 contract option
Have you eyed the LTE version of Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 8.9, yet remained skittish about buying such a relatively expensive tablet sight-unseen? AT&T is now willing to accommodate you: stop by an AT&T retail store from April 5th onward and you can pick up a 32GB model in person. The carrier is also offering an alternative purchase model. The $399 contract-free purchase is still available for those who want their freedom, but the initial price can drop to $249 for anyone willing to sign a two-year contract for a data plan.

Review: RadTech RadSleevz for iPad mini
The sleeve is nothing more than a sheet of the stretchy, form-fitting fabric folded in on itself and sewn together along the top and bottom edges. It’s soft, and can be used as a cleaning cloth when not protecting your iPad. In its natural state, RadSleevz is a slightly smaller than the tablet, but it easily stretches to properly fit the shape as you insert the device through the open edge. Although RadTech says the sleeve is compatible with…

San Francisco Apple Store to be expanded
Apple is planning to expand its retail store in San Francisco's Stonestown Galleria, says a report in ifoAppleStore. The Stonestown store is one of Apple's smallest retail stores with a storefront that measures 25 feet wide and a footprint that offers a measly 1,500 square feet of retail space for customers, merchandise and services.
According to ifoAppleStore, Apple will be moving to a nearby location in the mall that'll triple the space of its current store. The new spot will have a curved glass front, which will fit in nicely with Apple's design aesthetics.

San Francisco DA claims next two iPhone designs preceded Tim Cook
The designs for the next two generations of iPhone have already been developed, claims the district attorney for San Francisco, George Gascón. Unusually, in an interview about smartphone and tablet thefts, Gascón claims to have been personally informed about the future hardware by an Apple government liaison, Michael Foulkes. Their designs "preceded Tim Cook [becoming CEO]," Gascón says, while arguing that he would eventually like to see a killswitch technology that could disable a mobile device after it's reported stolen. Many devices can already be remotely wiped, including the iPhone, bu

3 things Apple should steal from Google and Facebook for iOS 7

Some (like me) don't expect to see a major redesign in the next release, but incremental improvements -- like the removal of skeuomorphism from some apps. Whatever the case, I hope Apple will consider stealing borrowing these three UI features from Facebook and Google iOS apps to make iOS even simpler to use:

Years later, in 2007, Apple dropped the "computer" from its title, heralding a new era beyond personal computers. Apple's bottom line lately has reflected this, as Macs are no longer the primary source of revenue for the Cupertino powerhouse -- not by a long shot.
Still, it's fun to

Ericsson T28z review
When Ericsson launched the T28 in 1999, it was the lightest and slimmest phone on the market. It was also the first handset ever to use a lithium polymer battery. The T28 was a premium device -- Ericsson described it as "designer technology", and it was successful with business executives before the Blackberry became popular. Unlike its bar-shaped competitors, the T28 was immediately recognizable by its signature antenna stub and "active flip" keypad cover. Ericsson packed the phone with state-of-the-art features like voice dialing and an optional Bluetooth dongle. It came in three versions: T28s (GSM 1800 / 900), T28z (GSM 1900) and T28 World (GSM 1900/900). Our

Prank crashes iMessages
Late last week, several iOS developers were hit with a denial of service attack that used Apple iMessages as the vector. According to a report in The Next Web, Grant Paul (chpawn), iH8sn0w and a half-dozen other developers were flooded with text messages that crashed the iMessages app on iOS.
The person or group behind the attack is not known, but The Next Web believes it originated with a Twitter account that sells UDIDs and provisioning profiles to iOS owners who want to sideload pirated apps. The attacker likely used the OS X Messages app and Applescript to automate the sending of text messages. When the attack was in

Galaxy on Fire Alliances takes Fishlabs' setting in a new direction
A little while back, Fishlabs announced that they were working on a new title in the Galaxy on Fire space exploration series of games, and that it would take a bit of a new direction, as a strategy MMO rather than as an action title. Last week at GDC, I got to sit down with the company and see the new game, and I can say it was very impressive indeed. Fans who just wanted to play another version of the same game may be a bit disappointed, but Alliances represents a great new direction for the series, and has provided a good chance for Fishlabs to use this great engine they've built to show off their talent in another genre.
I'm not sure quite what this genre is called: I guess "strategy MMO" is closest,

Apple's 'iPad Mini' Trademark Application Initially Denied, but Resolution Should Be Simple
Over the weekend, Patently Apple reported that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had refused Apple's trademark application for the term "iPad mini". While some such as The Verge's Nilay Patel were quick to note that the refusal was simply a first office action that is nowhere near final, the refusal does offer an interesting glimpse into the thinking of patent examiners. The examiner's primary objection to Apple's application takes the view that the term is "merely descriptive" rather than creating a unique brand name that is worthy of protection. The examiner argues that all elements of the name, including "i", "Pad", a

Cutetown San Francisco is an interesting iPad app for creating 3D maps
This app won't be easy to describe, but here goes. Cutetown is a free iPad app equipped with an aerial photo of San Francisco and parts of the Stanford University Campus. You can select buildings from the 2D photo, then extrude them in height, width and depth before adding pre-formed 3D roofs, windows, doors, etc. When you are done, a 3D building has been added to the map and you can go back and grab another. It's not a serious map making or 3D app, but kind of like having some control over a Sim City layout without the animation.
The app features a tutorial -- which isn't always clear -- after which you're sent on your way to start creating buildings. You have to sign up for an a

Semi-official 'Apple Refurb' Ebay store closed
An eBay store that sold refurbished Apple products -- seemingly with Apple's blessing -- at prices equal to or below those of Apple's own refurbished store has been closed, at least temporarily. The store, which sold officially-refurbished Apple products under the seller name "refurbished_outlet" (a long-standing power seller on eBay) now has no products listed after zeroing out all inventory sometime Saturday. The store gained notoriety by selling some items below normal refurb prices, offering a PayPal option, and avoiding taxes in some states.

Customers who opted for the lower range configuration will still get a car, of course, but it will be a 60kWh machine with software restrictions on range. It sounds like a raw deal, but Tesla promises customers that the artificially limited Model S will reap unexpected benefits from the battery swap -- that is, improved acceleration and

Tim Cook High School yearbook photos reveal Apple CEO was voted "most studious" two years running
Largely regarded and respected as an extremely hardworking and efficient, recently released High School photos of Apple CEO Tim Cook reveal that Cook was diligent as a student as he is now as an executive.
The photos below were unearthed this past weekend by a user on Reddit and show that Cook, like most of us, was a gawky teenager prone to the fashion of the times - in this case, an interesting pair of plaid pants. That's certainly surprising and somewhat comical given Cook's current reputation for being rather straight laced.
Here we see a photo of Cook, along with his snazzy pants, holding a trophy for winning his school's optimist oratorical contest.

Musicians who've had some degree of practice will know the lack of sophistication involved in getting an instrument in tune and on time: a light-up tuning box and a swinging metronome may be their only real resources. Affinity Blue knows that mobile apps allow better, and recently unveiled Tunable as a one-stop shop for more exacting performers. The Android and iOS release provides a live graph that shows where the sweet spot is for pitch, and how closely the music has followed along for the past few seconds -- a boon for brass players, vocalists and others who need to sustain a note fo
