Makerbot demoes scanner to streamline 3D fabrication process
On Friday, 3D printing startup Makerbot demonstrated a new scanner that allows users to scan and then 3D print the objects. The Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner is a prototype, but Makerbot says it plans to make the device available to consumers before the holiday season of 2013. The scanner can process objects between two and eight square inches in less than three minutes. The target device is placed on a rotor, and lasers scan the device from every angle.

Desktop Groups: Add floating file pallettes to your desktop
Desktop Groups ($7.99) offers a nice utility for anyone looking for a fresh take on desktop organization. It creates little floating window palettes for arranging your workspace.
Each group can be shown open or closed. The windows live essentially at the same level as the desktop. That means any work naturally opens up on top of these groups. You name and group floating items exactly as you please.
Unfortunately, to comply with App Store rules, Desktop Groups doesn't really support aliases. I was hoping to use the app to arrange in-progress book projects but found that my carefully collected aliases weren't compatible. Clicking aliases locates the original Finder alias file. Bing Desktop now integrates better with Facebook, adds more customization options
It's been awhile since Microsoft made the Bing Desktop application compatible with more versions of Windows, but today the company's giving current (and potential) users more reasons to enjoy it. Most notably, Bing now lets social folks peek Facebook's News Feed and friends' photos from within the application, leaving out the need to launch a browser in a separate window. Wrapcam is a clever and unique photo editor for iOS
We've seen a lot of photo editors in these parts, but Wrapcam takes a different approach to editing and enhancing photos. Even better, this app is free until approximately noon PDT tomorrow.
Besides all the usual filters for framing, color saturation, and so on, this app lets you take your photo and wrap it as if it were a piece of paper. There are several presets for this, and you can modify most filters by swiping on your device screen. There are nice page curl filters, scroll effects, and dozens more.

Visualized: Sonos' speaker-building, light-showing, neon-couching SXSW house
House parties are really the rule, not the exception here at SXSW -- it's an outgrowth of the show's Austin roots. Must See HDTV (March 11th - 17th)
This week is surprisingly 3D heavy, with basketball tournament action on ESPN and a pair of movies (Life of Pi and Rise of the Guardians) on Blu-ray, but a blast from the past has caught our eye. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. Australian Grand Prix Formula 1 is finally back, and for the first time in the US, on NBC Sports. Google updates Gmail web app, Gmail Offline with new looks
Google has updated the designs of the Gmail web app as well as Gmail Offline, its Chrome extension, according to an official Google+ post. In both circumstances the updates carry over UI changes that first debuted in a December overhaul of the native iOS app. The new web app is accessible not only on iOS but on Android, BlackBerry, and the Kindle Fire.

'HiddenApps' Hides Stock Apps, iAds and More on Non-Jailbroken iOS Devices
An app that hides the standard apps on the iPhone like Stocks or Newsstand has evaded Apple's App Store approval process. 'HiddenApps', a free download on the App Store, lets users hide Apple's stock applications, disable iAds, and access the hidden Field Test mode, according to iDownloadBlog. It is likely that the app will be removed from the App Store very quickly, as other apps that have broken App Store rules have disappeared quite quickly in the past. Switching from Android to iPhone is easier than you think
If you or somebody you know is thinking of migrating from an Android phone to an iPhone TechHive has put together a great article that makes the process as simple as possible. The article details the relatively simple process of transferring your contacts over, but it also goes into the more complex processes of transferring your files from an Android phone to an iPhone. OUYA holding official unveiling on March 28th in San Francisco
We're getting closer and closer to the launch of the much-hyped OUYA console. The Android-powered gaming machine will start shipping to backers on March 28th and to celebrate the company is having a little shindig in San Francisco that will serve as a proper "unveiling." Samsung's latest Chromebook now supports Netflix courtesy of HTML5 streaming
Samsung's most recent Chromebook may get the job done for those who rely mostly on websites and web apps, but there have still been some gaps in the web-based services it supports -- like Netflix. That's changed today, though, with Google announcing that it has collaborated with Netflix and Microsoft to enable HTML5 video streaming on the ARM-based Chromebook. That notably also makes it the first instance of Netflix using HTML5 for streaming instead of Silverlight, although there's no indication of it spreading to other devices just yet. Low-end Txtr Beagle e-reader coming to the US for $70, not $13

Fleksy Demos Leap Motion Integration at SXSW, Releases new iOS SDK [iOS Blog]
Syntellia, the company behind popular alternative keyboard app Fleksy, is developing software that will allow the app to work with the upcoming Leap Motion Controller. Syntellia is demoing the Fleksy and Leap Motion combo at SXSW this week. Fleksy is a text-input system that implements advanced predictive text algorithms to allow users to type without looking at the screen of the iPhone or the iPad. Though it offers a traditional tap typing interface, it also supports simple gestures for space and delete. Fingerprint, NFC tech coming to iPhone 5S, report claims
The iPhone 5S will implement both NFC and a fingerprint sensor, the China Times alleges. A Taiwanese company, Chipbond, will reportedly provide touch display drivers and some other necessary parts. The fingerprint system is expected to operate in service of the NFC, providing extra security for mobile payments. It should also be based on development work by AuthenTec, a company Apple bought out last summer explicitly for its fingerprint technology.

Microsoft offers access to Office365 to college students
Microsoft is offering students in US colleges access to the educational version of Office 365 at no charge. Anyone who's still wondering if iPads are truly an educational tool should check out the video Apple has posted highlighting the use of iPads in Burlington High, a public Massachusetts high school. Google brings iOS Gmail app's interface to the mobile web and Gmail Offline
Google had a very warm reception to the improved search and overall sleeker UI in Gmail 2.0 for iOS -- warm enough, in fact, that it's spreading the redesign work to its web apps. Both the mobile web app and Gmail Offline now share the same basic look as the iOS port as well as its search and Google Calendar integration. MacBook Pro with Retina display tops Windows 8 laptops, Chromebook in battery test
Mac users who need power, portability, and battery longevity can rest easy knowing the latest MacBook Pro outlasts the latest Windows 8 laptops and at least one Chromebook model in battery tests. UK consumer reports magazine Which? tested the battery life of 18 Windows 8 laptops against the latest 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and a Chromebook.

Philips opens up Hue LED bulbs to external developers
Philips has opened up access to its mobile-controllable LED lights for developers to use. iOS Maps upgrades hit Japan without 6.1.3
At least some promised Maps upgrades are reaching Japanese iOS users even though iOS 6.1.3 isn't available to the public, says Japanese site Macotakara. The improvements were originally slated to debut in v6.1.1, but were postponed when Apple had to deal with several major glitches. It's not clear how the v6.1.3 changes are propagating without new firmware, but at least some changes might be possible via updated map downloads.

How Apple introduced brushed metal
Remember when "brushed metal" dominated the look of Apple's software products, including OS X? Stephen Hackett at 512 Pixels does, and he's put together a look at its origins.
Brushed metal didn't debut with Mac OS X 10.3, as many believe. Instead, Hackett notes, the UI motif first slipped onto our screens with QuickTime 4.0 in 1999:
"The feature that's most remembered, of course, is its UI. Gone was the Platinum look that graced almost every single window in MacOS, replaced with a slick UI with embedded buttons, dials and more."

It's easy for two people to meet up at the mall. They just arrive at the appointed time and look for each other. This simple task is not so easy for blind people, who could be right around the corner from each other and not realize it. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has a new target in his quest to improve the health of New Yorkers -- the earbud. Originally reported in the New York Post, Bloomberg is kicking off a campaign to warn city dwellers about the dangers of pumping up the volume to 11 when you are wearing in-ear headphones.

Apple suppliers suffer terrible February, but now hiring
Apple suppliers performed poorly during February, says Topeka Capital analyst Brian White. The claim is based on an "Apple Monitor," a collection of suppliers the analyst tracks as a way of gauging Apple's performance. Collectively the companies were down 31 percent in February, versus a normal 8 percent drop for the month. The results are bad even when considering the effect of the Chinese New Year, White says -- "the worst February we have on record."

Apple, IGB 'Close To Settlement' on Brazilian 'iPhone' trademark lawsuit
Apple is close to reaching a settlement for the "iPhone" trademark in Brazil, according to Forbes. The company has been locked in a lawsuit with Brazilian company IGB Electronica, which was granted the Brazilian iPhone trademark in 2007. IGB originally applied for the iPhone trademark in 2000. Since 2007, it has been selling a smartphone by the name of "Iphone" under its G-Gradiente brand. The phone runs the Android OS.
Forbes notes that Brazil's largest newspaper, Folha de São Paulo, reported on Saturday that the two companies have entered into a "Pacific agreement," which will see lawsuits

No, that headline isn't a joke. You can tell we're living in the 21st century when even lightbulbs have SDKs. The new Philips SDK and APIs are for the company's Hue Connected lighting system. MacBook Pro with Retina users report fan issue
A number of early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro owners are reporting fan speed issues, according to plenty of reports around the web including on Apple's own discussion forums. Latest Apple TVs have smaller A5 chip
When Apple tweaked its third generation Apple TV earlier this year, rumors suggested it might use Apple's A5X chip instead of the A5 chip. However it's now been confirmed that the tweaked Apple TV uses an A5 chip, although it's slightly smaller than the A5 chip found in the previous model.
MacRumors cracked one of the new Apple TVs open and found the smaller A5 chip. The 2012 Apple TV's chip measured 8.19 mm by 8.68 mm, while the new 2013 model's chip measures just 6 mm by 6 mm.
While users shouldn't notice any difference between the models, the smaller A5 chip in the new model could represent an important shift for Apple. As MacRumors notes

Mozilla: No Firefox on iOS until Apple relaxes rules
Mozilla won't be bringing Firefox to iOS so long as Apple maintains its currently policy towards third-party browsers, according to the company's VP of product, Jay Sullivan. The executive made the comments over the weekend as the ongoing SXSW gathering in Austin, Texas. He added that the company isn't currently building a Firefox iOS app, and isn't planning to. Der große chinesische Technikproduzent Foxconn (iPhone, iPad etc.) musste diesen Februar heftige Umsatzeinbuße hinnehmen. Wurden im Januar 2013 noch 8,12 Mrd. Euro umgesetzt, waren es im Februar nur noch 6,09 Mrd. Euro. Fast ein Viertel weniger. Foxconn hat seit einiger Zeit mit einem Umsatzverlust von jährlich 22,1 Prozent zu kämpfen. Die schwachen Smartphoneabsätze nach dem Jahreswechsel kommen hier wohl erschwerend hinzu. Klingt fast so, als wären iPhone und iPad nur für Apple ein profitables Geschäft.

Mozilla has no plans to release Firefox for iOS
At SWSX this weekend, VP of product at Mozilla, Jay Sullivan, said that there are no plans to bring the Firefox Web browser to iOS unless Apple changes its ways, according to CNET. The issue stems from a limitation Apple puts on developers stating that third party browsers can only use UIWebView, and not the Nitro JavaScript engine Apple uses in its Safari browser for iOS.
The Nitro JavaScript engine gives Safari a significant performance boost over other browsers. Sullivan also noted that there's no way to make a third-party browser the default on iOS, and that's something else he'd like to see changed.

Watch a vintage Mac 512K talk to an iMac via Siri
Niles Mitchell has a variety of Apple devices, including an iPhone with Siri, an iMac and a Vintage Mac 512K. Using a combination of the old Speak program, AppleScript and iCloud Notes, Mitchell was able to send files from his iMac to his Mac 512K via Siri. It's a clever mix of old and new technology that's worth a watch, even just to hear the antiquated sound of a floppy drive working hard to copy files.

New Apple TV shows second die shrink of A5 chip, now 28nm
Appleís recent update of the Apple TV has resulted revealed a second die-shrink for its A5 processor, reports Macrumors. A new version of the Apple TV (A1469) was acknowledged by Apple, which said the new model continues with the same functionality as the previous edition, but that it does include an unspecified component change. Now revealed, the new component also shows that Apple has switched to 28nm process for the chip, suggesting that it may have started its transition from Samsung for its chip fabrication.

Das AppleTV 3.2 (so der angebliche Versionsname) hat einen kleineren Chipsockel bekommen (von 8x8mm auf 6x6mm geschrumpft). Whenever my lovely wife and I take a vacation, we take a lot of photographs and keep a log of what interesting things happen everyday. Leak: Samsung Galaxy S4 auf "echten" Fotos

Es soll sich dabei (wirklich) um das Samsung Galaxy S4 handeln, allerdings in der chinesischen Dual-SIM-Veriante, weshalb die Modellnummer GT-i9502 lautet und nicht GT-i9500. Philips Releases Open APIs and SDK for iOS Controlled Hue Lighting System [iOS Blog]

Samsung takes top spot in Chinese market for 2012
South Korean manufacturer Samsung sold the most smartphones in China of any manufacturer for 2012, according to a new report out from Strategy Analytics. In taking the top spot, Samsung beat out competitors including Apple, Lenovo, and Nokia, which held the top spot for Chinese smartphone sales in 2011. Apple and the holder of the trademark "iPhone" in Brazil, tech firm IGB Electrônica SA, are allegedly in talks to resolve a legal dispute that has seen the latter company release its own "iPhone" in the emerging market of Brazil. The firm, formerly known as IGB Gradiente, won a protracted court fight to the exclusive use of the name "iPhone" after it filed for the mark in 2000, years before Apple produced its own device. Mozilla stellt klar: Weiterhin kein Firefox für iOS
Auch Mozilla beteiligt sich am Trend hin zu Mobil-Geräten: Die Stiftung hat sogar ein eigenes Smartphone-OS entwickelt. Ube WiFi Smart Dimmer to recieve customized multitouch gesture control
Here's a cool little addition to the increasingly competitive world of home automation. Ube's got a WiFi Smart Dimmer that utilizes multitouch functionality to control the the lights in your house -- use one finger to turn off a single light, or use two to turn off a set. The company picked SXSW as the venue to announce the forthcoming launch of customized gestures for other smart devices -- in the example given to us by CEO Utz Baldwin, a user can input a "W" to turn on the sprinklers -- or an "A" plus up swipe to turn on an alarm and an "A" plus a down swipe to disable it.
